After hanging up the phone, Ye Zheng breathed a sigh of relief and exchanged a glance with Yang Xiao; the tension in their eyes eased quite a bit.

Both times, Song Xin answered the phone, and the details matched up, so there shouldn’t be any issues.

The first call from Chief Zhou was also answered by Song Xin, purely by coincidence.

"Why don’t you... just not go? Can’t you ask your questions over the phone?" Chief Zhou asked cautiously, keenly sensing that Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng were worried about something.

"It’s not convenient. Some things are better asked in person." After saying goodbye to Chief Zhou and the others, Yang Xiao set off with Ye Zheng, accompanied by two fully armed security staff.

At the clinic, Song Xin was in the middle of changing a patient’s dressing. After she finished, Yang Xiao invited her into the on-duty room, and the three sat down.

"Doctor Song, how are you related to Doctor Yang Shuzhen?" Ye Zheng asked.

To avoid any suspicion, this conversation was almost exclusively between Ye Zheng and Song Xin, with Yang Xiao mostly serving as a filter and a good-luck charm on the side.

"Yang Shuzhen is my mother. Why are you suddenly asking about her?" Due to a previous misunderstanding when Ye Zheng came asking for someone, Song Xin didn’t have a particularly good attitude towards Ye Zheng.

Ye Zheng used the conversational skills that Yang Xiao taught her on the way there to smooth things over, and with Chief Zhou from the Security Section vouching for them, Song Xin had no doubts about the two of them.

When Ye Zheng mentioned the Zhou Wenqing case from back then, Song Xin actually remembered: "I know this case. My mother talked about it for a long time after Zhou Wenqing died."

"Talked about what? Did your mother think Zhou Wenqing was wronged?" Ye Zheng pressed on.

"She never mentioned that. She suspected Zhou Wenqing suffered severe psychological trauma, and she believed it was related to emotions."

"She wanted to investigate further, to find out why Zhou Wenqing did such things, but... that very night, Zhou Wenqing committed suicide to escape punishment." Song Xin sighed.

"Do you have any impression of Zhou Wenqing?" Ye Zheng persistently asked.

"No." Ye Zheng shook her head, "I was young then and hadn’t started working at the factory. I was studying in the city. I only heard my mother mention it by chance later."

Mentioning her mother suddenly made Song Xin feel a bit downhearted. Ye Zheng instinctively wanted to reach out and hold her hand to comfort her.

Yet, she suddenly caught sight of Yang Xiao’s warning glance and shivered in fear, quickly realizing that such an action was inappropriate.

Although she and Song Xin were both women, considering she was in front of her "husband" Yang Xiao, being too close with another woman could attract the ghost’s resentment.

Though Zhou Wenqing shouldn’t be such a model based on the era’s background, making it unlikely to attract attention.

But better safe than sorry, as life is precious, so it’s best to be cautious.

After briefly comforting Song Xin, Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng prepared to leave.

"Wait a second!" Just as Yang Xiao was about to leave the clinic, Song Xin’s voice called from behind.

Yang Xiao instinctively turned around, only to see Song Xin running towards him with a bag in hand. As she reached him, she handed the bag to Yang Xiao:

"Take this back with you. You don’t look well; you’ve probably not been resting well lately. It’s all for replenishing blood and energy."

As soon as she said that, Yang Xiao’s heart skipped a beat, feeling as if a cold gaze was suddenly fixed on him.

That gaze shot from behind him, hidden in some dark corner.

But just for a split second, Yang Xiao immediately responded with what could be considered an ideal exemplary reaction.

With a snap, he flicked Song Xin’s hand away, causing the bag to fall to the ground, scattering the medicines all over.

"Stay away from me! I’m a married man!" Yang Xiao shouted, "I dislike any females other than my wife. Even if a female mosquito bites me, I’ll exterminate its entire family to quench my anger!"

"I, Ma Jiefang, am a good man, loyal and devoted to love!" Yang Xiao continued.

Yang Xiao’s outburst was more for the Fierce Ghost hiding in some nook than for Song Xin. It was the only way Yang Xiao thought he could save his life.

However, it was clear that the biggest victim of this maneuver was Song Xin, who had her kindness misinterpreted as seducing someone else’s husband in public.

It was nighttime, but there were still some medical staff and patients inside the clinic, all witnessing the bustling scene.

According to Yang Xiao’s prediction, this young nurse would definitely defend herself and then cry out of grievance.

Although he felt guilty, knowing he had gone too far, he had no choice. Even if not for his own life, he had to think of the wellbeing of humanity.

Keeping Yang Xiao alive—once out, he could rid the world of evil, eliminate Evil Cultivators, and save countless innocent lives, an outcome too significant for him to imagine.

But he was wrong because the next second, he was punched hard.

Song Xin, who seemed like an unassuming little girl, neither cried nor made a fuss; instead, she promptly chased after Yang Xiao and hit him.

Her fists rained down like a storm, and it took Ye Zheng and the two accompanying security personnel to finally pull her away, leaving Yang Xiao with dark circles under his eyes, a scratched face, and even a bloody nose.

"Ma Jiefang, don’t let me see you again next time!" Song Xin, brandishing a brick she picked up from somewhere, yelled at Yang Xiao while stomping her foot: "Every time Granny sees you, I’ll beat you! Beat you to death!"

Yang Xiao: "...I was wrong"

They finally managed to calm the fierce tiger that was Song Xin back to the clinic, allowing Yang Xiao to escape.

As they headed back, Yang Xiao occasionally looked over his shoulder, worried that the crazy girl Song Xin might come chasing after him, leaving psychological shadows.

This girl was too powerful; the last time Yang Xiao was beaten this badly was against the Withered Bone Pavilion’s Great Protector at the Half-step Nether Realm.

If Yang Xiao hadn’t protected his lower body tightly, the Mirror Ghost Yang Jing could have easily inherited a hefty sum of his legacy in the middle of the night.

The atmosphere on the way back wasn’t great. Even the two accompanying security staff members did not quite understand why Yang Xiao publicly humiliated a young girl from the clinic.

Everyone had a good impression of Song Xin, a very enthusiastic and principled girl.

People didn’t really believe she would privately pursue Yang Xiao.

Song Xin was recognized in the factory for having a good family, a good character, being educated, and being beautiful, the dream goddess of many.

Even some sons of factory leaders were rejected flatly, let alone Yang Xiao, an outsider.

The beating... well deserved!
