Daigo remained in the center of the crater, observing the six figures lined up before him with analytical serenity. Pain, with his multiple bodies holding the empty gaze of the Rinnegan, and Banatel, the old samurai whose face reflected a mixture of ancestral resentment and bloodlust, made no move immediately.
They were waiting for Daigo to make the first move. They knew that any tactical error against a crystal style user with such physical strength could cost them their lives.
Daigo did not hesitate. His hands moved in a fluid sequence of hand seals, so fast that the shadows of his fingers could barely be distinguished. Upon finishing, he flexed his knees and slammed both palms with brutal force against the fragmented stone ground.
"Summoning Jutsu!"
A dull detonation echoed throughout Sunagakure, accompanied by a massive cloud of white smoke that expanded in a radius of more than one hundred meters, momentarily swallowing the sunlight. The shockwaves of the impact displaced the nearby debris like dry leaves.
When the wind blew and dispersed the curtain of smoke, the imposing silhouette of Matangi was revealed before everyone present.
The current leader of the elephant clan was no ordinary summoning. Her skin possessed a greyish, almost white tone, polished like marble, covered by subtle natural cracks that looked like battle scars. Her massive tusks were decorated with heavy bands of polished jade that glowed with a mystic green hue.
However, the most unsettling part of her presence was her eyes: a sapphire blue so deep and dense that it gave the impression of housing entire galaxies within her pupils. The sheer physical mass and ancestral aura emanating from Matangi made Pain narrow his eyes and caused Banatel to take an involuntary step back, tightening his grip on the hilt of his katana as cold sweat ran down his neck.
Matangi did not need to observe with her sight to understand the scenario. Through the thick soles of her feet, her seismic sense instantly transmitted the topography of the area, the number of enemies, and the instability of the chakra in the surroundings.
She knew the situation was critical. The last time she had spoken with Daigo, she had left him a very clear warning: she was only to be summoned if the very existence of Daigo or the survival of the village depended on it.
Raising her gaze obliquely, Matangi sensed Daigo's figure above her head, standing between her massive ears, and then directed the pressure of her presence toward the six opponents standing a short distance away.
"I understand the gravity of this, Daigo," Matangi's voice echoed, a deep vibration that made the foundations of the adjacent buildings rumble.
"I need time, Matangi," Daigo replied directly, his voice firm but devoid of emotion.
"Keep these six at bay. I am going to enter Sage Mode."
Matangi nodded with majestic slowness.
"Consider it done. Let nothing interrupt your communion."
Without wasting a single second, Matangi raised her massive front limbs and brought them down with devastating force against the ground. The sand did not just crack; it took on a life of its own under her control. Large expanses of terrain liquefied instantly, transforming into thick, aggressive whips of sand mixed with hard minerals that rose into the sky and then launched at high speed against the six enemies.
Pain, seeing the attack coming, took a step forward and extended his right hand calmly.
"Shinra Tensei."
A violent, invisible wave of repulsion struck the first sand whips, pulverizing them into a rain of dust that fell over the destroyed streets. At the same time, Banatel unsheathed his katana with a blinding movement. His chakra, dense and sharp, wrapped the metallic blade in a silver-blue glow that cleanly severed the remaining earth whips trying to flank him from the left.
Taking advantage of the cover, Pain's Animal Path quickly performed the required seals and slammed the ground. Three massive clouds of smoke made their appearance simultaneously.
From them emerged the noisy giant Rhinoceros, the terrifying dark-scaled Centipede, and finally, a sharp-beaked Flying Bird that immediately soared to dominate the skies. The three summoned beasts charged in a pincer maneuver directly toward Matangi's position.
The leader of the elephants showed no trace of panic. She slammed the ground again with her hind legs, activating a chakra network that reacted with the mineral deposits beneath the village.
A forest of pink crystal spears emerged violently from the earth, impaling the Centipede's body from side to side and altering the Rhinoceros's trajectory. Matangi's large-scale attacks showed no mercy to her surroundings: buildings, stone structures, and entire streets were flattened or covered by crystalline formations while she kept the three summons and the enemies at bay.
While Matangi fought this fierce battle of containment, Daigo was completely oblivious to his physical surroundings. Having seated himself in the lotus position on top of Matangi's head, he closed his remaining eye and disconnected his perception from the light and sound outside. He trusted implicitly in Matangi's ability to protect him.
In the silence of his deep meditation, Daigo began to search for the exact frequency of the world. For years he had trained to isolate the noise of the world and concentrate on the primordial vibration of nature.
After a few seconds of intense inner calm, he found it: the melody. A constant pulse, similar to the rumbling of a distant yet powerful drum, echoed in his mind. It was the sound of natural chakra flowing through the earth, the air, and the sand. Daigo opened the pores of his body and began to assimilate that external energy, integrating it meticulously with his own chakra without allowing the mix to unbalance him.
In the physical realm, the transformation was not long in manifesting. Devoid of his Kage robe and wearing only dark combat pants, Daigo's chest and shoulders were exposed to the wind. His long grey hair floated wildly due to the air currents generated by Matangi's battle. Gradually, markings of a deep forest green color began to trace around his cheekbones and forehead, spreading like thin branches across his skin.
Finally, Daigo opened his single eye. The round pupil had mutated into a resplendent amber-yellow color with the mark of Senjutsu.
Simultaneously, his crystal eye, set in the other socket, began to glow intensely with a mystical energy of the same golden hue, channeling nature chakra through the synthetic network connecting it to his nervous system.
Sage Mode was complete.
On the battlefield, Matangi was at her limit. The relentless bombardment of Pain's Shinra Tensei, combined with the continuous thrusts of Banatel's chakra-infused katana, had shattered much of her crystal armor and caused deep cracks in her jade tusks.
Seeing that the summoning was weakened, Pain and Banatel prepared to deliver the final blow to eradicate her.
It was at that precise moment that Daigo broke his meditation posture and leapt with monumental force from Matangi's head, soaring into the air like an inverted meteor.
"Thank you, Matangi. It's my turn," Daigo whispered from above.
"Make them pay," replied the elephant leader before dissolving into a dense curtain of smoke, returning to her territory to recover from her injuries.
Seeing Daigo descending at high speed, two of Pain's paths—the Human Path and the Animal Path—along with Banatel himself, launched themselves simultaneously toward the Kage's falling trajectory to intercept him in the air where he would be unable to dodge.
But Daigo did not alter his posture to dodge. Imbued with the superhuman physical strength granted by Sage Mode, he extended his limbs and struck with incalculable ferocity.
His right fist hit the Human Path's face dead-on, while his left leg delivered a descending axe kick against the Animal Path. The pressure of the impact created an air shockwave that was felt several hundred meters away.
Both of Pain's bodies were slammed against the stone floor with such violence that they disintegrated instantly, reduced to an unrecognizable mass of broken bones and receptor metal.
Banatel, attempting to block the secondary impact with his sword, was hit by the shockwave of the Senjutsu attack. Although he managed to stay on his feet thanks to his vast experience and his chakra armor, the old samurai spat a mouthful of blood as he felt his internal organs shake and suffer micro-tears from the vibration of the natural energy surrounding Daigo.
"You damned monster...!" Banatel growled, wiping the corner of his mouth with his forearm.
Before Daigo could fully touch the ground, Pain extended his arm once more, preparing to launch a point-blank Shinra Tensei to crush Daigo's bone structure.
However, Daigo did not need to perform hand seals. Utilizing his absolute mastery over the crystal element in Sage Mode, he reacted at the speed of thought and fired a massive volley of pink crystal needles directly at Pain's eyes.
The imminent threat forced Pain to change tactics. Instead of using repulsion offensively against Daigo, he was forced to execute a defensive fan-shaped Shinra Tensei to deflect the thousands of crystal needles threatening to destroy his vision.
Taking advantage of that second of distraction, Pain's Preta Path appeared stealthily behind Daigo. He extended both hands intending to grab Daigo's head and absorb the entirety of his chakra to render him defenseless. His palms touched the exposed skin of Daigo's shoulders and began to drain the energy.
That was his fatal mistake.
The chakra that the Preta Path began to absorb was no ordinary chakra, but the pure energy of nature channeled through Sage Mode. Lacking the training and biological control necessary to process Senjutsu, the Preta Path's skin began to harden immediately. Rocks and calcified formations started sprouting from his arms and face.
Within three seconds, Pain's receptacle body began to petrify gradually, turning into an inanimate statue.
Daigo, sensing the contact through Sage Mode perception, spun on his axis without a single trace of surprise. With a fluid and brutal motion, he delivered a natural energy-imbued punch straight into the chest of the petrified Preta Path. The blow shattered the statue completely, reducing it to a pile of useless stone debris that fell to the ground.
Pain, observing the scene through the eyes of the Preta Path right before losing the visual connection, understood the gravity of the danger. The combination of speed, raw physical strength, and elemental mastery that Daigo was displaying surpassed the parameters of any ordinary shinobi.
Determined to eradicate the threat before losing more receptacles, Pain began to ascend into the sky through gravity manipulation, rising until he hovered several dozen meters above the center of Sunagakure.
From that height, Pain began concentrating a massive amount of chakra into his body. His objective was clear: create a large-scale Shinra Tensei to completely flatten Sunagakure and erase Daigo from the map.
Daigo detected the energy accumulation in the air instantly. He knew perfectly well what that move meant. Through Senjutsu perception, he located the position of the Naraka Path, the only remaining receptacle capable of repairing and reviving the other destroyed bodies if anything was left of them.
Appearing with instantaneous acceleration in front of the Naraka Path, Daigo gave him not the slightest chance to react. Multiple crystal spears sprouted violently from the earth right beneath the Pain body's feet, impaling and pinning him to the ground.
Without losing a millisecond, Daigo concentrated natural energy into his right fist and delivered a direct strike to the Naraka Path's head, pulverizing the skull and upper torso of the receptacle. With that, he permanently eliminated Nagato's ability to regenerate his squad of the Paths of Pain.
At that moment, Banatel, having dragged himself back up with great difficulty, took advantage of Daigo's divided attention to launch his most desperate attack. Channeling every last drop of his chakra into his katana's blade, the old samurai lunged forward, executing a horizontal slash aimed at decapitating the Kage.
The pressure of Banatel's attack was such that the air around Daigo was forced outward, creating a small vacuum and raising a cloud of dry dust. However, Daigo did not even bother to dodge.
With a deadly serious face and his amber gaze fixed on his opponent, Daigo extended his left hand and caught the katana mid-flight. His palm, now blackened by the iron jutsu and covered by a thin layer of pink crystal reinforced with Senjutsu, withstood the force of the blade without suffering a single cut.
The sound of steel striking Daigo's defense echoed like a dry bell toll.
Banatel's eyes widened in absolute terror. Never in his decades of combat as a samurai had he seen a warrior stop a high-level chakra-infused slash using only a bare hand—not even his own rival, Mifune, was capable of that.
"It's impossible..." Banatel whispered, his voice trembling from exertion and disbelief.
Daigo did not answer with words. Looking at him with absolute coldness and giving him no room to retreat or drop the weapon, the Kage used his free hand to manifest a thick crystal spear directly from the ground.
He grabbed it by the middle, snapped it with a sharp strike from his elbow, and with relentless precision, drove it into Banatel's stomach.
The old samurai instinctively tried to block the impact with his torso armor, but the crystal tip reinforced with natural energy drove through the metal plate and flesh as if they were paper.
The force of the strike propelled Banatel backward, pinning him against the remains of a nearby wall, the spear transfixing his body as life slipped from his eyes while he spat blood uncontrollably.
Having disposed of the last immediate grounded threat, Daigo raised his gaze to the sky.
Up above, Pain's Tendo Path continued to gather a massive amount of chakra. The sphere of gravitational pressure forming over the village was beginning to distort the sunlight, threatening to crush everything within a radius of several kilometers.
Daigo clenched his teeth. The memories of his Naruto wind days regarding the devastation this same attack had caused in Konoha flashed through his mind. If he allowed Pain to complete the technique, Sunagakure would cease to exist in seconds, and thousands of innocent lives would be lost beneath the rubble.
"Not in my village," Daigo declared to himself.
He began redistributing most of the natural chakra remaining in his body, channeling it heavily into the network of his left socket. The crystal eye, incapable of processing such a volume of energy without suffering structural damage, began to vibrate wildly, emitting a high-pitched hum that echoed inside Daigo's skull.
A glowing golden and fluorescent pink light began to pour from the socket, illuminating his face with blinding intensity.
He was about to use his most destructive attack, a technique originally designed as an absolute last resort—the very same one capable of eliminating threats on the level of the Third Hokage as it had in the past.
"Light of Ruin!"
A giant beam of pure concentrated chakra energy and Senjutsu shot from Daigo's crystal eye, projecting into the heavens in a perfectly vertical trajectory straight toward Pain's position. The column of light was as wide as a tower and tore through the atmosphere with a deafening roar that vibrated the air for dozens of kilometers around.
Pain, from the heights, saw the torrent of standard and natural chakra approaching. His Rinnegan pupils dilated for the first time with a trace of genuine panic. He realized immediately that if he attempted to maintain the focus of the large-scale Shinra Tensei to destroy the village, Daigo's beam would pierce through the forming gravitational barrier and completely disintegrate Yahiko's body.
With no alternative left, Nagato was forced to instantly alter his technique's configuration. He reduced the Shinra Tensei's area of effect from a massive impact over the village to a hyper-focused repulsion point directed straight down to intercept Daigo's attack.
"Shinra Tensei!"
The two titanic forces collided in mid-air, halfway between the ground and the heights.
The impact produced no immediate sound, but rather a pressure wave that momentarily deafened everyone in the region. Pain's mass of pure gravity fought to crush and deflect Daigo's concentrated energy column, while Daigo's beam struggled to pierce the barrier and reach the Rinnegan user.
On the ground, Daigo maintained the attack through sheer force of will. The pain he experienced was indescribable: the friction of uncontrolled chakra channeled through the crystal eye began to overheat the nerve tissue of his face, burning his surrounding skin and causing blood to gush violently from the socket, which evaporated immediately. The pressure inside the crystal prosthesis reached critical mass.
With a sharp snap that echoed in Daigo's mind, the crystal eye could no longer endure the Senjutsu overload and exploded into a thousand fragments inside his own socket.
The flow of the Light of Ruin cut off abruptly as the catalyst was destroyed. However, Pain's Shinra Tensei could not sustain itself after the collision either. The simultaneous cancellation of both energies generated an omnidirectional shockwave of a magnitude never before seen in the territory.
The force of the impact was so monumental that the structure of the crystal dome surrounding the village—which remained active and firm thanks to the continuous flow of the Dragon Vein—began to crack massively.
In a matter of seconds, the immense crystal dome that had protected Sunagakure gave way beneath the gravitational pressure and shattered to pieces, collapsing into an endless rain of crystal fragments that showered over the surrounding area.
This massive display of power was witnessed by all forces deployed in the area: the Sunagakure ninja defending internal positions, the invaders and Iwagakure reinforcements watching from the secondary lines, and the members of Akatsuki awaiting the invasion's outcome.
Everyone, without exception, froze in place, unable to utter a word at such a display of destructive force. In the minds of every spectator, only one word echoed to describe the warriors at the epicenter of the disaster:
monsters.
When the shockwave finally dissipated and the dust began to settle, Pain's figure was no longer suspended in the sky. Yahiko's body, severely damaged by the blast wave and with most of his chakra receptors bent or detached, had slammed violently into the village ground, lying motionless among the ruins of a collapsed building.
In the center of the main crater, Daigo remained standing. His posture was rigid, but his body trembled slightly from extreme exhaustion and neurological shock. From the empty socket where his crystal eye used to be, a steady trickle of dark blood flowed down his cheek and fell onto his exposed chest, blending with the burns sustained from the heat of the chakra.
At that moment, the battlefield's atmosphere underwent an almost poetic transformation.
The residual heat from the Light of Ruin colliding with the gravitational barrier had sublimated the tons of destroyed crystal from the dome, converting them into microscopic suspended particles.
The sky above Sunagakure took on a mystical pink hue, and a gentle drizzle of crystal dust began to fall over the entire village. The glints of light filtering through the shimmering dust created a surreal and majestic scene, burned into the memory of every ninja who survived to witness it.
Slowly, among the rubble of the destroyed building, Pain's body began to push itself up. With his clothes shredded and his mobility reduced due to the loss of the other five paths and the disruption of chakra flow, Nagato channeled the last of his energy into the receptacle's vocal cords to speak.
Pain observed Daigo. Despite seeing Daigo bloodied and deprived of one of his senses, there was no superiority in the Rinnegan user's eyes, but rather a profound respect laced with a tinge of genuine dread.
A shinobi without divine lineage, without legendary eyes like the Sharingan or the Rinnegan, had been capable of deciphering his strategy, destroying five of his bodies, and pushing him to the absolute limit of his physical and chakra capacities.
Using chakra amplification so his voice would echo in every corner of the devastated village, Pain broke the silence.
"I... as a god with the power of my Rinnegan, Daigo the Crystal Demon from now on...", declared Pain, his voice breaking yet carrying absolute solemnity,
"I declare you The Calamity of the Shinobis."
