Chapter 107: Chapter 107: I’m Not Reframing the Truth Just to Feel Cleaner

The system stirred at the edge of my vision, cold and unhelpful.

[Primary anchor emotional volatility elevated.]

[Favorability trajectory: At risk.]

[Recommendation: Full disclosure without justification stacking.]

I ignored it.

"I’m not replacing you," I said.

"I’m not asking you to like her. I’m not going to pretend those kisses were only healing and pure technique, either. Some of them were. The one in that recording wasn’t only that. I pulled her in. That’s on me. I still meant what I said on the call. I still want the version of the next three years that has you in it. I handled the order of the truth wrong."

Gianna stared at me for a long moment.

Then she locked the phone and slipped it into her jacket.

"I’m not going to perform a collapse for you," she said.

"I’m also not going to smile and say thank you for being honest after the evidence arrived first. You want dual registration? You want to stop living in sealed boxes? Then you don’t get to be surprised when I take the same honesty and use it to decide what I’m willing to stand beside."

She walked past me toward the door.

"...Gia."

"I’m leaving before I say something only meant to hurt you."

Her hand reached for the latch.

I moved first.

The distance was closed in two steps, and my palm met the door above her shoulder, shutting it again with a dull, final sound.

We ended up too close, her back near the frame, my chest almost against hers, the new height from the overnight reconstruction making her have to tip her head if she wanted to meet my eyes.

She didn’t.

"Move," Gianna said.

"Be angry. That’s fair. It isn’t even new."

My voice came out lower than I expected.

"But look at me."

She kept her gaze on the line of my collarbone.

"Look. at. me."

Something in the way it landed, sharper, closer to the edge of the integrated voice without being the old foreign pressure, made her lashes lift.

Red eyes found mine.

Up close, I could see how tight she was holding herself, the discipline it took not to turn the whole thing into a performance of rage.

"I chose you first," I said.

"I wanted you first. I was with you first. I regret that night constantly, not because we stopped in the middle, and not only because of what my body did. I regret it because I didn’t get to have you fully. Because the version of that night I wanted was one where I stayed present and finished what we started with you still looking at me like I was mine to trust. I want you beside me. Not as a line on a registration form. As the person I don’t know how to do the next three years without."

My eyes were fixed on hers.

"If you hate seeing me with her, then be there. Train. Take the space. Don’t leave it empty and then only receive the proof when someone else weaponizes it."

"You don’t understand, Revien."

"No. I don’t. Not the full shape of what this feels like on your side."

My forearm stayed against the door, not trapping her by force so much as refusing the easy exit.

"It’s a shitty feeling to know I made this worse. I’m not going to blame my body, or the class, or the week, or the exam schedule. You asked for honesty. Here it is. I kissed her. More than once. Some of it was stupid training games. The one in that video wasn’t only that. I pulled her in. That is mine. There weren’t lingering confessions afterward. No quiet promises. Will something like feeling grow there later if I keep standing in that room? Maybe. I’m not going to insult you by swearing a future I can’t guarantee."

Gianna’s jaw worked once.

The height difference held. She hated having to look up. I could see it.

She did it anyway.

"But you are still first in the only way I know how to mean it," I said.

"This is not a race where she closes a gap, and you get erased. I’m not going to stand here and demand you perform certain things to keep your place. Be with me. You liked what we had. I liked it. I want to continue past that point. Not by pretending the video doesn’t exist. By not letting Rei be the one who writes the timeline of what you know."

For a moment the only sound in the apartment was both of us breathing too carefully.

Then Gianna’s voice came, quieter, and for the first time since the phone had lit the recording, it carried the real hurt instead of the controlled edge.

"You keep saying first like it is a shield."

Her eyes didn’t leave mine.

"First doesn’t change the picture of you kissing her in the same building where I have been trying to make my hands steady enough not to break my own week. First doesn’t change that she is the one who already forced her mouth onto you when you were in crisis, the one who talks about taking you out of this guild, the one my mother warned was a poaching risk. You want me to stand beside that. You want me to believe that ’maybe’ something will grow with her is an honest sentence and not the start of watching myself be managed into sharing you with someone who treats people like usable growth curves."

I opened my mouth.

The old defenses rose automatically: training, structure of the world, dual registration practicality, the system’s network pressure.

I shut them down.

"You’re right," I said.

Gianna’s eyes flickered, as if she had braced for another explanation and hadn’t received it.

"You’re right about the order," I continued.

"You’re right that she was a particularly cruel person to practice any of this with while you were taking distance. You’re right that ’I was going to tell you’ is a weak sentence after a video arrives first. I’m not going to stand here and reframe that into something less ugly just so I can feel cleaner while I say it. I hurt you."

Silence stretched.

"The way you found out made it worse. That is true at the same time as the other true things: that I still want you, that I still mean the call, that I still do not know how to fit what I am into a single neat loyalty without lying to someone. Holding all of that at once does not erase the part where I failed the timing and the choice of partner for that failure."
