Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person - Chapter 306 - 255: Simple Contact

Zhang Su walked out of the courtyard, got on the small electric scooter parked nearby, and headed straight for the mountain gate.
“Who is it?”
From afar, Zhang Su could already see Wang Xin and Lü Leiyang arguing with people outside the iron gate.
“Brother Su, they say they are from some Qin City Survivor Alliance!”
Lü Leiyang turned around and replied.
“Yes, brother, we came from Qin City, indeed from the Survivor Alliance. I am the director of the Vanguard Corps. Earlier, we heard about an explosion here, the sky was lit up with flames, so we came to check, with no ill intentions. We also hoped to inquire about some matters from you!”
Just after Lü Leiyang finished speaking, a deep voice could be heard loudly from outside the iron gate.
Zhang Su got off the electric scooter, stood on the simple watchtower over three meters high, and looked out. Sure enough, Zhang Xin and several familiar faces were among them…
His gaze mostly lingered on the leading middle-aged man, whose firm facial contours and strong build were unmistakable, clearly not an ordinary role given his position as the director of the Vanguard Corps. He was far superior in charisma, physique, and demeanor compared to the carefree Zhang Xin beside him…
Of course, Zhang Xin also recognized Zhang Su’s voice. Seeing him, his heart was filled with mixed emotions, but he was clever enough to know that exposing their relationship now would be unwise, so he pretended not to know him.
“We just battled with a group of enemies, killing dozens, there’s nothing to see and no mood to host you, you should leave.”
Zhang Su waved his hand uninterested.
No one knows how Zhang Xin will report to those above when he returns. It’s surprising that they specifically sent a director to lead an investigation. He guessed that the Survivor Alliance people were searching nearby after passing Beidong Town, otherwise, they wouldn’t have heard the explosion!
“Killed dozens… Does this guy take us for fools?”
“Exactly, just spouting nonsense there.”
“Don’t talk nonsense!”
“What’s there to be afraid of, he can’t hear us.”
In the darkness, several people whispered to each other, believing their voices were small enough, but unfortunately, they didn’t know every word had reached the ears of the other party.
Zhang Su shrugged, not in the mood to fuss over these trivial matters now. Just after experiencing a battle, Celestial Horse Island was low on energy. Engaging in conflict with the Survivor Alliance would be unwise; he just wanted to quickly send these people away.
“My surname is Gong, what’s yours, brother?”
Gong Chengming didn’t give up and asked urgently.
“Zhang.” Zhang Su, somewhat fatigued, pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Brother Zhang, we truly mean no offense. If there’s anything you need help with, we can lend a hand. We just wish to inquire about some matters, hoping for some leniency.”
Leniency, such words since the apocalypse, Zhang Su heard for the first time, suddenly feeling as if dreaming of the old days…
“Ask away, ask away, I won’t be serving you tea. One question, one gun, costs charged only after answering!”
Zhang Su spoke disinterestedly.
“Hey, what’s with you… Call out whoever’s in charge here!”
A man in a bulletproof vest seemed unable to tolerate it, pointing at Zhang Su and chastising.
“He is the boss here. Are you done yet? Hurry with your questions; there’s a ton of post-battle aftermath awaiting!”
When the opposing underling spoke, Wang Xin retorted unyieldingly too. At such times, one couldn’t let the boss respond directly to the underlings, it would be beneath his dignity.
“I see Brother Zhang is busy. I have just one question; once asked, I’ll leave, according to your price. I trust you!”
Gong Chengming raised his hand to stop his subordinate, nodding towards Zhang Su positioned above.
“Alright, ask away.”
“Have you seen a Jinbei van? Two men were on it; one has a scarred face surname Duan, and the other is a young paraplegic man surname Fu.”
Just as Zhang Su expected, their question relates to Fu Weijun.
He squinted his eyes as if looking at Gong Chengming, in reality, focusing on Zhang Xin. After several interactions, some tacit understanding formed between them. He noticed Zhang Xin moving his lower jaw sideways as if grinding teeth…
“Haven’t seen it.”
Zhang Su decided to trust Zhang Xin, cooperating with him in acting out a scenario.
Finishing his speech, he saw Gong Chengming furrow his brows, apparent vexation lingering between them, then turning to look at Zhang Xin behind them. Zhang Xin shrugged and spread his arms, seemingly saying: You never believe me…
“Brother Zhang, you guard the pathway to Qing County, if a Jinbei van passed from the outer provincial road, wouldn’t you know?”
Unwilling to let go, Gong Chengming reconfirmed.
“We just wish to live quietly here. External matters don’t concern me; I have no leisure to focus on so many things.” Zhang Su slowly said.
“Brother Su, I need to make a trip out.”
At this point, Lu Yubo’s voice sounded from behind. He was driving a Cyan Dragon Corps pickup truck. Naturally, on the truck were the bodies of Cyan Dragon Corps members who perished here.
Zombie corpses could be burned as coal, but human bodies could not; they needed timely disposal.
“Open the gate!”
With a command, Wang Xin and Lü Leiyang busily opened the main gate.
The Survivor Alliance people sensibly moved aside. When they saw the dead bodies in the truck bed, they finally realized the formidable nature of this safe haven.
“Alright, Brother Zhang, I keep my word, here’s an LS5 submachine gun, catch.”
Gong Chengming was generous, taking the weapon strapped over his shoulder and tossing it to Zhang Su.
Pa.
Zhang Su caught it steadily in his hand; it was his first time handling a submachine gun, he looked at it with interest, saying: “Ah, 9mm bullets? We don’t have them, send some bullets!”
Unable to resist twitching the corner of his mouth, Gong Chengming pulled out three magazines from behind his waist, handed them to his companion, saying: “Not many bullets carried, just these three spare magazines, all yours!”
Zhang Su received the magazines and nodded contentedly; he learned from Duan Wuhu that the Survivor Alliance was notorious for conducting live human zombie transformation experiments, yet the person before him conducted business fairly.
It was evident that within any organization, all kinds of individuals exist.
“It’s late; if there’s any disturbance, please forgive us. We’re leaving!”
Gong Chengming leaned his body forward to take a look inside Celestial Horse Island. Everywhere was a mess, combined with the bodies taken away, one could imagine the battle’s previous brutality. Staying long wouldn’t be wise, and words were unnecessary.
“Hold on…”
Seeing Gong Chengming preparing to leave, Zhang Su suddenly called out: “I also wish to inquire about matters in Qin City, can you answer for free?”
Gong Chengming couldn’t help but twitch the corners of his mouth. Internally remarking this guy is honestly too shrewd, he took a deep breath and nodded: “Brother Zhang, go ahead.”
“Heard over the radio, your alliance has unified the northern Qin City area. I want to know if there are forces like yours still in Qin City?”
Upon hearing Zhang Su’s question, Gong Chengming laughed and waved his hand: “Brother Zhang, the radio exaggerated that. We’re merely a slightly capable survivor organization within Qin City; greater forces than us are plentiful, I know of at least four or five.”
In the darkness, Zhang Su could clearly see Zhang Xin’s peculiar expression, knowing Gong Chengming’s words were false. He actually wished to inquire about Wenhua Road Barracks’ situation, but since true information couldn’t be obtained, he dropped the idea.
“Director Gong is modest, goodbye!”
“Farewell…”
Zhang Su watched as the Survivor Alliance people drove slowly down the mountain.
Gong Chengming sat in the passenger seat, his gaze deep in the darkness. Passing a makeshift road, he saw Lu Yubo throwing dead bodies into pits, rolled down the window, and said: “Young brother, we are from the Survivor Alliance, working hard late at night, here’s a cigarette.”
Saying this, he casually tossed out an unopened pack of cigarettes.
Clatter.
Lu Yubo failed to catch them; the cigarettes landed on the field path. He turned to look at the man who extended his arm through the window, waving goodbye. He felt puzzled.
“Why did the Survivor Alliance people commend my hard work, then give me cigarettes…weird, haha, passing up freebies makes one a fool!”
Simple as he was, Lu Yubo didn’t bother contemplating Gong Chengming’s deeper intentions. Picking up the cigarettes from the ground and checking they were unopened, he took one out, lit it up and smoked delightfully. The smoke masked the scent of blood, making work more energizing.
