Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 501 - 397 : The One Who Answers!!
"Continue" sat in the corridor like a held breath nobody had agreed to hold.
The thinned place in the wall-seal hadn’t widened.
It hadn’t closed either.
Corridor Seven waited around it in the specific quiet that had settled over the last two Chapters — not the tense hush of imminent violence, something closer to a room holding its own nerve steady on purpose.
---
Danzo broke the silence first, because someone always had to.
"We don’t know what answering costs," he said. "We don’t know what silence costs either. Both are decisions. We should at least choose on purpose."
"Since when do you wait for permission to have an opinion," Orochimaru said, not quite a joke.
"Since the last several opinions I’ve had this arc turned out to be wrong," Danzo said. "I’m adjusting."
---
Hiruzen studied the thinned light the way he used to study a battlefield before committing anyone to it.
"If it wanted to attack, it’s had every opportunity," he said. "It knocked. It waited. It said one word and stopped. That’s not the pattern of something that needs our permission to hurt us."
"Then what is it the pattern of," Kushina asked.
"Courtesy," Hiruzen said. "The same kind we’ve been extending Kagetsu all night. I don’t like admitting something on the other side of that seam might be capable of it. But I don’t see another explanation that fits everything we’ve seen it do."
---
I could answer, the glow said, quiet, still speaking from beside rather than through anyone. I think I’m the one it’s actually listening for.
I also think that’s exactly why I shouldn’t be the one who does it first.
The second signature’s voice followed immediately, careful as ever, but with an edge underneath the care that hadn’t been there in earlier Chapters.
I’ll go instead, it said. I’ve had longer to get ready for a conversation like this than she has. Seventy-one percent of me was built for exactly this kind of waiting.
"No," Kagetsu said.
He said it out loud, to both of them, before either could argue back.

"It’s talking to whoever answers first," Kagetsu said. "Not whoever’s had the most practice. Not whoever’s least afraid. I’ve let every piece of myself take turns being the one who has to carry the hard part tonight. I’m not doing that again for this."
Orochimaru’s hand tightened on his shoulder — not to hold him back this time.
To brace him.
"If you’re doing this," Orochimaru said, "you’re doing it standing, and you’re doing it with me exactly where I already am."
---
Kagetsu stepped toward the seam.
Not far. Corridor Seven didn’t give him far to go before the wall itself started, and the group had learned a long time ago not to let distance from the threshold become distance from each other.
He stopped an arm’s length from the thinned point, close enough to feel it — not heat, not cold, something closer to pressure behind the eyes, the specific discomfort of being looked at by something that had never needed a face to do it.
"You said continue," he said. "So say what you actually want. Plainly. I’m done guessing at half a sentence."
---
The thinned point held for three full seconds.
Long enough that Kushina’s chains crept up again, unbidden, old habit outracing her judgment for the second time this arc.
Long enough that Uzuki’s signature pulled tight and protective, angling itself, without instruction, between the seam and the glow inside Kagetsu’s chest.
Then the voice answered — the same unified, layered chord from Ch. 393, but quieter now, almost gentle, in a way that felt worse than volume would have.
"You already know what I want. I said it before. Everything borrowed, returned by the time she decides what she is."
"I said ’continue’ because she’s still deciding. I wanted to see if she’d let someone else finish the sentence for her."
Minato’s arms uncrossed slowly, his voice low when he finally spoke. "That’s a test," he said. "It’s not an ultimatum anymore. It’s an evaluation."
"Both, probably," Hiruzen said. "The best ones usually are."
---
The glow went very still inside Kagetsu’s chest.
I didn’t, she said — not to the voice, to Kagetsu, private and sharp with something that might have been relief. Nobody finished it for me. You told them no.
That’s data too. I don’t think it knew you’d do that.
Kagetsu felt something in his own chest loosen, fractionally, at hearing her sound almost pleased about it — the first thing all night that had felt like an actual small victory rather than a delayed cost.
"Don’t get used to it," he said, quiet enough that only she’d hear. "I still don’t know what I just agreed to."
Neither do I, she admitted. But I’d rather not know it with you than know it without you.
---
The second signature spoke into the pause, careful, testing the shape of a theory before committing to it out loud.
It’s not just measuring her, it said. It’s measuring what the people around her do when given the chance to decide for her. Every deadline it’s set has been phrased around what she becomes. Maybe part of what she becomes depends on who gets to answer for her, and who doesn’t.
Danzo’s jaw tightened.
"Then refusing to let anyone else answer wasn’t sentiment," he said, looking at Kagetsu with something almost like respect. "It was strategy. Whether you meant it that way or not."
"I meant it because it was true," Kagetsu said. "The strategy’s a bonus."
---
The voice spoke again, and this time something in its cadence had changed — not colder, not warmer, just closer, the way a person’s voice changes when they stop addressing a room and start addressing one person in it.
"Good answer," it said. "Better than most of the others who’ve stood where you’re standing."
Kagetsu felt his stomach drop before his mind caught up to why.
"Others," he repeated.
"You didn’t think you were the first person to be counted, forgot, and counted again under a different number," the voice said. "Did you."
The words landed harder than anything the corridor had thrown at Kagetsu all night — no heat behind them, no threat, just the flat certainty of something stating a fact it had never needed to argue for.
Kushina’s hand found his arm. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t need to; the grip said it for her, the same grip she’d used on the figure a hundred Chapters ago, the one that meant I’m not going anywhere either.
---
The thinned point in the wall-seal widened for the first time — not violently, not fast, a slow parting like something finally exhaling after holding still too long.
Behind it, faint and half-formed, something new resolved into view. Not the newcomer. Not Black Zetsu. Not any silhouette the group had catalogued across three hundred and ninety-six Chapters of careful, hard-won recognition.
A shape, small, indistinct at the edges, standing exactly where a person would stand if they’d been waiting a very long time to be let back in.

[Divergent Expression — Emergency Read]
Source: unidentified, beyond seam threshold
Correlation: 4% match — Kagetsu (base signature)
Correlation: 3% match — the second signature
Correlation: 2% match — the glow
Confidence: rising
Flag: composite partial match spans three of Kagetsu’s own internal components simultaneously. No precedent for a fourth-party signature reading this way. Classification pending.
---
Danzo read the numbers off Divergent Expression’s live feed and said nothing for a long moment — the kind of silence that meant he understood exactly what he was looking at and didn’t like a single implication of it.
Kushina’s chains stayed raised, but she didn’t call the retreat this time.
Nobody did.
The half-formed shape took one step forward, through the widened seam, close enough now that its outline caught the flat white light and held it like something remembering, for the first time in longer than anyone in the corridor had been alive, what it felt like to be seen.
It didn’t speak.
It didn’t need to.
Its face — still indistinct everywhere except the eyes — turned directly toward Kagetsu’s chest, toward the glow, toward the second signature, toward all three at once in a way no single gaze should have been able to manage.
Orochimaru moved without waiting for a signal, placing himself fully between the shape and Kagetsu — not aggressive, not yet, just present, the way he’d been present at every threshold this arc had thrown at them.
The shape didn’t react to him at all.
It kept looking past him, through him, at the three things sharing space inside Kagetsu’s chest, with an expression that had no business reading that patient after however long it had spent waiting on the wrong side of a door that never opened.
And it smiled.
