My Tavern in the Cultivation Wasteland
Chapter 41: Roadside Hub
Lin Yuan waited until the next morning before checking the Territory Core again.
Not because he had forgotten.
Wandering Cloud Tavern simply hadn’t given him much time.
The caravan from yesterday left before sunrise. Two smaller groups arrived not long after, one heading west and another returning east.
By breakfast, half the tables were occupied.
Outside, Master Zhou’s workers had already started on the roof of the new inn.
The building finally looked less like a construction site and more like somewhere people might sleep.
Almost.
One side still had scaffolding covering most of it.
Lin Yuan carried a pot back into the kitchen.
"Two bowls of noodles," Su Mei said.
"And steamed buns," Xiao Lan added.
"Which table?"
"Five."
Lin Yuan started preparing them.
He didn’t go upstairs until the morning crowd thinned.
The Territory Core appeared.
Territory Core
Owner: Lin Yuan
Territory: Blackstone Wasteland
Core State: Awakened
Core Level: 3
Spiritual Environment: Faint
Territory Revenue: 517 / 2,000 Low-Grade Spirit Stones
Lin Yuan paused at the last line.
Seventeen already.
Yesterday’s caravan had continued doing business after the Core advanced, and this morning had been busy.
He moved on.
Territory Development Function
The same description appeared.
Allows development effects that apply to compatible areas or functions of the territory rather than a single structure.
Lin Yuan focused.
Nothing else appeared.
He frowned.
Yesterday, the Core had said available developments depended on Blackstone’s conditions, structures, and activity.
Apparently reaching Level Three wasn’t enough by itself.
Lin Yuan dismissed the interface.
Sitting upstairs staring at it wasn’t going to change anything.
He went outside.
Blackstone wasn’t large.
Not yet.
Wandering Cloud Tavern remained the center of it.
The courtyard and stable sat nearby. Across the road stood Qiao’s General Goods, while Duan He’s Beast Materials occupied a plot farther east.
The unfinished inn rose beyond them.
Then there was the road itself.
Lin Yuan walked slowly along it.
Recent traffic had changed the ground.
Wagon wheels had pressed tracks into the dirt. Dust gathered along the edges, while several places remained uneven from the recent rain.
Near Qiao’s shop, three spirit beasts were tied to a wooden post while their owners bought supplies.
Farther down, two hunters sat outside Duan He’s shop sorting through a storage bag.
A merchant had stopped his wagon beside the inn construction site.
Too close.
One of Master Zhou’s workers shouted down from the scaffolding.
"Move that!"
The merchant looked up.
"I’m only here for a moment!"
"Your wagon is blocking the timber!"
The merchant looked behind him.
There wasn’t an obvious place to put it.
He pulled the wagon forward and stopped beside the road.
Master Zhou came around the building.
"Not there either."
"Then where?"
Master Zhou pointed toward a patch of open ground.
The merchant stared at it.
"That’s not a road."
"You have wheels."
The merchant muttered something and moved.
Lin Yuan stopped nearby.
Master Zhou noticed him.
"Your customers are getting in my way."
"He’s Qiao’s customer."
"He’s on your land."
Lin Yuan considered that.
"Then he’s our problem."
Master Zhou grunted.
"At least you admit it."
He returned to work.
Lin Yuan continued walking.
A few months ago, none of this would have mattered.
There had been one tavern and more empty land than he knew what to do with.
Now wagons stopped wherever there was space.
Spirit beasts were tied outside shops.
Travelers gathered near the warning board.
Hunters unloaded goods beside the road.
And another building would soon add twelve rooms.
There was plenty of land.
People simply used whichever part was convenient.
Qiao was arranging sacks near the entrance of his shop.
"Busy?" Lin Yuan asked.
Qiao didn’t look up.
"If you’re asking whether I have time to help in your tavern, no."
"I’m not."
"Then slightly less busy."
Lin Yuan looked toward the three spirit beasts tied nearby.
"Do customers usually leave them there?"
Qiao followed his gaze.
"Where else?"
"The stable."
"They’re buying something for five minutes. Nobody wants to pay stable fees for that."
Fair.
One of the beasts pulled against its rope and nearly knocked over a basket.
Qiao caught it with his foot.
He looked at Lin Yuan.
"A proper hitching area wouldn’t hurt."
"For wagons too?"
"Especially wagons."
Lin Yuan glanced toward the road.
That matched what he’d just seen.
Qiao tied the sack closed.
"Blackstone was easier when there was nothing here."
"It was also poor."
"That too."
Lin Yuan left him to work.
He didn’t need to ask everyone in Blackstone what they thought.
The problem was already visible.
Near Duan He’s shop, two carts were parked at awkward angles.
One blocked half the space between the shop and the road.
A hunter was unloading bundles while Duan He stood beside him.
"Not there."
The hunter stopped.
"Where?"
Duan He pointed behind the shop.
"Anywhere that doesn’t stop my next customer from reaching the counter."
The hunter looked at the pile he’d already unloaded.
Then at Duan He.
Duan He pointed again.
The hunter sighed and started moving it.
Lin Yuan kept walking.
By the time he reached the inn, Master Zhou’s workers were lifting another roof beam.
Twelve new rooms would solve the shortage of lodging.
They would also bring more people.
More wagons.
More mounts.
More goods.
Lin Yuan looked back.
For the first time, the buildings no longer seemed isolated.
Activity stretched along the road from the tavern to Qiao’s shop, then farther toward Duan He’s business and the unfinished inn.
Something stirred in his awareness.
Lin Yuan stopped.
The Territory Core.
He focused.
Territory Condition Recognized
Another line appeared.
Increasing concentration of travel, trade, lodging, and permanent structures detected.
Then:
Territory Development Available
Lin Yuan’s attention sharpened.
So that was how it worked.
Blackstone itself had to meet the conditions first.
He opened the new option.
Roadside Hub
Compatible Area: Central Blackstone
Development Requirements: Met
Activation Cost: 50 Low-Grade Spirit Stones
Effects:
Establishes Central Blackstone as a recognized development zone.
Minor Road Maintenance — Frequently traveled paths within the development zone gradually resist ordinary wear, mud, and dust accumulation.
Future compatible Territory Developments may affect the entire recognized zone.
Lin Yuan read it again.
This was different from enhancing a single structure.
The Core was recognizing an entire part of Blackstone.
Lin Yuan focused on Compatible Area.
His awareness shifted.
A faint boundary formed in his mind.
Wandering Cloud Tavern and its courtyard.
Qiao’s shop.
Duan He’s business.
The unfinished inn plot.
The road and open land connecting them.
The boundary ended beyond the active cluster of buildings.
It was recognizing the part of Blackstone that had actually developed.
Lin Yuan returned his attention to the cost.
Fifty low-grade spirit stones.
Not cheap.
But manageable.
The road alone had already started showing the effects of heavier traffic.
And if Blackstone continued growing, having the Core recognize its central area as one development zone would become more useful.
Lin Yuan considered it for a few breaths.
Then confirmed.
50 Low-Grade Spirit Stones Consumed
The Core responded.
A faint pulse spread beneath his feet.
Lin Yuan felt it move outward.
Toward the tavern.
Across the road.
Past Qiao’s shop.
Farther toward Duan He’s business and the unfinished inn.
It stopped at the edge of the boundary he had sensed moments earlier.
The ground didn’t glow.
No buildings changed.
The wagon beside Qiao’s shop remained exactly where its owner had left it.
Then the panel updated.
Territory Development Established
Central Blackstone — Roadside Hub
Minor Road Maintenance Active
Lin Yuan dismissed the interface.
He looked down.
The dirt road still looked like a dirt road.
One deep wagon rut remained directly in front of him.
He waited.
Nothing happened.
Lin Yuan nudged the edge of the rut with his boot.
"Gradually."
Of course.
"Boss!"
Xiao Lan’s voice carried from the tavern.
Lin Yuan turned.
She stood in the doorway.
"We have customers."
"I’m coming."
"And Table Three wants more tea."
He started back.
As he crossed the road, a wagon passed him.
Its wheels rolled through one of the softer patches left by the rain.
The ground compressed beneath the weight, but not as deeply as before.
Lin Yuan glanced back once.
Small.
But real.
He continued toward the tavern.
Blackstone still needed proper places for wagons.
It still needed hitching posts.
The new inn still needed a roof.
Lin Yuan looked once at the road beneath his feet.
For the first time, the Territory Core had recognized more than a building.
It had recognized Blackstone itself.
