Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 488 - 384 : The Fourth Voice!!
The mark had been quiet for so long Kagetsu had almost let himself believe it was gone.
It wasn’t gone.
It came awake the way a held breath finally releases — not gradually, not gently, but all at once, ash-red light bleeding up from his wrist through skin that hadn’t carried an active seal since the activation arc that started all of this, three hundred and eighty-four Chapters and one entire second lifetime ago.
Orochimaru felt it before he saw it — a change in the temperature of Kagetsu’s skin under his hands, warmth instead of the clammy cold that had been building since the collapse. "Something just changed," he said, low, urgent. "Not worse. Different."
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Signature source: Kagetsu’s arm mark (dormant since Ch. 336, now ACTIVE)
Current internal signature count: FOUR, simultaneous
1. Nara Kagetsu (base) — 41%
2. Third fragment (departing) — 19%, falling
3. Uzuki / nineteenth construct (arriving) — 23%, rising
4. Mark-signature (newly active) — 17%, rising
FLAG: Four distinct signatures occupying one physical host simultaneously. No historical precedent. System confidence: zero.
"Four," Kushina said, staring at the read, voice gone flat with disbelief. "There were three fighting for space a second ago. Now there’s four."
"The mark isn’t fighting for space," the older-Kagetsu voice said inside Kagetsu, and for the first time all Chapter it didn’t sound afraid. It sounded like it had finally recognized something. "It’s not a fifth guest crowding into the room. It’s the room itself, waking up to notice how crowded it’s gotten."
Kushina crouched lower, chains gone entirely still at her sides now — nothing left in this fight her chains could touch. "Then what does the room do once it’s awake."
Nobody answered her immediately. The ash-red light kept climbing Kagetsu’s arm, slow and certain, like it had all the time in the world despite everything happening around it insisting otherwise.
*
The ash-red light didn’t fight the third fragment’s departure or Uzuki’s arrival.
It moved between them instead — threading itself into the space where the two signatures crossed, the exact point in Kagetsu’s chest where something was leaving and something else was arriving through the same narrow channel at the same time.
"It’s not choosing a side," Hiruzen said, kneeling close enough to see the light move, close enough that his own hand hovered an inch above where it pulsed. "It’s positioning itself between them."
"Like a doorframe," Danzo said. "Holding the shape of the doorway so two different things can pass through without the whole structure collapsing."
The newcomer had gone very still, watching this with an expression that had shifted, over the course of one Chapter, from composed authority to something closer to a student watching a problem solve itself in a way it had never anticipated.
"That’s not something I built," it said. "That’s not something anyone built. That mark predates everything I know about. It’s not part of Obito’s four constructs, not part of the seam, not part of anything I was cut from."
"It’s mine," Kagetsu said, and this time the voice was entirely his own — no borrowed cadence, no older-Kagetsu inflection, no half-formed stranger speaking through his mouth. Just him. "It’s always been mine. I just never understood what it actually was."
Orochimaru’s grip on him didn’t loosen, but something in his posture changed — less bracing for a loss now, more simply holding steady while someone else did the work of surviving. "Then use it," he said. "Whatever it is. However it works. Use it."
*
The overlapping visions steadied further.
Uzuki’s outline — half a face, unfinished hands — stood directly across from him now, close enough that Kagetsu could see the exact place where its features simply stopped being decided, like a sculpture someone had walked away from mid-stroke and never come back to finish.
[Talk to it,] the older-Kagetsu voice said. [Not the newcomer. Not me. It. It’s the only one in this whole corridor who actually knows what it’s like to be unfinished and conscious of it at the same time.]
"You don’t have to take what isn’t offered," Kagetsu said, out loud, directly to the shape in front of him. His voice shook. He let it. "I know you’ve been waiting. I know it’s not fair that you’ve been waiting. But taking my third fragment’s place isn’t going to finish you. It’s going to make you into something wearing an unfinished shape over a stolen one, and I don’t think that’s actually what you want."
He kept going before Uzuki could answer, before anyone in the corridor could interrupt. "I don’t know what you remember about being abandoned mid-formation. I don’t know if it hurt the way this is hurting me right now. But I know what it’s like to almost lose the parts of yourself that make you the person you are, and I’m not going to pretend it’s fine for that to happen to you just because it would be convenient for me."
Uzuki’s outline flickered.
For the first time, it responded — not with words, not yet, but with something that felt, through the mark’s newly-active channel, unmistakably like hesitation.
"He’s listening," the figure said, gold light flaring bright with relief. "Kagetsu, whatever you’re doing, it’s working."
Kushina let out a breath she’d clearly been holding since the fourth signature appeared. "Keep talking to it. Whatever you’re saying, it’s the first thing all Chapter that’s actually slowed something down instead of speeding it up."
Kagetsu didn’t answer her. He didn’t have the attention left to spare. Every part of him that wasn’t holding the conversation with Uzuki was busy simply staying upright.
*
The third fragment’s voice returned, weaker than before but present, riding the same channel the mark had opened.
"Don’t stop him from arriving," it said. "That’s not what I need either. I don’t need him to stay unfinished so I can leave clean. I need — " it faltered, the falling percentage cutting into its coherence, "I need somewhere that isn’t a person. I told you I’ve been quiet for sixteen years to keep you whole. Let me finish that. Don’t spend Uzuki to save me."
"Then where," Orochimaru said, sharp, refusing to let the moment slide toward another loss disguised as a solution. "Where does a fragment go if not into a person and not back into the seam."
Hiruzen’s hand hadn’t moved from its hover near Kagetsu’s chest, watching the ash-red light thread itself tighter around the crossing point of the two departing and arriving signatures. "Kagetsu. Whatever the mark’s showing you right now — if it’s showing you anything — say it out loud. We can’t see what you’re seeing."
"It’s not showing me a place," Kagetsu said, strained, eyes fixed on something none of them could follow. "It’s showing me that there already is one. It’s just never been used for this."
The mark’s ash-red light pulsed once, hard, in answer — not a word, not a notification, just a direction, the way a compass needle finds north without explaining why.
It pulsed toward Kagetsu’s own scar. The one from Chapter 298. The one that had outlasted every version of him across every arc since.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
New correlation candidate identified: Ch. 298 scar tissue.
Correlation to third fragment signature: 61% and climbing.
FLAG: This scar has never previously registered as anything beyond cosmetic/incidental. This is the first time it has produced an active signature match to anything.
"That’s not possible," the newcomer said, and for the third time this Chapter its composure broke completely. "That scar isn’t part of the mark. It isn’t part of the seam. It isn’t part of anything I know how to explain."
"Then explain what you can," Minato said, voice hard, "because whatever’s happening, it’s happening right now, and Kagetsu doesn’t have time for you to catch up."
Danzo, watching the correlation figure climb in real time, spoke before the newcomer could answer. "A scar that’s outlasted every prior arc of his life. A scar that predates the mark, predates the merger, predates every fragment we’ve catalogued tonight. If it’s producing a signature match now, for the first time, that’s not coincidence. That’s something that’s been waiting for the right condition to finally register."
"Waiting for what condition," Kushina asked.
"For every other option to run out," Danzo said. "Which is exactly where we are."
The scar split open.
Not bleeding — opening, the way the seam itself had opened three hundred and eighty-two Chapters ago, revealing something that had apparently been waiting inside Kagetsu’s own body far longer than any of them had thought to look.
