“Huh? No.”
“We’re not going. Why are you dressed so frumpy?”
“Is it really that frumpy?” Jiangg Ning looked down at herself, then checked her reflection in the mirror. “I think it’s fine.”
“Don’t be so ridiculous! You’re representing both of us, you know. Can’t you put in a little effort?”
Jiangg Yao was more anxious than she was. After all, Jiangg Ning was going to meet Chen Yuan’s friends.
Dressed so old-fashioned, she wouldn’t look like she belonged with him at all.
“Then what do you suggest?”
“Take it off! I’ll pick something for you!”
Jiangg Yao tossed aside the half-eaten apple, wiped her hands, and without a second word, marched over and stripped Ningning down to her underwear. She then had her sit awkwardly to the side while she rummaged through the closet.
“How about this gray-and-white plaid newsboy cap with that mid-length haute couture coat, plus black thigh-high boots? Whether you wear nude stockings is up to you.”
“Fine, I’ll try it.”
Jiangg Ning tied up her hair, grabbed a simple white top to wear underneath, and rustled into the clothes according to Jiangg Yao’s aesthetic.
「A moment later.」
Jiangg Yao clapped her hands. “It’s still missing something! I’ll go get you that treasured bag of mine.”
She was gone and back in a flash.
Once Jiangg Ning had the bag on, her reflection in the mirror had indeed transformed into a completely different style. She had the gentle, neighborly-big-sister vibe of a chance encounter in a winter alleyway; her whole aura seemed to soften.
“Not bad.”
“It’s okay. This outfit is fine for going shopping, but… wait, where did you say you two were going?”
“To the mountain behind the school for a barbecue and a small hot pot.”
“Then this won’t work at all! Change, change!”
Her interest piqued, Jiangg Yao quickly stripped her sister down again. Ningning clutched her chest, a pitiful and moving sight to behold.
‘It should have a sense of playful airiness, but not look frivolous. Too cutesy is also a no-go… Let me see, aha, got it!’
She picked out a classic black-and-white ensemble for Ningning. The thigh-high boots were swapped for combat boots, and the form-fitting jeans perfectly accentuated how straight her long legs were—a sight that made Yaoyao herself a little envious. She then let Ningning’s hair down and styled it with some wispy bangs.
When she looked in the mirror again, Jiangg Ning felt a strong sense of unfamiliarity.
She had never tried this kind of style before and was completely unaccustomed to it.
“It’s a Neon-style outfit. It makes you look younger and feels so light, right? Now, pair it with a brown bag… Didn’t you buy a classic Gucci one last year?”
“It’s pretty, but… don’t I look a little girlish?”
“Tsk, now that you mention it, I think so too. How about we swap out the jacket, then pair a white form-fitting sweater underneath with a knit cardigan on top?”
“Let’s try.”
“Okay, I’ll go find them.”
After the two sisters worked together, they stood before the mirror once more.
Jiangg Ning was, without exaggeration, breathtakingly beautiful!
Her new outfit not only had a relaxed, languid feel, but also a hint of a mature, older-sister charm. The skinny jeans and combat boots nicely offset the bulkiness of winter wear, while the V-neck sweater added a touch of lightness.
Yaoyao, with a popsicle stick still in her mouth, even used a straightener to give her some light curls.
“Holy crap, you’re gorgeous!”
“It is nice.” Jiangg Ning did a little twirl, unable to find a single flaw.
“Absolutely perfect! Now, chest out, butt in. Let me see how it looks from a distance.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Yes, yes! Go out just like this. This time, you’re truly unbeatable.”
Truth be told, Ningning and Yaoyao were both rare, stunning beauties. It was just that they couldn’t be bothered with things like short-video apps.
Otherwise, they would have really shown people what a true rich girl from Mingzhu City looked like.
Their skin, whiter than cream, wasn’t even worth mentioning. It was their delicate and exquisite features that were a truly rare sight.
…
「Meanwhile.」
Chen Yuan had no idea that Yaoyao and Ningning were going through so much trouble to get ready.
He had left the house wearing just sneakers and a regular down jacket. After all, they were going to the mountain, which meant a lot of running around. Plus, the barbecue would be smoky and sooty; even a nice outfit would just end up filthy.
His afternoon was going to be busy. Most of the fresh ingredients were already bought. The diligent Jiangg Yao had taken on some of the work, starting to wash vegetables in the morning. It wasn’t originally her task, but with Ningning busy with work, the chore had fallen to her.
Jiangg Yao grumbled the whole time she was washing the vegetables. She wouldn’t even get to eat any of it, but she still had to do the work. How could she not be mad?
Once she was done, she portioned out the sliced duck blood and other vegetables into plastic containers, covered them with plastic wrap, and finally placed them in the box Chen Yuan had prepared.
It was a huge pile of food, plus snacks—more than enough for a few big guys to eat their fill.
Judging by her actions, Yaoyao was certainly living up to her ambition of one day being a “good wife and loving mother.”
‘She really is… I could cry.’
So, Chen Yuan’s plan was to first pick up Wei Zhen and Li Bing from the maid cafe, then go to the high-speed rail station for Liu Nan and Quan Yafeng. After dropping them all off at the school to settle their luggage, he would come back to get Ningning and head to the mountain together.
The meaning was far more important than the method.
When it came to eating, you could get a full meal at any restaurant for a few hundred yuan. But everyone was in it for the novelty and the lively atmosphere.
This was why a group of friends always loved to make a big, fun mess of things when they got together.
But most importantly, the reason Wei Zhen had gone to all this trouble to organize the picnic—besides meeting Chen Yuan’s “rumored girlfriend”—was to set up Li Bing and Quan Yafeng.
From that confession not long after the semester started until now…
Quan Yafeng’s sincerity was plain for all to see; all the bros had witnessed it.
It wasn’t a passing infatuation, but a long-term inf… a long-term affection!
This was true love!
Besides, Li Bing was a rare kind of good girl. It was only natural for a few “dads” to worry about their son’s future daughter-in-law.
To be honest, after contacting Chen Yuan yesterday, Wei Zhen hadn’t expected Li Bing to agree when he messaged her. But after he hinted that everyone from the dorm would be there, Li Bing had, for some strange reason, accepted.
Wei Zhen immediately shared the news in the group chat.
You could say Quan Yafeng was so excited he declared on the spot that he had “drifted half his life, only regretting not meeting his rightful lord sooner.” He was too worked up to sleep that night, chattering away in the group chat until the wee hours.
…
Pulling up to the cafe, Chen Yuan saw Wei Zhen and Li Bing already waiting from a distance.
At first glance, however, he didn’t recognize Li Bing.
She was wearing a different down jacket. Her long hair wasn’t tied back casually with a hair tie as usual but was flowing down, smooth and shiny. She wore a pure white down jacket, wide-leg jeans, and simple white sneakers.
‘No wonder people always say long hair adds to one’s looks.’
Just based on appearance, Li Bing looked genuinely pretty today.
He unlocked the car doors.
Wei Zhen plopped right into the passenger seat.
“Ahh, nice. I’ve got my own personal driver now.”
“Alright, Boss Wei. Buckle up and we’ll be on our way.”
“OK, OK.”
He buckled his seatbelt, adjusted the seat, and leaned back, relishing the moment.
For a university student, having a car brought an unparalleled sense of happiness. It made getting around incredibly convenient.
“By the way, have you called Yafeng and the others? What time are they getting in? I heard there might be a delay.”
“I don’t think so. I already asked. They’re on time, should be here in about fifteen minutes.”
“Alright then. I was originally thinking we could make a detour to go get a grill and a small table.”
“No need. I’ve already arranged it. A local outdoor picnic club is delivering everything. We just have to show up.”
“That’s great.” Wei Zhen felt completely at ease. If it had been the other two guys from the dorm handling things, he wouldn’t trust them one bit. But leaving it to Chen Yuan was a different story; Chen Yuan was also a very meticulous person.
The two of them chatted.
Li Bing sat in the back seat, reading a book by herself.
She was quiet, completely undisturbed.
Ostensibly, Wei Zhen had invited *his* friends, but Li Bing knew full well this probably had something to do with Quan Yafeng.
‘But why did I agree to come?’
Only she herself knew the answer.
‘Perhaps it was out of curiosity about Chen Yuan. A guy like him always gets a lot of attention in class. Most of the girls’ eyes are drawn to him.’
‘His every move is always the focus of someone’s gaze.’
