First Immortal of the Sword - Chapter 2772 - Destiny’s Appointed

Chapter 2772 – Destiny’s Appointed
The River of Destiny, outside Blue Peak Port.
Su Yi sat cross-legged on a blood-red Daoist platform, hovering over the waters of the River of Destiny. No matter how the waves washed over him, he didn’t budge.
This was a platform that Lu Hongpao had condensed with a secret technique. It could obscure Su Yi’s presence and prevent him from being washed away in the current.
Lu Hongpao brought Su Yi here, told him that someone would come to escort him to the Literati Continent, then left.
Su Yi had nothing better to do, so he just sat down, crossed his legs, drank, and replayed his experiences in the Blue Peak Continent’s Huaihuang Empire.
His cultivation base had advanced. He was now in the mid-stage Unfettered Realm, but he was still quite a distance from reaching the late stage.
Within his sea of consciousness, the suppressed Divine Hunt Edict’s power had dissipated, but its truths remained. He could take his time to contemplate and ponder them later.
Su Yi had already witnessed the Edict’s terrifying power, and he’d naturally take it seriously.
Lu Hongpao had already sealed the renamed Peach Blossom. She said that if he ran into lethal danger, he could break the seal. It would save his life.
However, doing so would reveal his identity, so she urged him to carefully weigh the consequences first.
Su Yi naturally wasn’t concerned. He had plenty of life-saving trump cards; he naturally didn’t need Peach Blossom.
But Su Yi agreed with Lu Hongpao’s advice.
On this trip to the Literati Continent, he’d take on a new identity and disguise his features. Thus, he’d decided to seal all of the treasures he’d used before, not just Peach Blossom.
He’d also set aside all of the Laws and powers of the Grand Dao he’d used before.
He was planning to take on an entirely different identity and lie low.
No other Eternal could have disguised themselves so thoroughly, because there was no changing one’s Eternal Laws. No matter how much you changed your appearance, one look at your Eternal Dao Root would reveal your true identity.
But Su Yi was different. He had no need to worry about this problem.
His foundations in the Grand Dao were condensed out of the Epoch Spark and could incorporate all Daos.
He could, for instance, make the Grand Dao of Profound Ruin his foundations, and no one would be able to tell it hadn’t always been that way.
Three years? That’s not long at all. I can use this time to calm my heart and get a better feel for the Eternal Heavens Domain, thought Su Yi.
It was important to consider the long term.
Lu Hongpao had warned him about numerous other things, too. Far too many people in the Eternal Heavens Domain wanted Su Yi dead.
Given his current strength, he was far from capable of contending with them. Thus, his best choice was to hide his edge, focus on his cultivation, and strengthen himself.
It’s a pity that I never got the chance to scour the battlefield for spoils. Su Yi sighed to himself.
The boy in green, the spirit of Peach Blossom, had slaughtered a whole group of Heavenly Monarchs outside the Huaihuang Empire.
But time had been so tight afterward that Su Yi never got the chance to gather their belongings. Looking back on it now, it was indeed a crying shame.
After all, he’d burned through all of his cultivation resources in the Huaihuang Empire. He’d even used up most of his Eternal Essence Gold; he had less than a hundred pieces left.
Once more, Su Yi understood the phrase, “Not even a clever wife can cook without rice.”
He was truly broke.
Or he would have been, if not for the storage treasure Lu Hongpao had given him. It was full of cultivation resources.
After taking inventory, Su Yi concluded that at his current rate, these would only sustain him for half a year or so.
A voice came from behind Su Yi. “I wouldn’t have thought that red-robed man was really Lu Hongpao.”
It came from a jade pendant the size of an infant’s fist. The image of a black sheep appeared on its surface. The speaker was none other than Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep.
When Su Yi left the Huaihuaing Empire, she’d already awakened from dormancy.
Part of why Su Yi was so fearless in the face of Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan was that his first incarnation’s heart devil had left his mark on Peach Blossom.
Then there was Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep.
But Lu Hongpao’s arrival meant that he hadn’t needed to put either hidden card into play.
“Have you regained any of your memories?” asked Su Yi.
Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep sighed. “I’m not going to be able to remember anything unless I break my seal.”
Her voice was full of bitterness.
“How are your wounds?” asked Su Yi.
On their way to the River of Destiny, something suddenly happened to her. A major problem arose in her powers of the Grand Dao, leaving her no choice but to go dormant.
“I just barely managed to protect my Grand Dao source energies,” said Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep. “If you could gather some Heavenly Sovereign-level recovery medicine, it might well help me heal.”
Su Yi rolled his eyes. “You think too highly of me.”
But then, his heart shook. Wait, don’t tell me Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep was really a Heavenly Sovereign?
If not, why would she need such high-level recovery medicine?
This is no joke. Different levels of medicine have completely different effects.
If an Unfettered Realm cultivator took a pill designed for a Heavenly Sovereign, they’d effectively just be committing suicide. They wouldn’t be able to withstand such intense medicinal power!
“Don’t you know Lu Hongpao? Why not thicken your face and ask her for some?” said Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep as if it were perfectly just and righteous.
Su Yi took a sip of wine, then shook his head. “I fear nothing more than owing others favors. Lu Hongpao is only looking out for me because of her connection with Jiang Wuchen.
“No bond exists between her and me outside that, so if I really take her as my good brother and demand benefits without reservations, she’ll look down on me. I won’t acquire anything, either.”
The black sheep sighed. “Then there’s nothing for it. I’ll just have to take my time and recover slowly. I’ll have to go dormant again. Who knows how long it’ll take for me to make a full recovery…?”
Su Yi rubbed his forehead. “Should the opportunity arise, I’ll help you gather some suitable recovery medicine.”
Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep smiled. “That’s how a man ought to talk! Right, once I go dormant, you are not permitted to examine my medallion with your divine sense!”
With that, the sheep of mysterious origins sank back into dormancy.
Su Yi still didn’t know who she was or just how high her cultivation base was. All he knew for certain was that with her around, it’d be easy for Old Lord Gouchen to find him one day.
That might have seemed dangerous, but in truth, with his first incarnation’s heart devil around, there was no need to worry even if Old Lord Gouchen did come looking for him.
Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep had accompanied him since he’d left the God Domain. They argued frequently, but there was no denying that she’d always come to his aid in times of need.
For instance, when Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan threatened him, Su Yi didn’t even need to ask for help. She offered it of her own accord.
Thus, Su Yi saw her as one of his own.
“Senior!”
Suddenly, a snow-white toad the size of a millstone appeared in the churning river water.
It rode on a wave and said with obvious delight, “What a coincidence! We meet again!”
Su Yi recognized it at a glance. He couldn’t help but be surprised. “You aren’t simple, toad. You actually saw through Lu Hongpao’s platform to find me!”
Su Yi paused, then asked with great interest, “But why call me ‘senior’?”
He still vividly recalled their last meeting. The toad had rushed in, seething with murderous intent. It obviously planned to hurt them.
But then, it abruptly changed its mind. More than that, it gave them each a Toad Palace Osmanthus Fruit.
“Senior, you carry that supreme Daoist scripture, the Book of Destiny. It’s a symbol, like a ruler’s jade scepter. In my eyes, you’re even more illustrious than the Heavenly Sovereigns of the Eternal Heavens Domain!” said the snow-white toad, its gaze fervent and pious.
The Book of Destiny!
A supreme Daoist scripture? Su Yi recalled the yellowed scroll Xiao Jian had left behind.
His first incarnation’s heart devil confirmed its mysteriousness. Apparently, there were several different names for it. The Book of Destiny was one of them!
Su Yi pondered briefly, then said, “To be honest, I don’t know much about the Book of Destiny. Have you… perhaps misjudged the situation?”
The toad shook its head. “There’s no way this is a misunderstanding. Every living thing born of the waters of the River of Destiny has a secret true name.
“These true names are recorded in the Book of Destiny prior to our birth. When the Book of Destiny appears, we can immediately sense its presence!”
It paused, then continued, “And in our eyes, the one who carries the Book of Destiny is Destiny’s Appointed! Like an official presiding over our lives and deaths, no different from the ‘king of heaven’ that mortals believe in!”
Su Yi’s eyebrows rose. Really?
The River of Destiny was enormous. No one knew where it began, and no one knew where it ended. Its boundless, flowing waters were home to countless strange lifeforms.
Were all of these lifeforms bound to Destiny’s Appointed?
Su Yi mulled that over. “So if, say, I wanted you to die, I could do so easily?”
The toad froze, then broke out in cold sweats. It stammered, “What did I do to anger you so, Senior?”
Su Yi waved dismissively. “Nothing. I’m just making conversation, that’s all. Just answer the question.”
The toad still looked nervous. It said tentatively, “Senior, if you want to kill me, all you have to do is open the Book of Destiny and find my true name. Then, I’ll be a fish on the chopping block, and you can slaughter me as you see fit.”
Su Yi instantly understood. To denizens of the river’s depths, the Book of Destiny is like the Yama Kings’ book of life and death.
If I want to kill one, all I have to do is find their true name, and their life will be in my hands.
But it’s a pity…
He still hadn’t figured out how to open the yellowed scroll. He hadn’t gotten an opportunity to peruse its contents or learn its secrets. He naturally couldn’t find the white toad’s true name.
The toad was overcome with terror. It prostrated itself on the waves, not daring to move. Inwardly, it regretted having come here in the first place. What was I thinking? Trying to meet Destiny’s Appointed was just too reckless.
At the very least, I should have prepared some generous greeting gifts first!
Few will strike a smiling face. If I’d come bearing gifts, how could Destiny’s Appointed have asked all those questions about killing me?
Life in the Jianghu isn’t all about fighting and killing. You have to understand the ways of the world!
Coming here without a gift was totally brainless!
No, this won’t do. I have to fix this!
The toad steeled itself and decided to make a gamble.
If I’m going to give him a gift, it’s got to be the best!
Even if it’s the thing I treasure almost as much as life itself!
