Apocalypse Gachapon - Chapter 1997: Two paths

Ye Zhongming brought six guards, all of them Gold Masked Warriors. Jie Su brought more people, but because they came here to eat, he had some of them wait on the aircraft, bringing only two with him.
At the very beginning of the assault, two Gold Masked Warriors and one Su Clan guard were killed, reducing the eight-person guard force by nearly half.
“Retreat!”
Jie Su’s voice came through. He was the first to pull Ye Zhongming and start retreating.
He had to retreat because, just from the frontal blade light, the attacker there was stronger than them. Trying to force their way through was basically impossible.
While pulling Ye Zhongming back, Jie Su swung his arm forward, and a beam of light flew out, landing on the still-powerful blade light.
The force of the collision produced a huge recoil. The already damaged restaurant door was shattered entirely, along with the wall next to the door.
The force accelerated the separation between the two sides and also shook the waiter, who was sneak-attacking on the side, backing several steps.
By this time, Jie Su, pulling Ye Zhongming, had reached the place where they had eaten earlier. There was a window there leading to the side road.
With a loud bang, the lifeform that had emitted the cold airflow from underground earlier burst up. Along with it appeared countless sharp ice spikes, about twenty centimeters long, gleaming eyes under the light.
The waiter, who the airflow had blown back, stabilized his posture and charged towards them. Outside the door, heavy footsteps sounded, and the ground seemed to shake with them.
The expressions of Ye Zhongming, Jie Su, and the others were not good. In their hearts, they knew that the reputation of Starshine City had made them lower their guard, giving these assassins the opportunity.
This was the Neutral City! It hadn’t changed for so many years. It was still the Art Capital, the Commercial City, the premier vacation spot for the cosmic races in their leisure time, and the undisputed venue for conferences big and small.
For so many years, no one had ever heard of anyone openly attacking on the streets here!
It was this notion that made both men feel nothing would happen, so they lowered their guard. When choosing a place to eat, their first consideration was taste, not safety.
But someone was trying to kill them.
The two men no longer had the mood to think about the price these people would pay later. What they thought now was… to escape quickly.
Since these people had made their move, they would certainly try every means to kill them here. They had to escape, even if the enemy might guess the chosen route, or even if it was a trap; they had to jump in.
Because, escaping into a trap, they could still struggle. If they stayed put, they would undoubtedly die.
“Order Leader, you go first.”
A Gold Masked Warrior stood firm. He didn’t look back, blocking in front of everyone.
If those ice spikes and the waiter were allowed to get close, the momentary delay would be enough for the most powerful blade-wielder to arrive, and everyone would lose the chance to escape.
So he stepped out and chose to sacrifice himself to buy time for everyone to escape.
“Come back!”
Ye Zhongming shouted.
A single Gold Masked Warrior couldn’t possibly hold off these three assassins. The instant he bought with his life would only be enough for them to break through the window. Sacrificing a person for that, Ye Zhongming felt it wasn’t worth it.
“I’ll go too!”
After all, Ye Zhongming wasn’t these people’s Order Leader. The orders they received came from Cheng Liujin: to protect Ye Zhongming at all costs.
Now, with the situation critical, they must stand up, even if it meant death.
At this moment, Ye Zhongming gained a whole new understanding of the Star-Eye Clan people.
The other two Gold Masked Warriors looked at each other. One immediately charged out without saying anything, but his attitude was clear: three people should be able to buy more escape time for those behind.
“Order Leader, go. Don’t let their sacrifice be in vain.”
The last Gold Masked Warrior pulled Ye Zhongming, closely following Jie Su through the broken window onto the street, quickly fleeing in the direction away from the restaurant.
Now, only one guard each remained with Jie Su and Ye Zhongming.
From inside the restaurant came the sound of intense fighting. The building began to shake and collapse, but these sounds suddenly ceased after the heavy footsteps entered the restaurant.
Ye Zhongming painfully clenched his fist. He knew those three Gold Masked Warriors were gone.
They might have been able to fight the other two attackers for a while, but the lifeform using the blade head-on was far more powerful than they were. That was an existence even Jie Su knew they couldn’t match.
As they ran, both Jie Su and Ye Zhongming, in their anger, had a huge question: Who? Who wanted to assassinate them here?
“Ahead is the conference center. There are fairly strong guard forces there. These people should hesitate to act there.”
Jie Su meant that once they reached there, it would be enough. No matter how arrogant these assassins were, they wouldn’t choose to enter the conference center. That was where the cosmic races held meetings, with representatives stationed year-round and guards that were not weak.
This was the simplest method to escape.
However, a problem soon arose.
Suddenly, a fork appeared in front of them.
Originally a straight side alley, it was split by a triangular building, extending into two paths. Bypassing this huge building, and after less than five hundred meters, was the conference center.
Which path to choose?
Behind them, two figures appeared. The first was the waiter. Not far behind him followed a huge lifeform, holding a giant blade in each of its four arms.
It seemed the sacrifice of the three Gold Masked Warriors had taken the life of that ice-element ability assassin.
They had to make a choice now; otherwise, the sacrifice of the three warriors would become meaningless.
But just as they were about to choose a direction, a force erupted from under their feet. Different from before, this force seemed to carry an endless scorching heat.
The two men’s faces changed greatly, and they pounced towards opposite sides.
“Meet there!”
Jie Su knew it was time to make a decision. If they wanted to take the same path, one side would have to charge through this emerging flame person. However, neither of them could do that before the other two assassins caught up from behind. So splitting up was the best method.
Jie Su and his guard, Ye Zhongming, and the last Masked Warrior were forcibly separated here.
Soon, the waiter assassin and the blade-wielding giant arrived, meeting with this flame person who had just emerged from the ground. Strangely, they did not continue the pursuit.
“Let’s go. Our mission is complete.”
The waiter said calmly. The three immediately turned around and returned the way they came, quickly disappearing at the end of the alley.
