Chapter 1001: [1001] : The Spirit World
...
"I never thought they were actually real," Alice said, looking at the gathered spirits with an expression she wasn’t quite managing to keep neutral. "Celestial Spirits. I grew up hearing about them as mythology."
Shin glanced at her. He’d had the opposite assumption—that spirits of any kind were simply known quantities in this world. Apparently not.
"That’s why Celestial Spirit mages have been losing ground," Alice continued, working through it as she spoke. "If Lucy holds contracts with all of them, then there’s nothing left for anyone else to summon. Every guild in the country has been wondering why their Spirit mages stopped working." She looked at her sister. "It was you. This whole time, it was you."
She said it without accusation. More like someone placing the last piece of a puzzle on the table and stepping back to look at the picture.
"The Diamond Palace spirits alone," she added quietly. "Those are supposed to be beyond anyone. I’ve never heard of a mage who could even make contact with one."
The king had gone very still beside her.
"Lucy," he said.
Just the name. The way he said it carried everything he couldn’t put into a sentence.
"Your mother gave you that key."
Lucy looked at him and said nothing. But she didn’t look away either.
Shin filed his own question away and turned to the king.
"Where do Celestial Spirits actually come from? They’re clearly not the same as regular spirits, but everything about them feels like it comes from the same root."
The king collected himself and nodded.
"The first Spirit King—not the current one, but the first, at the very beginning—created them. Spirits are the souls of nature. Living things, the earth, the wind, the seasons. Celestial Spirits are the souls of stars." He paused. "Same origin, different expression. They’ve existed longer than most civilizations."
That landed cleanly. Shin understood it immediately—which also meant he understood why Lucy carrying all of them at once was not a small thing.
He was about to say something when a familiar figure stepped forward from the assembled spirits, and the word he’d been forming died before it reached his mouth.
The Lion. Tall, composed, with the particular kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly what you’re worth.
"I’m going to be upfront," Leo said, studying Shin with calm, unhurried eyes. "I have no idea who you are. But you clearly know me, which is interesting."
"It’s a long story," Shin said.
"I don’t doubt it." Leo looked around at the group, then back at Shin. "As for why we’re here—our king has been watching this situation for some time. He reached a point where he couldn’t keep sitting on his hands." A beat. "The Star Spirit King is the Spirit King’s younger brother. Lucy is his grandniece. Watching family struggle without acting—he’s not built for that."
He said it simply, as though it explained everything. It did.
"So here we are," Leo finished, with a slight spread of his hands.
Lucy had gone quiet somewhere in the middle of that explanation. Now she was standing very still, looking at one of the other spirits—a figure she had clearly recognized, with an expression that made it obvious she’d been holding something back for a long time and had just run out of the ability to hold it.
"Aquarius," she said.
Her voice came out thin.
"I thought I made you up," she said. "I thought—I used to talk to you, when I was little, and everyone said I was talking to myself. I believed them eventually." She exhaled, a short, unsteady sound. "You’re real."
She crossed the distance between them and held on, and she cried in the particular way people cry when something they had quietly given up on turns out to be true after all.
The room gave her the space to do it.
When she finally pulled back, her face was a mess and she looked more like herself than she had since Shin had met her.
The king watched his daughter, and whatever he’d been about to say, he let it go.
After a while, Lucy collected herself, pulled a quiet breath, and began returning her spirits one by one. For the journey ahead, moving with a full assembly would be more hindrance than help.
By the time the last one had returned to their gate, the room was quiet again, and the sky outside the narrow window had turned deep blue.
The king stood and faced Shin.
"I’ve said harder things to harder people," he said. "But right now I can’t think of the right words, so I’ll just say what’s true." He glanced at his daughters, then back. "They’re the only things in this world that matter to me. Whatever I’ve done wrong—and I’ve done plenty—they’re the one thing I got right."
He looked at Shin squarely.
"Bring them home."
Then, without any particular ceremony, he bowed.
His ministers followed.
Shin watched an aging king fold at the waist toward him and felt something move in his chest that he didn’t entirely have language for.
He gave a single, slow nod.
"As long as I’m breathing, nothing touches them. You have my word."
The king straightened.
"Son-in-law," he said, and somehow made it sound like the most natural thing he’d ever said.
Shin opened his mouth, closed it again, and decided that was a battle for another day.
He turned toward the door, and for the first time in a long while, he had a clear picture of where he was going—not just tonight, not just into the spirit realm, but beyond it. Resolve the fracture between the spirit race, the gods, and the dragons. Find out what the Creator God actually set in motion. Unify what was left.
And then, once this world had its footing back, he would stand at the top of it.
The Fairy Tail world would have a king.
He walked out without looking back, and the dream walked with him.
