Chapter 584: Zero Hour on the Mainland
Chapter 584: Zero Hour on the Mainland
I opened the box.
Inside was a delicate silver pendant. A snowflake design that seemed to pulse with faint blue light. Cold radiated from the metal even without touching it.
"It’s infused with my Aspect. A piece of me that you can carry." Her voice softened. "When you’re far away and surrounded by women who want to take you from me, touch it. Remember who’s waiting."
I lifted the pendant from the box. The cold bit my fingers in a familiar way. Natalia’s cold. The cold that had become synonymous with home.
"Help me put it on."
She clasped it around my neck. The snowflake settled against my chest. Cool but not unpleasant. Like her presence wrapped in metal form.
"It suits you."
"Everything suits me. I’m incredibly attractive."
"Your ego is exhausting."
"You love my ego."
"I love despite your ego." She kissed my cheek. "Now go pack. The transport leaves at six tomorrow morning."
I spent the rest of the day in a haze of preparation and goodbye.
Emi cried. Actually cried. Tears streaming down her sapphire eyes as she packed a medical kit that I definitely couldn’t fit in my bag but accepted anyway.
Skylar gave me a look that said everything without words. A slight nod. A flicker of something in her amber eyes. Then she disappeared into her room without a goodbye.
Maki refused to stay behind. She crawled into my shadow during packing and announced that she was non-negotiable cargo.
Nel confirmed that familiars could travel through shadow storage indefinitely. One less argument to have.
Isabelle found me in the common room that evening.
"The mainland will be different." She sat across from me. Her wine-red eyes carried ancient knowledge that made her seem older than eighteen. "The guilds that will be hosting us have expectations. Political agendas. They will try to recruit you. To mold you. To claim you for their own purposes."
"Sounds like a normal Tuesday."
"I am serious. You have drawn attention that cannot be undone. The top guilds will send representatives. Aegis Prime. Crimson Fang. The Ironclad Syndicate. Even Olympus Rising despite Veronica’s independent offer."
"What about the Celestial Sentinels?"
"They focus on recruitment from within their own networks. You are too chaotic for their brand." A rare smile crossed her face. "But the others will compete. Aggressively."
"Any advice?"
"Trust no one. Accept nothing without reading the full contract. And remember that every gift comes with strings attached."
"Even from friends?"
"Especially from friends." She stood. "Sleep well, Satori. Tomorrow begins a new Chapter."
She walked away.
I sat alone in the common room as the house settled into evening quiet. The fire crackled. The walls creaked. Somewhere above me, Juan snored loud enough to shake the ceiling.
Nel. Status report.
Current SP balance: 28,820. Outstanding quests: 3. Active titles: 4. Ensemble members: 3 at various bond levels. Mainland departure scheduled for 0600 tomorrow.
And the Olympian skeleton key?
Item remains in inventory. Single use. Capable of unlocking any door, including metaphysical barriers and sealed dimensions. Acquired through the Gold+ Gacha pull following the family movie night completion.
The skeleton key. I’d almost forgotten about it.
One use. Any door.
That kind of power needed to be saved for exactly the right moment. Not wasted on curiosity.
But the fact that I had it changed everything. A trump card nobody knew I was holding.
Natalia found me on the couch around midnight.
She wore that same lavender nightgown from before. Her feet were bare. Her hair loose and cascading over her shoulders.
"You’re still awake."
"Couldn’t sleep."
"Me neither." She climbed onto the couch. Settled against my side. "Tomorrow feels too soon."
"It is too soon."
"But necessary." Her hand found mine. "You need to grow. To become the monster that this world will fear. And you can’t do that while I’m holding onto you."
"You’re not holding me back."
"I know. But I could if I let myself." She turned my face toward hers. "So I’m letting you go. For two weeks. To become whatever you need to become."
"And when I come back?"
"When you come back, you’ll still be mine. And I’ll remind you exactly what that means."
Her lips found mine. Soft this time. Gentle. A goodbye wrapped in a kiss.
We fell asleep on the couch together. Her head on my chest. My arms around her waist. The pendant cold against my skin.
The transport arrived at exactly six in the morning.
A military-grade hovercraft that looked like someone had crossed a helicopter with a tank and then made it sexy. The VHC logo blazed on the side in chrome lettering.
Fifteen of us gathered on the dock. The top performers. The future of the Hunter industry.
Reyna stood near the front. Her crimson hair caught the morning light. Her broken arm had finally healed enough to remove the regeneration sleeve. She looked different without the medical equipment. Smaller somehow. More human.
Our eyes met across the crowd. She smirked. I nodded.
The dinner was still happening. That was a problem for mainland me.
Julian skulked near the back of the group. His hand remained braced. His eyes burned with enough hatred to start forest fires. He didn’t look at me. Didn’t acknowledge my existence.
Which meant he was planning something.
Cel arrived last with Noah at her shoulder. Her pale blue hair was immaculate. Her posture perfect. The picture of aristocratic composure.
"Everyone board. We depart in five minutes."
I took one last look at the island.
Natalia stood on the shore. Purple hair whipping in the wind. Arms crossed. Face carefully neutral.
But through the bond, I felt everything she was holding back. The fear. The pride. The desperate love she would never admit in public.
I touched the pendant at my chest.
She saw the gesture. Nodded once.
Then I turned and walked onto the transport.
The interior was surprisingly comfortable. Leather seats. Climate control. Holographic displays showing our flight path and destination.
I found a seat near the back. Away from Julian. Away from the political maneuvering already beginning among the other students.
Reyna dropped into the seat beside me.
"Fancy meeting you here."
