Chapter 211: Afterwards

The portal spat them out into the rocky dirt of the ravine. Nathan hit his knees hard, but he didn’t care.

The flat, grey sky of their own world was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Real, freezing air. Solid ground under his hands. He just knelt there in the dirt, taking deep breaths, letting the crushing, suffocating weight of the Pale Court finally slide off his back.

Mirko shifted out of her humanoid form, landing with a soft thud next to him as a small green bunny. Her fur was scorched black in a few spots, but she was breathing fine. Kuro sat heavily against the steep rock wall, her dark eyes closed. Shiro knelt nearby, her golden glow dim and exhausted.

Garrett fell flat on his back, staring straight up at the clouds. "We made it. We actually walked out of there."

Dillon let out a tired, broken laugh. "I can’t feel my legs at all. Is that normal?"

"Probably not," Elise managed to say. She was swaying on her feet. Her Glacial Crown was completely dark, and she was leaning all her weight on Aurora’s Heart. But she was standing.

Smithy leaned against a heavy boulder, taking deep, shaky breaths. His Void Eel coiled weakly around his boots. "The Pale Court... Nobody has ever gone in there and come back out."

Nathan forced himself up onto his feet. "Vex. Valerie. We need to check in."

The star-pin on his collar cracked with loud static. Valerie’s voice punched through, sharp and breathless. "Cross! You’re out! The TCA scanners went totally blind the second you crossed the threshold. We thought—" She stopped, taking a shaky breath. "Just get back to the guild. Right now."

The ride back to the capital was a blur.

Nathan only remembered bits and pieces—the bumpy transport ride, the heavy grey sky passing by, the bruised and dirty faces of his team. He remembered Elise holding his hand the entire way. He remembered pulling through the capital’s heavy steel gates. The city looked exactly the same as they had left it. People were just walking around, totally unaware of the nightmare they had just stopped.

The guild hall was dead quiet when they walked in. Valerie met them right at the front doors, with Boris sitting faithfully at her side. She looked pale, but she gave them a massive, relieved smile.

"You’re alive. Every single one of you," Valerie said, her voice dropping.

"We’re breathing," Nathan said, unhooking his Starfall Cloak. "The Shepherd’s Court is destroyed. We smashed the puppet and the throne. But the Shepherd himself is still out there."

Valerie nodded slowly. "I know. But you gave him a massive black eye. The TCA is already seeing a huge shift. The corrupted Worlds are settling down. The mana spikes across the board are dropping back to safe levels." She crossed her arms, looking proudly at the battered team. "You did something nobody else has ever done. You walked into the Shepherd’s own house and walked out."

Nathan looked back at his friends. "We did it together."

Later that night, after the guild healers had bandaged their cuts and everyone had eaten a hot meal, Nathan walked up the concrete stairs to the roof.

The stars were out, shining brightly over the city lights. Elise was already up there, sitting on the ledge. Her silver hair caught the starlight in the dark. Nathan walked over and sat down right beside her.

"How are you holding up?" Elise asked softly.

"Tired," Nathan admitted. "Sore. I feel like I’ve been shooting a bow for ten years straight." He let out a long breath, looking out at the city skyline. "But I also feel... hopeful. For the first time in a really long time, I actually think we can win this."

Elise was quiet for a minute. She leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder. "We will. Whatever comes next, we face it together."

Nathan reached over and took her hand. They sat there in the quiet, watching the stars. They didn’t need to say anything else.

The next morning, the system woke them up.

Nathan was sitting in the guild’s main common room with the rest of the team when the familiar blue screens popped up in the air.

Nathan stared at the last line on the screen. The map fragment was complete. Every World, every connection. The Shepherd’s entire network was finally mapped out.

He opened his inventory and pulled the physical map out. He laid it flat on the wooden table. The symbols glowed on the paper—the Ashen Expanse, the Verdant Depths, the Shattered Throne, and the Pale Court. They were all connected by glowing lines that met perfectly in the center. It pointed to a single, final World they hadn’t seen yet.

The map labeled it with one word, printed in dark, jagged letters:

ORIGIN.

"The Shepherd’s real home," Smithy said quietly, reading over Nathan’s shoulder. "The place where he started. Where he ate his very first World."

Nathan traced his finger over the dark, pulsing symbol. "That’s where we have to go next. That is where all of this finally ends."

The team looked at the map, and then at each other. Nobody said a word. They didn’t need to. They all knew exactly what was coming.

But not today.

Today, they needed to rest. Today, they needed to heal. Today, they were just going to celebrate being alive.

The final battle could wait. Just for a little while longer.
