Getting a Sugar Mommy in Cultivation World!! - Chapter 844 - 844: Why Not?

“Not to mention the numerous amount of traps that were laid in that path.” The man also turned to look at the long black-haired youth and asked, “the path you came from was supposed to be blocked by a secret formation. How did you get across that?”
The air around the two of them suddenly tensed. Yuan Ming could feel the prickling sensation on his skin.
One wrong move, one improper answer, and they could be exposed.
“I have some knowledge about arrays.” Noah finally spoke up, “noticing an array is not a big problem. From where it was placed, I could guess it was a formation to unlock some secret pathway.”
Noah spoke like he got lucky and noticed the array formation. Then he took a gamble with the stone, thinking it was the key for the formation.
And his gamble paid off.
Supervisor Gui nodded seriously after hearing Noah’s words, but it was still not clear whether he believed it or not.
“I cannot be certain whether he is telling the truth about being a formation expert for now or not since I would need to remove his restriction to check, but it does not really matter.”
Supervisor Gui was not worried since they could always check later, and if Noah had lied, it would not be too late to find out his motives some other way.
Noah was too talented for him to discard easily, and Yuan Ming was also one of the few talented students.
He was one of the few who had attained mastery in the Nine-Slaughter Blood Meridian Technique.
Noah also explained that he took the path that barely had any scratches or traces of fighting. He did not even notice many footprints on the ground, which indicated it was not used often.
And yet… there were lingering traces of demonic energy that he could sense the moment he entered the platform space.
In fact, there were other traces as well, but Noah chose the one with the most dense traces.
“It seems you have almost reached the perfection state in the Nine-Slaughter Blood Meridian Technique.” Supervisor Gui finally revealed his old flattering smile once more. “Only those who have attained such a stage in understanding can sense the demonic energy in the air freely.”
The supervisor guided the two of them to sit in the middle of the open area while he himself sat on his familiar chair.
He gestured to the open area in the middle of the chamber.
“Please, sit.”
Noah and Yuan Ming moved to the designated spot, settling onto the stone floor. Supervisor Gui remained in his chair, watching them with renewed interest.
The silence stretched for a moment before the supervisor spoke again.
“It will take weeks before the others may arrive. The second stage is not kind to most,” he said matter-of-factly. As far as he was concerned, it was because of luck that Noah and Yuan Ming made it this far so early.
“What you do with that time is up to you. You can continue training here, refine your techniques, or…” He paused meaningfully. “You can move on deeper into the next trial.”
Before the two could even think, he interrupted their thoughts.
“Since you are the first one to arrive, I should give you some sort of reward.” His eyes gleamed unnaturally as he said, “I will give you a hint about the third trial.”
“The trial will take place in three years, and in the meantime, you will be training the techniques you will be using in that trial. That is all I can say.”
He stood up slowly, his joints cracking slightly with age.
But before he could turn to leave, he stopped.
When he spoke again, his tone had changed. It was no longer casual. There was weight to the question.
“Why did the two of you want to join the demonic cult?”
Noah raised his head to meet the eyes of the supervisor and noticed a hint of coldness hidden deep within them.
The silence that followed the question was heavy enough to make Yuan Ming tense.
His fist clenched and his jaw tightened. The boy looked at the supervisor with unyielding flames in his eyes, which seemed to have caught the man off guard.
“I wanted to grow strong,” he said, his voice steady but edged with truth. “The world outside does not give power to those without talent, background, or resources. I want to grow strong enough to be able to stand alongside those geniuses with my head held high.”
For some reason, Yuan Ming did not want to lie about this. He explained the core of his reason for being there and not the plans he had for the technique and running away.
Supervisor Gui’s gaze shifted to Noah. “And you?”
Instead of answering directly, Noah asked a question himself, “Why not?”
His response left the man stunned; he stared at Noah without blinking for a few seconds.
He did not make any reasons or excuses, just asked a simple question that left the man thinking.
Indeed, why not?
Was there something wrong with wanting to join their cult?
Everyone wanted power for one reason or another, so they joined all sorts of sects.
Why would joining the Heavenly Demonic Cult be any different?
For a moment, Supervisor Gui stared at him. Then a laugh burst from his chest, unrestrained laughter that echoed through the chamber.
“HAHAHA!!!” He laughed until tears formed at the corners of his eyes, and when he finally composed himself, he was shaking his head.
“You have a dangerous way of thinking, boy,” he said between breaths. “But I like it.”
He began walking toward the far passage, then paused once more without turning back.
“The cult is willing to take anyone without caring about their background or origins. We do not discriminate,” his voice became cold, all traces of amusement vanishing.
“But understand this—if you betray us, if we discover you are spies or working against the organization’s interests, you will beg for death. And we will turn your souls inside out before we even think of granting that mercy.”
The warning settled over them like a stone dropped into still water.
“I suggest you consider carefully what you have chosen to become part of.”
With that, Supervisor Gui walked into the darkness of the passage beyond and was gone.
