My Taming System Makes Me Overpowered

Chapter 221: Celestial lockdown

The morning air outside the timber lodge was crisp and invigorating, carrying the cool, resinous scent of elder-pines that drifted in soft, swirling currents through the clearing as the party prepared to leave Sylvan-Hollow. Pale shafts of early light filtered between the tall trunks, gilding the dew-beaded grass and the rough-hewn planks of the lodge itself, while distant bird calls echoed faintly through the canopy.

As Vetra adjusted the straps of her leather chest piece, the supple material creaking softly under her practiced fingers, she paused, flexing her hand into a tight fist. The leather, darkened by years of travel and battle, hugged her form with familiar weight, yet something felt different. She looked down at her palm with a quiet, puzzled expression, studying the faint silver veins that traced across her skin like living filigree. There was no sudden surge of explosive aura, no dramatic flare of dragon-fire—just a profound, strange sensation of lightness that seemed to radiate from the marrow of her bones outward. The usual lingering soreness in her muscles after a hard battle was completely absent, replaced by a deep, steady warmth that felt as natural as breathing, a quiet vitality that made every joint feel fluid and every tendon sing with restrained power.

Beside her, Elena adjusted her spectacles—restored under the illusion layer—and smoothed out her robes with careful, deliberate motions. The fine fabric whispered against itself as she straightened the folds, the subtle embroidery along the hems catching the morning light in muted glints. She took a slow breath, the cool air filling her lungs, noticing that her internal mana flow felt unnaturally smooth. The slight friction she usually felt when drawing upon her core had vanished entirely, leaving a serene, glass-like calm behind her sternum, as though a crystal-clear spring had replaced the once-turbulent currents within her.

"Is something wrong?" Vince asked, slinging his travel pack over his shoulder. The leather straps settled against his frame with a soft thud, and the faint scent of travel dust and old parchment rose from the worn satchel as it came to rest.

"No... not wrong," Elena murmured, looking at her slender fingers before meeting his eyes with a warm, soft blush that colored her cheeks like the first touch of dawn. "Just... remarkably clear. I feel as though my mana pathways were completely cleansed overnight."

"Same here," Vetra grunted, giving a quick, confident stretch that sent a subtle ripple across her silver-veined shoulders. The motion caused the leather of her armor to shift and settle anew, the faint metallic sheen of her veins catching the light as muscles flexed and relaxed with effortless strength. She stepped up to Vince’s side, her amber eyes shining with quiet, fierce devotion that seemed to burn steadily beneath the surface. "Whatever you did... I feel like I could run twenty miles without taking a single heavy breath."

Vince gave them a knowing, subtle nod, the corner of his mouth lifting ever so slightly as he kept the true extent of their core evolution to himself for now. "They’ll figure it out soon enough," he thought, the private certainty settling warm and heavy in his chest.

Oh, just wait until they throw their first strike, Barnaby chimed in, floating lazily upside down above Vince’s left shoulder, her ethereal form drifting with the ease of a leaf on still water as she twirled a strand of her luminous hair around one delicate finger. They’re in for a very pleasant surprise, Vince. Her voice carried the usual dry amusement, yet a faint undercurrent of anticipation colored the words.

With a swift flick of his wrist, Vince refreshed the Mirage Matrix. A soft, almost imperceptible shimmer passed over the group like a veil of mist, and the subtle Sylph disguises settled back over their features—elongated, silver-veined ears tapering elegantly, altered eye hues that muted their true intensity, and carefully suppressed dragon and human signatures—ensuring they looked like ordinary high-tier travellers. The illusion settled seamlessly, the air around them briefly tasting of ozone and distant rain before the magic fully integrated.

After bidding farewell to the village elders, whose weathered faces and quiet blessings lingered in the memory of the moment, the party turned away from Sylvan-Hollow and crossed the final eastern ridge marking the edge of the Uncharted Lands. The path underfoot shifted from soft forest loam to harder, stone-strewn ground, and the canopy began to thin, allowing broader views of the sky beyond.

The transition was immediate and stark.

The dense, bioluminescent forest, with its soft glow of living light and the constant murmur of hidden streams, gave way to a sweeping expanse of jagged, grey-stone highlands—the borderlands of the Outer Realm Provinces. The sky here was no longer bleached white by the Executioner, but a heavy, overcast iron-grey that pressed low over the ridges like a vast, unyielding lid. High above the cloud cover, faint, rhythmic pulses of crimson light rippled across the horizon at regular intervals, each flare brief yet deliberate, casting momentary washes of blood-red color against the underside of the clouds before fading once more into the gloom.

Elena pulled out her crystal slate, the translucent surface cool and smooth against her palm as she tapped it to bring up a glowing topographical map of the province. Soft azure lines and shifting elevations bloomed across the slate, illuminating her focused expression. Her brow furrowed as she observed the erratic sky pulses, the light from the map casting faint blue reflections across her spectacles.

"Vince, look at the atmospheric pressure readings," Elena pointed out, holding the slate so he could see the cascading data and the tight cluster of energy signatures near the northeastern edge. "The upper realm ley-lines are locking down. The ambient mana in the air is being funneled toward a single, massive focal point thirty miles northeast."

"Seems there’s something out there," Vince said smoothly, his gaze following the direction of the crimson pulses that continued their measured, ominous rhythm across the distant sky.

"Precisely," Elena nodded, the map’s glow flickering slightly as another pulse rolled across the horizon. "It’s probably an ancient celestial structure anchored to the province’s primary mana vein. Having said that, in theory, it should operate at a passive cycle, but right now... it’s pulling energy at maximum capacity. It’s almost as if..."

"As if they’re fortifying it," Vetra finished, her hand resting naturally on the hilt of her dagger. The metal of the weapon felt cool and solid beneath her fingers, a familiar anchor. Her sharp senses picked up a faint, metallic static floating on the mountain wind, a sharp, almost electric tang that prickled against the skin and carried the distant taste of storm-charged stone. "Vince... look down at the valley road."

Vince narrowed his eyes, looking over the edge of the ridge. The drop fell away in a steep, rocky descent, the valley floor below etched with a narrow pass that wound between sheer grey cliffs.

Spanning the narrow mountain pass leading into the Outer Province was a massive, newly erected barricade made of floating, dark iron monoliths. The monoliths hovered in precise formation, their surfaces matte and light-absorbing, etched with angular runes that pulsed with a dull, restrained power. Dozens of tall figures clad in heavy, seamless silver plate armor stood guard at the checkpoint, their forms imposing and unnaturally still. The armor reflected the overcast light in cold, hard glints, and each warrior held a long halberd that hummed with oppressive, golden law-runes, the weapons’ edges glowing faintly as if restraining vast stores of judgment-bound force.

The local merchants and provincial travellers trapped at the border were forced to kneel on the cold stone as glowing golden arrays scanned their very souls one by one. The arrays shimmered like living lattices of pure order, their light crawling across skin and clothing with invasive thoroughness, leaving faint trails of residual luminescence in the air. The atmosphere around the checkpoint felt thick and heavy, charged with the weight of absolute authority.

The Iron Inquisitors, Barnaby whispered, her deadpan tone sharpening into a cold glare that seemed to drop the temperature around her floating form by several degrees. The enforcement arm of the Sovereign of Order. They’ve placed the entire province under a total celestial lockdown. Her ethereal hair drifted more slowly now, as though even the ambient air had grown denser under the presence of that distant power.

Vince looked down at the silver-armored barricade, a cold, amused smirk touching his lips as the wind whipped his dark coat around his ankles in sharp, snapping folds. The fabric cracked like a banner in the highland gusts, carrying with it the scents of stone, iron, and distant rain. Far below, the golden arrays continued their methodical work, and the crimson pulses in the sky kept their relentless rhythm, each one a silent reminder of the power gathering thirty miles away.

"Looks like our moment of peace just ended," Vince said softly, the words nearly lost beneath the wind yet clear enough for those who stood closest to him. "Are you ready, girls."
