In the time it takes to smoke two cigarettes, 300 pounds of rice and flour are in place.
“Zhuzi, are you checking the loading?”
Zhang Su felt it was too fast when the two came back.
“No.” Zhao Dezhu shook his head: “It’s all ready in the warehouse.”
“Boss Zhang rest assured, this grain is all new rice and flour from this year, guaranteed to be fragrant!” Ma Changshou quickly explained.
“Bozai, check the goods!”
Zhang Su nodded at Lu Yubo.
“Haha, alright!”
Lu Yubo got excited.
When he pulled out the grain sampler, the folks from West Camp Village shrank their brains, what kind of squad is this, that carries such things?
Zhang Su’s mouth twitched, quickly stopping Lu Yubo, saying, “Are you crazy, what do you use this thing for, if you stick it into the rice and flour, are we still going to eat it!”
“Oh, that’s right!”
Lu Yubo scratched his head, hurriedly put away the grain sampler, pulled out a utility knife to cut open the burlap bag, looked inside, sure enough, it was bright white rice, then he checked the flour.
“Good, everything is fine. Village Chief Ma is very honest, come on, load the car.”
“Quick, help Boss Zhang load the car!”
The villagers enthusiastically moved and neatly arranged the goods on the vehicle, their service attitude was simply top-notch.
These grains weren’t much for West Camp Village, where only one in ten people survived, food was extremely plentiful.
“Boss Zhang!” As Zhang Su prepared to leave, Ma Changshou suddenly called him.
Zhang Su turned his head to look at Ma Changshou: “Anything else, old village chief?”
“I wouldn’t dare… well, may I ask where you plan to camp?”
Ma Changshou was a smart person, since there was no conflict today, there was a possibility for both sides to become friends, the other party was clearly strong, this was a thigh worth trying to hold onto!
“No plans for now, just find a place with fields and water, see you around!”
Zhang Su didn’t say much, drove over the bridge towards the north, leaving the villagers standing on the bridge dazed.
“I’m really surprised, seeing them with men, women, young, old, weak and disabled, I thought they were a soft target, what kind of people are they…”
When the car was out of sight, finally a villager spoke.
“If all their stuff is real, there’s only one possibility… they raided some military camp.”
“Oh my, with so many people in a military camp, wouldn’t it be full of zombies?”
“No kidding… it’s crazy to rob these people, Village Chief Ma, don’t tell me that 600 pounds of grain has to be shared!”
Similar to the situation in Shuwa Village, West Camp Village absorbed many survivors and grain from nearby villages, distribution of resources was highly complex, no one wanted to bear the loss like today.
“Old Qiu, do you not understand what overcoming difficulties together means, after you agreed to merge into West Camp Village there’s no us or them, why are you being so petty with me?”
“Exactly, if we hadn’t taken in your Baihe Village people back then, you probably would have all kicked the bucket!”
“Don’t forget where your bread is buttered!”
Upon hearing this, West Camp Village immediately started to argue back, clucking and quacking on the bridge…
Zhang Su couldn’t hear the villagers’ quarrel on the other side, he was gazing in a daze at a high-speed train stopped on the railway bridge.
“This is… too hopeless.”
From twenty or thirty meters away, everyone in the car could see the situation on the high-speed train, zombies wandering through the compartments, the silent train filled with the scent of death, just lying on the tracks, if nothing unexpected happened, not a single person survived the whole train.
“This must be the high-speed train to Beijing… damn, a real-life Train to Busan, no, this is Beijing Train.” Wu Lue said with a twisted mouth.
“Let’s go…”
Slowly passing under the railway bridge, even though accustomed to life and death, everyone can’t help but put themselves in the train, it’s hard to imagine the situation in the compartments at that time, the despair of being besieged by zombies must have been etched in their bones.
“Stay alert, we’re entering the town ahead!”
Zhang Su shook his head, casting those negative emotions out of his mind.
Continuing forward, they entered a place called Beidong Town, where the streets were lined with closely packed shops. However, all of them had been looted and ransacked. Even the shops selling electric scooters were in chaos, not worth stopping to scavenge for supplies.
“Something’s not right here…”
Zhang Su slowed the car and glanced at the sides of the street, saying to the people inside the vehicle, “Don’t you guys think this town is eerily quiet?”
“Yeah, we used to see some zombies along the road, but it’s completely empty as we enter the town,” Zhong Xiaoshan also felt something was off.
Yuwen added, “The towns around Qin City usually have 30 to 50 villages, with populations ranging from 30,000 to 80,000. Based on our infection analysis, there should be at least 20,000 zombies in Beidong Town, maybe as many as 50,000 to 60,000. Even if they’re scattered across villages, the town shouldn’t be this silent…”
“Could it be… that the locals have killed all the zombies?” Zheng Xinyu asked incredulously.
Zhang Su shook his head, “That’s too difficult, unless…”
As their vehicle reached the middle of the main street, the roar of a farm tractor suddenly echoed in Zhang Su’s ears. Moments later, he saw two tractors loaded with lumber blocking the road ahead, sealing off the path completely.
Not only that, but as soon as the tractors stopped, four people swiftly jumped out from the driver’s seats. They deftly stretched out a rough nail strip across the street, not as polished as a police-grade one, but those long nails were certainly intimidating!
If it were just the two broken tractors, Zhang Su might have considered using the car’s weight and power to break through, but the nail strip on the ground quickly made him abandon the thought.
Each nail was about as long as an adult’s index finger, and even with the RV’s puncture-proof tires, it wouldn’t withstand this. Where could they even find such specially sized tires now?
“Brother Su, they’re surrounding us from behind too!”
Zhang Su had just stopped the car when he saw more than a dozen agricultural tricycles slowly emerging from the sides of the street behind them. Each tricycle carried two young men in addition to the driver.
Each of these people held weapons, various farming tools, machetes, and some had self-made crossbows slung over their shoulders. There were also shadows of homemade firearms!
Soon, the dozen-plus tricycles surrounded the three vehicles. Their practiced approach was indicative of experienced perpetrators, making West Camp Village seem much more mild in comparison.
“We’re wrapped up like dumplings here, haha.”
Looking at the ambush from both sides, Zhang Su couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Damn it, can’t we catch a break on this journey?”
Looking through the window at the people approaching, Zhao Dezhu felt deeply frustrated. They were just trying to find a place to settle, why was it so hard?
“It’s all for survival, but they shouldn’t have messed with us…” Zhang Su shrugged, rolled down the car window, and greeted the apparent leader as they drew near, “Sir, what’s the meaning of this?”
“Isn’t it obvious? It’s a robbery, blocking the road and claiming these three vehicles for United Village!”
The man appeared to be in his early forties, seemingly more amiable compared to someone like Ma Changshou from West Camp Village. He looked like he would be easy to talk to, but his appearance was deceiving, as his first words were unusually domineering.
Zhang Su glanced over the individuals holding long-range weapons and saw that they appeared unbothered, with no intention of taking action. He scratched his chin and said, “United Village, a group of villages banding together for robbery, doesn’t it cause issues in distributing the loot?”
The leader frowned, “You’re awfully chatty. Hurry up and get out of the car before we have to take action. We can all make a fortune peacefully without unnecessary bloodshed!”
“West Camp Village, guarding the bridge at Chuhai River, only charges a toll per person. You guys from United Village are impressive, stripping us bare. Give you everything, how are we supposed to survive?”
Zhang Su inquired calmly.
“West Camp Village? Those guys are fools, not even utilizing the bridge properly. Fortunately, they only charge tolls, or else we’d be left with nothing,” the leader responded.
“How you survive is your concern, but I can point you in a direction. United Village is always in need of laborers. Men can work on the farms and earn food through labor points!”
The leader, smugly bearing a homemade crossbow, proudly spoke, reminiscent of a God offering mercy to mankind.
“And the women?”
Zhang Su curiously asked.
The leader glanced back at his men and chuckled, “Women are easier; they can be brides to our bachelor brothers. Plenty of fun and food, ha ha!”
“Alright, ha ha ha!”
The leader’s words stirred some enthusiasm among the villagers, though many seemed indifferent, showing little interest.
“Ha ha ha…”
Zhang Su joined them in laughter, while subtly reaching for the walkie-talkie beside him. Grinning, he said, “Switch to semi-automatic mode, aim and prepare to fire on my command!”
