Chapter 424 - 279: Having a Pig Like You at Home Is Enough
For a good half an hour, Jiangg Yao wandered around the accessory shop, moving from one counter to another.
Chen Yuan had originally thought she would buy a lot of things. After all, he had seen just how much stuff was piled up in the sisters’ home.
There were many unopened delivery boxes in the walk-in closet, completely forgotten.
Different family backgrounds led to different views on spending. Chen Yuan would occasionally find it a bit wasteful, but Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao had the financial means to match their spending habits. Thinking about it that way, he didn’t mind anymore.
But this time, Jiangg Yao didn’t do what he had expected. She didn’t just buy whatever she saw. For many accessories that weren’t even expensive, she would try them on in front of the mirror for a long time, looking at them from every angle and taking lots of pictures, only to put them back on the shelf afterward.
This confused Chen Yuan.
In those thirty minutes, she only bought a nice-quality necklace for Chen Yuan to go with his clothes. She didn’t pick up anything else.
"You tried on so many things. Didn’t you like any of them?"
In truth, he had come prepared to carry bags big and small.
He had wanted to take this opportunity to witness the sisters’ usual spending habits.
The result was a far cry from what he had pictured.
"Some of the hair clips were okay, but the rest were just a little lacking. I didn’t feel like buying them." Jiangg Yao strolled gracefully ahead of him with her hands behind her back, her bright pink bag slung around Chen Yuan’s neck.
"I thought since you came in here so excitedly, you’d buy out the place—a dozen things here, another dozen there," Chen Yuan teased with a shrug.
"That might have been the case before."
"Why... possible before, but not now?"
Chen Yuan didn’t understand what Jiangg Yao meant, and a confused expression appeared on his face.
Walking ahead of him, she stopped. The CLICK-CLACK of her high heels on the polished floor fell silent.
She picked up a fluffy doll, twirling its twin pigtails with her fingers, and said matter-of-factly:
"Because when my sister used to bring me shopping, it was always her money we were spending. Now that I’m spending my own money, of course I have to be more frugal. Earning money is hard!"
It was hard to imagine such words actually coming from Jiangg Yao’s mouth.
If Jiangg Ning had been there, she probably would have covered her face and sighed about how Yaoyao had finally grown up and understood how hard it was to earn money. A few seconds later, she would have a sudden realization, give Yaoyao a knock on the head, and fiercely demand, "So my money isn’t money, is that it?"
Chen Yuan was a little taken aback by this.
He didn’t know about Jiangg Yao’s livestreaming.
Ever since Jiangg Yao decided to take her livestreaming career seriously, she had discovered just how difficult it was to constantly hold her fans’ interest. She no longer treated it like a game. After getting through a full stream with a serious attitude, she would look at the data on her streaming dashboard. An indescribable sense of accomplishment would well up inside her, and she would feel that every single cent was hard-earned, making her reluctant to spend it.
Spending her sister’s money, on the other hand, was no big deal. After all, Jiangg Ning was countless times richer than Yaoyao.
"You don’t have to spend yours. I’ll pay. Just buy whatever you want." Chen Yuan was surprised by her newfound maturity and started to feel bad for her.
"I’d be even more reluctant to spend your money, Young Master. You need to save your money to marry me in the future. The best solution is for us to team up and trick my sister into spending her money. What do you think?" Jiangg Yao’s eyes lit up as she made the suggestion.
"That’s... a little heartless."
"Hmph, you’re just soft on her. It’s like pulling teeth to get you to say one bad thing about her."
"I wouldn’t talk bad about you when I’m with Ningning, either. Am I wrong for treating you both equally?"
As they spoke, they reached the store’s checkout counter.
It was an unstaffed store; you just had to place your items on the counter to be scanned, pay, and then you could leave on your own.
Having bought only the one necklace, Jiangg Yao and Chen Yuan left the store and walked on.
Chen Yuan saw a place selling scoops of ice cream, with a few kids pestering their parents to buy them some. He watched with interest for a moment, then turned back, about to ask Jiangg Yao if she wanted any.
But in the blink of an eye, Jiangg Yao had run off several dozen meters and was about to enter another shop.
"Hey, wait for me," he said, striding to catch up.
"Hurry up! Are you a little turtle? You’re so slow."
"I saw something tasty and wanted to ask if you wanted some."
"We can talk about it when I come out. I’m going in!"
Jiangg Yao slipped into a storefront that looked very busy. The moment Chen Yuan walked in, he was hit by a strange smell. Looking further inside, he saw a massive pet store filled with dozens of cages of all sizes.
At the display counter up front, a Pomeranian was getting its fur blow-dried and trimmed after a bath.
The store was filled almost entirely with pretty girls and their adorable pets.
Chen Yuan scanned the store for Jiangg Yao. His gaze focused, and he spotted her figure in the deepest corner on the left, bent over.
"We don’t have a pet that needs a bath or a trim. What are we doing here?"
"To look at the kitties, of course! Look at this one, it’s so cute~" Jiangg Yao lifted her head, biting her lip lightly as she looked at him. She couldn’t stop stamping her feet, her heart melting from the cuteness.
Only then did Chen Yuan notice the Ragdoll cat in the cage, which looked like a little fairy. It had fluffy fur, sapphire-blue eyes like gemstones, a black spot on the tip of its nose, and well-developed cheeks.
It stood quietly in the cage, its tail curled around its front paws, observing the two humans in front of it just as they were observing it.
Chen Yuan didn’t dislike cats—otherwise, he wouldn’t have been feeding the strays at school. He reached out and prodded the cage. The Ragdoll wasn’t scared; on the contrary, it seemed very interested in his finger, its eyes following his every move.
"I think it likes you! It didn’t react at all when I did that."
"Hold on. Is this little speech going to lead to how we’re ’destined’ to be together, and then you’ll try to convince me to buy it?"
"...You said everything I was going to say." Jiangg Yao pouted.
"Getting a cat is a serious decision. Besides, we don’t have time to take care of one. We can’t just leave it at home to run wild by itself."
"You can make a little time to take care of it. Besides, you’ll have me."
"Now I’m starting to suspect that this was your plan all along when you said you wanted to go shopping today."
"Hee hee." Jiangg Yao’s eyes were even more nimble than the Ragdoll’s in the cage, darting back and forth. Chen Yuan knew instantly that he had guessed right.
The idea of getting a cat was indeed very appealing. Jiangg Yao’s fantasy of a happy life was marrying Chen Yuan, living a simple and blissful existence where their home was full of cats and dogs. They would go for walks with the dog after dinner and play with the cat at home.
But Chen Yuan’s refusal was swift and decisive.
"Let’s wait until we’re settled down somewhere permanent. Otherwise, it just feels irresponsible."
"Alright, then."
Jiangg Yao reluctantly tore her gaze away. She wanted to say a proper goodbye to the kitty before leaving, but Chen Yuan pulled her away from the cage, inch by inch.
This pet store was quite large. Besides the common breeds of cats and dogs, the two of them also saw many breeds they had never seen before. There was a dog with enormous ears that Chen Yuan found strangely familiar; he must have seen it in a cartoon as a kid.
The staff were very busy, so of course, no one was there to introduce the animals. Chen Yuan really wanted to ask what breed it was.
"COO COO COO~ COO COO COO~"
He turned his head for a second, and when he looked around, Jiangg Yao had vanished again.
He heard a series of strange noises coming from near his feet. Looking down, he saw Jiangg Yao squatting there, talking to some small animal and constantly poking at its cage.
Curious, he squatted down to take a look and found a small, pink pot-bellied pig in the cage. The pig was continuously nuzzling Jiangg Yao’s hand with its snout, very friendly and not at all afraid of strangers.
"Wow, it’s so soft! I really want to squeeze it," Jiangg Yao said, instantly melted by its cuteness.
"You were going ’coo coo coo’ just now. I thought you were looking at a pigeon, but it was a pig."
"Isn’t that how pigs sound?"
"Of course not. They grunt and snort. I can tell you’ve never seen a pig on a farm."
"This one is different from those. It’s a pet pig," Jiangg Yao said, gently rubbing its head with the pad of her finger. She looked at Chen Yuan expectantly. "How about we get it? It’s even cuter than the kitty."
"Forget it. Having one pig like you at home is enough."
"What did you say?" Jiangg Yao’s hand crept to his waist, threatening to pinch him.
