My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System
Chapter 273: THE AUTHORIZATION
The angel’s full authorization didn’t arrive as a strike.
It arrived as a state change.
The Eastern Island’s spiritual plane — which had been still since the angel landed in the northern mountains, the entire ecosystem silent like when a very large predator enters a territory — stopped being still.
And began to respond to the repressor.
Not as an ally — as conquered terrain. The Eastern Island’s spiritual plane, with its eons of history, with the Silent Threshold in the mountains and the previous cycle’s creatures and the thirty‑meter trees that had been accumulating active spiritual signature for centuries — all of it being accessed by the channel between the repressor and the Gods that was now fully open.
The Gods had built the current cycle.
The current cycle’s spiritual plane was their territory.
And through the repressor’s channel, the Gods could use that territory.
---
Kira felt it first.
Predator’s Sense reading the environment’s spiritual plane and finding that the environment no longer behaved the same way it had been behaving.
Not as a new threat. As the environment being someone else.
"The forest’s spiritual plane is responding to the angel," said Kira. Her voice carried the tension of someone describing something the reading system didn’t have a category to classify correctly. "Not as the ordinary spiritual plane — as if the forest were being directed."
"Directed how?" said Jessica.
"The vegetation’s spiritual plane, the earth’s, what’s beneath the earth — all orienting toward the angel as source. As if the forest were listening to the angel instead of existing on its own."
"What can the angel do with that?" said Alex.
"I don’t know." Kira. "I’ve never seen anything like it."
---
What the angel did with the forest’s spiritual plane was immediate.
The trunks of the four fallen trees in the clearing — the ones the angel’s maximum pulse had knocked down — began to move.
Not as living creatures. As matter being directed by something that used that matter’s spiritual plane as a control point. The thirty‑meter trunks, tons of mass, sliding across the forest floor with the efficiency of something that needed no muscle force because the spiritual plane was more fundamental than physics.
Toward the team.
Four thirty‑meter trunks as horizontal projectiles.
---
"Move," said Seraph from her knees.
The team moved.
Seraph with twenty thousand HP couldn’t move with the speed training would have allowed — her body with the fight’s accumulated damage responding slower than her mind demanded. Kira reached her before the nearest trunk covered half the distance — Predator’s Sense calculating all four trajectories simultaneously, Kira’s body finding the angle where she could take Seraph’s arm and move her without pulling in the direction of the next trunk.
The first trunk passed twenty centimeters from where Seraph had been.
Raven with F3 active — Army of Bones was no longer enough; the sixty‑four units didn’t have the mass to stop a thirty‑meter trunk. Raven used F3 to read the trunk’s spiritual plane, reading the exact speed, and moved perpendicular at the precise moment.
The trunk passed.
Maya with Akari — Akari’s nine tails creating a network that the trunk struck at five points simultaneously. It didn’t stop it. It deflected it enough for it to pass between Maya and Jessica instead of over them.
Jessica didn’t move.
Not because she couldn’t — because F6 was oriented toward the fourth trunk’s spiritual plane, Entropy applied to the contact point between the trunk’s spiritual plane and the angel’s channel directing it.
The trunk’s spiritual plane degrading at the connection point.
The trunk losing the channel’s direction two meters from Jessica.
Falling without completing its trajectory.
---
The angel meanwhile didn’t wait for the trunks to finish their work.
The Gods’ plane full authorization active — the repressor using the forest’s spiritual plane while attacking physically at the same time.
Grim in the path of the physical attack.
The angel reached Grim with the same fist that had sent Alex thirty meters at the fight’s start.
The fist reached Grim.
And Grim received the strike with the plane‑between‑life‑and‑death scythe interposed.
The meeting between the repressor’s fist and the original Harvester’s scythe — from different planes, one from the Gods’ plane and the other from the plane between life and death — produced something the team felt more than saw: a pulse from the contact point that wasn’t from the ordinary spiritual plane but from the two higher planes colliding at the same physical point.
The forest floor within a ten‑meter radius of the clash gave way — not dramatically, a thirty‑centimeter depression, as if the weight of two planes not designed to touch physically had temporarily compressed reality at that point.
Grim stepped back one meter.
The angel stepped back one meter.
Symmetrical.
---
"Did you see that?" said Emily from where she was — Purifying Light reactivated, still on the ground, healing what she could heal from that position.
"I saw it," said Alex.
"The angel stepped back."
"Yes."
"The same distance as Grim."
"Yes."
Emily processed that.
The Gods’ plane repressor and the original Harvester’s core with four Fragments — producing a symmetrical clash. Not Grim winning. Not the angel winning. Equal at that contact point.
With four Fragments amplifying the core.
"What happens with all seven?" Emily said quietly to Alex.
Alex didn’t answer.
But the question hung in the air.
---
The angel didn’t repeat the direct physical attack against Grim.
The repressor’s tactical update included the data that the symmetrical clash didn’t produce a favorable outcome — if mass and the Gods’ plane produced the same recoil as the partial Harvester’s scythe, the repressor’s raw power advantage was reduced in direct contact with that target.
Instead, the angel used the forest’s spiritual plane.
Not the trunks again — the trunks had been the first available tool. Now the channel to the Gods’ plane accessed something more fundamental: the earth itself.
The north forest’s ground, with its eons of spiritual accumulation, responding to the repressor’s channel.
The ground beneath the team’s feet changing density — not suddenly, progressively, the soil becoming more resistant to movement, like trying to walk on sand that suddenly has the resistance of concrete.
Kira read it with Predator’s Sense the moment it started.
"The ground is changing." Her voice without panic but with the specific urgency of someone who had just seen the full pattern. "The angel is using the terrain’s spiritual plane to immobilize us."
"How long before we can’t move?" said Raven.
"It depends on how many resources the channel has." Kira evaluating. "Two minutes at the current rate. Less if it accelerates."
"Can F6 degrade the channel?" said Alex.
Jessica from her position:
"I can degrade the connection point between the angel’s channel and the ground’s spiritual plane." Jessica. "But while I keep F6 on the ground, I lose progress on the wing."
"How far was the wing?"
"Fifty‑three percent. Seven points from sixty."
"How long for the wing if you abandon the ground?"
"Four additional minutes."
"And if you keep the ground?"
"The wing stops. The ground degrades more slowly than the angel builds it."
Alex processed the dilemma.
Any option the team chose was a resource that was no longer somewhere else.
---
Grim in the clearing.
The plane‑between‑life‑and‑death scythe held. The crimson flames with the original Harvester’s neutrality — which from outside the state amplified by the four Fragments the team experienced as different from usual. Grim had always been present, attentive, with the personality he had built in months of existing alongside the team.
This Grim was functional.
He hadn’t stopped being Grim — the four Fragments amplifying the core didn’t erase what the core was. But the function came first, before personality, and the original Harvester’s function was to gather what needed to be gathered with the efficiency of something that doesn’t judge whether the target deserves to be gathered.
**"Master."** His voice carried the double weight of the flames at maximum and the four Fragments. **"The angel’s channel to the Gods’ plane has an entry point on the plane between life and death."**
Alex looked at him.
"What?"
**"The Gods’ plane isn’t completely separate from the plane between life and death."** Grim. **"They have a point of overlap — the same point the original Harvester used to build the Silent Threshold from the plane between life and death toward the ordinary spiritual plane."**
"And the angel’s channel uses that point?"
**"The angel’s channel passes through that point to access the Eastern Island’s spiritual plane."**
"Can the Harvester reach that point?"
**"With four Fragments — partially."**
"And if it reaches it?"
**"The angel’s channel is interrupted."** Grim. **"Not permanently. For as long as it takes the Gods’ plane to reestablish the connection."**
"How long is that?"
**"I don’t know exactly."** Grim. **"In the previous cycle, the original Harvester reached that point once. The reestablishment time was enough for the Harvester to do what it needed to do."**
Alex looked at his hands.
The four active Fragments. The four Fragments’ energy channeling into Grim to sustain the transformation.
If Grim used that energy to reach the two planes’ overlap point—
"What happens to the transformation if you redirect the energy to the overlap point?" said Alex.
**"It collapses."** Grim. **"The transformation requires all four Fragments amplifying the core constantly. If I redirect the energy to the overlap point—"**
"You go back to eighty centimeters."
**"Yes."**
"And the angel’s channel is interrupted before you collapse?"
**"If I reach the overlap point before the transformation gives way — yes."**
Alex looked at the team.
Seraph with twenty thousand HP.
Raven with F3 sustained but her body showing its visible limit.
Jessica divided between the wing and the ground.
Emily with Purifying Light at the limit of what she could sustain.
Kira with the ground becoming more resistant beneath her feet.
Viktor in the shadows between the trees — last resource, with Hemomancy and Blood Needles, with fifty‑two years of practice and the angel’s blood that Hemomancy could use.
And Grim — who could interrupt the angel’s channel to the Gods’ plane at the cost of collapsing the transformation and returning to eighty centimeters.
"How long a window if you interrupt the channel?" said Alex.
**"The reestablishment time."** Grim. **"In the previous cycle, it was enough for what the Harvester needed."**
"The original Harvester needed time to act." Alex. "I do too."
**"For what?"**
Alex looked at his hands.
The four Fragments.
The three still missing — Raven’s F3, Jessica’s F6, Seraph’s F2 which was already in him but which Seraph had now.
The window Grim would produce if he interrupted the channel.
"For the last two," said Alex.
Grim understood.
**"If the channel is interrupted, the angel loses the Eastern Island’s spiritual plane as a resource."** Grim. **"It returns to what it had before the full authorization."**
"Seraph, Jessica, and Raven with their Fragments still active against the angel without the full authorization."
**"And me at eighty centimeters without the four Fragments amplifying."**
"And me with time to receive F3 and F6."
Grim looked at the angel.
At the active channel that was turning the north forest ground into concrete beneath the team’s feet.
**"The timing has to be exact."**
"I know."
**"Are Raven and Jessica in agreement?"**
Alex looked at Raven.
Raven forty meters away with F3 active and accumulated damage and the hand that had gone to her stomach twice during the fight without her noticing.
"Raven?" said Alex.
Raven looked at him.
"What do you need?"
"When Grim interrupts the channel — F3 to me. Immediately."
Raven processed that in two seconds.
Her look wasn’t at F3. It was at Alex.
"Agreed," said Raven.
Alex looked at Jessica.
"Jessica?"
"F6 as well." Jessica without Alex asking. "I calculated it when you gave the instruction to Raven. The sequence makes sense."
"Good." Alex to Grim. "Ready?"
**"When you are."**
Alex closed his eyes.
All four Fragments active — all the energy oriented toward Grim, toward the core, toward the transformation that sustained the plane‑between‑life‑and‑death scythe.
"Now."
---
Grim redirected.
The four Fragments’ energy that had been sustaining the transformation oriented instead toward the overlap point between the Gods’ plane and the plane between life and death — the point the original Harvester had used to build the Silent Threshold, the point the angel’s channel used to access the Eastern Island’s spiritual plane.
The transformation gave way.
The two and a half meters reduced to eighty centimeters.
The original Harvester’s scythe dissolving.
The crimson flames returning to their usual level.
And at the two planes’ overlap point — the four Fragments’ energy channeled through the core reached the angel’s channel from the only angle where the repressor had no defense.
The angel’s channel to the Gods’ plane was interrupted.
---
The forest floor returned to normal density.
The four trunks the channel had been preparing for the next move stopped.
The Eastern Island’s spiritual plane released — stopping its response to the repressor, returning to the ancient ecosystem state that was its own.
The angel looked at its hands.
The connection to the Gods’ plane that had been fully open — interrupted. Not permanently closed. Interrupted. The repressor felt the reestablishment time starting.
Reestablishment time.
The angel looked at Alex.
And understood what Alex was going to do in that time.
It moved toward Alex.
Seraph arrived first.
With twenty thousand HP, with the arm holding the scythe at its limit, Seraph put herself between the angel and Alex with the same posture she had put herself between the angel and Raven in the fight’s first minute.
"No," said Seraph.
The angel struck her.
[Seraph HP: 21,300 → 0]
Seraph fell.
And she didn’t get up.
---
Raven reached Alex.
F3 — the Harvester’s Hand with its crimson eyes and double‑bladed scythe — oriented toward the transfer channel Alex had open since Grim had interrupted the angel’s channel.
F3’s transfer began.
Jessica from the flank — F6 oriented toward Alex as well, Entropy without the Fragment’s full mode because F6’s transfer required the Fragment to yield its active state in Jessica.
The angel reached Alex before both transfers finished.
