Chapter 444 - 292: The Long Years of Love, and the Surprising Sweetness of Three
"It’s no trouble. I’m off today."
"What about you, Chen?"
"Well, since we’re already here," Mr. Chen nodded, "we might as well leave tomorrow morning."
When Jiangg Ning heard that the two elders were willing to stay the night and go sightseeing, a gentle smile immediately blossomed on her face.
’She already saw Mr. Chen and Liu He as her future in-laws. It was a rare opportunity to spend time with them and deepen their relationship—an absolutely perfect chance.’
’After all, the status she and Jiangg Yao held in Chen Yuan’s heart would undoubtedly influence all sorts of choices down the line.’
’All that could be said was that both she and her younger sister had their own reasons why they couldn’t afford to lose.’
Of course, Chen Yuan was extremely satisfied with both sisters; he even felt blessed. It was yet another time he was reminded of the benefits of dating older women, who were so different from the girls his age at school.
’This was the charm of a mature woman.’
Jiangg Ning was tactful and poised, always knowing how to be considerate of his feelings and how to treat her elders.
He never had to worry about a thing; she had already taken care of almost every little detail.
Case in point: Chen Yuan hadn’t even thought to remind his mother to wear a sun hat later, but Jiangg Ning had already fetched her own hat and sunscreen, happily sharing them with Liu He as they chatted and laughed.
He and Mr. Chen just sat leisurely on the sofa drinking tea. With nothing for the two of them to do, they were happy to kick back and relax.
"It’s been a while since I’ve had this much downtime," Mr. Chen suddenly sighed. He sipped his tea, thoroughly enjoying the peace that came with Liu He’s attention being focused entirely on her future daughter-in-law.
After a moment, the father and son both crossed their legs in unison.
"Do you have a Chinese chess set here?"
"No, Dad, but we can use the iPad to play against each other."
"Let’s do it!"
Chen Yuan nodded and called out for Jiangg Yao to bring the iPad from her room. Then, the two of them actually started a digital match, playing with intense concentration.
...
That afternoon, with Chen Yuan playing chauffeur, Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao accompanied the two elders. They spent a wonderful time together, feeling just like a real family on an outing.
They chatted and laughed in the car, their conversation flowing endlessly.
Liu He took the lead in digging up dirt on Chen Yuan, telling many funny stories from his childhood. He was so embarrassed he kept trying to stop her, but the two sisters listened with rapt attention. They nearly cried laughing, especially at the story about how a little girl in kindergarten beat him up, drew a turtle on his face, and sent him running home in tears.
Boys were mischievous back then, and there was even more fun to be had in the remote countryside. A group of kids would get together—setting off firecrackers on the frozen lake in winter, stealing watermelons in the summer, and occasionally digging up sweet potatoes from someone’s field to roast them, often getting chased and cursed at by the old man guarding the plot.
As Jiangg Yao listened to Liu He’s stories, her eyes filled with envy. Having spent her childhood tutored by various teachers in the arts, she could hardly imagine such a joyful youth.
’If... if only she weren’t a daughter of the Jiangg Family from Mingzhu City. If only she had grown up with Chen Yuan in some remote place, as his childhood sweetheart... how wonderful would that have been...’
She couldn’t help but get lost in the fantasy.
After arriving at their destination, Chen Yuan and the group first stopped by Jiming Temple to offer incense and pray. As one of Lanjing’s most ancient temples, its Buddhist atmosphere and cultural heritage were undeniably rich. It was also springtime, and everything was coming back to life.
In the temple courtyard, cherry blossoms were in full bloom, dyeing the entire garden. The petals clustered together in a dazzling display of pink, and this was with many buds still waiting to open.
Chen Yuan took a great many photos of the two sisters and Liu He, their warm smiles immortalized in the pictures.
As evening approached and the sun began to set, the group headed to Lanjing University. They toured the library and the well-known Yingtian Building on campus. Since it was a holiday, there weren’t many students around, making the laughing, strolling group particularly conspicuous on the tree-lined avenues.
They had originally planned to visit the Lanjing Museum as well, but it was unfortunately too late—the museum was closing in half an hour. So, Chen Yuan changed their destination mid-route, deciding to head for the Confucius Temple by the Qinhuai River instead.
At night, the area was a lively spectacle, filled with rows of flower lanterns, graceful Singing Girls, and the drifting aromas of various snacks.
They had dinner there.
It wasn’t until around nine-thirty that night that they finally headed home, having set out in high spirits and returning completely satisfied.
By the time they got home, everyone looked exhausted, but the satisfied smiles on their faces spoke volumes.
...
"Well... Uncle, Auntie, we’re going to head back next door now," Jiangg Ning said to Liu He.
"You two have had a long day. Go on and get some rest."
"Dad, Mom, you two can take the master bedroom. I’m going to head next door to rest for a bit, too." Chen Yuan rose from the sofa with a faint smile and immediately fell into step behind the two sisters.
"Okay, you too, my good son—huh?! Where do you think you’re going? Get back here!" Liu He’s expression soured as she realized what he’d said mid-sentence.
