My Disciple's Growth Gives Me 10,000x Returns
Chapter 39 — The Foundation That Remains
The final matches of the day ended without Cloudveil returning to the arena.
That was probably fortunate.
Lu Chen had spent most of the remaining tournament staring at his own hands.
Every few breaths, he would stop.
Wait.
Feel the circulation continue.
Then grin.
Then become aware that he was grinning.
The circulation would wobble.
Then stabilize again.
By the time the Five Peaks Assessment paused for the evening, Shen Yuan had watched the same process happen eleven times.
[First Anchor Stability: 99%]
Still ninety-nine.
Lu Chen walked beside him on the path back to Cloudveil.
"Master."
"Hm?"
"How long do I have to sleep?"
Lin Yue glanced over.
Jian Wuchen did not.
Shen Yuan kept walking.
"Preferably until you wake up."
Lu Chen frowned.
"I meant for the test."
"So did I."
"What if I wake up after one hour?"
"Then you slept for one hour."
"What if I can't sleep?"
"Then eventually exhaustion solves the problem."
Lu Chen considered that.
"Master."
"Hm?"
"You're not worried."
Shen Yuan looked at him.
"I am."
Lu Chen blinked.
The answer had apparently surprised him.
Shen Yuan continued up the mountain.
"That doesn't mean you should be."
Lu Chen stared for a moment.
Then followed.
Lin Yue's expression softened slightly.
Jian Wuchen said nothing.
But his hand moved briefly to Clear Wind's worn hilt.
Cloudveil disappeared into the evening mist.
Lu Chen discovered something important that night.
Sleeping on command was difficult.
Sleeping on command while knowing that the success or failure of one's cultivation foundation might depend on remaining asleep was considerably worse.
He lay on his bed.
Eyes closed.
Chaos circulated.
Arm.
Shoulder.
Chest.
Spine.
Lower body.
Return.
He felt everything.
That was the problem.
One cycle.
Another.
Another.
Don't think about it.
Lu Chen immediately thought about not thinking about it.
His eyes opened.
He stared at the ceiling.
A quarter-hour passed.
He closed them again.
Sleep.
Nothing happened.
Stop trying to sleep.
That was still trying to sleep.
Another quarter-hour passed.
Eventually Lu Chen sat up.
Outside his room, someone poured tea.
Lu Chen stared toward the door.
"Master?"
"You're awake."
Lu Chen opened the door.
Shen Yuan sat beneath the eaves.
A small table stood beside him.
Tea steamed in the cool night air.
Lu Chen looked around.
"Why are you here?"
"Drinking tea."
"Outside my room?"
"Convenient location."
Lu Chen narrowed his eyes.
Shen Yuan drank his tea.
Neither spoke.
Lu Chen finally sat opposite him.
"I can't sleep."
"I noticed."
"I'm trying."
"That's the problem."
Lu Chen paused.
Shen Yuan set down the cup.
"You've spent days learning not to force your circulation."
Lu Chen nodded.
"Now you're trying to force yourself unconscious."
Lu Chen's expression changed.
"Oh."
"Stop trying to break through."
"But sleeping is the breakthrough."
"No."
Shen Yuan looked at him.
"Sleeping is sleeping."
Lu Chen waited.
Shen Yuan didn't elaborate.
That was irritating.
Unfortunately, Lu Chen had become familiar with this particular form of irritation.
He looked down at his hands.
"If I stop thinking about the Anchor, what if it disappears?"
"Then you'll learn something."
"That's not reassuring."
"It wasn't supposed to be."
Lu Chen sighed.
Shen Yuan almost smiled.
The final one percent was different from the others.
Shen Yuan understood that much.
The First Anchor had begun with self-recognition.
Lu Chen had needed somewhere Chaos could return without being told what it was.
Not the dantian.
Not the heart.
Not the body.
Not a command.
Himself.
But even after discovering that, Lu Chen had still been maintaining the relationship consciously.
I recognize myself.
Therefore Chaos returns.
That was progress.
It wasn't completion.
Because Lu Chen didn't stop being Lu Chen when he stopped thinking about being Lu Chen.
At least, Shen Yuan hoped not.
Otherwise tonight was about to become much more complicated.
"When you wake tomorrow," Shen Yuan said, "don't tell me whether the circulation continued."
Lu Chen looked up.
"What should I tell you?"
"Whether you were still Lu Chen."
Silence.
Lu Chen stared.
"Master."
"Hm?"
"That's strange."
"Go to sleep."
Lu Chen went back inside.
An hour later, he was still awake.
Two hours later, he wasn't.
Shen Yuan remained beneath the eaves.
The moon rose over Cloudveil.
Mist moved quietly between the trees.
Somewhere farther up the mountain, cold Lunar Qi drifted from the direction of the Nine-Yin Lunar Pool.
Lin Yue was still cultivating.
From another courtyard came the occasional faint resonance of Sword Qi.
Jian Wuchen was apparently also awake.
Shen Yuan sighed.
He had somehow collected three disciples who were terrible at resting.
Footsteps approached.
Chen An appeared carrying another pot of tea.
He replaced the empty one.
"Peak Master."
"Thank you."
Chen An glanced toward Lu Chen's room.
This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.
"Has Junior Brother Lu Chen fallen asleep?"
"Yes."
"Will he be all right?"
Shen Yuan looked through the wall.
His perception settled on Lu Chen.
Chaos was still moving.
Weakly.
Slowly.
But moving.
"Probably."
Chen An waited.
Shen Yuan glanced at him.
Apparently that answer wasn't sufficient.
"I'll make sure he is."
Chen An nodded.
"Then I'll prepare breakfast for four."
"Five."
Chen An paused.
Shen Yuan pointed at him.
"You eat too."
Chen An was silent for a moment.
"Understood."
He left.
Shen Yuan returned his attention to Lu Chen.
Midnight passed.
Lu Chen's breathing deepened.
Conscious awareness faded.
The change was immediate.
The circulation slowed.
Shen Yuan's eyes sharpened.
Chaos moved from the arm.
Shoulder.
Chest.
Then stopped.
One breath.
Two.
Three.
Nothing.
Shen Yuan didn't interfere.
Four breaths.
Five.
The Chaos inside Lu Chen's body trembled.
For weeks, every meaningful cycle had possessed some degree of recognition behind it.
A thought.
An intention.
A returning awareness.
Now there was none.
No command.
No observation.
No Lu Chen consciously telling Chaos:
This is me.
The circulation should have collapsed.
Instead—
something remained.
Not a location.
Not an organ.
Not a thought.
Lu Chen.
His sleeping body.
His spirit.
His root.
His developing Chaos physique.
Everything that constituted him existed whether he was paying attention to it or not.
Chaos moved.
Shoulder.
Chest.
Spine.
Lower body.
Then returned.
One complete cycle.
Shen Yuan stopped breathing for half a moment.
Another cycle began.
No consciousness.
No command.
No imposed identity.
The First Anchor remained.
[First Anchor Stability: 99% → 100%]
[First Anchor — SELF: Complete.]
Shen Yuan's eyes narrowed.
The next notification appeared.
[Primordial Chaos Foundation Mission: 99% → 100%]
[Mission Complete.]
Then Cloudveil changed.
Not violently.
At first.
The spiritual Qi around Lu Chen's room shifted.
A strand entered.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
The surrounding Qi began flowing inward.
Shen Yuan stood.
Inside the room, Lu Chen remained asleep.
His completed circulation had begun operating naturally.
For the first time, the Primordial Chaos Scripture wasn't waiting for him.
It was cultivating.
Automatically.
Spiritual Qi entered Lu Chen's body.
Fire.
Water.
Wood.
Earth.
Metal.
Ordinary distinctions recognized throughout the Mortal Realm.
They entered his circulation.
And disappeared.
Not destroyed.
Not converted into another element.
Their distinctions simply stopped mattering.
Chaos accepted them.
The pull increased.
Mist around the courtyard shifted.
Leaves trembled.
The local Spirit Gathering Formation reacted.
Shen Yuan immediately raised one hand.
He didn't touch Lu Chen.
Instead, he adjusted Cloudveil's local formation.
The surrounding cultivation courtyards disconnected from the affected node.
The flow redirected.
Cloudveil's reserves opened.
Spiritual Qi poured toward Lu Chen without disturbing Lin Yue or Jian Wuchen.
Shen Yuan watched closely.
This was why he had stayed.
Not to complete the breakthrough.
Lu Chen had to do that himself.
Shen Yuan was here to make sure completing it didn't accidentally drain half the mountain.
The Chaos circulation accelerated.
Lu Chen's body changed with it.
Not externally.
Deeper.
The foundation that had been assembled piece by piece finally became one structure.
Primordial Chaos Root.
Primordial Chaos Body.
Primordial Chaos Scripture.
First Anchor.
None were operating independently anymore.
They connected.
The result appeared before Shen Yuan.
[Disciple: Lu Chen]
[Cultivation Path: Primordial Chaos]
[Primordial Chaos Foundation — Initial]
[First Anchor: SELF — Complete]
[Internal Circulation: Complete]
[Primordial Chaos Root Awakening: 24% → 31%]
[Primordial Chaos Body Awakening: 11% → 16%]
A final line appeared.
[Conventional Energy Equivalent: Foundation Establishment]
Shen Yuan read it twice.
Then looked at the sleeping fifteen-year-old inside the room.
Lu Chen had never formally entered Qi Refining.
Not in the conventional sense.
For weeks, he had possessed physical ability approaching Foundation Establishment while lacking a stable internal cultivation structure.
Now the structure existed.
The Primordial Chaos Scripture hadn't skipped cultivation.
It had spent the entire period constructing something that conventional realm labels couldn't properly describe.
And the first stable result happened to correspond roughly to Foundation Establishment.
Roughly.
Shen Yuan suspected that word would become increasingly important.
The system wasn't finished.
[Disciple Growth detected.]
[Major Foundation Achievement recorded.]
[Cause and Effect Amplification activated.]
The sensation that followed was unlike Lin Yue's Lunar Cycle Insight.
There was no cold.
No sword.
No elemental characteristic.
Instead—
Shen Yuan became acutely aware of himself.
Not his body.
Not his cultivation.
Not his name.
The simple fact that among countless relationships, causes, effects and perceptions—
there had to be something on each end.
A relationship couldn't exist without defined referents.
To sever correctly, Shen Yuan had always needed to understand the relationship.
Lu Chen's breakthrough suggested something beneath that.
Before understanding what connected two things—
one had to understand what made them remain themselves.
The thought brushed against his Heaven-Severing Dao.
Shen Yuan allowed it to exist.
No more.
No forced breakthrough.
No attempt to turn Lu Chen's path into his own.
Just understanding.
[10,000× Return achieved.]
[Obtained: Primordial Self-Anchoring Dao Insight.]
Shen Yuan closed his eyes.
Then opened them.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
He looked toward Lu Chen.
"Useful disciple."
Lu Chen snored.
Shen Yuan decided not to tell him.
Morning arrived quietly.
Lu Chen opened his eyes.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Then he noticed.
Chaos was circulating.
He wasn't doing it.
He sat up.
The circulation continued.
He raised one arm.
Continued.
He stood.
Continued.
Took three steps.
Continued.
Lu Chen froze.
Yesterday, distraction had become possible.
Today—
there was nothing to distract.
The circulation no longer required permission.
It was simply part of him.
His eyes widened.
Then he remembered.
When you wake tomorrow, don't tell me whether the circulation continued.
Tell me whether you were still Lu Chen.
Lu Chen opened the door.
Shen Yuan was still beneath the eaves.
The tea had been replaced several times.
"Master."
Shen Yuan looked at him.
Lu Chen stood there for a moment.
Then smiled.
"I was."
Shen Yuan nodded.
"Good."
Lu Chen waited.
"That's it?"
"What else?"
"I completed my foundation."
"Yes."
"I finally have a cultivation realm."
"Approximately."
Lu Chen's smile faltered.
"Approximately?"
Shen Yuan stood.
"Breakfast first."
"Master."
"Breakfast."
Lu Chen followed him.
He had learned which battles were unwinnable.
Breakfast lasted less than three minutes before Lin Yue noticed.
She lowered her chopsticks.
"Lu Chen."
Lu Chen looked up.
"Senior Sister?"
"You're different."
Jian Wuchen had already noticed.
His eyes remained on Lu Chen for another moment.
"Circulation."
Lu Chen grinned.
"It doesn't stop."
Lin Yue's expression brightened.
"Congratulations."
"Thank you."
Jian Wuchen nodded.
"Good."
Lu Chen looked between them.
"That's all?"
Jian Wuchen returned to eating.
Lu Chen sighed.
Apparently major cultivation breakthroughs did not exempt him from Cloudveil conversation habits.
He reached for his tea.
The cup cracked.
Everyone looked down.
Lu Chen froze.
Tea leaked through his fingers.
"I barely touched it."
Chen An silently removed the broken cup.
A thicker one replaced it.
Lu Chen stared.
"You already had that?"
"I ordered several."
"When?"
"Yesterday."
Shen Yuan nodded approvingly.
"Good decision."
Lu Chen accepted the new cup very carefully.
Lin Yue's lips curved.
Even Jian Wuchen looked suspiciously amused.
After breakfast, Shen Yuan returned briefly to his residence.
One item had been waiting in his storage for several days.
He took out the Primordial Voidheart Crystal.
Dark translucent light moved within it.
Back when Lu Chen first discovered the concept of the First Anchor, Shen Yuan had considered giving him the crystal.
The system had warned him.
Thirty-eight percent probability that the resource would influence the developing Anchor.
Too high.
So Shen Yuan had withheld it.
Now—
[Analyzing compatibility...]
[Primordial Voidheart Crystal]
[Compatibility with disciple Lu Chen: 99.8%]
[Risk of First Anchor distortion: 0.7%]
[Recommended use: After Primordial Chaos Foundation completes initial stabilization.]
Shen Yuan returned the crystal to storage.
Not yet.
The resource hadn't become less useful.
Lu Chen had simply needed to become himself before receiving something powerful enough to influence what "himself" meant.
A few weeks ago, Shen Yuan might have viewed the delay as inefficient.
Now he didn't.
Sometimes the best resource was the one not given.
The moment Cloudveil arrived at the Five Peaks Arena, Han Bo turned.
He had been speaking with another Black Tortoise disciple.
The conversation stopped.
Han Bo stared at Lu Chen.
Lu Chen waved.
"Morning."
Han Bo walked over.
He looked Lu Chen up and down.
"You're heavier."
Lu Chen glanced at his stomach.
"I didn't eat that much."
"Not that kind."
"Oh."
Han Bo reached out.
Lu Chen offered his arm.
Han Bo gripped it.
His expression changed.
"Yesterday you felt like a strong body."
"And today?"
Han Bo released him.
"Like something is holding the body together."
Lu Chen thought.
"That sounds good."
"It probably isn't good for whoever fights you."
Nearby, one of the assessment elders heard them.
The same elder who had supervised Lu Chen's manual evaluation slowly turned.
His eyes narrowed.
He approached.
"No."
Lu Chen blinked.
"I haven't done anything."
"You have a cultivation realm now."
Lu Chen brightened.
"Maybe."
The elder closed his eyes.
"Of course you do."
Shen Yuan walked past them.
"Foundation Establishment equivalent."
The elder's eyes opened.
He looked at Shen Yuan.
Then Lu Chen.
Then Shen Yuan again.
"Yesterday."
"Yes."
"He had no cultivation realm."
"Correct."
"And today he's Foundation Establishment."
"Equivalent."
"That word isn't helping."
Shen Yuan considered this.
"It helps me."
The elder walked away.
Lu Chen watched him go.
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No."
"Then why does he look tired?"
"Experience."
Lu Chen accepted that.
The day's bracket appeared.
Lu Chen's name came first.
His opponent was a Heavenly Sword Peak inner disciple at Qi Refining Ninth Stage.
Not one of Qin Feng's personal disciples, but experienced enough to have reached the later rounds through clean victories and excellent technique control.
Xu Ming — Qi Refining Ninth Stage.
The crowd reacted differently from yesterday.
Yesterday, a Qi Refining Ninth Stage opponent against Lu Chen would have been interesting.
Lu Chen's body had been extraordinary.
His cultivation nonexistent.
Technique could still control him.
Spiritual Qi could still create problems his body alone couldn't solve elegantly.
Today—
Shen Yuan wasn't sure this was fair.
Xu Ming entered the arena anyway.
His expression was serious.
Lu Chen stepped opposite him.
The examiner looked directly at Lu Chen.
"Do not damage the arena."
"I'll try."
"Try harder."
"Yes, Elder."
"Begin!"
Xu Ming attacked immediately.
Good decision.
Sword Qi crossed the arena.
Yesterday, Lu Chen would have dodged.
Or blocked physically.
Or tried to close distance before another technique arrived.
Today his body reacted before he thought.
Chaos circulated.
His arm reinforced.
Not with Earth.
Not Metal.
Not some converted defensive element.
Chaos simply supported what was already there.
Lu Chen raised one hand.
The Sword Qi struck his forearm.
Dispersed.
Xu Ming's eyes widened.
Lu Chen's widened too.
"That was easier."
Xu Ming wisely did not answer.
Three sword lights followed.
Lu Chen moved.
Chaos moved with him.
No concentration.
No deliberate routing.
His foot struck the ground.
He crossed the distance faster than yesterday's body alone could have managed.
Xu Ming changed stance.
His sword came across defensively.
Lu Chen stopped his fist just before impact.
The pressure alone struck the blade.
Xu Ming slid backward.
His feet crossed the boundary line.
Silence.
The examiner looked at the line.
Then Lu Chen.
"Winner—Lu Chen."
Lu Chen blinked.
"Already?"
Xu Ming sheathed his sword.
"Yes."
"Sorry."
Xu Ming stared at him.
"For what?"
Lu Chen thought.
"I don't know."
Xu Ming laughed despite himself.
"Then don't apologize."
He cupped his fists.
Lu Chen returned the gesture.
The entire fight had lasted three exchanges.
But Shen Yuan had seen enough.
Yesterday, Lu Chen's physical body had approached early Foundation Establishment.
Today that same body had a functioning Primordial Chaos cultivation system reinforcing it automatically.
The difference wasn't additive.
The pieces were beginning to multiply one another.
Root.
Body.
Scripture.
Foundation.
Anchor.
That was what a Transcendent-equivalent cultivation path should look like once it actually started functioning.
Realm labels would become increasingly unreliable from here.
Good.
The system displayed a small update.
[Primordial Chaos Foundation stabilization: 3%]
[Automatic circulation functioning normally.]
[First Anchor: Stable.]
Shen Yuan dismissed it.
No need to rush.
Lu Chen had finally built the foundation.
Now he could actually cultivate.
That thought was mildly alarming.
The tournament continued through midday.
Lin Yue advanced through another match without drawing Moonfrost.
Jian Wuchen's opponent surrendered after six exchanges when the difference in Sword Intent became obvious.
Zhao Tianming, despite his loss, remained near the arena and watched every Cloudveil match.
Liu Meiying joined him at one point.
Tang Rui arrived shortly afterward.
Han Bo brought food.
Somehow, without anyone formally deciding it, several of Azure Origin's strongest younger disciples had begun gathering together.
Shen Yuan noticed.
He approved.
Cloudveil shouldn't become an isolated island simply because its resources were better.
Disciples needed rivals.
Friends.
People outside their own peak who understood parts of cultivation they didn't.
Shen Yuan could teach many things.
He couldn't be every person in their lives.
Nor should he.
Later that afternoon, Tang Rui approached Jian Wuchen.
He wasn't smiling.
That was unusual.
His eyes were fixed on Clear Wind.
"Let me see your sword."
Jian Wuchen looked at him.
"No."
Tang Rui stopped.
"I don't mean take it."
Jian Wuchen waited.
Tang Rui pointed.
"Draw it."
Clear Wind left its sheath.
Sunlight caught the broken blade.
The old jagged end.
The missing upper section.
The scars.
Tang Rui's expression became more serious.
He leaned closer without touching.
"That crack wasn't this deep yesterday."
Jian Wuchen nodded.
"You noticed."
"I'm an artifact refiner."
"You set your sleeve on fire yesterday."
"That was unrelated."
"It was fire."
"Very unrelated."
Lu Chen laughed nearby.
Tang Rui ignored him.
He studied the sword again.
"Your Sword Qi is outgrowing the metal."
"I know."
"If you keep fighting like this, eventually the surviving blade will fail."
Jian Wuchen's expression didn't change.
Tang Rui glanced at him.
"You could reforge it."
"No."
"Replace the missing section."
"No."
"Use the surviving metal as the core of a new sword."
"No."
Tang Rui straightened.
"You really like that word."
Jian Wuchen looked at Clear Wind.
"The sword stays broken."
Tang Rui followed his gaze.
For once, he didn't joke.
"Why?"
Jian Wuchen was silent for a moment.
Then:
"It survived."
Tang Rui looked at him.
That was enough.
He crouched and studied the blade again.
"You want reinforcement."
"Yes."
"Same length?"
"Yes."
"Same break?"
"Yes."
"Same shape?"
"Yes."
Tang Rui rubbed his chin.
"That's harder."
Jian Wuchen waited.
Tang Rui's expression slowly changed.
The familiar enthusiasm returned.
"Which means I want to try."
"You're not trying anything alone."
Both turned.
Shen Yuan had approached without either noticing.
Tang Rui straightened.
"Peak Master Shen."
Shen Yuan looked at Clear Wind.
Then at Tang Rui.
"Who is the best artifact refiner available at Vermilion Flame Peak?"
Tang Rui's enthusiasm weakened.
"My master."
"Good."
Tang Rui looked offended.
"I could do it."
"You could assist."
"That's barely better."
"It's considerably better than ruining his sword."
Tang Rui thought about arguing.
Then looked at Clear Wind's fracture again.
He sighed.
"Fair."
Jian Wuchen sheathed the sword.
Shen Yuan opened his storage.
He had spent part of the morning searching.
Most materials were unsuitable.
Some were too rigid.
Some would overwhelm Clear Wind's existing structure.
Some were valuable but offered nothing specifically useful for carrying increasingly dense Sword Qi.
Then he'd found one.
Shen Yuan took out a small black-silver piece of metal.
No larger than two fingers.
Tang Rui stopped breathing.
The material didn't release overwhelming pressure.
It didn't need to.
Fine silver lines moved through the dark metal like frozen lightning.
Jian Wuchen's Sword Heart reacted.
Clear Wind hummed inside its sheath.
Tang Rui stared.
"Peak Master Shen."
"Hm?"
"Where did you get that?"
"Storage."
Tang Rui closed his eyes.
Apparently that answer was becoming unpopular.
He opened them again.
"Is that..."
He leaned closer.
Then immediately leaned back.
"Void Meridian Star-Iron?"
Shen Yuan checked the system description.
[Void Meridian Star-Iron]
[Heaven-Transcendent Artifact Material.]
[Properties: Extreme Sword Qi conductivity. Structural reinforcement. Adaptive energy-channel integration.]
[Special characteristic: Can integrate into existing artifact structure without requiring complete reforging.]
Perfect.
Tang Rui looked from the material—
to Clear Wind—
then back.
His earlier smile had disappeared completely.
"Peak Master Shen."
"Yes?"
"Please tell me you're not planning to put that into a broken Mortal Realm sword."
Shen Yuan looked at Jian Wuchen.
Jian Wuchen looked at Clear Wind.
Then Shen Yuan looked back at Tang Rui.
"I am."
Tang Rui stared at him.
Somewhere behind them, Gu Tianhe had apparently heard enough to become concerned.
"What are you doing now?"
Shen Yuan sighed.
It was becoming increasingly difficult to accomplish anything quietly.
