- Chapter 323 - 216: An Angry Wei Zhen, Four College Guys and One Car

It wasn’t that Chen Yuan was being paranoid; Liu Nan was absolutely capable of something like that.
He pushed open the door.
Chen Yuan briefly pushed the matter to the back of his mind. He plopped down in his chair, picked up a pen and paper, and looked at the intern who was standing there blankly.
“Continue.”
“Yes, Chairman Jiang!”
…
「Longtan District.」
A secluded apartment on the seventh floor.
To find this apartment, one had to enter the district, make numerous turns, cross between several sky-bridges connecting the buildings, and search for over ten minutes. Even the real estate agent leading Wei Zhen and Quan Yafeng got lost himself.
After much fuss, he had to call the landlord, who then guided them the rest of the way via video call.
Only then did they finally get inside.
“Don’t be fooled by how remote it seems. It’s actually very easy to find. You just enter through the main gate, go up a few escalators, cross a bridge, and you’re here. We just took the long way around,” the agent said, wiping sweat from his brow.
“It’s plenty remote. Why is it so damp inside?” Wei Zhen walked in with a frown, immediately smelling a musty odor.
“It’s not a problem. It just needs to be aired out. It hasn’t been rented for a while, and the landlord was planning on living here himself.” As he spoke, the man trotted over to the window, pinching his nose as he pushed it open.
A flurry of dust, like falling snow, drifted down the moment the glass pane shuddered.
It landed on the bald patch on his head.
“COUGH, COUGH, COUGH—”
“How many bedrooms? Does it have the basic appliances?” Wei Zhen asked, resisting the urge to turn and walk right out.
“Two bedrooms, one bathroom, one living room. The balcony and kitchen are a decent size, too. The air conditioner is a bit old, but we can have the landlord add a refrigerator.”
“The space is about right.”
“Of course it is! Weren’t you looking for a place that’s secluded and spacious? Most college students share apartments, you know. It’s hard to find a whole unit for rent. And getting you a whole four-bedroom place wouldn’t be right either.”
While Wei Zhen was talking with the agent,
Quan Yafeng wandered around the apartment, opening a few cabinets in the bedroom and inspecting the place.
A moment later, he came back to Wei Zhen’s side and muttered, “These cabinets are older than the ones at my grandma’s house in the countryside.”
Wei Zhen gave a bitter smile.
“Just tell me, how much a month?” he asked the agent.
“This much… twenty-three hundred.”
“How much!?” Quan Yafeng’s eyes went wide as saucers, and he thought he must have misheard.
“Twenty-three hundred!”
“For this dump!? Seriously, sir, I wouldn’t even rent this for a thousand. I checked, the toilet isn’t made of gold, and sitting on it doesn’t make you feel like an emperor holding court. So what’s the excuse for it being so expensive?”
It was probably too absurd.
The situation was so ridiculous that even the normally quiet Quan Yafeng found his tongue, cracking sarcastic jokes.
“The reason? Location, location, location! We’re right by the university. Tons of students rent off-campus. And like I said, this is for the whole unit. You can’t compare it to the price of sharing a place. If you want something for a thousand a month, I can find you a four-bedroom in Phoenix City. Cheap and practical.”
“We’re not renting.” Wei Zhen threw out the words and pulled Quan Yafeng away to leave.
The agent chased after them, calling out from behind:
“The price is negotiable! I can get the landlord to lower it for you, young man… Young man!”
…
The two wandered aimlessly down the street. They spotted a Snow Honey Ice City nearby and found a place to sit. Wei Zhen went inside to buy two drinks, and they sat together, drinking their milk tea and watching the pedestrians.
POP—
Wei Zhen stabbed his straw into the plastic lid and chewed on the pleasantly chewy boba pearls.
“I think we should stop using agents. Let’s go check the notice boards at the entrances to some apartment complexes. All the listings online are from agents, and they’re expensive and unreliable.”
“Okay. I heard Liu from the dorm next door rents over there,” Quan Yafeng said, pointing. With a loud SLURP, he took two hard sucks of his milk tea. “Hu Zhong Garden. The price isn’t bad, and the area looks way better than that last complex we saw.”
“Then let’s go check it out later.”
“Mm…” Quan Yafeng rubbed his buzz cut, then turned to look at Wei Zhen and said hesitantly, “Are you really moving out, Fourth Brother?”
“What else would we be doing? Just hanging out for fun?”
“I think living in the dorm is pretty good, though. It’s fun. Renting a place is expensive and lonely. Why don’t you reconsider?”
“No,” Wei Zhen said, shaking his head. “Eldest Brother, why don’t you rent with me? We’d save money, and it wouldn’t be lonely.”
“Nah, I’m good. I’ve been living in dorms since middle school. I’d feel weird *not* living in one now.”
They chatted for a bit.
The two of them fell into a brief silence.
The truth was, Quan Yafeng knew what had happened, but he was clumsy with words and didn’t know how to comfort him. If it were a matter of hauling all the luggage out of the dorm, he’d be great at it. But when it came to something as delicate as consoling someone, he had no idea where to start.
RING-A-LING—
A phone rang, and Quan Yafeng pulled out his cell.
His eyes lit up as if he’d just been thrown a life raft, and he quickly swiped up to answer.
“Hey, Yuan.”
“Where are we? We’re at the Snow Honey Ice City one street over from the north gate of Hu Zhong Garden. Are you coming over?”
“Okay, we’ll wait for you here.”
“Sure, we can figure out dinner later.”
After saying that, he hung up and quickly stood up.
Wei Zhen asked, a little confused, “Yuan’s coming over? Is he off work?”
“Yeah, I’m gonna go get him a drink.”
「A moment later.」
An excited Quan Yafeng came back out, carrying two lemonades, and placed them on the table to the side.
Wei Zhen glanced over but didn’t say anything.
A few minutes later, an elegant and stately Mercedes-Benz drove over from the end of the street. It moved slowly, as the street was full of students coming and going.
Chen Yuan spotted Eldest Brother waving from the side of the road at a glance. He slapped the thigh of Liu Nan, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
“Don’t run your mouth later. If you have something to say, save it for dinner tonight. Act like nothing’s wrong.”
