My milf rebate system: starting with my best friends mother
Chapter 72: Fryday morning 2
Paul did not blink through the first three. At the list he smiled.
"That folder is a forgery from a disgruntled assistant and a student who has been in my wife’s house."
Charles’s voice shook and still did the job.
"I took the originals from your study on March twelfth after you showed me the bonus language. I copied the initials in front of you. You told me Andrew would handle campus noise. I am not proud. I am accurate."
Andrew started to stand. Paul put two fingers on his son’s wrist without looking, and Andrew sat like a trained thing.
Stephanie spoke next, short.
"You can call me immoral. You cannot call this list imaginary without calling one hundred and seventy sitting members imaginary with it. I am not here as a wife. I am here as the director you tried to buy out of a chair."
Eyes moved down the table. Some men found their own initials and lost the ability to look at Paul. That was the hanging. Not a gavel. A room recognizing its own price.
Paul stood anyway, because men like Paul would rather stand in a fire than sit in a loss.
"This company is not a campus romance. That boy is sleeping with my wife. He has another woman in a rented unit. He has turned a marriage into a rebate scheme I cannot even name. If you keep Stephanie, you keep a compromised chair."
The word rebate landed in Logan’s blood like the system itself had been called.
He did not speak. Counsel had told him not to speak unless asked.
A member at the far end asked anyway.
"Mr. Logan. Are you in a relationship with Mrs. Hale?"
The room waited for a lie.
Logan gave them a sentence that was not a confession and not a clean denial.
"I helped Mrs. Hale when this board was being sold around her. Anything else belongs in a private life Paul already dragged into a warehouse and a student doorway. If you want a morality play, start with the note where he writes if she falls, I buy the dip."
It was enough. It was not safe.
Alfred called the vote on operational control first, because he was smart enough to separate the chair from the marriage.
Hands.
Stephanie held the chair.
Not unanimous. Not pretty. Held.
A second vote moved Charles into protection and Paul into a formal inquiry. Andrew was barred from campus liaison work that had never been a real job so much as a toy.
Paul accepted the numbers the way a soldier accepted weather. He buttoned his coat.
"This is a delay," he said to Stephanie, only to Stephanie. "You took a boy into a vote and called it governance. I will see you at home when the cameras get bored."
"I do not have that home," Stephanie said.
Paul’s eyes flicked to Logan, then back.
"Then I will see him."
He left. Andrew followed too fast and knocked a chair. Nobody helped him pick up the sound.
After the room emptied, Stephanie’s hands started to shake in the quiet. Logan stood near enough that she could choose contact. She chose it. Two fingers against his sleeve, hidden by the table lip.
"You did not deny me," she whispered.
"I did not gift him a quote either."
"That is why I am still sitting here."
Alfred closed the last folder.
"There will be leaks in an hour. Take a company exit. Do not take the lobby."
They took the service spine.
Caroline sent a single line.
Brandon watched a live blog. He saw Paul’s speech. He saw the word woman in a rented unit. He is asking which unit. I need you to come say a sentence that does not destroy him.
Logan closed his eyes in a concrete stairwell that smelled like paint.
The board had held.
The house had not.
Brandon was at a campus table under a tree like a person trying to look untargeted. Caroline sat across from him with two drinks he was not touching.
Logan sat down and did not start with sorry. Sorry would have made it about Logan’s feelings.
"Paul used a rented unit in a public room to point at your mother without naming her," Logan said. "He wants you angry at me because angry sons do free work. I am in a relationship with Stephanie that this city is going to try to name for us. Your mother hid me, hid herself, and hid you. If you need a villain, use Paul. If you need a boundary, use me. Do not use her as the price."
Brandon stared at the drinks.
"Are you sleeping with my mother?"
Caroline did not look away from her son.
Logan had promised himself he would not pick the expensive lie and then live in it.
"Yes."
The tree moved in a small wind. Somewhere a group of students laughed at a joke that did not know this table existed.
Brandon nodded once, like a man accepting a diagnosis.
"Then you are not my friend the way you were."
"I know."
"I am not going to help Andrew. I am not going to help you either. I am going to take my mother home tonight and you are not going to follow."
Caroline’s eyes shone. She put her hand on Brandon’s wrist.
"I will come home. I will not be collected like luggage. You can hate him. You cannot write my week for me."
"Mom."
"I said what I said."
Brandon stood. The friendship that had survived a public beating did not survive a true sentence. He walked until the tree could not cover him.
Caroline watched her son’s back and then looked at Logan with a face that had both want and a bill.
"You told the truth. Good. Do not come to my house tonight. If you come, I will let you in, and if I let you in I will lose him for real."
She left in the opposite direction of Brandon, which was its own kind of war.
Logan sat under the tree until the drinks got warm.
Stephanie found him there twenty minutes later. She had taken off the navy jacket. In shirtsleeves she looked younger and more dangerous.
"I heard from Caroline," she said. "You chose the ugly honest version."
"It was the only version that did not make me Andrew."
Stephanie sat in Brandon’s empty chair.
"Paul will come tonight. Not to a board. To a body. Yours or mine. Alfred offered a plane. Two days. A quiet city. I said no because running makes the inquiry look like guilt."
"Stay visible."
