Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto
Chapter 260: No One Is Material
Kabuto watched Naruto pass beneath his branch.
The boy sensed nothing through his concealment. Kabuto's task was to escort Kimimaro and secure Sasuke's transfer, not waste time upon one pursuer. He slipped through the canopy after the vessel, leaving Naruto unaware that anyone had been above him.
Farther west, a green figure ran along the forest road.
Lee had left the hospital as soon as he learned his friends were in danger. His newly repaired legs protested every stride, but excitement drowned caution beneath the rush of blood.
"Naruto, I am coming!"
Neji followed the pursuit marks on another route. His chakra had fallen badly during the fight with Kidōmaru; one of Chōji's ration pills had restored enough to keep moving. He did not know what waited ahead. He knew only that the others had continued without him.
At the split battlefield, Tonbo watched from concealment.
The confrontation that should have separated into single combats had become two against two. Shikamaru faced Tayuya while Kiba and Akamaru attacked the brothers Sakon and Ukon. The altered match favored Konoha, but it also gave each enemy opportunities that would never have appeared alone.
Tayuya's flute drove the three Doki forward. Spectral mouths emerged from their bodies and fed upon the chakra in Shikamaru's shadow. He changed the angle with a flash tag, stretched his technique across the ground, and caught Tayuya and one of the brothers at the same time.
Sakon tried to use the joined body to strike from two directions at once. Kiba had already seen the rhythm. Akamaru drove low, forcing the outer brother to guard his legs, while Kiba attacked the face emerging behind the first shoulder. Shikamaru's shadow froze them halfway through the correction.
"Kiba!"
Kiba and Akamaru crossed from opposite sides.
Their combined strike caught Sakon before he could separate cleanly. Claws and spinning force tore through him and smashed the body into the earth beside a broken tree. What remained scarcely looked capable of movement.
Ukon had withdrawn beneath his brother's flesh at the last instant. That retreat saved him from the center of the attack and concealed the moment he transferred through Kiba's contact wound.
Kiba turned toward Tayuya.
His body locked.
A face rose from his shoulder. Ukon had entered him during the contact, dissolving into a living layer fine enough to travel through flesh. Sakon's ruined body shifted upon the ground as the brothers divided what remained of their substance between them.
"You almost killed my brother," Ukon said from Kiba's neck. "Now every wound you take belongs to us too."
Akamaru barked and circled. There was no clean target. Shikamaru saw what had happened, but Tayuya was already forcing her way out of his shadow through the strength of the Cursed Seal.
"Kiba, hurry! I can't hold them!"
Kiba pulled a kunai. If the enemy shared his flesh and pain, then stabbing himself might injure all three bodies. It was a desperate answer, and he had no time to test it gently.
Tonbo saw something else.
The nerves he had placed upon Sakon during the fight had fallen away when the body dispersed. The technique had reduced living tissue to cellular fragments—perhaps smaller, down to proteins—and carried those fragments through Kiba. It was the answer to a problem Tonbo had studied for years.
His own distributed nerves could spread across a field, but moving his body through them remained beyond him. Turning flesh into chakra had failed repeatedly. Sakon and Ukon possessed another route: divide the body finely enough to pass through a living network, then assemble it again.
The method was not teleportation. Every fragment traveled through real tissue, carrying a blueprint of the whole while accepting temporary overlap with another organism. That distinction mattered. Tonbo did not need to turn himself into energy if Contact Evolution could learn to disassemble and guide living matter along the filaments it had already spread.
They had just demonstrated the process inside a student already carrying Tonbo's nerves.
He would not waste the opportunity.
Tonbo formed the Tiger seal.
The dormant filaments within Kiba awakened. They spread through muscle, blood, and chakra pathways, then crossed into the foreign tissue sharing those spaces. Branching marks rose beneath Kiba's skin and continued over the faces of both brothers.
"What is that?" Ukon demanded.
Sakon saw the same pattern and mistook it for an Inuzuka technique. Kiba assumed it belonged to the invaders. For one useful instant, all three feared the others had gained an advantage.
Information poured into Tonbo.
He traced how Ukon had loosened the boundaries of his cells, how the brothers preserved identity while their tissues overlapped, and how chakra guided separated material toward a coherent form. He did not yet understand enough to reproduce it, but he had captured the working process while it was active. A corpse examined afterward could never have shown him the same transitions.
The overlap also revealed why Kiba's idea was only half safe. An injury to the shared body would reach both intruders, but there were two of them. One brother could abandon the other, leaving Kiba bleeding while the survivor emerged elsewhere. The kunai might win the exchange and kill the person it was meant to save.
Kiba reversed the kunai and drove it toward his own side.
Tonbo had what he needed.
He released genjutsu through the nerves inside the shared body. Fear magnified until the sensation of confinement became unbearable. Ukon felt Kiba's flesh closing around him, felt Akamaru's teeth wherever he tried to emerge, and felt the foreign filaments tightening through every fragment of his divided form.
"Separate," Tonbo whispered from the trees.
The brothers tore themselves out before Kiba's blade landed.
Their exit opened thin wounds across Kiba's shoulder and ribs. He dropped to one knee but kept the kunai. Akamaru pressed against his uninjured side, ready to move the moment either enemy lunged.
Tonbo guided the extending nerves with them. The filaments left Kiba, divided between Sakon and Ukon, and rooted themselves inside both bodies. Chakra fed the new branches until the connection stabilized.
Kiba stumbled, his kunai cutting only cloth. Akamaru rushed between him and the enemies.
Sakon and Ukon stared at the dark patterns withdrawing beneath their skin. They did not know who had acted or why. Tonbo remained hidden. Revealing himself would change the battle before he learned how the students answered it.
He had gained the body's information and a model for movement through distributed nerves. Later, after the brothers died or were captured, he could compare the stored transition with their physical remains.
For now Shikamaru still faced Tayuya at full strength.
The Doki spirits consumed another section of his shadow. His strongest finishing technique required a restraint the Cursed Seal could break, and Kiba had barely regained control of his own limbs.
Intelligence could turn an opening into victory. It could not replace the teammate needed to exploit it.
Shikamaru changed the angle of his shadow and searched for one more move.
