Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 495 - 391 : Whatever Answers Back!!
The hand didn’t pull away.
It pressed flatter instead, fingers spreading against the far side of the flat white light like something testing the give of a wall it already knew wouldn’t move.
The light dimmed with every degree of pressure, thinning at the point of contact until the corridor could almost see through it — almost, not quite, the way frost on glass thins without ever fully clearing.
"Nobody breathe," Orochimaru said, kunai already up, already between the light and Kagetsu without anyone seeing him move there. "Nobody so much as flinch."
The white dimmed another degree.
Not going out. Yielding.

"It’s not registering," Minato said, low. "Not zero-match. It’s failing to register at all."
Danzo’s eyes hadn’t left the hand.
"There’s a difference."
"There’s a difference," Minato agreed. "I don’t like what it implies."
—
The newcomer had gone very quiet.
Not composed-quiet, the way it had held itself through eleven straight Chapters of catastrophe. Quiet the way a person goes quiet when the floor they’d been standing on turns out to have another floor underneath it.
"Say something," Kushina told it. Not unkind. Urgent.
"I don’t know what’s on the other side of that," the newcomer said. "I told you that already. I meant it as reassurance. It wasn’t."
"Then unmean it," Orochimaru said. "Tell us what you’re afraid of instead."
The newcomer’s hands, always still, weren’t still now.
"I’ve been on this side of the seam my entire existence," it said. "Every unfinished thing I’ve ever known has come from the seam itself, or through it, from Obito’s four constructs, or from the third fragment, or from her—" a glance toward Kagetsu’s chest, toward the glow’s quiet, spent pulse, "—all of it inside. Nothing has ever knocked from outside the outside. There isn’t supposed to be an outside the outside."
Nobody answered that right away. It wasn’t the kind of statement that had an answer — it was the kind that just sat in the room until everyone had finished absorbing the shape of it.
Danzo was the one who finally spoke. "You’ve spent this entire arc as the furthest thing back any of us could trace to. The origin of origins."
"I thought I was," the newcomer said. "I was wrong before, twice. I don’t like being wrong a third time in front of something I can’t even read."
—
The hand pressed harder.
The white light thinned around it — not tearing, not cracking the way the seam itself had peeled in Ch. 377. Wearing down. The way skin goes pale under sustained pressure before it finally gives.
Kagetsu felt the third fragment stir at five percent, unmoved in status but no longer silent.
"I know that pressure," it said, quiet, almost to itself. "That’s not force. That’s patience. Whoever that is has been pushing like that for a long time."
"How long?" Hiruzen asked.
"Longer than I’ve been hiding. Which is sixteen years and however many more before that I don’t have a number for."
—
Kushina’s chains rose to full extension, gold light running their length without her calling it — the same reflex from Ch. 390, held now instead of released.
"If it’s been pushing that long," she said, "why is it only breaking through now?"
The second signature answered before the newcomer could.
"Because the glow just answered something for the first time," it said. "I don’t think it was listening for a sound. I think it’s been listening for a specific one. And she just made it."
Uzuki’s signature, steady at forty-six since Ch. 389, flickered upward — forty-seven, forty-eight, climbing without the panic of its Ch. 387 spike, more like a held breath finally exhaling.
"She wasn’t calling to me," Uzuki said. "I thought — I’ve thought since Ch. 388 that I finally understood what I was oriented toward. I didn’t. She was never just talking to me. She was talking through me. Both of us were the message. Neither of us was the audience."
—
The pressed hand’s fingers curled, slow, deliberate — testing the seam’s give the way someone tests ice before committing their weight to it.
Then the white light split.
Not violently. Not the way the seam had cracked open in Ch. 366 or peeled apart in Ch. 377. It parted the way a curtain parts — controlled, from one exact point, widening only as far as the hand pushing through required and no further.
An arm followed the hand. Pale, unmarked, unhurried.
Then a second arm.
Orochimaru’s kunai found a throat that wasn’t there yet — aimed at where a throat would be if whatever this was had a throat, if it had a body built the way bodies were built on this side of the light.
"Stop," the figure said — not fear, not this time. Something closer to recognition trying and failing to complete itself. "I know that shape. I don’t know how I know that shape."
—
The light parted fully.
What stepped through was neither tall like the newcomer nor built like Kagetsu or the older Kagetsu or the source candidate. Smaller. Slighter. A face that hadn’t finished deciding what it wanted to look like — features shifting by degrees, the way water settles after something’s dropped into it, before finally holding still.
When it held still, it looked like no one in the corridor.
And it looked, faintly, unmistakably, like all of them at once.

—
"That’s not a composite," Danzo said, staring at the numbers. "A composite means pieces of things that already exist. That’s—"
"A ledger," Hiruzen finished quietly. "It’s carrying a fraction of everyone in this corridor. Everyone we’ve met since Ch. 325."
The figure had gone very still.
"Not a fraction," it said. "A receipt."
Kushina’s chains hummed, gold light climbing their length without her willing it there. "For what?"
"I don’t know yet," the figure said. "I only know what a receipt feels like, standing this close to one. It means something was already paid. We’re just finding out the price after the fact."
—
The newcomer took an involuntary step back — the first retreat it had made all arc.
"I don’t know it," it said, and for the first time its voice cracked open with something that wasn’t composure at all. "I have never known it. And it is the first thing in this entire corridor that carries a piece of me."
The figure it had just described turned its unfinished face toward the group, toward Kagetsu, toward the softly pulsing glow still settled quietly inside him.
It opened its mouth.
No sound came out — not yet, not the layered chord the glow had managed in Ch. 390, not words, not even the wordless cadence that had built toward them. Just the shape of an attempt, over and over, like something trying to remember a language it had once known fluently and had been apart from for longer than anyone in the room could measure.
Then it stopped trying to speak entirely.
And instead, it reached toward Kagetsu’s chest — toward the glow — with the same slow, patient certainty the hand had shown pressing through the seam.
"Don’t," the second signature said, sharp, the first command it had ever given anyone in Corridor Seven. "She isn’t ready for contact. Nobody said she was ready for contact."
The figure kept reaching anyway — not fast, not forceful, just utterly, immovably certain that it had every right to.
Uzuki moved first, closing the distance between the glow and the reaching hand before anyone else could react — the same protective instinct it had carried since Ch. 389, sharpened now into something closer to a wall than a gesture.
"You don’t get to decide that just by wanting to," Uzuki said, and its voice, for the first time since it had spoken at all, carried no trace of patience left in it. "I waited longer than you have existed. I know what waiting costs. This isn’t that."
The unfinished face didn’t stop reaching.
It only turned, slow, deliberate, to look directly at Uzuki — and for the first time since it had stepped through the light, something in its shifting features held still long enough to be called an expression.
It looked like recognition.
"Say something," Kushina said again, louder this time, to anyone, to all of them. "Anyone. Before it touches her."
Nobody had anything to say.
Orochimaru’s kunai stayed leveled at a throat that still hadn’t fully decided to exist, his arm steady despite having nothing solid left to threaten. Minato’s own blade came up beside it, the two of them forming the same wall they’d held since Ch. 370 — except this time neither of them knew what, exactly, they were supposed to be holding it against.
