Chapter 595: Chapter 595

He shifted.

The sustained nightmare application continued — background pressure, ongoing drain. He didn’t reduce it. He added to it.

[TERROR AURA — LEGENDARY + FEAR INCARNATE]

The Terror Aura was a passive output — the specific quality of Satou’s presence after everything he’d absorbed and become, the supernatural fear-inducing quality that had made the settlement’s enemies hesitate, that had made the council chamber go quiet. Against Chronus, who had been in combat for centuries and whose capacity for rational function under pressure was foundational to his entire identity, the Terror Aura alone wouldn’t achieve anything notable.

Combined with Fear Incarnate — the ability to manifest as the physical embodiment of terror, making the psychological reality of fear into something that pressed against consciousness whether or not the target chose to acknowledge it — and layered on top of the sustained nightmare application already running:

Chronus’s cognitive load increased.

Not dramatically. Not the half-second freeze of the targeted fear surfacing. A sustained 8-12% increase in the background resources required to maintain full operational function.

8-12% felt small.

Against a being running four simultaneous drains — seal, halt, working maintenance, fight — 8-12% was the difference between sustainable and approaching threshold.

Chronus displaced.

The interval was 0.09 seconds longer than the previous displacement.

[PSYCHIC ANNIHILATION — LEGENDARY: TARGETED STREAM APPLICATION]

He added a fifth element — not the full devastating mental attack that Psychic Annihilation could be, but a single targeted stream directed at the specific part of Chronus’s consciousness that managed the barrier’s power connection network. The connections he’d severed with Absolute Severance had been rebuilt through the redundant network. He began severing the redundant connections.

Not all of them. One at a time, sequentially, the mental attack finding each connection in the network and cutting it, forcing Chronus to rebuild through the next layer of redundancy.

Each rebuild took Chronus’s attention.

Each rebuild consumed mana.

Each rebuild was marginally slower than the last as the network reduced to less efficient tiers.

After twelve rebuilds, the barrier’s field density was 91% of maximum.

Sustainable. Still effective. But 9% less effective than it had been.

[VOID FANG + SHADOW ABSOLUTE MOVEMENT]

He hit the 9% gap.

The strike connected differently than the previous contact points had — not the glancing, partial-force hits that the full-density barrier had allowed. This one arrived with 9% more of Satou’s full output at the moment of contact.

The difference was visible.

Chronus was moved four feet by the impact — not two, not three. Four. The specific distance of an impact that had reached through a barrier at reduced density.

He stood four feet from his previous position and looked at Satou with the analytical eyes.

"Sequential redundancy targeting through Psychic Annihilation," he said. "While maintaining the nightmare background and the Terror Aura." He paused. "You’re layering drains on my processing capacity while simultaneously stripping my barrier’s efficiency."

"Yes," Satou said.

"That’s—" Chronus stopped. "That’s significantly better coordination than I was told you were capable of."

"Richard didn’t know what I’d become," Satou said. "You built your model on an old version."

Chronus looked at him.

"Yes," he said. "I did."

=====

The Temporal Echo ability was the thing that bothered Chronus most.

Not because of its tactical effectiveness — it was effective, but in the same category as several other abilities Satou was combining. What bothered him was specifically what it was. A technique Richard had developed from his hybrid origin. A method that existed nowhere in the demon realm except in the being who’d created it and in the being who’d consumed that being.

When Satou used it, Chronus felt it in a way that had nothing to do with the tactical impact.

He felt it in the way he’d described in their pre-fight conversation — the emptiness that had been where Richard was, the specific structural absence of the thirty percent of himself he’d held outside for Richard’s entire existence. When Satou generated a temporal echo using Richard’s technique, derived from Richard’s nature, powered now by Satou’s vastly amplified capability — the technique in the air felt familiar in a way that combat techniques had no business feeling.

It felt like Richard had made it.

Because at some level, it was Richard who had made it. The knowledge, the specific construction, the foundational framework of the ability — all of it had come from Richard. Satou was the vessel. Richard’s architecture was the ability.

Which meant, every time Satou used Temporal Echo, Chronus was fighting the thirty percent of himself he’d lost.

He’d told Satou before the fight that he needed to have the conversation. He’d meant it. He hadn’t been lying when he said the grief was real.

But he also hadn’t been fully prepared for what it would feel like to watch that thirty percent deployed against him in combat, from inside the being who’d taken it.

He displaced.

The displacement was 0.11 seconds longer than the previous one.

[TEMPORAL ECHO x4]

Satou generated four — pushing the Richard-derived ability through the Ancient God’s amplified capability, generating more simultaneous temporal displacements than Richard had ever been capable of, the four echoes attacking from four different points in his personal timeline simultaneously.

Chronus’s displacement tried to find the moment before all four.

It couldn’t.

He found the moment before three of them. The fourth connected.

The impact was significant — not the glancing contact of the earlier exchanges, a committed hit from an echo that arrived at the temporal position Chronus had displaced to, the echo having been placed in that position rather than arriving there.

Chronos absorbed it — moved with it, the combat experience of centuries turning a hit that would have staggered less seasoned fighters into a repositioning — but the force was real and the repositioning it forced took him to a less optimal position relative to Satou’s next movement.

Satou came in.

[ASSASSINATION ARTS — TECHNIQUE #134: CONCEPTUAL WEAKNESS EXPLOITATION]

The technique combined Void Fang with the nightmare-based conceptual understanding to attack the idea of Chronus’s physical form rather than the physical form itself — making the flesh forget how to be solid in the specific sections where the technique landed, creating temporary cohesion failure in the material of a temporal lord’s physical manifestation.
