Chapter 2168: Chapter 2168 Left-Over Poison
— Kat —
The plan was decided… but it wasn’t quite time to leave just yet. First, they had to make a spot for Lily to hide in. The room was filled with shadows that meant they had options, but in the end, Kat and Lily decided it was best to be extra safe. For Kat it was mostly about that safety but for Lily, it was more about the fact this gave her a place to lay down without worry.
Furen felt a bit useless again, but she found a spot on the stairs to relax on and tried her best to ignore the sounds of grinding stone. Lily and Kat had chosen a nice spot up above the door in the corner, specifically the top corner opposite to the wall they’d already opened up. When things quieted down a bit, Furen yelled out to relay something she’d noticed. “Did we decide if we were putting the golems limbs back together or not?”
Kat and Lily looked at each other. Lily from her slightly too small perch, and Kat from the ground. “No…?” Lily nodded from the perch. She was sort of stuck leaning half over. There was theoretically plenty of space for her in the little nook they’d carved out but realistically it didn’t fit her horns so she couldn’t actually get inside.
“Do you have a suggestion?” asked Kat as she glanced back at Lily, trying to work out if her girlfriend was about to fall down or not. She wasn’t sure, mostly because neither was Lily. In theory there was no reason she’d fall, but they both just felt like she was about to. It was a weird thing to experience.
“Not really,” answered Furen. “I mean… yeah no not really? I guess my big thing would be, if they can get past the door they can probably get past the golem but does that mean it’s better to keep its limbs or not?”
*Thoughts?*
[I have no thoughts.]
*Well that’s just patently untrue.*
[I guess… but I really have no idea. I think we’re best off taking them. I’m a lot more worried about fighting the golem again then I am about fighting off intruders. Maybe if I wasn’t waiting around to guard things I’d suggest giving them back but as it stands I think we’re fine.]
*Alright.* “With Lily on guard it’s probably best to keep the arms. Lily thinks, and I agree, that the golem is a far bigger worry then even a group of people. So assuming they can get past the door, it would be better for Lily to try and take them down rather then rely on the chance they can’t also bypass the golem,” said Kat.
Furen shrugged, then realised that they couldn’t see her from where she was sitting. “That’s fine then. Not sure what else to DO with that metal, but I’m sure someone can figure something out.”
Kat and Lily nodded, once again not that they could really see each other, but the sound of grinding rock starting up once again not longer afterwards got the point across. It took a bit of time to widen the small gap in such a way that Lily could easily slip inside even with her horns but it wasn’t all that much extra time to make it a bit taller.
Kat helped a bit with that, but mostly stayed on the ground, allowing Lily to use Kat’s eyes to see how hidden the little alcove was… and the answer happened to be ’very’. The way the wall curved in that spot, and why they’d chosen it, was that if you were too close to the door it just looked like any other part of the wall. There wasn’t any way to see there was a gap. Better yet, as you got further back and closer to the stairs, you still couldn’t see anything because there were a few bits of the wall and ceiling that stuck out just enough to block the view of the little nook.
Granted, the view from the stairs wasn’t entirely perfect. If you angled your head just right and hung round the corner while leaving yourself slightly elevated you MIGHT be able to make something out, but the fact you had to perform such an obscure set of actions just to MAYBE see something in the cave, which was quite dark without Kat’s flames lighting it, well it seemed like they’d done a pretty good job all in all.
Once it was done though, it was time to split up. Kat gave Lily a long hug as well as a few kissed before Lily pulled away. [Not that I don’t love the affection, but you DO need to leave if you want to make it out of here before dinner time. I’ll be fine.] Kat dashed forward to give Lily one more kiss on the nose before hopping backwards and starting to walk towards the stairs.
*I know. I guess it just doesn’t feel right to leave you behind like this even if it’s for the best. At least we have the bond I suppose. God we’d be such messes if we didn’t have it.*
[I’m not sure that’s true. I love the bond don’t get me wrong, and I’d never turn it down but it’s probably made it so we like being separated even less because we’re so closely connected. It makes it hard to ignore the fact we’re not in the same place, or have our minds wander to other topics… because we can always feel each other.]
*Hmmm… that does sound like something we’re supposed to be annoyed about.*
[Yeah probably, but I guess you can feel that I probably consider it a bit of a plus. It’s… nice to spend so much time together… BUT we agreed to this already, now off you go.]
*Yes dear.* Agreed Kat as she rolled her eyes and headed for the stairs. Furen stood up as Kat passed her and was soon following along as well. Backtracking was a smoother experience. They weren’t hounded by golems along the way, and the remains of the lightning golems had long since stopped sparking. Even better, the flames from the standard golems had gone out.
Kat did check before walking through the area, mostly just by asking, “So it’s not hot here still?”
“It is perhaps a little warmer standing here but no, nothing like before,” answered Furen. Kat did have to give her a pointed stare for a few seconds but when Furen could hold it without issue, Kat continued forward, though with an ear out for Furen’s hear to see if it spiked with adrenaline as she stepped through the area… but it seemed fine. Nothing seemed to change at all, so Kat just had to accept that it was fine.
Still, with the latest fire not burning anymore it was little surprise that the rest of them had all burnt out as well once they arrived at them. So Kat didn’t even bother to stop to double checking things with Furen. Still keeping an ear out of course, but just running through those areas otherwise. When they got to the exit, Kat did check the necklace and it was still glowing… though she did realise a slight issue. “Oh… I’m going to have to lift the fountain myself…”
“Are you incapable?” asked Furen.
“No… it’s just super awkward and probably part of the reason it now lets poison in. Anyway we know it can lift all the way off and be put back down without the poison just flooding in so… let’s go. I’ll run up first and I’m sure you can hear when I get started,” commented Kat.
Furen gave a nod that Kat took as acceptance and she made her way up to the fountain base. Getting into position and keeping a careful eye on the stairs so as not to fall through these ones as well, Kat pushed the fountain above her upwards. Luckily these stairs didn’t so much as creak while Furen made her way outside.
Kat was up soon after. It was a little awkward in the way she went about it, basically needing to allow her arm to get trapped for a moment before turning into water but everything else she could think of would’ve just been more annoying.
When Kat reformed, she could see Furen glancing around the place, rather obviously. “You alright?”
“I thought I heard something. Well, no, I’m sure I heard something I’m just trying to work out if it is something worth worrying about. I can’t hear anything else other than the wind… and that seems a bit odd. It sounded like there might have been something, or someone close by…” mumbled Furen.
“I can go check it out?” offered Kat.
Furen shook her head. “No best not to. I don’t know if they can hear us talking but if they can’t… well best to not alert them that way know.”
“Right… but… hmm…” Kat wanted to say she didn’t want to just leave them for Lily to deal with but obviously she couldn’t say that out loud. What to do.
