My Disciple's Growth Gives Me 10,000x Returns

Chapter 50 — Before the Records Burn

  • Next Chapter

The old registry repository did not look important enough to justify three years of murder.

It had one entrance.

Two stone pillars.

A faded plaque.

No sword statues.

No ancient formation visible from outside.

Just a rectangular building pressed against the lower slope of Third Lineage Mountain.

Lu Chen stared at it.

"This is it?"

Song Yao didn't slow.

"The visible part."

"Oh."

"Most of it is underground."

"That's better."

Lin Yue looked at him.

"Why?"

"It makes more sense."

"No, it doesn't."

Lu thought about that while running.

Behind them, the Profound Sword Sect Master raised his authority token.

The entrance formation recognized it immediately.

[Sect Master Authority Confirmed.]

Then:

[Access denied.]

Everyone stopped.

The Sect Master's expression darkened.

Duan Zheng looked at him.

"That's embarrassing."

The Sect Master ignored him.

His token flashed again.

[Emergency Archival Purge in progress.]

[External entry prohibited until completion.]

Song Yao stepped closer.

"How long?"

A line appeared.

[Estimated completion: Thirty-seven minutes.]

Duan's hand went to his sword.

"Break it."

"No."

The Sect Master pressed two fingers against the formation.

"Why not?" Duan asked.

"Because the outer barrier is connected to the repository's preservation network."

"Which is currently destroying the repository."

"Yes."

Duan stared at him.

The Sect Master added:

"It was designed to prevent an enemy from capturing sect records during an invasion."

Ye Feng understood.

"If we force the wrong layer, it accelerates the purge."

"Correct."

Lu Chen frowned.

"Who can activate it?"

"Sect Master authority."

Everyone looked at the Sect Master.

His face became colder.

"Or emergency archival authority when the Sect Master is unavailable."

Duan's eyes narrowed.

"You're standing here."

"Which means the protocol was initiated before my authority reached the repository."

Song Yao crouched beside the formation.

Sword Qi entered her fingertips.

A moment later, her expression changed.

"This isn't the original protocol."

The Sect Master looked down.

"What changed?"

"The inner circulation."

Jian Wuchen stepped beside her.

He studied the lines.

Clear Wind remained sheathed.

"That section."

Song Yao followed his gaze.

A thin branch of Sword Qi ran beneath the administrative formation.

Almost invisible.

It turned once.

Yielded.

Returned.

Then joined another line at an angle the original formation would never have required.

Song Yao's face hardened.

"False Seventh."

Duan drew his sword.

"Now can we break it?"

The Sect Master sighed.

"Part of it."

It took seven minutes.

The Sect Master dismantled the administrative lock.

Song Yao isolated the modified Sword Qi route.

Jian Wuchen identified two places where cutting the circulation would redirect rather than collapse it.

Ye Feng held the secondary channels stable.

Duan Zheng complained.

Shen Yuan watched.

That was intentional.

He could have opened the entrance.

Probably.

But every problem did not require Heaven-Severing.

Especially one involving an unfamiliar formation connected to thousands of records beneath a mountain.

Cutting something before understanding its relationships was exactly the kind of lesson the last day had made difficult to ignore.

So Shen kept his hands in his sleeves.

Lin Yue noticed.

"Master isn't helping."

Lu Chen whispered, "Maybe he's testing us."

Shen looked at him.

"I'm standing here."

Lu lowered his voice.

"I know."

"Then whispering doesn't help."

"Oh."

Lin looked back toward the formation.

Shen smiled faintly.

The entrance opened.

Cold air rushed out.

Along with the smell of burning jade.

Duan's expression changed.

"Move."

The repository descended in layers.

The first floor held ordinary records.

The second contained old registration jades.

The third connected to storage tunnels cut directly through the mountain.

Red formation light pulsed along every wall.

Shelf after shelf of jade slips was being erased.

Not burned.

Worse.

Characters disappeared from their surfaces.

Spiritual impressions collapsed.

Centuries of ownership records, transfers, repair histories and lineage registrations became blank stone.

The Sect Master's expression became murderous.

"How do we stop it?" Ye Feng asked.

"Central control chamber."

"Where?"

"Lowest level."

A crash echoed below.

Then another.

Not formation destruction.

Combat.

Duan looked toward Song Yao.

"Zhou?"

"Maybe."

The Sect Master unfolded a repository map.

Four lower exits.

Lin Yue looked once.

"Three."

The Sect Master glanced at her.

"Four."

"The western freight exit rejoins the southern passage."

"Eventually."

"Then anyone escaping still makes one of three decisions."

The Sect Master paused.

Then looked at her properly.

Lin pointed.

"East is narrow."

Jian Wuchen already understood.

"I'll take it."

"Lower freight route is reinforced."

Lu Chen looked at the metal plate on his back.

Then at Lin.

"No."

Lin ignored him.

"You take that."

"Why?"

"You brought the plate."

"I didn't bring it voluntarily."

"You asked to keep it."

"That was before we started running through mountains."

Lin pointed toward the central junction.

"I'll hold this."

Jian nodded once.

No argument.

Lu looked toward Shen.

"Master?"

Shen shrugged.

"Senior Sister."

Lu sighed.

"Right."

The Sect Master looked between the three disciples.

He had apparently expected to give the instructions.

Then he folded the map.

"Do it."

Lin moved first.

Jian disappeared east.

Lu ran downward, plate rattling against his back.

The Sect Master looked at Shen.

"You're letting her command them?"

"She seems to be doing well."

"She's seventeen."

Shen thought about it.

"That does sound inconvenient."

Then the first enemy reached the junction.

Lin Yue did not chase him.

That was the first thing Shen noticed.

The man wore no lineage robe.

Foundation Establishment.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Experienced.

He saw Lin standing alone in the central junction and immediately changed direction.

Most cultivators would have followed.

Lin looked at the gate he was approaching instead.

A stone mechanism began closing behind him.

Open.

Closing.

Closed.

A transition.

Moonfrost left its sheath.

Cold spread across the floor.

Not toward the cultivator.

Toward the gate mechanism.

Ice entered the moving joint.

The gate stopped halfway.

The man glanced back.

That was enough.

Lin stepped forward.

He attacked.

Three sword strikes.

Fast.

Precise.

Lin blocked the first.

Redirected the second.

Avoided the third.

The man retreated through the half-open gate.

Lin let him.

Then the frost melted.

Water ran beneath the mechanism.

The cultivator's expression changed.

Lin's sword moved.

The water froze again.

The gate slammed downward.

Not on him.

Behind him.

His retreat vanished.

He turned.

Lin was already there.

Moonfrost touched his throat.

"Drop it."

His eyes moved left.

A hidden needle slid toward his palm.

Lin's sword shifted.

Frost locked his wrist.

The needle fell.

He stared at her.

Lin's expression remained calm.

"I saw it."

He dropped the sword.

She struck his dantian seal point with the hilt.

He collapsed.

A system notification appeared before Shen Yuan.

[Disciple Lin Yue has applied cyclical transition comprehension to environmental state control.]

[Understanding of Lunar Cycles has deepened.]

[Third Lunar Channel Development: 68% → 70%.]

Shen looked at the frozen gate.

Interesting.

Lin's moon was becoming less about the moon.

Good.

Another two cultivators appeared from the southern passage.

Lin turned.

One stopped.

The other didn't.

A mistake.

Jian Wuchen's corridor allowed two people to stand side by side.

Barely.

His opponent didn't need two.

The man was old enough to have grey at his temples.

Foundation peak.

His sword carried no unusual inheritance.

No ancient intent.

No hidden lineage.

He was simply good.

That was more troublesome.

Their first exchange produced three cuts in the wall.

The second produced none.

By the fifth, Jian understood why.

The man never completed an attack.

Every strike remained capable of becoming another.

Thrust became sweep.

Sweep became withdrawal.

Withdrawal became another thrust.

Experienced.

Controlled.

Jian's sleeve opened at the shoulder.

Blood appeared.

The man didn't smile.

Good.

Jian disliked people who smiled too much while fighting.

Clear Wind turned.

Four internal Sword Channels carried his Sword Qi differently than they had weeks ago.

Less waste.

Less resistance.

More information.

Impact entered the broken sword.

Direction traveled through the channels.

Jian felt where the opponent intended to go before the blade fully left contact.

Not prediction.

Commitment.

The difference mattered.

The man attacked.

Jian stepped aside.

Another.

Jian yielded.

Third.

Jian retreated.

The man's eyes sharpened.

He pushed harder.

That was what Jian wanted.

A swordsman who always preserved options eventually had to choose one if his opponent refused to give him anything.

The seventh strike committed.

Barely.

Enough.

Clear Wind moved.

The man's sword broke near the guard.

Jian's blade stopped at his throat.

"Stop."

The man looked at him.

Then at the broken sword.

His left hand moved toward a jade token at his waist.

Jian cut once.

The man fell.

No speech.

No hesitation.

The jade token rolled across the stone.

Jian picked it up.

A purge authorization.

He looked toward the lower repository.

Then kept moving.

Lu Chen found the stairs.

He was unhappy about this.

"There are too many."

No one answered.

He descended another level.

A formation lit beneath his feet.

Lu stopped.

The wall opened.

A reinforced stone piston slammed toward him.

He raised the training plate.

Clang.

The impact launched him backward.

He hit the opposite wall.

Hard.

Lu slid down.

Looked at the plate.

Then at the piston retracting into the wall.

"Oh."

It struck again.

This time Lu anchored his rear foot.

Plate forward.

Clang.

Force entered the center.

Spread across six channels.

Arms.

Shoulders.

Spine.

Legs.

Ground.

The floor cracked beneath him.

But he remained standing.

Lu's eyes brightened.

Again.

Clang.

Receive.

Spread.

Anchor.

The piston retracted.

Lu stepped forward.

Another formation activated.

Two pistons.

Lu's expression became offended.

"That's unnecessary."

They struck.

Clang.

His arms shook.

Force entered unevenly.

Too much left.

Not enough right.

His stance collapsed.

Lu rolled beneath the second piston and came up laughing.

Then stopped.

"Why am I laughing?"

He considered it.

"No time."

He ran.

Two cultivators appeared at the bottom.

One activated the piston formation manually.

The other attacked.

Lu blocked with the plate.

Sword struck metal.

Force entered.

Different from the piston.

Sharper.

Directed.

Intent attached.

Lu distributed it.

Poorly.

The edge cut his forearm.

He stepped back.

The piston struck from behind.

Lu turned.

Plate raised.

Clang.

Force from behind.

Sword from ahead.

Two directions.

His plate could receive one cleanly.

Not both.

The enemy smiled.

Lu looked at the plate.

Then understood something unpleasant.

He was hiding behind it.

The next piston came.

Lu lowered the plate.

The attacking cultivator hesitated.

Probably because that seemed stupid.

It was.

A little.

The piston struck Lu's back.

His body lurched.

But this time he didn't resist the impact.

The Self remained.

Everything else moved.

Force entered his back.

Across the shoulder.

Down the spine.

Into the hips.

Through the forward leg.

Lu stepped.

The sword cultivator attacked.

Lu turned with the force already traveling through him.

His palm struck the flat of the man's sword.

The piston force continued.

Into steel.

Into arm.

Into shoulder.

The cultivator flew sideways.

Lu stared at his hand.

"Oh."

The second enemy attacked.

Lu grinned.

"Again."

The man clearly hated that word.

Shen Yuan stopped walking.

Something entered him.

Not force.

Understanding.

The system appeared.

[Disciple Lu Chen has developed a new application from an established developmental chain.]

[Self Anchor → External Force Integration → Force Distribution Training.]

[Disciple development has exceeded direct resource instruction.]

Then:

[Cause and Effect Amplification triggered.]

Shen's eyes sharpened.

[Amplified Insight obtained: Primordial Force Circulation — Initial.]

For an instant, the corridor changed.

Not visibly.

Conceptually.

Shen felt the weight of his own body against the ground.

The ground returning that pressure.

Air resisting movement.

Stone carrying vibration.

Every force had a source.

A receiver.

A direction.

A response.

Impact was not an isolated event.

It was a relationship.

Shen Yuan became silent.

Everything lately seemed determined to become a relationship.

The system continued.

[Primordial Autonomous Dao Body has begun integrating derived force principles.]

His body adjusted without permission.

Muscles.

Bones.

Meridians.

Even the way his feet distributed weight changed slightly.

Tiny.

Effortless.

Automatic.

Shen looked toward the lower freight passage.

Lu's panel appeared.

[Foundation Stabilization: 34% → 37%.]

[External Force Integration: Intermediate.]

Good.

Shen closed the system.

Then a cultivator came flying out of the freight passage and hit the wall.

Lu appeared behind him.

"Master."

"Hm?"

"I figured it out."

"I noticed."

The second cultivator tried to rise.

Lu hit him with the plate.

He stopped.

Shen looked at him.

Lu looked at the plate.

"That part wasn't cultivation."

"No."

"Sorry."

"Keep moving."

Duan Zheng found blood on the fourth level.

Song Yao crouched.

Touched it.

"Recent."

"How recent?"

"Hours."

Ye Feng looked down the corridor.

A sword mark crossed one wall.

Shallow.

Precise.

Song Yao touched that too.

Her fingers trembled once.

"Zhou."

Duan looked at her.

"Certain?"

"No."

She stood.

"But he always cut too shallow when he was tired."

Duan stared at her.

"Everyone you know has strangely specific flaws."

"So do you."

"Name one."

"You think anger is a plan."

Ye Feng looked away.

Duan continued walking.

They found another sword mark.

Then another.

Each beside a purge node.

Disabled.

Someone had been moving through the repository ahead of the destruction formation, manually disconnecting sections.

Saving records.

Duan's pace increased.

"Idiot."

Song Yao looked at him.

"You don't know it's him."

"Then whoever it is is also an idiot."

A body lay near the next junction.

Alive.

Unconscious.

False-Seventh sword grip.

Duan checked him.

"Recent."

Song Yao looked farther ahead.

Another drop of blood.

Then another.

"He's here."

Duan's jaw tightened.

"Alive?"

Song Yao stood.

"He was when he made that."

They ran.

At the repository's lowest level, the Profound Sword Sect Master found Elder Qiao.

The third name.

Registry authority.

Supply access.

Still active.

Missing from Registry Hall.

He stood before the central purge formation with four cultivators behind him.

Several storage rings lay on a table.

The Sect Master entered alone.

Qiao looked at him.

"So they reached Reed Grave."

"Yes."

"Cao failed."

"Yes."

Qiao sighed.

"He always panicked."

The Sect Master's hand rested on his sword.

"Stop the purge."

"No."

"That was not a request."

Qiao smiled faintly.

"Do you know what your Seventh Lineage is?"

The Sect Master said nothing.

"A shell."

Still nothing.

"Centuries of incomplete techniques preserved by people too frightened to ask why half their inheritance makes no sense."

"Song Yao would disagree."

"Song Yao inherited scraps and learned to be grateful."

The Sect Master's eyes cooled.

Qiao continued.

"We found the missing pieces."

"No."

For the first time, Qiao frowned.

The Sect Master drew his sword.

"You found things you didn't understand."

"And you would have buried them again."

"Possibly."

Qiao laughed.

"Exactly."

Sword Qi began gathering around him.

"The Seventh was crippled."

"Perhaps."

"Deliberately."

"Perhaps."

"And you don't want to know why?"

"I do."

The Sect Master's sword lowered.

"But wanting an answer does not give me permission to murder my own disciples to obtain it."

Qiao's expression hardened.

"They stood in the way of restoring what was stolen from us."

"Stolen by whom?"

Silence.

The Sect Master waited.

Qiao's eyes changed.

He didn't know.

"Exactly."

The Sect Master stepped forward.

"You found evidence that something was removed."

Another step.

"You decided removal meant theft."

Another.

"You found a structure you couldn't understand."

Another.

"You decided ignorance meant inheritance."

Sword Intent filled the chamber.

"And when Jian Shou noticed what you were doing, you decided curiosity meant death."

Qiao attacked.

The collision shook the lower repository.

Lin Yue felt it three levels above.

Stone dust fell.

The two cultivators facing her glanced downward.

Wrong decision.

Lin moved.

The battlefield had changed.

At first, she'd controlled frost.

Then gates.

Now she understood the junction itself.

East corridor.

South passage.

Freight route.

People entered.

People left.

Pressure accumulated.

Pressure released.

Every route had a state.

Open.

Closed.

Occupied.

Empty.

Advance.

Retreat.

She did not need to overpower every person inside it.

She needed to control when those states changed.

The first cultivator rushed east.

Lin allowed him through.

Then froze the eastern release lever.

The man found Jian Wuchen walking toward him.

He stopped.

Jian looked at him.

The man turned around.

Lin was waiting.

His expression became complicated.

"Drop the sword," Lin said.

He did.

The second ran south.

Lin thawed the gate she'd frozen earlier.

It opened unexpectedly.

Lu Chen came through carrying his plate.

The fleeing cultivator nearly collided with him.

Lu blinked.

"Oh."

He hit him.

The man collapsed.

Lin looked at Lu.

"Alive?"

Lu checked.

"Yes."

"Good."

Jian approached from the east.

Blood marked his shoulder.

Lin looked at it.

"Serious?"

"No."

Lu looked between them.

"Why don't you ask if I'm serious?"

Lin looked at his torn sleeve, bruised face and enormous smile.

"Are you?"

Lu considered it.

"No."

"Then no."

A deeper impact shook the mountain.

Jian looked downward.

"Sect Master."

Lin nodded.

"Move."

Jian followed immediately.

So did Lu.

No discussion.

Shen Yuan watched them pass.

He smiled.

Then followed.

Qiao was stronger than the others.

Core Formation.

Not exceptional for his realm.

Experienced.

Prepared.

And standing inside a formation he'd helped modify.

That made him dangerous.

The Sect Master was still stronger.

Much stronger.

But he couldn't simply destroy the chamber.

Every strike risked the remaining records.

Qiao knew it.

So he fought around shelves.

Formation nodes.

Storage rings.

He attacked preservation lines whenever forced backward.

The Sect Master had to defend his own archive while fighting him.

Smart.

Desperate.

Effective.

Then Duan Zheng and Song Yao entered from the opposite passage.

Qiao's face changed.

"Duan."

"Disappointed?"

"Surprised."

"People keep saying that."

Song Yao looked at the central formation.

"He's accelerating the purge."

The Sect Master blocked another strike.

"Can you stop it?"

"Not while he's controlling it."

Duan drew his sword.

"Then I'll stop him."

Qiao laughed.

"You still think this is about Jian Shou."

Duan's expression became cold.

"For me?"

He stepped forward.

"It is."

Before he could attack, another purge node activated.

A wall of jade records began turning white.

Song Yao moved.

Too far.

The formation brightened.

Then—

A sword pierced through the wall from the other side.

Not with overwhelming force.

Precisely.

The blade struck one formation junction.

The purge line died.

A second thrust.

Another node went dark.

A third.

The spreading white light stopped.

Duan froze.

A voice came through the damaged wall.

"You always were terrible at arriving quietly."

Nobody moved.

Duan stared.

Stone shifted.

A narrow maintenance panel opened.

A man stepped through.

Grey robe.

Thin.

Hair longer than it should have been.

Blood darkened the left side of his clothes beneath the ribs.

One hand held a sword.

The other carried three storage jades.

Song Yao stopped breathing.

Duan's face went blank.

The man looked at him.

Then smiled faintly.

"You look terrible."

Duan stared at him for several seconds.

"Li Cangwu said the same thing."

The man's smile widened.

"He's getting repetitive."

Song Yao whispered:

"Zhou."

Zhou Xuanji looked at her.

The humor disappeared.

For a moment, three years stood between them.

Song Yao's voice was quieter.

"Why didn't you contact me?"

"Because they started watching you."

"I thought you were dead."

Zhou considered that.

"For a while, so did I."

Then Qiao attacked him.

The reunion ended.

Jian Wuchen intercepted the strike.

Clear Wind met Qiao's sword.

The difference in cultivation was enormous.

Jian's feet slid across the stone.

Blood rose in his throat.

He did not try to win.

He changed the direction.

Four Sword Channels screamed.

Qiao's strike shifted just enough.

It missed Zhou.

The Sect Master's sword arrived.

Qiao barely blocked.

Duan attacked from the left.

Song Yao cut the formation control line on the right.

Then Lin Yue entered the chamber.

She looked once.

Understood enough.

"Lu."

"I know."

He did not know.

But he went anyway.

A damaged purge node was collapsing.

Lu planted the force-distribution plate against it.

The formation discharged.

Force struck the plate.

His entire body shook.

He anchored.

Received.

Distributed.

Redirected.

The discharge entered the floor instead of the jade shelves.

Cracks spread through the stone.

Lu grinned through clenched teeth.

"This is much worse than the piston."

Lin was already moving.

Two of Qiao's remaining cultivators tried reaching the storage rings.

Frost blocked one route.

Thawed another.

She gave them an opening.

They took it.

The opening led directly toward Jian.

One stopped.

The other didn't.

Clear Wind moved.

One fell.

The other surrendered.

Lin turned toward the central formation.

"Senior Song."

Song Yao looked at her.

"Which nodes need to stay open?"

Song pointed.

"Those three."

Lin froze two others.

Not destroyed.

Suspended.

The purge cycle stalled.

Song's eyes widened.

"Again."

Lin moved.

The room began changing according to their rhythm.

Freeze.

Release.

Redirect.

Hold.

The destruction formation had been designed as a cycle.

So Lin gave it a different one.

Shen Yuan stood at the entrance.

He did nothing.

Because he didn't need to.

That was satisfying.

Qiao realized it too.

His people were down.

The purge was stalled.

Zhou was alive.

Duan had returned.

Song Yao understood the formation.

The Sect Master controlled the room.

And three absurdly young Cloudveil disciples had somehow turned his prepared escape routes into traps.

His gaze shifted.

Toward the storage rings.

Shen saw the decision.

So did Lin.

She froze the floor.

Qiao changed direction.

Jian saw that.

He cut off the second.

Qiao turned again.

Lu threw the training plate.

Everyone stared.

The plate struck Qiao's knee.

Not hard enough to injure.

Enough to interrupt.

The Sect Master's sword stopped at Qiao's throat.

Silence.

Lu looked at his empty hands.

Then at Shen.

"Was that allowed?"

Shen considered it.

"Technically."

Lu looked relieved.

Qiao stared at the sword against his throat.

"It's too late."

Zhou Xuanji leaned against the wall.

"No."

Qiao looked at him.

Zhou lifted the three storage jades.

"That's why I've been living under your archive for six days."

Duan stared.

"Six days?"

"Five and a half."

"Why?"

"I was busy."

"You were bleeding."

"I was also busy."

Duan looked like he wanted to hit him.

Song Yao noticed.

"Don't."

"I wasn't going to."

"You were."

"Maybe."

Zhou looked between them.

"I missed this less than I expected."

The purge ended seventeen minutes later.

Not cleanly.

Nearly a third of the oldest registry records were gone.

Another section had been damaged.

Several authorization chains were incomplete.

But the repository remained standing.

And Zhou Xuanji had saved the records that mattered most.

They gathered in the central chamber.

Qiao sat against the wall with his cultivation sealed.

The surviving collaborators were bound nearby.

The Sect Master stood over them.

No one mistook his silence for mercy.

Lin Yue sat briefly while Song Yao treated a cut on her arm.

Jian Wuchen leaned against a pillar.

Ye Feng inspected the wound on his shoulder.

"It's shallow."

"I know."

"You always say that."

"It's usually true."

Lu Chen recovered his plate.

A new dent occupied the center.

He rubbed it.

"Master."

"Hm?"

"Does this reduce its value?"

"Probably."

Lu looked distressed.

Shen added:

"It increased yours."

Lu stopped.

"Oh."

That seemed acceptable.

The system remained quiet.

It had already given Shen enough.

His Primordial Autonomous Dao Body continued integrating the force insight in the background.

Slowly.

Effortlessly.

Shen let it.

Across the room, Duan Zheng stood in front of Zhou Xuanji.

Neither spoke.

Finally Duan asked:

"Luo Heng."

Zhou's expression changed.

"You found him."

"Reed Grave."

Zhou closed his eyes.

"Dead?"

"Three years."

A long silence.

"Take me to him later."

"I will."

Another debt.

At least this one had somewhere to go.

Song Yao approached.

"How much did you save?"

Zhou looked toward the three storage jades.

"Enough."

The Sect Master picked one up.

"Names?"

"Some."

"Authorization chains?"

"Most."

"Transfers?"

"Enough."

Duan folded his arms.

"You keep saying that."

Zhou looked at him.

"Because you keep asking broad questions."

Duan's expression darkened.

Zhou smiled faintly.

Then Jian Wuchen stepped forward.

The room changed.

Zhou looked at him.

For a moment, Jian saw recognition.

Not of him.

Of Jian Shou.

Zhou's smile disappeared.

"You grew."

Jian said nothing.

Zhou looked at Clear Wind.

The broken sword.

Still the same sword.

Something passed through his expression.

Regret, perhaps.

Jian asked:

"My father."

No one interrupted.

Zhou nodded.

"I know."

"Who killed him?"

Zhou looked toward Qiao.

Then toward the storage jades.

"That's a shorter question than the answer."

"I have time."

Zhou studied him.

Then said:

"Your father found them before I did."

"I know."

"No."

Zhou shook his head.

"You know he found the sword transfers."

Jian waited.

"You know he found the false Seventh."

Another pause.

"You know he discovered they were searching for connections to the First Sword Tomb."

Jian's eyes narrowed.

Zhou placed one storage jade on the table.

"He found the person running the operation."

Silence.

Duan's gaze sharpened.

The Sect Master became completely still.

Jian looked at the jade.

"Who?"

Zhou Xuanji rested one bloodstained hand on the table.

"Before I tell you the name, you need to understand what your father did after he found out."

Jian's expression did not change.

"Why?"

Zhou looked at him.

"Because Jian Shou had a chance to walk away."

The chamber became quiet.

"And he didn't."

Jian's hand rested on Clear Wind.

No surprise.

No anger.

Only recognition.

"That sounds like him."

Zhou Xuanji smiled sadly.

"Yes."

He pushed the jade toward Jian.

"It does."

Outside, the last traces of the purge formation faded from Third Lineage Mountain.

Three years of altered records had survived in fragments.

So had Zhou Xuanji.

And for the first time since Jian Shou died, the people who had spent years following his sword no longer needed to guess where it had gone.

They only needed to hear why it had stopped.
