“Use the binoculars yourself! No wonder it’s so clean along the way, it seems the zombies have all gathered towards the troops!”
Zhang Su looked through the binoculars for a while and then handed them to Zhao Dezhu. He recalled the scene months ago when he saw the passing zombie horde in the city, the horde was like a snowball, and the zombies along the way were like snowflakes, swept along as the snowball rolled past.
He clearly saw in the distance, roughly a mile away, the zombie horde stretched out along the county streets, shoulder to shoulder, moving westward in a crowded manner, with no end in sight. At least twenty thousand zombies appeared in the field of vision, far larger than the horde encountered outside Yileiwen Convenience Store!
And this was just a part of it, it’s unimaginable how large the entire horde might be.
“Hmm, there’s indeed a huge group moving ahead, bro, your eyesight is amazing.”
After a while, Zhao Dezhu withdrew and closed the window.
In the pitch-black sky, the dashboard inside the car emitted a dim light, casting a strange glow on the faces of the people.
Tap-tap, tap-tap.
Zhang Su gently tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, his eyes filled with a troubled expression. He felt this was a golden opportunity, yet he was at a loss on how to seize it.
“Hey, what should we do now?”
Zheng Xinyu noticed Zhang Su’s silence and pinched his neck from the driver’s seat.
“Thinking.”
Zhang Su changed from gently tapping the steering wheel to gripping it tightly. Now, with the zombie army attacking the corps headquarters, the corps would be significantly weakened after resisting the zombies, making it easy to seize the opportunity.
But precisely because of this, conquering them was extremely difficult!
If the Cyan Dragon Corps could withstand this wave of the zombie horde, then the survivors’ cohesion and sense of belonging would be greatly enhanced, making it difficult to take leadership then.
You can strike them when they are down, but cannot conquer the corps members. At least it won’t reach sixty percent!
Missing this opportunity would leave Zhang Su very dissatisfied.
“Bro, I feel something’s off.”
Zhao Dezhu suddenly spoke, his face full of doubt.
“How so?”
“Think about it, if our camp was attacked by a massive zombie horde, what would be the first thing to do?”
“If detected early, definitely divert them.”
Zhang Su answered without hesitation.
“Exactly, even United Village knows to disperse the horde before killing them, why wouldn’t the Cyan Dragon Corps know, hey, Xin Qi, explain!”
Zheng Xinyu said, tapping Xin Qi’s head twice with a baseball bat.
“I, I don’t know…” Xin Qi was bewildered and confused.
“Spit it out, is there a conspiracy? If you don’t talk, I’ll kill you.”
Zhao Dezhu pressed a gun against Xin Qi’s waist.
“Big brother, big sister, I’m just a small soldier in the corps, I know very little about strategic operations, and such matters don’t concern me…”
Xin Qi was almost in tears, honestly, these people overestimated him.
Zhang Su waved his hand, saying, “Don’t embarrass this guy, what he said makes sense. Think about it, would the old sister-in-law from United Village know our situation?”
“Right right… brother is right.”
Xin Qi was grateful, even if he ended up as an old sister-in-law, it didn’t matter.
“So what do we do now?”
Came full circle back to this question.
“Are there any other routes to the barracks?”
Zhang Su decided to watch from the sidelines!
He now hoped for a result, that the Cyan Dragon Corps would be unable to cope, then he could lead people heroically to save them. Of course, the premise is being able to turn the tide; otherwise, just watch them perish…
Xin Qi pointed south, saying, “There’s another route over there, a gate for vehicles on the south side.”
“Let’s go!”
Zhang Su glanced once more at the tail end of the zombie horde, carefully started the car, preparing to transfer south, while informing his companions of his thoughts.
As everyone learned that the Cyan Dragon Corps was suffering a zombie attack, they collectively let out a sigh of relief!
Zombies should have been the common enemy of all humanity, but now the external enemy was dealing with the internal enemy, temporarily making them friends. Unfortunately, this friend lacks reason and only understands slaughter…
“Damn, if anyone could control the horde, they’d be awesome, using modern weaponry while the horde leads, unstoppable!”
Zhao Dezhu fantasized.
Zhang Su glanced at the rearview mirror, smiling, “Zhuzi, that’s a great idea, discuss it with Dr. Fu when we’re back, maybe they can figure out how to control…”
Boom!
Before Zhang Su finished speaking, the convoy had only moved several dozen meters, not even enough time to turn, when a burst of flames lit up the sky ahead, a thunderous sound filled their ears, followed by gunfire sounding like dense raindrops, mixed with two more explosions.
Zhang Su slammed the brakes, stopping the entire convoy in the middle of the road.
“Damn, they started fighting so soon!”
Zhao Dezhu looked at the sky where the firelight suddenly erupted, clenching his fists. Having experienced the zombie horde, he was quite tense.
“Yeah, the battle’s begun!”
Zhang Su frowned. Like everyone else, he couldn’t see the battleground, but he felt the brutality of the battle more directly because the number representing the Cyan Dragon Corps in his mind was decreasing!
Slowly, it went from three hundred and forty-two to three hundred and forty-one.
Not much, just one less, but with a death right as the battle started, it was clear this zombie horde was unusual!
“Let’s not go there yet!”
Zhang Su didn’t continue forward. Since the numbers in his mind could clearly reflect the death toll of the Cyan Dragon Corps, there was no need to risk approaching further.
Everyone got out of the car, some climbed onto the rooftops of the shops beside the street, but unfortunately, the two-story buildings were too low to see the battlefield directly.
Bang, thud, boom, rat-a-tat…
The endless sounds of gunfire and artillery drowned out the zombies’ screams and human shouts. Even a kilometer away, they could feel the intensity of the scene from the occasional blasts of fire.
Suddenly, a look of shock appeared on Zhang Su’s face. He found Fang Daming squatting nearby and asked, “Are you sure the last zombie attack only cost the corps over thirty lives?”
“I’m sure. I was responsible for handling the bodies back then—thirty-two, clear as day… Big brother, I’m not lying to you.” Fang Daming scratched his head, not understanding why Zhang Su asked.
“Got it…”
Zhang Su nodded, his brow furrowed. He doubted Fang Daming’s words because, in short ten minutes, the number representing the Cyan Dragon Corps had sharply reduced to three hundred and one!
During this brief conversation with Fang Daming, two more were lost!
The casualty rate was shocking to Zhang Su. With a sturdy wall and thorough defenses, why were they dying so fast?
Could it be that not everyone died at the hands of zombies?
Zhang Su recalled Liu Lei mentioning faction conflicts, thinking if they still indulged in power struggles during a survival crisis, that faction was courting death.
The Cyan Dragon Corps could face big trouble. He had a wild prediction—if the Cyan Dragon Corps indeed fell and only Xin Qi’s three captives remained, would subduing any one of them complete the challenge?
If true, it would be extremely dramatic.
“Hey, Xinyu, what you said might come true!”
Zhang Su approached Zheng Xinyu, speaking teasingly.
“Huh? What did I say?”
Zheng Xinyu stared dazedly at the flickering sky lights, unable to recall what she said.
“Sis-in-law, you said a walk in the park, bloodless victory, click and deliver.”
Wang Xin eagerly answered beside her.
“Oh, right, yes, I did say that!”
Zheng Xinyu raised her chin proudly.
Bang! Boom.
Just as Zheng Xinyu finished speaking, a flash of light shot from the direction of the military camp towards the northwest, like a meteor across the sky, speeding into a residential area and blasting a big hole in an apartment building…
“Damn, what went astray, a missile?”
Lu Yubo yelled.
“Tank! It’s a tank!”
Zhang Su confirmed, the noise and the tracer looked very much like a tank firing.
“Tank, tank?”
Fang Daming looked puzzled, asking, “It shouldn’t be, there are indeed two tanks in the camp, but it’s said the shells were damp and unusable, right, Xin, Old Song, do you know the situation?”
“If that really was a tank, then Ma Juguang lied to us!”
The man known as Old Song had a complex expression.
Xin Qi shook his head in confusion, “I always thought those two tanks were to crush zombies…”
“Old Song’s right, the high-levels in the corps hid the truth from you, it’s no surprise.” Zhang Su nodded.
Fang Daming smacked his lips, saying, “Then by this logic, now that even hidden strength is being used, things look pretty grim!”
Bang, boom!
During the conversation, another shell fired; at least this time, it didn’t miss, probably had some effect…
“Indeed, not good…”
Zhang Su said softly, looking at the exploding firelight.
With the tank’s participation, the Cyan Dragon Corps’ numbers have reduced to around two hundred and ninety, with over fifty dead!
Logically, most of these fifty should be combat personnel; if true, the remaining combatants in the Cyan Dragon Corps are less than half!
