The warehouse was empty by the time Nacho finally stepped outside. Pre-dawn light was bleeding across the eastern horizon, turning the sky from black to gray to something approaching purple. The air tasted clean after the stale interior, and he took a moment to breathe deep and let his enhanced senses sweep the surrounding area.

That’s when he felt it.

A heartbeat. Familiar in a way that made his whole body go still. Steady and strong, with the particular rhythm of someone who’d trained their entire life to stay calm in crisis situations.

His eyes found her half a second after his ears did.

Sera stood at the mouth of the alley leading away from the warehouse, arms crossed over her chest and expression unreadable. She was wearing civilian clothes instead of armor, a simple tunic and trousers that did nothing to diminish the authority radiating from her posture.

She looked past him at the chaos visible through the open warehouse door. Guards being led away in chains. Vance’s people sorting through evidence. The remnants of a fight that had reshaped the power dynamics of an entire city.

Then she looked back at him.

Her eyes dropped to the six tentacles that had been coiling lazily around his shoulders, visible now because he’d forgotten to dismiss them in the aftermath of the operation. They were darker than before, longer, and they moved with a serpentine grace that his original tentacle had never possessed.

Her expression didn’t change.

Her eyes did.

Something flickered in those pale blue depths. Not fear. Not surprise. Something more complicated than either, something that sat in the space between recognition and reassessment.

She’d known he was unusual when she’d first caught him in that infirmary. Had probably suspected he was more dangerous than he appeared.

But she hadn’t expected this.

Neither had he, if he was being honest.

The silence stretched between them, heavy with questions neither of them had asked yet. The first light of dawn crept across the cobblestones, painting everything in shades of gold and shadow.

Finally, Sera uncrossed her arms and spoke.

"You’ve been busy."

Nacho dismissed the tentacles with a thought, watching them fade into invisibility like smoke in morning wind. The pre-dawn light caught the sharp angles of Sera’s face, and for a moment he was struck by how different she looked out of armor. Smaller, somehow. More human.

But the eyes were the same. Those pale blue eyes that missed nothing and gave away even less.

"Three days," he said. "You’ve been in the city for three days and didn’t think to mention it."

"I wanted to see what you’d do without a leash." She tilted her head toward the warehouse behind him, where Vance’s people were still processing the scene. "Apparently the answer is topple criminal empires and make enemies of High Chancellors."

"To be fair, the High Chancellor thing was kind of an accident."

"Was it?"

The question hung between them like a blade waiting to fall. Nacho activated Mind Fortress on instinct, brushing against her surface thoughts, and found exactly what he expected. Nothing. Her mental defenses were a wall of polished steel, impenetrable and cold.

Same as always. She shows you what she wants you to see and nothing else.

"You tracked me here," he said. It wasn’t a question.

"I’ve had your location since you entered the Mortal World. My Talent doesn’t require proximity." She uncrossed her arms and walked toward him, her boots making no sound on the cobblestones. "You’re not subtle, you know. The massage parlor in the Velvet House. The dungeon runs. The Sanctum heist that everyone is still talking about even though no one knows who did it."

She stopped three feet away, close enough that he could smell salt and something metallic on her skin. Blood, maybe. Old blood, washed away but never quite forgotten.

"The phoenix feather was a nice touch," she added. "Robbing the most secure vault in the city to save a street rat’s dying sister. Very heroic."

"I’m not a hero."

"No. You’re not." Her lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile. "Heroes don’t run tentacle massage parlors out of brothels."

The words landed like a slap, and Nacho felt his jaw tighten before he could stop it. He’d known this conversation was coming. Had been dreading it since Vex dropped that particular bomb about Sera’s arrival.

But hearing it out loud, stated so plainly, made it real in a way it hadn’t been before.

"How much do you know?"

"Enough." She started walking, angling away from the warehouse toward the empty streets beyond. "Walk with me. We have things to discuss, and I’d rather not do it within earshot of an Inquisitor who’s already suspicious of you."

He fell into step beside her, his Apex Senses sweeping the area for threats while his mind raced through possibilities. She knew about the Velvet House. That meant she probably knew about the girls he’d been using to farm Talents. About the techniques he employed. About everything.

And she’s not trying to arrest me. Which means she either doesn’t care or she needs something from me that outweighs whatever moral objections she might have.

They walked in silence for several minutes, moving through the warehouse district toward the merchant quarter. The streets were empty at this hour, the city caught in that strange liminal space between night and day when even criminals went to sleep.

Finally, Sera spoke.

"Lumen is falling apart."

The words were flat, delivered without emotion, but Nacho caught something underneath them. A weight that hadn’t been there during their last conversation in that infirmary room.

"The Elders?"

"Korith has been consolidating power since you left. She’s convinced half the council that I’m incompetent, and the other half that I’m actively working against Siren interests." Sera’s voice remained steady, but her hands had curled into fists at her sides. "The expedition I led, the one that failed, she’s using it as proof that I should be removed from command."

"And Voss?"

"Still on our side. For now. But he’s old, and his influence is waning." She glanced at him, her pale eyes catching the growing light. "The Berserker Tide has been moving closer to Lumen. Small raids at first, testing our defenses. Two weeks ago they sank a supply convoy that was supposed to feed the outer districts for a month."
