My Ecchi Superpower System
Chapter 137| Third Distilled Slot
Chapter 137: Chapter 137| Third Distilled Slot
The door clicked shut behind him.
Zane stood in the corridor outside Vael’s office for a moment, not moving anywhere in particular. The hallway was mostly empty now. The last class of the day had ended twenty minutes ago and the building was doing that thing it did in the late afternoon where the foot traffic thinned out and the echo came back.
『 System Reminder: Slot 3 remains empty. No Sigil acquired. 』
’Yeah,’ he thought. ’I know.’
He started walking. Slow, no real direction yet.
He’d been sitting on this longer than he should have. The slot had been open since the upgrade and every time it surfaced in his head he’d filed it under later and kept moving. It was easy to do when there was always something more immediate — the assessment, the folder, Vael’s office just now. But later had a way of calcifying into never if you gave it enough time and enough convenient distractions.
He turned the corner toward the main staircase.
’Two candidates,’ he thought. ’Nil and Nyx.’
He’d mapped them both out mentally weeks ago. Nil’s ability was clean — precise, technical, the kind of output that suited someone who liked to control every variable in a situation. Which he did. But precise and technical wasn’t what the third slot needed right now. The first two slots already covered offense at different intensities. What the third slot needed was something that sat on the other side of that — a defense layer, something that could absorb or redirect before Impact Breaker had to do the heavy lifting in a situation that was already going wrong.
Nyx sigil was Kinetic Force. Redirection. Energy transfer on contact. A defensive ceiling that probably scaled with the more familiarity the system got with her output. It was the smarter call and he knew it had been the smarter call since before he’d even framed it as a decision.
’So Nyx is the play,’ he decided. Properly this time. Out loud in his own head, no more hedging.
『 System Note: The host has made a smart decision. The system supports this. 』
’What a supportive system,’ he thought. ’Truly one of a kind. Really carrying me out here.’
He pulled his communicator out at the bottom of the stairs and checked the time. 4:47 PM. Thursday. He pulled up the academy directory instinctively then stopped — student schedules weren’t on there. He didn’t have her timetable. Didn’t know where she went after class hours or whether she stayed in the building this late.
He stood there for a second doing the math on how to find one specific person in a building this size without looking like he was looking for them.
Then he just started walking down the building.
_ _
Zane happened to find her on the ground floor west corridor twenty minutes later, coming out of the auxiliary study room with a folder under one arm and her blue hair down. She kept it pulled back during class hours. Down looked different, softer at the edges in a way that didn’t match the rest of her.
She clocked him before he said anything. Stopped walking. Waited.
"Hale..."
"Calloway." Flat. Unhurried. Like she’d been half-expecting him to appear at some point and had simply filed it away.
He fell into step beside her, matching her pace. "Do you spar much outside of class sessions?"
She glanced at him sideways. "Depends on the reason."
"I got a new rank. Want to test what it actually does outside of an assessment environment." He kept his voice even, conversational. "Controlled session, just two people, no instructors logging output signatures. You’re the best B-rank sparring option I’ve got right now."
She was quiet for a moment. He could see her processing it, not because she was uncertain, but because she didn’t commit to things without running them through first. It was the same way she’d handled the corridor conversation yesterday. Let it sit, turn it over, check it from a few angles before she said anything.
"What about your girlfriend?" she said. "What would she think about this new development?"
"Maren?" He shrugged. "She’s not directly my girlfriend."
She glared at him. The full weight of it, no blinking.
"Okay..Let me help you out," she said finally. "Saturday. 8 AM. Arena 3. I’ll book it."
"That works," Zane said.
She nodded once. Pulled the folder tighter under her arm. The conversation was apparently closed as far as she was concerned and she was already mentally somewhere else.
Then the system moved.
『 Acquisition Opportunity Detected — Nyx Hale | Kinetic Force (B-rank) | Familiarity: 21% 』
『 Passive aura active. Proximity sufficient. Initiate acquisition? 』
Zane kept his expression completely neutral and his pace completely even.
’Now?’
『 Optimal window. Sustained close proximity. Familiarity will decay with distance over time. Early acquisition recommended. 』
He exhaled once through his nose. Kept walking. Kept his eyes forward.
’Yes.’
『 Acquisition initiated. 』
Nothing visible happened. No sound, no shift in the air, no heat between them. Just the system doing what it always did, operating in a frequency that nobody else could access, pulling at something beneath the surface layer of the moment that neither of them could point to or name.
Nyx took two more steps beside him.
Then she stopped.
It was subtle. The kind of thing you’d walk straight past if you weren’t already watching for something. Her stride broke — barely, just a single beat off her usual rhythm, like something had moved through her that she hadn’t felt coming and hadn’t had time to account for.
She turned her head.
"Zaneee."
She dragged his name out slow and deliberate, like it had personally done something to her and she wanted it to know that she knew.
Zane looked in the opposite direction down the corridor. Studying the far wall with great interest.
"You love my name that much?"
"You know what you did."
"Nah." He looked back at her. "I’m chill."
She stared at him. The flat, eerie, completely unblinking stare that didn’t rush and didn’t waver and made the air around it feel slightly pressurised. A second-year passing between them physically angled away to the other side of the corridor without appearing to realise they’d done it. Self-preservation instinct working correctly.
Zane held the stare. He’d been practicing.
"Something wrong?" he said.
"No." She said it like she was still in the middle of deciding whether that was true. Her eyes stayed on him for another long second, running whatever internal calculation she ran on everything and everyone. She looked forward again.
"Saturday," she said. "Don’t be late."
She walked.
Zane watched her go. Blue hair loose around her shoulders, folder tucked clean under her arm, the same unhurried walk as always, like she knew exactly how much space she occupied in a room and had made a settled peace with all of it a long time ago.
『 Acquisition Complete. 』
『 Slot 3 — Kinetic Force (B-rank) | Output: 0% | Familiarity: 21% 』
He looked at the notification for a long moment.
Zero percent. The slot was filled but the output hadn’t started yet, that was how it always worked with a fresh acquisition. The number would move once the system had something to build on.
’Third slot filled,’ he thought.
