Chapter 331: Full Measure
The rise did not give them any breathing room
Lirael’s second charge was stronger than the first, Outer God pressure pushing constructs of hers in linked pairs up the broken stone. Containment layered over containment to shrink the area Team Zero occupied.
Lucian met the charge head-on
There was no warning, no change in his stance, only that he stepped forward and the air around him grew heavier. The first construct to reach him was already folding in on itself, limbs and core housing peeling inward as if the space it occupied had decided it was finished. One Specialist tried to trap him with a containment pattern built from twin rods, but Lucian simply stepped through the space the construct had occupied and took the nearest Specialist by the front of his gear, driving him backward into the stone until cracks spiderwebbed out from under his knees.
Evelyn kept close to Lucian’s right, taking advantage of the opening he’d created. She didn’t waste a second, cutting through any Specialist who tried to turn his maneuver into an opening. Neither did Lucian
Marc forced the geometry of containment fields to twist in a series of brutal corrections that collapsed angles and turned lanes of pressure sideways. Two linked constructs screamed in frustration as their containment fields failed, their mass pressing against each other until metal rang against metal. Silas took a shot to the chest from an erasure Special, staggered, then drove the charge back into the machine’s core with a shoulder charge. Reia was already flowing with him, her telepathy cutting through the tangle of signals like a knife through water
Orders stuttered and hesitated, half-finished transmissions hanging in the air. One construct turned its attention to a non-existent weakness while Reia’s telepathy smothered the signal in its skull. Her eyes were cold, more so than usual, the calculations running beneath her thoughts layered and complex enough that Lucy could almost follow them. "Three on the right are about to link," she said at last. "Vyn."
Vyn lifted both hands, and the magic in the air bent.
Not broken, not cut, but twisted, the containment patterns of the three constructs contorting until their fields collapsed in on themselves. Outer God pressure near their flank was already lighter, the rules bending to Vyn’s will for the first time since they’d begun the charge. One Specialist’s rod spat a blast of containment magic back at him, while another construct’s suppression field folded inward, locking its own joints. Vyn’s expression remained distant as if she was listening to something only she could hear.
Lucy opened the center
Hellflame did not erupt, not in great tongues or spirals of fire, but in narrow bands of deathly heat that curled into sheets of white-hot energy. The first rank of Specialists who tried to press the center simply vanished where the fire had touched them, their gear and bodies turned to ash that had little time to fall before the next wave came. One construct managed to push through the center, only for Lucy’s fire to fold around it and crush it into dust.
"Hold the crest," Lucian ordered.
They did.
Lirael forced her way into the heart of the killbox, pale light carving a path through her own formation. She went after Lucian directly, and for a moment it was only the two of them. Their clash carved a trench into the rock as containment and erasure battled raw will. Lirael tried to unravel the space Lucian occupied, but he simply refused to be unraveled. He was the most frightening thing on the battlefield, not because he burned brighter than Lucy’s hellflame or bent the rules as easily as Vyn, but because he moved with certainty, knowing already that he would win.
Specialists who got within striking distance suddenly found that survival mattered more than their carefully practiced formations. Even the Outer God pressure near him was more careful, flowing around him as if it understood that he was an exception, a fixed point that the battle had to work around rather than something that could be ignored.
Evelyn drove a Specialist into Lucy’s fire without sparing a glance for Lucian’s flank. "She’s trying to isolate you."
"I know."
Marc’s voice rang out from the right. "Outer line is thickening. If they box us in, we won’t be able to get off the crest."
Reia’s eyes were unfocused for a moment. "They’ll finish the box in under a minute if we don’t break their rear anchors."
"Break them," Lucian said.
Vyn and Marc moved at nearly the same time, magic and space bending inward on the Specialist supports holding the box together on Lirael’s left. The structures failed with a sound like tearing steel, the box stuttering as it neared the top of the rise
Silas and Reia took advantage of the pause, driving into the broken formation with everything they had. He took the space created by the failure at full speed, his body a blur of motion, and Reia wove false orders into the tangle of signals until two constructs turned their fire on each other.
Lucy flowed through the center once more, her hellflame licking at the edges of Lirael’s formation to drive back the few constructs that had taken up positions near Lucian’s flanks. The fire scorched the edges of his coat, but left the fabric intact. The flames knew whose territory they were in.
Lirael’s mouth twisted in something between a sneer and a grimace, her carefully constructed mask of calculated detachment fracturing for the first time. "You can’t hold this for long," she said.
"We don’t have to," Lucian replied, forcing her back another step. Behind them, the Outer God’s presence pushed forward, the sheer weight of it sending shockwaves down to the lowest rocks at the base of the rise. Lesser constructs forced their way up the approach, their ranks thick and unyielding. Their combined pressure sought to overwhelm Vyn’s interference and smother Lucy’s flame with sheer persistence.
Team Zero did not break.
Vyn growled, her magic twisting the local laws to create pockets of useful space within the oppressive pressure. Lucy answered the call, her hellflame forming a narrow column that punched through the thick resistance with a blast of heat and fury. Reia fed fresh contradictions into the signal matrices holding the constructs together, slowing them just long enough for Marc to carve the space necessary to hold the crest. All the while, Silas cut through anything that got close enough to try and end their advance
And Lucian pushed through Lirael’s defenses
Not as easily as before, not without cost, but he pushed through nonetheless. He took the fight to her, closing the distance until she had to abandon her preferred range in favor of something closer. Evelyn was there to take advantage of the shift, forcing Lirael to divide her attention between two opponents rather than one.
The rise was still theirs.
Blood slicked the sleeve of Silas’s coat, and Marc’s nose was already bleeding from the strain. Vyn’s hands shook as she stabilized the laws, and Lucy’s jaw was tight enough to look painful. Reia’s eyes were far too bright, and a cut scored Evelyn’s temple, but none of it mattered. None of it was important compared to the woman who stood at the center of them all, Lucian.
Lirael fell back three paces, raising a hand and signaling to the construct forces behind her. Whatever strength her forward units had must have been enough, because the pressure from the Outer God no longer pushed forward, choosing instead to wait and see what else Team Zero had in store.
Team Zero did not run. They held the crest, their energies still burning in the air around them, waiting for the next order that would decide what came next. No one suggested breaking and running, not when there was nothing left in them that wanted to follow the old patterns. Only the fight remained, and the people still in it.
