Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 508 - 404 : Not Him Either!!
The entity turned fully toward the crack, its fractured attention no longer on Kagetsu at all.
The shift was immediate and total — one moment it had been standing close enough that Kagetsu could feel the pressure of its grief like heat off a low fire, and the next it had pulled all of that attention away, focused entirely on the widening threshold behind it. Whatever it had sensed, it hadn’t been subtle about the sensing.
"Something’s coming through the same channel I used," it said, urgency bleeding through the broken cadence of its voice. "I didn’t open a second path. I don’t have the strength left to open a second path. This isn’t mine."
"Then whose is it," Danzo said, weapon already leveled at the crack itself.
"I don’t know."
Kushina’s chains snapped fully taut. "That’s not an acceptable answer right now."
She said it without malice, but with the flat, focused edge she reserved for moments when patience had stopped being useful. Kagetsu had heard that tone directed at Obito, at the shape, at Danzo more than once over the past hundred Chapters. It always meant the same thing: someone needed to start being more helpful, immediately.
"It’s the only true one I have," the entity said, and for the first time since it crossed through, something like fear entered its fractured voice — not the frightened stillness Fragment A carried, but something older, wearier, a fear that had learned long ago how to keep functioning anyway. "I’ve spent longer than this corridor has existed learning every signature that moves through this threshold. This one isn’t in that list. That has never happened before. Not once."
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
World: Naruto/Bleach Fusion — Colony-Linked Signature Analysis
Quality: Epic
Effect: Real-time correlation and origin-tracing of chakra/reiatsu signatures across known and unknown sources.
READ REQUESTED — EXTERNAL, EMERGING
Signature detected: forming in real time, not yet stable. Correlation impossible to calculate — subject signature changes on each read cycle.
Correlation to ultimatum-voice: fluctuating, 0-40%. Correlation to crossed entity (Fragment A’s counterpart): fluctuating, 0-15%. Correlation to Fragment A: 0%. Correlation to Fragment B: 0%.
Advisory: this is not a known entity attempting to conceal itself. This is a signature that does not yet have a fixed identity to detect. First confirmed instance of an active read target still in the process of becoming something, rather than being something imperfectly read.
Kagetsu felt the floor tilt again, harder this time. "It’s not hiding from us," he said slowly, parsing the notification even as it kept shifting under his eyes. "It’s not finished yet. It’s still deciding what it’s going to be."
He’d read a lot of impossible things off this same Talent Card over the past hundred Chapters. None of them had ever refused to sit still on the page while he was reading them.
"That should not be possible here," the entity said. "Not in this threshold. Not this close to the seam. Everything that crosses this point arrives already whole, already itself — the four, the seventeen, the nineteenth, even the two of you—" it gestured, or did whatever its gestureless body did that Kagetsu’s mind translated as gesturing, toward Fragment A and Fragment B, still huddled together inside him. "—arrived as what you already were. Nothing has ever crossed here still becoming."
Hiruzen’s voice cut through, steady despite everything. "Then either the rules have changed, or something is choosing to break them on purpose."
"Or something’s forcing an exception," Orochimaru said, kunai never wavering from the crack. "The kind of exception that requires effort most things wouldn’t spend unless they had to."
He’d said something almost identical about the shape back in Ch. 398, Kagetsu remembered — nothing gentle survives being forced into existence this fast. It hadn’t been wrong then either.
The half-formed signature pulsed once, visible now even without Divergent Expression’s assistance — a shimmer of pale non-color light gathering at the crack’s edge, thickening, thinning, thickening again, like something trying on several shapes before settling on none of them.
"I need you to listen to me carefully," the entity said, turning back to Kagetsu with an urgency that hadn’t been there even during its apology. "Whatever finishes forming in that light did not exist an hour ago. Something built it. Fast. On purpose. In direct response to me crossing through."
"Built it as what," Kushina said. "A weapon? A guard? A message?"
"I don’t know yet. But I know why." The entity’s fractured voice dropped lower, quieter, carrying a weight that made even Danzo go still. "Someone doesn’t want this conversation to keep happening. Someone decided the fastest way to stop it was to put something between us that didn’t exist before tonight — something with no history for any of you to read, no precedent for your Talent Card to compare against, nothing familiar enough to trust or distrust on sight."Inside Kagetsu, Fragment A’s stillness broke again — not toward retreat this time, but toward something closer to alertness, a focus he hadn’t felt from her since before the split. Fragment B moved with her, the two signatures orienting together toward the forming light with a unity that hadn’t existed between them until this exact moment.
It was strange, feeling the two of them align like that. Every prior interaction between Fragment A and Fragment B had carried some trace of the tension between them — fear on one side, patience on the other. This had none of it. Whatever was forming at the crack’s edge mattered more to both of them, together, than whatever separated them from each other.
"They’re both watching it," Kagetsu said out loud. "Both fragments. At the same time. Like they recognize what it’s for, even if they don’t recognize what it is."
The glow’s voice arrived through his throat, thin and careful. "That’s not recognition of the shape. That’s recognition of the tactic."
"Meaning what," Danzo said.
"Meaning this isn’t the first time someone’s tried to interrupt something by building a stranger to stand in the doorway," the glow said. "Fragment A and Fragment B have seen this before. A long time before tonight."
It was the most the glow had said all Chapter, and something about the specificity of it — a long time before tonight, not vague metaphor, not careful evasion — landed harder than anything else she’d offered since Ch. 396. Kagetsu felt Kushina’s hand tighten against his chest in response, the same instinctive reaction she’d had every time the arc handed them a fact too large to process mid-crisis.
The half-formed light finished thickening at the crack’s edge, and for one suspended second, everyone in the corridor held perfectly still — the entity, the group, even the wall-seal itself seeming to pause around the shape now resolving into something with height, something with a suggestion of limbs, something that hadn’t been anything at all sixty seconds ago and was, with each passing heartbeat, becoming undeniably real.
Kushina’s chains had gone rigid, no longer coiled in readiness but locked fully taut, a held breath translated into taut steel. Danzo hadn’t moved his stance in over a minute. Even Orochimaru, who Kagetsu had never once seen genuinely startled, wore an expression that came close to it.
It opened eyes that hadn’t existed a moment before.
And looked directly at Fragment A.
"Found you," it said. Then, quieter, deliberate, syllables assembling themselves with the same unnatural speed the rest of it had formed with — a name. Short. Simple. Utterly unfamiliar to every person standing in that corridor.
Nobody present had ever heard it before. Kagetsu felt it land somewhere far behind his own thoughts, in the same private space where Fragment A had been sitting nameless since Ch. 400 — and felt her flinch, hard, the instant the sound of it finished forming.
Its voice was nothing like the entity’s fractured warmth, nothing like the shape’s smiling menace, nothing like anything the corridor had produced before tonight. Flat. Procedural. The voice of something built for exactly one purpose and given no capacity to want anything beyond it.
The entity’s fractured voice cracked entirely, grief giving way to something closer to panic.
"That’s not a stranger," it said. "That’s a hunter. And it just said her name — a name none of us here have ever spoken aloud."
