Chapter 207: Chapter 194: The Return of the Freshmen via the South City Gate Route
Two Tier Four High-Grade Soul Beasts!
A Wind Howling Tiger!
A Roaring Cloud Chilong!
Li Heng froze for a moment when he got a clear look at the details of the two massive Soul Beasts in the distance.
He was familiar with the route from the South City Gate. After all, he had just traveled it a week ago. What left the deepest impression on him was the checkpoint at the 300-li mark—that Soul Beast Sealing Altar.
’So there really are Tier Four Soul Beasts. Meteor University really is something else!’
He had to admit, after seeing the two enormous Soul Beasts flying in the sky, Li Heng suddenly understood the "joy" of the upperclassmen around him.
There was a certain pleasure to this kind of "armchair spectating." Being in no danger yourself, you could just enjoy the show and watch the new students get worked up.
"Is it these two again this year? Seriously, you’d think the school could get a little more creative. I remember the dean has a Tier Five Soul Beast, doesn’t he?"
"Eh, these two will do. It’s not like these freshmen have seen anything, so a Tier Four is probably enough."
"How come I’m not hearing any screams for help yet? I’m starting a petition to crank up the intensity next year!"
...
Watching the two Tier Four Soul Beasts soaring in the distance and listening to the amused chatter of the upperclassmen, Li Heng gradually "blended in" with the spectating crowd.
After all, them being Tier Four Soul Beasts was one thing, but Li Heng had also clearly seen the status of the two enormous creatures: Pet.
After a moment’s thought, Li Heng understood. These two Tier Four High-Grade Soul Beasts must be a teacher’s pets.
Meteor University had set this Tier Four Soul Beast trap without preparing any countermeasures because they didn’t need any. After all, you just had to command the pets not to hurt the students. Why would you need a backup plan for that?
Li Heng knew they were pets because of his system’s information display. And judging by the attitude of the upperclassmen around him, they probably knew as well.
But even if everyone else knew, the freshmen who were actually on the outing had no idea!
As far as the freshmen were concerned, they had genuinely encountered Tier Four Soul Beasts. Knowing they couldn’t possibly win a fight, they began to flee for their lives.
And they couldn’t run away from the university, either. Their only choice was to run *towards* it—after all, that’s where the teachers were!
Seeing the clouds of dust billowing up from the ground in the distance, he didn’t even have to guess. The scene of the freshmen fleeing had to be chaotic, and every last one of them was surely running with all their might.
’Good thing I didn’t fall for the trick, or I’d probably be in that fleeing crowd right now.’
Li Heng put himself in their shoes. If he had seen this scene without knowing the truth, he would have bolted too.
And he would’ve been damn fast about it, too!
You had to hand it to Meteor University. When it came to "caring" for its students’ personal growth, they were second to none—so very thoughtful.
Since Li Heng had seen through the whole charade, he simply stood atop the gate wall, watching the clouds of dust and the Soul Beasts slowly "closing in" on Meteor University.
—
"He... Help!" (xN)
"Teacher, save me!" (xN)
"Tea... cher!" (xN)
"Waaah..." (xN)
...
About ten minutes later, Li Heng could hear waves of panicked shouts, cries for help, and even sobbing.
Hearing these sounds, Li Heng was mostly curious. The upperclassmen around him, however, were all smiling, and some of the older male students even started interacting with the freshmen from afar.
They shouted things like, "Don’t be afraid, girls!" across the distance.
The replies from the freshmen, however, were indistinct—just a chaotic jumble of voices.
"ROAR—"
"HUFF—"
The two massive Tier Four Soul Beasts in the sky were now very close to the South City Gate. Perhaps they felt that simply flying around was getting boring, or maybe they received a new command.
After letting out successive roars, clouds of mist suddenly billowed from their mouths, aimed squarely at the fleeing freshmen below.
The freshmen were already running fast, but after the two Soul Beasts made their move, they ran even faster, their shouts growing more frantic and chaotic.
Li Heng could see clearly from the gate wall. The two Soul Beasts were just roaring for effect, showing no real intention to attack. The white mist they spat out simply hung in the air, never descending to the ground.
But if you didn’t know the truth, the whole spectacle was quite intimidating.
"Students, hurry and get inside the gate! Once you’re all safely inside, we can repel the Soul Beasts!"
As the students were running in a chaotic frenzy, a resonant male voice boomed from the South City Gate. The voice sounded familiar to Li Heng, and after a moment’s thought, he realized it was the male teacher in charge of the outing.
He looked toward the source of the voice and saw that the teacher had appeared at the South City Gate at some point and was now hovering in the air above it.
For the freshmen rushing toward the South City Gate, the teacher’s appearance was a shot in the arm, giving them a tremendous sense of relief.
He was a beacon of hope in their desperate plight!
"Teacher! Hurry and save us!"
"Those two Soul Beasts up there... they’re too... too terrifying! Teacher, save us!"
...
Joy welled up in the freshmen’s hearts, and they pushed themselves to run even harder. For them, the hope of rescue was right before their eyes.
Li Heng watched the scene unfold with mixed feelings, but he didn’t say anything out loud, just like the upperclassmen around him. After all, no one was going to get killed. They might as well just enjoy the show.
