Chapter 386: The Leg He Does Not Have
The body crossed the loading bay in three steps.
Its first foot crushed Rack Five. Its second landed inside the empty disposal pit. The left socket struck the floor where a leg should have completed the stance. Concrete accepted the missing shape and broke around it.
Veki Orl opened the east freight wall.
Cold air entered behind twenty-seven Ash Quarter residents; the wall led to an outdoor evidence yard with no tested shelter from the body. Boro Tann sent six tram workers out to check the gate and ground before tracing the current route.
The body pulled its arm from the pit and reached for the west evidence room.
South Bank’s stair keeper dropped two empty cabinets into its hand. The fingers closed through thin metal. Forty-nine residents moved behind the cabinets while the clinic worker counted the four injured people separately.
The delay lasted four seconds. Caleb reached the retired storage road at eighteen meters tall.
Foundry Twelve’s west crew had opened a freight route through three industrial yards. His external rail brace struck sparks from the road at every step. He carried no removable plate and no left-side counterweight. Four crane crews held separate guide lines from roofs he had permission to use.
The brace had been built for travel, not impact. Its lower rail could carry his weight while straight and less than half during a lateral turn. Foundry crews had replaced two heat-warped pins after Chapter 377 and had no third set in the road convoy. Caleb received those limits before he entered the storage block.
Police had cleared the industrial road. Three warehouse crews kept their own gates and roof lines, with separate withdrawal authority. Caleb could cross their ground; he could not turn any wall into support without its current keeper.
The body turned without a head. Its empty socket touched the floor first, and two lower hands followed. The stance copied the turn Caleb had lost with his left leg.
Caleb did not answer it. He put his right foot against a loading ramp and drove his shoulder into the body’s upper ribs.
The impact lifted both of them through the storage roof.
Gray plates opened along the body’s back as one arm caught Caleb’s hip and another closed around the rail brace. Two of the remaining arms struck the road. One took the roof, and the last hit the loading bay, keeping the body upright without a central spine.
Caleb compressed the wrist at his hip.
The joint narrowed. It did not stop. Black seams moved around the compression and transferred the hand’s load into two shoulders. The fingers stayed closed.
"It distributes damage," Caleb said through the yard feed.
"Your right side is taking the full return," Pela answered from Mercy. "Seven seconds before the hip frame tears."
Caleb released the wrist at five.
The body threw him across the evidence yard.
His rail brace hit first. Two guide crews released before their roof anchors pulled free. A third retained its line long enough to keep Caleb’s shoulder away from the east freight gate. The fourth line snapped after its crew had withdrawn and cut a parked truck in half.
No one occupied the truck.
Boro’s six workers reported the outdoor yard current and clear to the north fence. The route held thirty people per section if they stayed below the concrete divider. Boro sent Ash Quarter in two groups and kept the last four with him.
Veki offered the route to South Bank. Their stair keeper inspected the divider through a hand camera and accepted it for thirty-two residents. Seventeen remained with the injured group and clinic worker.
The body climbed out of the storage roof. Caleb rose on his right leg and brace. He had used falling against his copied torso at Foundry Twelve. This body had watched the result through the carrier’s learned geometry.
He let his shoulder dip anyway.
The body moved before he fell. Three arms spread under his missing side. A fourth hooked the rail brace. Instead of predicting a leg, it caught the current absence and lifted.
Caleb left the road.
The brace remained inside the body’s hand. Its upper clamp tore skin from his hip before the emergency pin released. Caleb struck the loading ramp on his right shoulder and rolled through an empty guard booth.
His large body had no standing support.
The body wore the brace across two arms and bent it into the shape of a left femur.
"Do not give that back to me," Caleb said.
Foundry crews killed every remote lock on the brace. The hardware stayed physical. It retained no authority over his body, but its length gave the attacker a usable bone.
The body charged the east freight gate.
Fifty-five residents had reached the outdoor yard while seventeen South Bank residents and Boro’s last four remained inside. Veki’s broken wrist prevented her from turning the freight-wall crank again. Storage worker Hani Orrek took the handle after naming the people carried by the wall and route.
The gate needed twelve seconds to close.
Caleb could not stand for twelve.
He grew his right arm across the road and caught a drainage tower with one hand. The tower had no current occupants and a municipal keeper who accepted one pull. Caleb used it to drag his body into the charge.
The six-armed body struck him chest first.
Two arms pinned his right shoulder. One drove the bent brace toward the empty socket along its own side. The other three reached past him for the freight gate.
Caleb bit through the brace’s upper guide cable.
The body pushed harder.
He took the lower brace rail in both hands and compressed the middle. The rail folded inside the body’s grip. It became shorter than the socket it was meant to fill.
One arm adjusted. Two others shifted to catch Caleb’s fall.
The body had learned the fall.
It had not learned that Caleb would destroy his only standing equipment while still inside it.
Caleb released the drainage tower. His full eighteen-meter mass dropped through the bent brace. The rail entered the mouth beneath the body’s collarbone. Its teeth closed around the brace instead of Caleb’s shoulder.
He compressed once.
The brace broke into seven pieces inside the mouth.
Three teeth came out with it.
The road buckled beneath both bodies and stayed open beside the divider.
Caleb hit the road on his right side. The body recoiled from physical loss and stepped away from the gate. Hani completed the final crank turn.
The freight wall closed between the body and the twenty-one people who had remained inside. Veki opened a smaller personnel door into the outdoor yard. Boro and the clinic worker moved their groups through under separate counts.
All seventy-six living residents reached the north side of the concrete divider.
Caleb remained large and prone on the storage road.
He had no rail brace, left leg, safe compression frame, or roof line still attached. His right shoulder moved. His hip wound bled around the released clamp. Shrinking would reduce his mass but would not give him a way to stand after it ended.
Pela sent three local equipment options. Caleb rejected the first because its truck jack shared one remote operator. He rejected the second because it required a plate he no longer had. The third used two manual cranes with separate crews and no left-leg simulation.
"Third," he said. "After the body moves off me."
The six-armed body spit broken rail across the road. One tooth landed beside the closed freight wall.
Its gray surface carried a maker’s stamp beneath fresh blood and brace grease.
`CROSSING 4 / FOUNDRY HEAT LINE 6.`
The stamp had been cut before the tooth grew around it.
