Chapter 378: The Missing Side
The copied foot lifted Hesh’s roof hospital by two centimeters.
Bed wheels rolled east until their brakes caught.
Lani Sorr held Nema Tir’s blood clamp with one hand and the west bed rail with the other.
"Floor moved. Line remains clean."
Sixty other bed keepers reported separately.
Jori Neh received the count beside the lower probe board.
The road beneath them matched Caleb’s lost left leg from hip angle to heel pressure. It did not carry his current body.
At Foundry Twelve, Caleb lay at eighteen meters with one hand in the foundation trench. The open space beneath his left hip pointed toward Hesh.
Kestrel proposed a dead section between the copied leg and every current support.
The method required a place that no person, treatment line, roof beam, water route, or keeper function occupied.
Hesh’s west hospital floor matched the shape.
It was not empty.
Thirty-two beds crossed that side. Eight held patients who could not survive a stair transfer. The roof drainage reserve ran through its wall, and Nema’s blood line hung from its ceiling track.
Kestrel read every load before naming the option.
"If Hesh releases the west floor as dead space, the copied leg loses a current endpoint. The floor may also lose all support."
Jori asked Lani for the hospital answer.
Lani asked each bed keeper for a current position.
Twenty-four refused floor release.
Three accepted after their patients chose transfer.
Five held no answer because the patients lacked current capacity and no prior instruction covered dropping the room beneath them.
Lani did not convert silence into permission.
"Hospital refuses the dead section," she told Jori.
The copied foot rose another centimeter.
Concrete opened under Bed Twelve. Its keeper, Pera Noll, pushed a steel tray across the crack. The tray bent and kept one wheel from falling through.
At North Pump, Nemi stood above the dry inspection shaft where Pump Four had entered itself before the origin alarm.
No person occupied the shaft.
Its old pressure pipe had been removed. Two mechanical stops held the cover under different crews. The eastern stop belonged to Nemi’s pump crew. The western stop belonged to repair keeper Hadi Orr.
The empty shaft matched the copied leg’s heel.
North Pump could accept that heel as an object, close both stops around it, and release the surrounding shaft from every pump function.
The leg would gain a route from Hesh to North Pump for the length of the transfer.
No one could prove where its toes would go after the stops closed.
Nemi sent the choice to North Pump’s 494 residents through four local boards.
One board lost power. Three returned positions.
Two hundred eleven accepted the risk to the dry shaft.
One hundred forty-eight refused.
Seventy-one requested more time.
Sixty-four had not yet received a board.
The copied foot raised Hesh another centimeter while the count continued.
Nemi did not call 211 a settlement majority.
She asked whether the two stop crews accepted their own bounded actions.
Her eastern crew accepted closure after the heel entered and retained a manual reopening handle.
Hadi’s western crew refused until every worker left the inspection trench.
Three workers climbed out.
The fourth, Seno Varr, had a broken ankle from Pump Four’s first turn. He could move through the maintenance crawl if someone pulled his belt.
Nemi offered her uninjured hand.
Seno refused it.
"Your hand owns the east stop. Keep it there."
Hadi’s cable keeper lowered an ordinary rope. Seno clipped his own belt and accepted the pull to the crawl entrance only.
The copied leg pressed Bed Twelve through Pera’s tray.
Nema’s blood bag swung against its stand.
Jori still did not release the hospital floor.
Seno crossed the trench line on his elbows.
Hadi accepted the western stop.
North Pump opened the dry shaft.
At Foundry Twelve, the empty space beneath Caleb’s left hip darkened into a road cut.
He could close it by growing silver across the absence.
No silver moved.
"The missing side stays missing," he said.
Soma accepted no substitute plate, brace memory, or recorded leg function into the space.
Hesh released only the copied heel from its current ground. The hospital retained beds, floor, drainage, and treatment authority.
North Pump accepted only the heel as an incoming object.
The road snapped tight.
The copied leg vanished beneath Hesh.
Bed Twelve dropped six centimeters and stopped on cracked concrete. Pera’s tray folded around the wheel.
Nema’s line remained open.
At North Pump, a twenty-six-meter cutter leg drove upward through the dry inspection shaft.
Nemi closed the eastern stop around its ankle.
Hadi waited for his crew’s hand mark and closed the western stop.
The steel cover split between them. Neither stop released.
The copied knee struck the pump house roof. Empty sheet metal tore away, exposing the joint to rain.
North Pump’s two live water machines stayed outside the shaft relation.
The silver hip joint tried to find a body above it.
It found none.
Nemi released Pump Four’s old name from the shaft ledger. Hadi released the trench from repair service. Seno released his broken tool bag where it lay below.
The shaft became a separate hole with a hostile leg inside it.
The leg lost its copied hip angle.
Its cutter foot folded against the two stops.
North Pump crews packed the exposed joint with dry ceramic breaker blocks. No block carried water or resident shelter.
The leg stopped moving.
Hesh’s 604 residents kept their roof and hospital. North Pump kept both live water machines and 494 current people.
The transfer did not end at the trapped heel.
Abeni Kalu reported from Kiln Steps.
The settlement’s broken water-stair bracket had lifted from its wall.
It carried the copied toe angle that North Pump had cut away.
Kiln Steps’ three hand-pump crews occupied separate terraces. The lowest terrace had an empty kiln court large enough for a dead section.
The upper terrace did not.
One hundred nine residents lived above it, including nineteen people in the treatment room beside Pump Three.
Abeni offered the empty lower court from her clay-frame crew.
The toe ignored it.
Pump Three keeper Jessa Mol tested a west wall release. The treatment room floor tilted with it, pulling three bed frames toward the missing water stair.
She stopped after one degree.
Seven patients could travel down the rear ramp with current assistance. Five could move only if Pump Three kept pressure in their breathing jars. Four were under active wound care, and three had not answered the evacuation question.
Jessa retained the wall.
"I will not make this room absent while they are in it."
Abeni accepted that refusal for the clay frame and nothing else.
The lower crews offered two hand-pump pistons as physical stops. Their handles remained under separate workers. Neither piston reached the upper wall without crossing the treatment floor.
Abeni left them local.
She sent six uninjured residents up the rear ramp with bottle crates and splint boards. They gained no right to move a patient who refused or could not answer.
Jessa assigned each person to a requested bedside task.
It rose through the occupied upper wall.
North Pump had trapped the leg and saved Hesh.
Kiln Steps now carried the severed end.
Nemi entered that result beside her acceptance before anyone could call the method successful without a destination cost.
Public feeds received both records within the hour.
The Restoration Bloc cut the Hesh refusal from its clip and sold the North Pump stop sequence as `THE EMPTY-SIDE SHIELD`.
The Private Continuity Party packaged a second version with automatic shaft acceptance and remote closure.
Neither product named Kiln Steps on its front page.
The full terms sat eleven pages deeper. A destination-loss paragraph assigned every severed end to `uncovered adjacent infrastructure` and offered no count, notice duty, or treatment exception.
North Pump’s acceptance became proof of operation. Hesh’s refusal became proof that local delay endangered subscribers.
Nemi demanded both campaigns remove her stop sequence.
The Restoration Bloc answered that emergency actions recorded on public feeds could not be privately withheld.
At Kiln Steps, no one had time to answer the legal claim.
At the upper terrace, the copied toe broke through Pump Three’s treatment wall.
