- Chapter 1790: Meeting the Serpent Maiden Again

“L-long time no see…” replied Valyr after taking a deep breath to calm down his emotions.
Then, after looking around a bit to see where he had ended up, he looked back at the being in front of him and asked, “Would it have been a problem for you to give me a heads-up beforehand?”
“No.” The being shook its head, the smile on their face now carrying hints of teasing. “But seeing your reaction to it has made that decision worthwhile.”
At those words, the young man could only let out a sigh.
“Is this perhaps your way of getting payback from me not coming here the moment I reached the peak of Rank 4?” asked Valyr, getting the feeling that this was the reason. “I’d understand if that were the case, Serpent Maiden.”
“Oh?” Yet, rather than respond to the question, the Serpent Maiden continued to look at him with a teasing smile. “Now what makes you think that’s the case, Valyr?”
Although she hadn’t said it outright through her words, her question already told him that his decision to not head to the Shadow Plane was indeed the reason why the Serpent Maiden acted that way.
With that in mind, a wry smile soon appeared on his face.
’And here I thought I’d just grab my rewards from the Shadow Plane without any problems and head back to Veldanyr after that,’ thought the young man to himself, only to slowly shake his head soon after.
’Guess I won’t be getting to do that any time soon.’
Letting out yet another sigh after that, Valyr looked back at the Serpent Maiden as he decided not to respond to her question.
Instead, he remained silent, only to then give her a knowing glance as he briefly shrugged his shoulders.
In response, the Serpent Maiden let out a knowing chuckle as if she understood what he meant by his gestures.
Though, not even a second later, her expression turned solemn as the aura emanating from her returned to what one would expect from the Saintess of the Shadow Plane.
“Alright, enough joking around,” she said, letting Valyr hear the words he wanted to hear. “Think of my prior actions as a slight punishment for not being punctual.”
At those words, the latter nodded in understanding.
“Though, considering the level of strength that I’m currently sensing from you…” The Serpent Maiden slightly furrowed her brows. “I suppose it’s due time for you to meet the Overseer.”
“Hmm?” Valyr raised his eyebrow in slight surprise. “Out of nowhere?”
“What? Afraid of meeting the Overseer?” She gave him a teasing smile once more.
“It’s not that.” The young man shook his head. “It’s just…”
“Just…?”
“…Nothing,” said Valyr after giving the entire thing a bit of thought. “Pretend I didn’t say anything.”
Though the Serpent Maiden looked back at him with curiosity after those words, she was eventually forced to push it aside after seeing that Valyr did not want to talk about it any further.
Then again, the reason why the young man did not want to continue the topic was because the thought of the Mystic Plane popped up in his mind the moment the Serpent Maiden mentioned meeting the Overseer.
’Hopefully my connection with the Mystic Plane doesn’t affect anything,’ muttered Valyr to himself as he followed behind the Serpent Maiden not long after.
…
Whoosh!
“Where are we heading, exactly?”
After the Serpent Maiden told him that she was bringing him to meet with the Overseer, the former took it upon herself to bring him there with a cloud of Shadow Energy.
Watching the surroundings around them turn into a blur as they zoomed through the Shadow Plane’s skies, Valyr decided to break the silence surrounding them by asking the Serpent Maiden a question.
“Where else would I be bringing you?” the latter responded with a slight smile. “The place where the Overseer is staying, obviously.”
Hearing those words, the young man could not help but think of Marcus. “Does the Overseer not have the ability to appear anywhere within the Shadow Plane? They are the Overseer, after all.”
“The Overseer does indeed have that ability,” answered the Serpent Maiden, inwardly wondering where Valyr got that information. “However, the Overseer only saves that ability for special cases due to how much energy it uses.”
“Is that so?” The young man went silent for a bit after that, the gears in his mind turning as he eventually nodded in understanding. “Where is the Overseer staying, then?”
“Though you’ve contributed quite a decent amount to the Shadow Plane, I’m afraid I can’t tell you that yet,” she replied. “But if the Overseer decides to tell you about it when you two finally meet, then I won’t stop you from knowing.”
“That secretive, huh?” Seeing as he wouldn’t obtain any more information from her if he were to continue with the topic, Valyr went ahead and shifted the topic to somewhere else.
“Now that I think about it, what kind of reward were you and the Overseer planning to give me after I reached the peak of Rank 4?” he asked.
“Mostly something similar to what I’ve given you in the past,” the Serpent Maiden replied. “However, I’ve changed my mind after getting a feel for your current level of strength.”
“Speaking of which, you’ve already reached the peak of Rank 5, no?” she asked soon after, to which Valyr shook his head.
“Not yet. If anything, I’ve just recently ascended to Rank 5,” he replied, causing the cloud they were on to stop all of a sudden as the Serpent Maiden looked at him in utter disbelief.
“You’re joking, right?” she said, thinking that she had just heard the greatest joke of all time. “With that level of strength, you’ve seriously just recently ascended to Rank 5?”
“Yeah?” Valyr nodded, his expression now containing slight confusion. “Is there a problem?”
“…” Remaining silent for a bit, the Serpent Maiden closed his eyes as faint fluctuations of Shadow Energy began to manifest around her.
Around a minute later, those fluctuations gradually began to disappear as she looked at Valyr once more.
“Let me ask you once more,” she said. “Have you really just ascended to Rank 5?”
Not wanting to repeat one more time, Valyr decided to show her his status screen in response, specifically the part that contained his current level.
Seeing that the level on the screen was precisely the starting level for those at Rank 5, the Serpent Maiden’s expression turned solemn as determination soon filled her gaze.
“It seems like I may have underestimated you in the past, Valyr,” said the Serpent Maiden all of a sudden, causing the young man to pause as he tried to understand what she meant by that.
Yet, before he could even start pondering over her words, the two disappeared from where they were in an instant, only to appear at a secluded spot within the Shadow Plane not even a few seconds later.
