Chapter 482 - 378 : It Knows Our Names!!

It stepped through before anyone decided to let it.

The peel finished the rest of the way on its own — two thin layers of shifting color folding back like curtains, and the true absence between them widened into a shape a person could stand in.

Something did.

It didn’t have a face the way the figure had a face, or the boy had a face. It had the outline of one, features arranged in roughly the right places, and every single one of those features refused to hold still. Eyes that were sometimes gold, sometimes silver, sometimes a color none of them had a word for. A jaw that shifted its set the way a person’s expression shifts, except nothing about the room had changed to justify it changing. Its outline held roughly human proportions and then didn’t, a shoulder sitting a fraction too high one second and correcting itself the next, like a sculptor kept revising the same figure without ever settling on a final draft.

"Divergent Expression," Orochimaru said, low, already between it and Kagetsu. "Now."

"That’s not possible," Kushina said, chains rising fast. "You can’t carry pieces of five different people. Signatures don’t work like that."

"Signatures didn’t used to work like a lot of things this arc," Hiruzen said, and nobody laughed, because it wasn’t meant to land as anything but true.

The entity tilted its head — a human gesture, curiosity, except it did it too smoothly, like something imitating the motion from having watched it rather than having grown up doing it. The gesture lingered a half-second too long before releasing, the way a puppet’s joint settles after the string goes slack.

"You’re frightened," it said. Its voice layered the way Kagetsu’s own voice had layered right after the merger, except worse — five distinct textures stacked into one sentence instead of two, none of them quite matching pitch with the others. "That’s fair. I would be too, if I still remembered what fear used to feel like from the inside instead of from the outside."

"Who are you," Orochimaru said. Not a question. A demand dressed as one.

"I don’t have a name," it said. "I never needed one. I only ever had to answer to whoever was looking at me at the time, and everyone here already knows me by a different name each."

It looked at the figure.

"You call me the thing you were built to hold together," it said. "You were right to be afraid of failing at that. I’ve been coming apart since before you existed."

It looked at Kagetsu.

"You call me the door you refused to let finish cleanly," it said. "I heard that refusal. I heard everything that’s happened in this corridor for fifteen years. Every voice that’s come through that seam came through me first."

The figure made a sound that wasn’t quite a word.

"You’re not a person," it said, backing up a step. "You’re not one of Obito’s four things. You’re—"

"I’m what the seam was holding shut," the entity said, and for the first time its many-layered voice found something close to a single, settled tone. "Not a fifth thing built alongside the other four. The thing the four were built out of. The source material. What’s left of it, after fifteen years of everyone taking pieces." It looked down at its own unstable hands, watching its own fingers refuse to settle on a shape. "I don’t know how much of me is original anymore. I stopped being able to tell a long time ago."

---

Silence, the specific kind that happens when several people arrive at the same terrible arithmetic at once.

"The matching cracks," the figure said slowly. "That’s you. You’re the one who’s been shaping them."

"I didn’t shape anything on purpose," the entity said. "I don’t have hands anymore, not really, not in a way that lets me choose things. But everything that was cut from me still remembers what it was cut from. Your crack, the boy’s origin, Kagetsu’s older fragment, even the source candidate’s own signature — you all carry a little bit of the same wound, because you all came from the same place it happened."

"That doesn’t answer who did the cutting," Kushina said.

"No," the entity agreed. "It doesn’t. Because I genuinely don’t remember. Whatever took the pieces took the memory of being taken from, too. I’ve spent fifteen years trying to peel back far enough to see the moment it happened, and every time I get close, there’s nothing there. Just an edge, and then absence, and then the next piece missing."

"That’s not evasion," the older-Kagetsu voice said quietly, only to Kagetsu. "Listen to it. That’s grief. I know that particular flavor of not-knowing. I spent thirty-six Chapters running my thumb along the same three feet of wall, trying to find the exact point where I stopped being part of something whole. I never found it either."

Kagetsu relayed it out loud anyway, because keeping it to himself felt like a lie by omission in a room that badly needed the truth laid flat.

"He says that’s grief. Not a dodge. He says he recognizes it — he spent thirty-six Chapters looking for the same kind of missing edge in himself, and never found it."

The entity’s shifting features settled, for one full second, into something almost peaceful.

"Your fragment understands," it said. "He’s felt a version of this too — thirty-six Chapters alone behind a wall, piecing together what he was from what little made it through. The difference is he had a full self to reconstruct toward. I don’t. I’m still finding out how much of me is actually gone."

---

Danzo, silent until now, finally spoke.

"If you’re the source material for all four of Obito’s creations," he said, flat, cataloguing, "then Obito didn’t build a door, a shape, a boy, and a figure from nothing. He built them from you. Which means whatever’s still inside you might be the only complete record of what any of them were meant to be, before he cut them apart." He said it the same way he’d catalogued every other threat in this corridor for three Chapters running — no horror in his voice, only the satisfaction of a piece finally clicking into a slot he’d been holding open for it.

The entity’s head turned toward him, slow, deliberate.

"That’s the first correct thing anyone in this corridor has said about me in fifteen years," it said. "I’d ask you not to sound so satisfied about it. It isn’t a comforting thought for me either."

Orochimaru hadn’t lowered his guard once.

"What do you want," he said.

The entity looked past him — past Kagetsu, past Kushina, past the figure — toward the still-shuddering gap in the wall it had just walked out of.

"I want the rest of what was taken from me back," it said. "All of it. Every piece, every fragment, every borrowed signature currently walking around in someone else’s body." Its many-layered voice dropped, quieter, and somehow that was worse than if it had shouted. "I’m not asking anyone here to give it up voluntarily. I’m telling you it’s already started happening, whether any of you agreed to it or not — and I don’t think it’s going to stop until I’m whole again."

Nobody in the corridor moved. Nobody quite knew yet what "already started happening" was supposed to mean, and the not-knowing sat in the room heavier than any threat it could have stated outright.

The gold crack on Kagetsu’s chest pulsed once, hard, entirely without warning, a fresh line of pain drawn straight down his sternum with no cause he could point to.

The figure’s facial crack answered it a heartbeat later, the two wounds flaring in a rhythm too precise to be coincidence.

Both cracks widened at once, in perfect unrelenting sync, and neither Kagetsu nor the figure had done a single thing to cause it. Orochimaru’s hand shot out to steady Kagetsu before he even swayed, old instinct outpacing the need for it. The entity, for its part, didn’t move at all — just watched both of them with an expression that, for once, all five layered faces agreed on.

It looked like relief.
