Chapter 2835 – A Heavenly Sovereign Cleans Up the Mess
Wu Yu had only just issued orders, and the experts of Limitless Palace were just about to take action when a woman’s voice rang out.
“Is this how the lofty Limitless Palace conducts itself? You couldn’t defeat your opponent, so you’re venting your fury on the innocent? What prestige! What comportment!”
The crowd was instantly in uproar. All of them recognized the speaker as Eternal Lightning Court’s Xia Rouyun, a charmer famed throughout the Five Great Continents.
She stood there, dress swaying around her and starry eyes flashing. She made no attempt to disguise the mockery in her voice.
“When we get back to the Five Great Continents, I’ll be sure to spread the word. I’ll make sure the whole world knows that Limitless Palace is the grandest, mightiest Heavenly Sovereign faction of all!”
Wu Yu’s expression darkened, but he couldn’t be bothered to argue with a junior, so he turned his wrath on Heavenly Monarch Jin Xun. “Daoist Brother Jin Xun, does Eternal Lightning Court intend to intervene?”
The message was clear: “Mind your disciple’s manners and stay out of other people’s business or else you’ll become our enemies, too!”
Heavenly Monarch Jin Xun was initially somewhat displeased that Xia Rouyun had stepped forth to stir up trouble, but Wu Yu’s threats enraged him. He couldn’t help but laugh coldly, “Even juniors look down on your conduct. Who are you to chastise me, Wu Yu?”
Silence descended over the crowd. Everyone exchanged glances. None of them had anticipated that Limitless Palace would run into such an obstacle when they tried to settle the score. But no one dared to say anything, because both Limitless Palace and Eternal Lightning Court were Heavenly Sovereign factions!
Wu Yu’s expression darkened. He glowered at Heavenly Monarch Jin Xun and said, “Bad enough that your juniors don’t understand the ways of the world, but it seems their elders are senile, too!”
With that, he waved his sleeve. “Attack!”
But just as the experts of Limitless Palace were about to take action, Dong Liujia stepped forth. “Seniors, every debt has its debtor. This grudge is between Su Yi and us. Why implicate the innocent?”
The crowd was stunned. Dong Liujia was the heaven-defying monster in fifth place in the Unfettered Ranking, as well as a member of Limitless Palace. Who could have imagined he’d step forth and object at a time like this? All eyes were instantly on him.
Wu Yu and the other Limitless Palace experts’ expressions were ashen as could be, unsightly to the extreme.
They could disregard anyone else’s objections; Limitless Palace had never concerned itself with how others felt. But Dong Liujia was one of their own, yet he’d stepped forward to criticize them in front of a crowd. How could they not be furious?
“Dong Liujia! Do you realize how many of our sectmates died because of Su Yi?” shouted Wu Yu. “I didn’t see you losing your temper over your apprentice siblings’ deaths, nor did I see you take action when your seniors died, yet here you are, trying to stop us from punishing hostile factions. You’re… simply disloyal and unfilial!”
His voice boomed like thunder.
Dong Liujia stiffened. He lowered his head and said gravely, “If we attack the innocent without scruples, who’s to say Su Yi won’t do the same thing another day?”
He took a deep breath, then looked up and met Wu Yu’s gaze. “I don’t object to seeking revenge. Rather, I’m opposed to punishing so many people who had nothing to do with this! Doing so… will only hurt Limitless Palace!”
“You…” Wu Yu was so angry that he felt as if his lungs might burst. Were Dong Liujia any other disciple, he’d have slapped him to death a long time ago. But Dong Liujia was different. He had a powerful backer, and Heavenly Sovereign Wen admired him deeply!
“I’ve said everything I have to say. That’s my stance on the matter, but if you insist, as a mere Unfettered Realm disciple, I naturally cannot stop you. Do as you see fit!”
With that, Dong Liujia took a step back.
The crowd witnessed the entire exchange. All of them were impressed.
Wu Yu’s expression darkened, but before he could say anything, yet another voice rang out. “I think Fellow Daoist Dong is absolutely right.”
Boom!
The crowd stirred, because this time, the speaker was someone none of them had anticipated—the princess of the Moon Palace, Lian Yue! Even her Dao Protector, Granny Snake, was unwittingly stunned. She wouldn’t have guessed her charge would say something so shocking.
Wu Yu and the other old-timers of Limitless Palace glowered, all of them incomparably furious.
But Lian Yue just continued calmly, “Su Yi infiltrated the Literati Continent under the pseudonym Li Muchen. Neither Blueleaf Sword Sect nor Light Beam Sword Pavilion knew his true identity. Don’t you think punishing the two sects because of their connection to Su Yi would be far too unfair?”
She paused, then said, “What if Su Yi disguises himself and infiltrates Limitless Palace next? Would you cleanse any member of Limitless Palace who got close to him?”
The crowd’s expressions shifted.
Anyone here could theoretically have spoken up out of a sense of justice. They’d have had plenty to say, including much that hadn’t been touched on yet. But who dared? Who wasn’t afraid of Limitless Palace’s reprisal?
That was why Lian Yue’s decision to speak up was so extraordinary.
“Aren’t you going to tell her off, Granny Snake?” Wu Yu shouted.
Granny Snake had a complicated look on her face, but she just sighed. “It’s not like the heavens will come crashing down if we let the juniors voice their true thoughts.”
Wu Yu gnashed his teeth. “Then I’ll just ask you this. Is the Court of the Southern Heavens going to stand in our way?”
Granny Snake shook her head.
Lian Yue pursed her lips in silence. She was, ultimately, just a junior. She couldn’t change anything, nor could she represent her entire sect. Especially since the Court of the Southern Heavens had lost numerous members in the battle in the Ancient Nine Luminaries City, too.
Wu Yu’s gaze was dark and imposing as he scanned the crowd. “Does anyone else object? If so, go ahead and step forth! Let’s see whether or not you can convince us to take a step back!”
He’d effectively made it clear that Limitless Palace was dead-set on punishing Blueleaf Sword Sect and Light Beam Sword Pavilion.
Dong Liujia, Lian Yue, and Xia Rouyun sighed.
The others’ hearts sank. These are the foundations of a Heavenly Sovereign faction. It doesn’t matter whether they’re reasonable or not. You have to obey. If you dare to intervene or interfere, you might well die, too!
The Heavenly Monarch factions of the Literati Continent were as silent as cicadas in winter.
Yun Qiaojun, Liu Tianchen, and Wen Xiuran couldn’t help but recall something.
Earlier, in the face of Wu Xun’s threats, Xiao Chi decided to step back. He’d provided an ample reason for this decision, too—he couldn’t afford to offend Wu Xun. If he did, he wouldn’t be the only one to die. His seniors, sectmates, friends, and family would be cleansed, too!
Heavenly Sovereign factions didn’t care whether they were being reasonable or not, and they weren’t interested in investigating to prove whether someone was really guilty or not.
Xiao Chi even teased the others, saying that they’d soon see for themselves whether the Heavenly Sovereign factions listened to reason when it came time to seek retribution.
Now, they could only watch as Limitless Palace cleansed Light Beam Sword Pavilion and the Blueleaf Sword Leaf, as if fate were conspiring to prove Xiao Chi right.
Yun Qiaojun and the others felt deeply conflicted. Can Heavenly Sovereign factions really just do whatever they want with no regard for right and wrong or the rule of law?
Bu Meng of Light Beam Sword Pavilion hadn’t said anything in all this time. He just stood there, like a condemned convict awaiting execution.
But then, a voice suddenly rang out. “I object.”
The voice wasn’t loud, and it sounded casual, yet everyone heard every word clearly.
The crowd was stunned.
Wu Yu completely lost his temper. “Which blind fool has decided to speak out this time? Roll on over here and let me get a good look at you!”
The other experts of Limitless Palace seethed with murderous intent. Since when did so many people dare to disregard Limitless Palace?
A red-robed figure floated into view. He was tall and thin, with one hand resting on the hilt of his sword, the other stroking his fair jaw.
“Here I am. Do you have anything else you’d like to say?” the red-robed man asked with a laugh.
Silence descended over the crowd. Everyone was bewildered. Who is this guy?
Wu Yu sensed that something wasn’t right here. His eyes narrowed. “Tell me your name. Limitless Palace doesn’t kill nameless nobodies!”
“They call me Su Yi,” said the man in red.
No one knew what to say to that.
Wu Yu glared. “Are you really trying to get yourself killed?
The red-robed man laughed. “That’s right. Come on and kill me! If you can’t, I’ll just have to kill you instead.”
He stood there as if there were no one else around, his red robes fluttering in the wind like billowing tides of blood. It was a shocking sight. The most astonishing part was his sheer composure. He wasn’t the least bit intimidated by the numerous experts of Limitless Palace!
Wu Yu’s face filled with uncertainty. He could tell that something wasn’t right about this unexpected interloper.
“How boring,” the red-robed man said with a deep sigh. “You missed your chance to die by my hand. That’s something most people can only long for but never receive.”
The crowd was increasingly at a loss.
Before they could come to their senses, the red-robed man said, “Lian Luo, you kill him. I’ll only dirty my hands if I do it myself.”
“Yes, Master!”
A voice rang out, and a ten-foot-tall, stalwart figure appeared out of nowhere. He had rough-hewn features and a blood-red lotus emblem at the center of his forehead.
As soon as he appeared, he gave Wu Yu a big thumbs up. “You’re the first person to ever tell my master to ‘roll on over.’ Out of respect for your courage, I’ll hang your head in an elevated place of honor on the burial mound of White Sparrow Tower!”
The crowd stirred; all of them recognized this new arrival.
Yao Monarch Lian Luo, the master of White Sparrow Tower and a supreme, unparalleled bandit of the Yao Path!
And there was only one person Yao Monarch Lian Luo would ever refer to as his master. The Red-Robed Heavenly Sovereign, Lu Hongpao!
Wu Yu reacted as if struck by lightning. He was completely flabbergasted.
The other Limitless Palace experts froze like wooden chickens. All of them felt chills in their hands and feet.
Lu Hongpao was the most unfathomable of the Heavenly Sovereigns, and she killed with the fewest reservations!
The atmosphere instantly shifted. All was silent, still, and oppressive. Even the sound of the wind stopped, as if the very breeze itself had frozen in place.
Beads of cold sweat appeared on the Limitless Palace experts’ foreheads.
“This junior was blind and foolish. I didn’t realize you were here, Senior. Please, forgive my ignorance!” Wu Yu took a deep breath and bowed.
Lu Hongpao disregarded him, swept her gaze across the crowd, and laughed. “Don’t be afraid. I’m just here to help my good brother Su Yi clean up the mess. I’m not here to goof around.”
But this did nothing to calm the onlookers. On the contrary, more of them were more afraid than ever.
A Heavenly Sovereign had come to clean up Su Yi’s mess personally!
Who could possibly fail to realize the implications?
