“…That’s okay. I’ve actually wanted to move out for a long time. I was just using this as an excuse to bring it up.”
“Don’t move out,” Chen Yuan sighed. “Things at the shop are still up in the air. Without this high-paying job, the pressure of living on your own will be too much.”
“It’s no big deal. I’m sure the shop will be okay. And I was just thinking out loud about moving.”
“Why don’t we go get something to eat?” Liu Nan suggested.
“Yeah, let’s eat, let’s eat.”
“You could give Li Bing a call and ask her,” Quan Yafeng stammered. “This afternoon… in the car, didn’t you say she knew some inside information? We could ask her to eat with us. It would be great to confirm we have a stable income before renting a place, don’t you think?”
So *that* was Quan Yafeng’s plan.
No wonder he suddenly pulled this stunt after they left the internet cafe.
Chen Yuan figured it out.
“Ask her to dinner? It’s the four of us guys again. You sure she’ll even come? Last time we all went out, we pushed you forever and you didn’t even add her on Green Bubble. This time…”
“I’ll be brave this time! I’ll definitely add her!” Quan Yafeng said, slinging an arm around his neck to butter him up. “Dinner’s on me tonight. Order whatever you want.”
“Sigh… Alright, fine.”
Chen Yuan didn’t really mind. A faint smile touched his lips, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared.
They were at an age where they should have been carefree, yet each of them had their own burdens. Quan Yafeng was pining away over an unrequited love. Liu Nan was always offending people because he couldn’t hold his tongue. Wei Zhen was terrified his secret life as a Xiaonan’niang would be exposed, forcing him to be constantly on guard.
’As for myself…’
That went without saying. He still hadn’t figured out the whole multiple personality issue.
The group walked side-by-side toward the parking lot.
Quan Yafeng watched with wide, hopeful eyes as Wei Zhen pulled out his phone and dialed Li Bing’s number. His ears were pricked, trying to listen in, his expression a mask of tension.
“Hey, Li Bing? Are you off work yet? It’s nothing important, just wanted to see if you’d like to get a bite to eat with us. Plus, remember how I asked you about the shop this morning? You were busy, so we barely got to talk before you had to work. This would be a good chance to catch up properly. How many of us? My whole dorm is here. We can eat anything, whatever’s convenient. You’ll come? … Okay, then I’ll come pick you up.”
After a bit of back and forth, it was settled.
He’d actually done it.
Quan Yafeng was so excited he started dancing around.
“Yes! This is great! Zhen, you’re my brother from another mother!”
“Well, well. Looks like you’ve got a shot!”
“A shot at what?”
“I think you’ve got a real shot with Li Bing,” Wei Zhen said, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “Normally, she’d never agree to something like this. You know her personality. The fact that she’s been willing to come these last few times means that, deep down, she’s not opposed to going out with you.”
“Sound logic. Very convincing.” Quan Yafeng nodded vigorously, absolutely thrilled.
…
The group picked a random Sichuan restaurant nearby.
No one was picky about where to eat. They were all students, so they weren’t about to shamelessly run up a huge bill on Quan Yafeng’s dime. At a place like this, five people could eat until they were stuffed and it would only cost a hundred or two hundred yuan.
Before long, Li Bing arrived, having been picked up.
Chen Yuan felt too tired to drive, so he’d had Quan Yafeng—the only other one with a license—take the car to pick her up. He and Liu Nan had gone to the restaurant first to wait.
Once everyone was gathered, the food arrived right on cue.
Who knows what was going through Quan Yafeng’s head, but after picking Li Bing up, he very deliberately plopped down next to Chen Yuan, leaving the seats on the other side for Wei Zhen and Li Bing.
This maneuver left everyone scratching their heads.
The three other guys at the table rolled their eyes at him.
It wasn’t that they hadn’t given him opportunities, and it wasn’t that Quan Yafeng was a completely clueless guy. He was just painfully shy!
It was maddening to watch!
If it had been Liu Nan in his shoes, he would have been on the ground worshipping the very ground she walked on. He wouldn’t be wasting time with “gentlemanly conduct.” What did Yafeng think this was, a middle school crush? Where you secretly place your homework notebook on top of hers, only to blush bright red the second a friend notices?
Besides, Li Bing knew perfectly well that Quan Yafeng was into her.
It wasn’t a secret crush if everyone already knew.
“Whatever, let’s just eat!”
With a clatter of chopsticks, everyone gave up on the shy bastard and focused on filling their stomachs.
…
“So, what’s the deal with the manager? She hasn’t even made a schedule for the past few days. People are taking days off, leaving early, hiding out in the dressing room instead of working, and some are even getting into fights with customers. I didn’t see a trace of her this morning. Did she show up in the afternoon?”
“She did…” Li Bing ate very delicately, using her chopsticks to lift tiny portions of rice to her mouth, occasionally sampling a dish. “I heard the maid cafe is going to close. Probably next month.”
“For real?” Wei Zhen said, stunned.
Hearing this, Chen Yuan stopped eating as well, listening silently to get the full story.
Quan Yafeng, meanwhile, was secretly thrilled, thinking to himself, ’Her voice is so crisp and pleasant.’
“That’s what Ran said.”
“Why would they close? Business is so good!”
“The lease expired, and the space has been rented to someone else.”
“That’s impossible. Just a few days ago, I saw the manager at the front desk doing the accounts. She was planning on taking out some money for renovations, to fix up the central stage. I never heard anything about the lease expiring.”
“I don’t know the specifics. I guess someone else rented it out from under her before she signed a new contract.”
“Shit… well, they could just move to a new location, right? Open up somewhere else. We have so many regulars. As long as a notice goes out in the group chat, I’m sure plenty of people would go to the new shop.”
At that moment, Chen Yuan found himself answering instinctively, “Moving would probably mean much higher rent. It’s not the same market it was a few years ago. Even for a slightly worse location, the rent would likely jump by fifty percent. She’d probably have to go to the suburbs to find a place that big for a reasonable price.”
