Chapter 22: Stalking Shadows

The loud, chaotic clatter of chairs scraping against the linoleum signified the end of the afternoon lectures, but the heavy tension in Row 4 had barely receded. Stella began sliding her notebooks into her sleek leather messenger bag, her movements slow, deliberate, and elegant, while Chloe continued to radiate a silent, white-hot possessive energy from Leo's left side.

"I have to head back to the humanities annex for my journalism extra classes, Leo," Chloe pouted sweetly, her voice instantly dropping into a soft, intensely infatuated hum as she turned away from the new transfer student. She leaned her entire hourglass figure into his space, standing on her tiptoes to press a deep, lingering kiss directly onto his cheek. Her unblinking crimson eyes melted with absolute, raw devotion. "I'm so sad that I can't spend more time with you tonight. I feel like those filthy campus girls are just waiting for me to leave your side. Promise me you'll go straight home, okay?"

"I'll see you tomorrow morning, Chloe," Leo murmured smoothly, his deepened, model-tier masculine voice causing a bright pink flush to dust her cheeks as she finally spun on her heel and marched down the amphitheater steps.

Gideon and Soren stood near the row exit, their hands shoved deep into their pockets as they stared at Leo with a mixture of utter exhaustion and defeat. The sheer envy that had consumed them these days had finally burned itself out, replaced by a strange, bewildered acceptance of their friend's absolute alpha baseline.

"You know what? I give up," Gideon muttered, letting out a long, dramatic sigh as they walked out toward the main university courtyard. "I’ve spent the last forty-eight hours trying to calculate the statistical probability of a quiet freshman locking down the hottest, most unapproachable girl in our entire year, and my brain is fried. I can't get it, man. It makes zero sense."

"He's running a literal reality patch, bro," Soren chimed in, offering Leo a tired but genuine wave as they reached the edge of the campus grounds. "We're heading out to the transit lines. See you tomorrow, celebrity. Try not to cause a full-scale riot in the lecture hall before class starts."

Leo offered his friends a relaxed, highly confident smirk, watching them blend into the crowd of dispersing students before turning his head toward the off-campus boulevard. The afternoon sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the concrete metropolis in deep amber and violet hues. As Leo rounded the corner past the university's outer brick wall, that same icy, familiar prickle of awareness hit the back of his neck. His newly upgraded Level 4 physical attributes and heightened sensory perception backend metrics instantly kicked into overdrive.

Someone was following him. It felt exactly like the intense, suffocating focus of the hidden figure that had tracked his rapid athletic stride through the alleyways at dawn.

Leo stopped sharply on the concrete pavement, spinning around with casual, fluid grace to scan the street behind him. The sidewalk was empty, save for a few distant pedestrians and the long, stretching shadows of the modern buildings. There was no one there.

Narrowing his dark-grey eyes, Leo turned back around and continued walking down the main pathway, his steps deliberate and steady. But the second he moved ahead, the angle of the corridor shifted. Slipping out from behind a heavy concrete pillar fifty yards back was Stella. The foreign transfer student was actively stalking him, her long blonde hair caught in the wind as her sharp, predatory gaze tracked his broad shoulders. The moment Leo had stopped, her reflexes had kicked in, allowing her to duck swiftly into the narrow entrance of a small brick alley way just before his eyes could lock onto her position.

Standing in the dim shadows of the brick corridor, Stella pressed her back against the wall, letting out a long, ragged sigh of relief as her heart hammered against her ribs. Her revealing, sleeveless white crop top rose and fell rapidly with her heavy breathing. "That was entirely too close," she whispered to herself, her exotic accent tight with sudden panic.

She took a grounding breath, waiting five seconds before stepping back out to the edge of the alley way to see where he had gone. She scanned the long pedestrian sidewalk, but Leo had completely vanished from the pathway.

Stella’s jaw tightened in absolute shock. Her eyes widened, a wave of raw confusion fracturing her confident demeanor. Where did he go? she thought frantically, her boots clicking against the pavement as she broke into a sudden, rapid run ahead to find him before she lost his track entirely.

She ran past the opening of a secondary, pitch-black alley way, and the world completely inverted.

Before Stella could even register the motion, a large, heavy masculine hand shot out from the dark, wrapped firmly around her slender wrist, and pulled her entire body straight into the deep shadows of the brick corridor. She didn't even have time to let out a sharp cry of terror before Leo’s other hand slammed securely over her mouth, muffling her voice into a breathless, ragged gasp.

Leo utilized his commanding 6'1" frame and athletic strength to pin her rigid structure directly against the brick wall, his chest compressing firmly into her heavy, full breasts. Her tight white crop top strained against his chest, her bare midriff pressed into his jeans, and the scent of her exotic perfume completely flooded his level-4 senses.

"Why are you following me, Stella?" Leo demanded in a low, authoritative whisper right beside her ear, his deep masculine voice vibrating with a dangerous, icy edge. His dark eyes locked onto her face with an unyielding glare. "What exactly do you want from me? Speak."

Stella's body was completely captured in his powerful masculine embrace, her long legs trapped against his as she squirmed beneath his firm grip. She stared up at his sharp model-tier jawline, her eyes wide with a mix of intense arousal, shyness, and frantic frustration. She wanted to speak, her lips moving against his palm, but she couldn't break his hold.

Realizing she couldn't overpower his level-4 attributes, Stella’s gaze narrowed with a flash of stubborn defiance. Moving with sudden speed, she leaned her head forward and bit down hard on the skin of his palm.

"Tsk," Leo grunted, his grip instinctively flinching back for a fraction of a second from the sudden sting.

Stella didn't waste the opening. She twisted her wrist free, scrambled out of his reach, and backed up to the sun-drenched edge of the alley way, her hands frantically straightening her low-rise denim mini-skirt as her cheeks burned with a deep, furious blush.

"I wasn't stalking you!" Stella gasped out defensively, her rich foreign accent dripping with a mix of embarrassment and rapid annoyance as she glared at him. "You... you conceited jerk! I just... I saw you in class today, and I thought you looked incredibly handsome. I wanted to talk to you, but I couldn't muster up the courage to just approach you on campus! That's why I was walking behind you! I was trying to find a normal moment to say hello!"

Leo kept his composure ice-cold, stepping closer to the light while crossing his arms over his chest. He didn't believe her for a single second. "An attractive story, Stella. But if you're just a nervous student, why were you tracking my apartment block at the dawn this morning? That was you, wasn't it?"

Stella frozen for a split second, then offered him a look of genuine, flawless confusion, her long blonde hair tossing as she shook her head. "What are you talking about? I have never seen you before in my life until I walked into Lecture Hall 102 this afternoon! I arrived in this city via the international transit lines late last night!" Before Leo could push her further, she aggressively stepped forward, her heels clicking as she defiantly extended her slender hand toward his chest. "I am Stella. I am a transfer sophomore majoring in architectural design. It is nice to meet you, Leo."

Leo stared down at her outstretched palm, his upgraded intelligence processing the data. He heavily doubted her story, her flawless timing, and her convenient excuse, but he knew pushing a public scene right outside the gates would trigger the system flags.

"Likewise, Stella," Leo said smoothly, his deep voice dropping to a relaxed rumble as he briefly shook her hand, letting his passive Charm aura give her a brief wave of physical tension before he turned on his heel and walked away into the evening light.

Stella stood at the entrance of the alleyway, watching his tall athletic frame disappear around the distant corner. The second he was out of sight, her defensive, flustered civilian facade evaporated completely. Her expression turned entirely calculating and cold. She reached into her denim skirt pocket, pulled out a sleek, encrypted smartphone, and answered a vibrating incoming call line.

"I found him," Stella said quietly into the receiver, her exotic voice entirely devoid of any student-like shyness as she stared at the empty street. "I will collect all the information as I can."

.....

An hour later, the cool darkness of the night had fully settled over the metropolis.

Inside his dim studio apartment, Leo lay flat on his twin mattress, his hands cradled behind his head as he stared up at the shadows dancing across the ceiling. His mind was in complete disarray, his level-4 intellect constantly looping through the data. Stella... he thought, his eyes narrowing. Her story was way too clean. She's definitely hiding something. But what is she actually after?

As the mystery deepened, a sudden, heavy wave of concern fractured his focus. He realized he hadn't seen Cynthia a single time all day. She hadn't sent a text, she hadn't cornered him in the hall, and she had completely vanished from her usual student council pillar.

Leo rolled over, pulled out his phone, and dialed her number.

Ring... Ring... Ring...

"The subscriber you are trying to reach is currently unavailable," the automated operator voice clipped out through the speaker before cutting the line to static.

Leo frowned, a cold knot of intuitive anxiety tightening in his stomach. He closed his phone, tossed it onto the mattress, and slowly closed his eyes, forcing his maxed stamina to lull his exhausted mind into a heavy sleep, completely unaware of the structural shift happening across the city.

Meanwhile, miles away from the quiet studio apartment, inside a subterranean, high-tech laboratory chamber illuminated by pulsing neon-blue system code lines, a massive glass jar stood anchored to the concrete floor.

The cylindrical capsule was filled to the brim with a thick, glowing green amniotic fluid strip. Floating silently in the center of the dense matrix liquid was Cynthia. She was without clothes, her elite, elegant hourglass figure suspended weightlessly inside the fluid, her exceptionally long jet-black hair billowing around her bare waist like dark ink clouds. A heavy, professional oxygen mask was securely strapped over her face, the mechanical valves hissing softly as they pumped synchronized gas lines into her lungs.

Slowly, her long dark eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks, her striking amber eyes cracking open slightly through the green haze of the glass tank as the lab monitors thrummed with raw, terrifying energy.
