Chapter 351: Chapter 351: No Miracle, Only Will
He reached down with a trembling, blood-soaked hand and grabbed the thick chitin leg near the spike and gritted his teeth.
With a sharp grunt of pain, he pushed the dead leg away from his body.
The spike slid out of his flesh with a wet, sickening sound. Fresh blood spilled out of the puncture wound, soaking into the ruined inner lining of his Badger armor.
It hurt like hell, a sharp, throbbing fire that made him want to throw up, but he was damn alive. His lung was intact. His ribs were bruised to hell, but at least not fully broken.
He grabbed the hilt of the Dreadwing Blade with both hands again. Planting his boot on the cracked skull, he violently ripped the blade out.
A fresh, foul-smelling spout of ruined brain matter and gore splashed across his boots.
Sol just stayed there for a long minute. He kneeled on the dead giant’s chest, the blade resting on the shell beside him. He kept taking harsh, ragged breaths, trying to get enough oxygen to stop the dark spots from completely taking over his vision. He just focused on the feeling of his lungs expanding. The feeling of being alive.
Slowly, painfully, using the sword as a crutch, he pushed himself up to his feet.
His legs wobbled. He felt like he weighed a thousand pounds. He lifted the back of his heavy and wiped a thick, gross layer of mud and gore off his face, smearing the blood across his cheek. He ignored the stinging, burning fire in his side. He could patch it up later. Right now, he just needed to make sure it was over.
Even though he wanted to use free use and get his soul, he knew the priority so he placed his hand on its skull and sucked the hell out of its essence.
Slowly, the heavy, thick energy of the Layer 3 beast rushed up his arm.
Since his Sun Core was completely bone dry, the incoming essence hit his empty pathways like a flash flood tearing through a dry riverbed. It burned like hell for a second, wild and chaotic. But he didn’t care. He aggressively ground it down, forcing the raw energy into his core, where it was swiftly converted into Golden liquid, which he then forced into circulation.
He didn’t bother directing it toward his muscles or trying to stockpile it. He shoved every single drop straight toward the gaping hole in his side.
Finally the great Badger’s abilities had time to shine.
Sol gritted his teeth as a hot, agonizingly itchy sensation spread across his ribs. The torn meat and busted blood vessels hissed. He could literally feel the muscle fibers knitting back together.
It wasn’t a perfect, miraculous heal but it had forcefully stopped the bleeding and dragged him back from the edge of going to personally meet the gods and ask why didn’t they helped him.
The heavy, crushing weight in his legs that was forcing him to kiss the ground finally started to lift. And those cinematic dark spots cleared out of his eyes.
Sol let out a long breath and pulled his hand away from the cracked skull.
He rolled his shoulders, ignoring the dull ache, and fully straightened his back and looked toward the settlement.
The area around the splintered timber gates was dead quiet. The Vanguard warriors, the reserve spearmen, the archers up on the lower walls… they were all completely frozen. Dozens of tough, scarred veterans who had spent their whole lives fighting in this rotting jungle were just standing there, staring at him with their jaws practically hitting the floorboards.
Nobody cheered. Nobody even moved. They were in absolute shock.
They were still in absolute shock, their minds finding it difficult to process what their eyes had seen. They had just watched a guy casually butcher a walking mountain that was seconds away from wiping their entire tribe off the map.
Just then, a motion finally broke the frozen scene.
Kira.
She wasn’t just standing on the high wall anymore.
In fact, she was already halfway across the bloody mud.
From her angle, she had definitely seen that massive spike punch into his side. She completely abandoned her post. She didn’t bother looking for the stairs. She just vaulted over a broken section of the inner barricade, dropping her heavy war-bow onto the wood without a second thought.
She was sprinting across the battlefield, completely ignoring the stunned Vanguard guards, shoving past a burly captain who was in her way. She didn’t care about tribal discipline or keeping up her usual stoic, fierce front. She was sprinting straight toward him, her face pale and twisted with pure, frantic worry.
Sol blinked, his brain taking a second to catch up. Even though getting pinned and tearing his core apart had felt like a long, agonizing lifetime, but in reality, it had only been a handful of brutal seconds. Kira must have vaulted off that high wall the exact second he jumped onto the beetle’s belly. She hadn’t waited to see if he would win or die. She had just moved.
Sol couldn’t help the tired, genuine smile that tugged at the corner of his bloody mouth.
But as his eyes tracked her, he caught sight of another figure trailing far behind her.
Zeyra.
She was running too.
But she was a lot farther back, but her dark eyes were locked straight on him. Her clothes were messed up and her face was smeared with dirt. She was pushing herself, but the gap between her and Kira was just too big. Zeyra stared at Kira rapidly closing the distance, and then her dark eyes snapped straight to Sol.
She was pushing herself to close the distance, staring at Kira’s back with a heavy, bitter frustration. She wanted to be the first one there. She wanted to be the one reaching him.
Sol held her burning gaze for a split second. Even from a distance, he could feel the heavy ambition and jealousy rolling off her.
But he didn’t have time to dwell on it. Kira finally reached him, crashing heavily into his chest and completely snapping his attention back to reality.
