Chapter 375: The Name That Should Not Exist
They did not backtrack towards the Varn Thal gates.
Rhel led them along the dry channel until the sealed ground fell well behind and the first broken storagesheds of east outer ward began to appear against the pale sky – it was still early and the city had not begun to turn its attention outward, but none of them were so foolish as to expect the noise to last.
Sera walked close to Lucian, assessing his face as if expecting him to fail after the test. "You look like the man who got answers he did not want.
"I got answers," Lucian said. "Wanting is a whole other story."
Istra continued to watch Rhel more than the road. "You said there was more. Say it before the city comes back for us."
Rhel halted underneath the shadow of a collapsed aqueduct support and turned towards them, her two Quiet Line companions taking position further out in a thin ring of warning space.
"The test confirmed what my circle feared and hoped at the same time," Rhel said. "You are not not only bearing a remnant of Cael’s power, and you answered with a separate will – meaning that one is not completely arbitrary."
Lucian waited out the rest of her pause.
Rhel continued, "When Cael withdrew, he not only sealed his frameworks and walked out of the old vote – he placed a contingency fail-safe inside. It was never meant to activate for regular conflict, house greed, or Authority process, only if the higher seats tried to rewrite infinity itself or claim his power as a public law."
Sera frowned. "Rewrite infinity."
"Bound it, divided it, or twisted into something the Lords could share and wield," Rhel said. "Cael refused to accept that, and when it became clear he could not win the argument cleanly, he withdrew himself from it. But was not so careless as to leave his back completely open to invasion – so he created a contingency identity, buried it so deeply that even most of his people only know it is a theoretical."
Istra’s voice was tight. "And you think Lucian is that contingency."
"I think the test left little room for anything else," Rhel said, looking straight at Lucian. "You are not not simply tied to Cael – in the old design, you are the failsafe that should not have existed until the absolutely worst case moved into place."
Their eyes met with unspoken weight.
Lucian found Cael quieter than usual at the edge of his mind, as if the man himself was considering how much could actually be said within the constraints.
"Is she right?" Lucian asked, under his breath.
Cael’s response came at a slow flow. "She is closer than almost any has been. I left more than tools when I walked away – I placed a path that could wake if the seats were ever pushed beyond restraint. I did not foresee that it would happen like this or contain a will this full."
Lucian turned his eyes up at Rhel. "If I am that contingency, then the ones pursuing me are not only greedy – they are standing very near to the thing that should prevent them from being able to take much more."
"Yes," Rhel said. "Which is also the same reason why some will attempt to own you, some to erase your existence, and not a few will seek to wake the rest of what Cael left inside of you before you learn how its pieces should be used."
Sera rubbed her temples. "So the truth of the archive was only half what he said. He did not just leave an empty seat to be taken – he also carved a hidden answer in case the empty seat was not sufficient."
"That is the shape of it," Rhel said.
Istra paces a short line across the dry stone. "If it leaves the Quiet Linen, it changes every major faction’s tactics on the very same day. Authority will stop talking of review and start with contain any cost proposals, Ash Vale will stop trying to bargain – and even the remnant run the risk of splitting between those who want his preservation and control the failsafe himself."
"It will leave," Rhel said. "Tests like that always make some noise. We may have a day – maybe less."
Lucian takes up his stillness and allows the implications to settle.
He entered the Primordial Expanse chasing one truth about what it was that drove Cael away – but he found something heavier instead, that it actually was his own personal existence that was bound to Cael’s last design – for the highest seats of power.
"What was the contingency’s purpose, then?" he asked.
Rhel’s eyes never left him. "To stop the rewrite and preserve a living path of infinity that did not belong to the Lords as a shared weapon. Beyond that, even my circle only knows fragments – Cael trusted few enough with the entire shape."
Sera looks at Lucian. "Please tell me you are not going to follow this with this makes it all easier."
"It does not, actually," Lucian said. "It makes the road to the next point clearer – I will now not be satisfied with hiding in cites and refusing local claims, because either sooner or later the higher seats become the problem."
Istra ceases his pacing. "That is a much bigger war than Varn Thal."
"I know," Lucian said.
Rhel nodded once where she expected that turn. "Then you should understand why my people was required to test you before offering any additional help – failsafe with no will is a catastrophe and a failsafe with will is a challenger."
Sera expels air heavily. "I picked out a terrible man to stand beside."
Lucian almost smiles, tiredly. "You did."
Horns sound distantly from out towards the city – and a space. Rhel’s companions both turn simultaneously.
"That is not market noise" Istra said
"No," Rhel agreed. "It is reaction – someone heard the sealed ground open and close."
Lucian looks out over Varn Thal, where the pale towers are already catching light. It is not only his truth anymore, that some pieces of it has already begun to move ahead of him in people and messengers who can no longer be stopped
"So we do not go back into the city at the center," he said. "We hang out long enough on the edges and then decide the next move, with the whole truth spread between us."
Rhel watches him closely. "And what do you call yourself now that you know?"
Lucian responds without turning his gaze from the city.
"Still Lucian" he said. "If the failsafe has another name, is might wait until I decide it actually matters."
Sealed ground behind them remains untouched and silent.
Varn Thal ahead begins to wake up into a day which will not treat any of them lightly any longer.
