The bakery was a small, charming establishment tucked into an arched stone doorway beneath a modern residential tower.

The smell of caramel, baked flour, and spices hit Emily the moment they stepped inside.

While Sebastian stood near the entrance, his sharp eyes casually monitoring the street outside, Emily stood at the glass display case, admiring the array of intricate pastries.

She ordered a flaky, golden pastry filled with spiced apple and cream, along with a cold iced tea brewed with mint.

They took a seat at a small bistro table in an outdoor courtyard surrounded by climbing ivy and modern glass walls that muted the street noise into a pleasant background murmur.

Emily took a bite of the pastry, closing her eyes as the warm, buttery crust practically melted. "Okay. This alone made leaving the estate worth it."

"I am pleased it meets your approval," Sebastian said, sitting opposite her.

He declined to order anything for himself, maintaining his usual posture of quiet vigilance.

As Emily ate, her gaze drifted toward the higher levels of the city visible beyond the courtyard walls.

High above the residential towers, a pair of sleek, unmarked transports glided past in tight formation, their dark, polished bodies reflecting the morning sun.

Unlike the civilian transport drones, these crafts moved with absolute precision, their engines almost silent.

"Private transports?" Emily asked, pointing subtly with her fork.

Sebastian’s eyes tracked the craft for a fraction of a second before returning to her.

"Indeed. Escorts attached to an arriving delegation."

From where?"

"The insignia on the tail wing, though subtle, belongs to the Sorel," Sebastian replied casually, as if noting the weather.

"A prominent Talented line from the southern territories. Their primary holdings specialize in space technology and high-density material research."

Emily frowned slightly, setting her pastry down.

"Will they be there for... the Games?"

"Indirectly," Sebastian said.

"The Veilrend Games themselves will take place within the secured, restricted sectors of Pyreptar Academy, miles from here."

"But the surrounding regions—including Arcana City’s hubs, are currently hosting the preparatory arrivals."

" Factions from across the hidden world are securing luxury accommodations, establishing private communication networks, and conducting discreet intelligence gathering."

Emily looked around the peaceful courtyard.

A mother was sitting two tables over, patiently feeding a toddler while reading a digital magazine on her slate.

A young couple was laughing over a shared dessert.

"It feels surreal," Emily admitted, leaning forward and lowering her voice.

"The world is just going on like normal. But right now, some of the most dangerous people alive are flying into this exact region, and nobody here has any idea."

"And that is precisely how it must remain," Sebastian said smoothly.

"The stability of the modern world relies upon the division between the paranormal and the mundane."

"If the general public were aware that dozens of clandestine assassin houses and high-tier Talented families were gathering in one location to test their young heirs in mortal competition, it would induce unnecessary panic. Ignorance, in this context, is a form of protection."

And what about Morgan?" Emily asked, the question slipping out before she could stop it.

The air between them grew slightly stiller. Sebastian’s expression remained perfectly unreadable, though his eyes softened marginally.

"Morgan Thane’s name remains a quiet shadow within the hidden world," Sebastian said evenly.

"To the ordinary citizens walking these streets, he does not exist. To the Great Houses and the assassin networks, his disappearance during the Dark Maestro Incident remains an unresolved anomaly...a variable—one that many have assumed was terminated."

"They think he’s dead," Emily murmured.

Many do," Sebastian acknowledged.

"The incident claimed numerous Initiates. But the paranormal world moves forward quickly, Miss Whizen."

"Factions do not linger on lost pieces when new ventures are on the horizon. But those who truly understand the depth of House Thane’s bloodline know better than to make absolute assumptions."

He paused, looking at Emily with a grounded, steady gaze.

"However, as Master Merlin reminded you, the Veilrend Games are about you. Your growth, your stability, and your emergence as a Talented in your own right."

Emily swallowed, processing his words, before taking a sip of her iced tea.

"Sometimes it feels like we’re just marionettes on a stage."

Sebastian lips twitched upward with the fainted ghost of a smile.

"The stage has existed for centuries. But the actors change. And you have been given instruction by one of the few individuals who answers to no faction on this earth."

He checked a small, elegant pocket watch tucked into his vest, clicking the silver casing shut with a soft snap.

"Our window at the Vault of the Arcana is approaching, Miss Vance. If you have finished your refreshment, we should proceed."

"Right," Emily said, brushing a few stray crumbs from her lap and standing up.

"Let’s go get these focus stones."

The Vault of the Arcana was located in the subterranean heart of Arcana City’s financial district.

Unlike the bright, bustling promenade above, the area surrounding the Vault was quiet, characterized by massive, windowless structures built from reinforced dark granite and heavy titanium composite plating.

Atmospheric dampening fields buzzed quietly in the background, minimizing electronic interference.

The Vault of the Arcana was run under the front of a bank, a joint venture between the several powerful Talented factions.

Sebastian led Emily through a heavy, pressurized glass doorway into the Vault’s main reception hall.

The interior was vast and austere.

Tall marble pillars stretched up toward a vaulted ceiling inlaid with silver circuit patterns that glowed with a faint, steady pulse.

Armed security personnel wearing sleek, tactical armor stood stationed at key transit points, their eyes concealed behind polarized visors.

Each guard carried a short-barreled sidearm integrated with kinetic-disruption modules—weapons clearly meant to neutralize Talented threats.

At the central counter sat an elder clerk wearing a crisp, dark formal suit.

His hair was stark white, and his hands were covered in fine, black leather gloves embroidered with tiny runic threads.

"Welcome to the Vault of the Arcana," the clerk said, his voice dry and measured as Sebastian and Emily approached.

"State your business and authentication tier."

Sebastian stepped forward, placing a small, obsidian cylinder onto the velvet pad on the counter.

"Retrieval for the Hale Crest account. Order reference seven_seven_nine."

The clerk tapped a series of keys on a console. A soft blue light swept over the obsidian cylinder, reading the encrypted signature.

A moment later, the console chimed, and the clerk’s neutral posture shifted almost imperceptibly.

He sat up slightly straighter, his eyes flicking briefly toward Sebastian, then toward Emily, before returning to his screen.

"Authorization verified. Master Hale Crest’s order has been prepared under Class-A containment protocol," the clerk said, his tone markedly more respectful.

"Please wait here while I retrieve the transit case from the primary vault."

"Thank you," Sebastian replied politely.

As the clerk stepped through a heavily reinforced door behind the counter, Emily leaned closer to Sebastian.

"Class-A containment? What exactly are these focus stones?"

Harmonized crystalline matrices," Sebastian explained in a low voice.

"They are harvested from high-density fissures deep within the earth’s crust and refined through precise thermodynamic processes.

They’re a part of the master’s latest technology."

"When properly tuned, they allow a Talented individual to channel elemental energy with significantly reduced kinetic pressure."

"So they’re like...power stabilizers?"

"More accurately, they act as atmospheric dampeners for your specific resonance," Sebastian corrected.

"When you channel lightning through your Talented ability, the primary danger to your own nervous system is the rapid, ungrounded feedback."

" Master Merlin intends to integrate these focus stones into your daily training regimen to allow you to practice high-voltage discharge without risking neural burnout."

Before Emily could reply, the heavy reinforced door opened, and the clerk returned carrying a compact, brushed steel case marked with double layered biometric locks.

He placed it carefully onto the velvet pad.

"Four harmonized focus stones, set to the requested elemental frequency," the clerk reported, pressing his thumb against the side of the case to disengage the preliminary seal.

"Master Hale Crest’s account has been debited directly."

"Exquisite," Sebastian said, reaching out to lift the handle of the case.

"We appreciate your efficiency."

As Sebastian picked up the case, a soft chime echoed near the entrance of the reception hall.

The heavy glass doors slid open, and a small group stepped into the Vault.

Emily turned her head instinctively, her honed perception picking up the sudden shift in atmosphere that accompanied the newcomers.

Walking in the center of the group was a young man who appeared to be roughly Emily’s age.

He wore an impeccably tailored suit, his dark hair styled with precise, deliberate care. His expression was cool, distant, and marked by a quiet, effortless arrogance.

Flanking him were two broad-shouldered men in dark grey coats.

They didn’t look like ordinary bodyguards, their postures were loose, their eyes constantly scanning the room with trained, predatory efficiency.

Emily’s gaze lingered on the emblem pinned to the young man’s lapel—a stylized silver falcon perched atop an inverted sword. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

Sebastian’s posture didn’t change, but his eyes narrowed imperceptibly.

He subtly adjusted his position, standing slightly in front of Emily as he addressed the clerk.

"We shall take our leave now. Good day."
