She moved closer until she could smell the scent on his clothes, until she could reach his chin just by standing on her tiptoes.
Chen Yuan lowered his head. Jiangg Yao’s face flushed red with shyness.
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and puckered her soft pink lips.
“Mwah~”
A cool breeze swept by. Jiangg Yao, who had been anticipating that wonderful feeling on her lips, felt nothing at all. A few seconds later, Chen Yuan snatched the black plastic bag from her hand.
“Here, kitty kitty—Here, kitty kitty—”
She stared blankly as she opened her eyes.
The first thing she saw was Chen Yuan, already crouched down, scooping a handful of cat food from the plastic bag and waving at a calico cat behind a tree.
“Huh?”
She was dumbfounded.
’Seriously, dude?’
’He calls a girl as gorgeous as a flower out here in the middle of the night… to feed cats!?’
The corner of Jiangg Yao’s mouth twitched. Furious, she spun around and stormed off, her steps quick and her teeth clenched.
“What the heck… Getting my hopes up for so long. That Young Master is such a blockhead. Let him feed them by himself!”
“Jiangg Yao?”
Chen Yuan suddenly called out, his back still to her.
“What!”
“I’ll get you a handful of food. You lure out the cat under that bench.”
“You…”
She stood with her hands on her hips, biting the corner of her lip. She had half a mind to go over and punch Chen Yuan. She looked as cute as a puffed-up frog.
“Where’d you go?”
“I’m here!”
Jiangg Yao sighed, turned around, and walked back to Chen Yuan, taking a handful of cat food.
’Can’t be helped. This is the fate of a simp,’ she thought mournfully, resiliently wiping away the tears from the corners of her eyes. With a woeful expression, she went to feed the cats.
“Where is it?”
“Clap your hands. It’s definitely hiding. Don’t be too loud, that tabby cat is very timid.”
“You sure know a lot about it.”
“Of course. I’ve fed it so many times before.”
“Sigh…”
Jiangg Yao clapped her hands and looked around. Perhaps because the night was too hazy, she searched for a long time without finding it. In the end, she could only clap like an idiot—CLAP… CLAP. The sound echoed across the dim lawn. She suddenly felt a little crazy.
“There’s nothing here at all… Huh!?”
From a broken drain behind the bench, a pair of eyes suddenly appeared, glowing eerily. They were so conspicuous in the darkness, like green gems.
She stared at those eyes, her breathing slowing.
Then, to her greater surprise, two or three more pairs of eyes appeared, though they were just small, blurry patches. Jiangg Yao carefully sprinkled some cat food on the bench. The RUSTLING sound attracted the tabby cat, and it darted up from the broken drainpipe.
It sauntered over with unhurried, elegant steps, not looking at all like a stray. It was as if a noble lady had arrived to enjoy her dinner.
Jiangg Yao met its gaze for a moment and then noticed several small, fluffy tabby kittens trailing behind it. They looked like they had just been born, waddling clumsily as if they might topple over at any moment.
“There are kittens,” she whispered, her voice filled with immense delight.
Girls have absolutely no resistance to cute creatures, let alone these kittens that were so cute it hurt.
“She actually had kittens?”
Chen Yuan was also a little surprised. He walked over, scattered a handful of cat food on the ground, and crouched down, gently calling to the little kittens.
The mother tabby was quick and agile. Perhaps used to being fed by students, she wasn’t at all afraid for her kittens’ safety. She leaped onto the bench in a single bound, her movements ghost-like, and lowered her head to eat quietly.
“This is… just too cute.”
Jiangg Yao was the very picture of caution, even crouching down with extreme care, afraid she might scare them.
Her heart was melting. She scrunched up her nose, the corners of her lips turning up in a smile as she tried to reach out and touch one of the little ones.
They all looked more or less the same, differing only in how plump they were. They were all just as clumsy, with coats of yellow, white, and gray.
Jiangg Yao gently poked the fattest one. The little tabby kitten quickly pulled its head back, squinted, and scurried aside to continue eating.
“Looks like I’ll have to come feed them more often from now on,” Chen Yuan said, picking up a clumsy kitten and placing it next to a small pile of food. “I saw the mother cat yesterday and thought she’d gotten a lot thinner. Turns out she had babies. Before the break, I thought she was getting really fat, and then I figured it was because no one was feeding her during the vacation.”
“So that’s why you came tonight? You like cats, Young Master?”
“A little. I just find the process relaxing. And they’re pretty cute.”
Chen Yuan didn’t admit it directly, but his incredibly gentle movements, as if terrified of hurting the fluffy creatures in the slightest, said it all.
Jiangg Yao was suddenly reminded that she had seen Chen Yuan do something similar before, back when they had first gotten back together.
Right now, his eyes were full of gentleness.
There was none of his usual sharp, cold demeanor. He patiently fed the cats bit by bit, making soft kissy sounds every so often and stroking their heads.
The smile on his face was bright and tender.
Jiangg Yao stared at Chen Yuan’s profile, her mind wandering.
She suddenly thought, in that instant, that Chen Yuan was very handsome.
It wasn’t about his looks, but a handsomeness that came from a sense of compassion, gentleness, and sensitivity.
’Now I get why I’ve always been so smitten with Chen Yuan. I’m always discovering these brilliant new sides to him, and I’m always moved by these little details.’
“Why do you keep staring at me?” Chen Yuan asked, glancing up.
“Just thinking you’re handsome…”
“I know.”
“Tch.”
Jiangg Yao couldn’t help but smile. The faint smile smoothed out her features, making her as gentle as the moonlight… though there was no moon tonight. The sun had vanished in the afternoon, leaving the sky dim and overcast.
Now, a cool wind blew ceaselessly, rustling the leaves of a ginkgo tree.
The two of them were crouched very close together. In the peaceful atmosphere of feeding the cats, Jiangg Yao couldn’t resist teasing him. She kept bumping him gently with her shoulder. Chen Yuan ignored it at first, but when it started to get annoying, he suddenly clicked his tongue.
“Are you annoying or what?”
“Not annoying…”
“Well, I’m annoyed.”
“You’re annoyed with me, and I like you.”
“What?”
“Even if you’re annoyed with me, you can’t stop me from liking you, Young Master. Kisses~” She deliberately puckered her lips, blew a kiss into the air, and winked at him with a smile in her eyes.
Chen Yuan was so startled he got goosebumps. In the past, Jiangg Yao would have just fired back a retort or, at worst, pretended to be aggrieved. That was normal.
But she had never been like this, shamelessly saying such things like it was a public declaration of being a simp.
’What on earth did I do?’
’I don’t think I did anything, did I?’
“Act normal.”
“I am being normal,” she said, then bumped Chen Yuan’s shoulder again. Biting her lip, she added in a cloyingly sweet voice, “I’ve been with you all day. How about a little reward?”
“It’s not like I asked you to hang out. You’re the one who insisted on sticking to me.”
“Yeah, I’m so pathetic, aren’t I? You’re mean to me, and I still rush to like you.”
“True.”
“So you’re satisfied hearing me say that? Happy now? That a beautiful girl like me is secretly your lapdog.”
“I never thought that. That’s all your own speculation.”
“Do I need to speculate? It’s written all over your face.”
“Impossible.”
“Hey… seriously, do you have some kind of masochistic streak, Young Master? You know, the feeling of actually being happy when someone is mean to you.”
“Isn’t that just sick? How could I possibly have that?”
“I don’t believe you,” Jiangg Yao said, narrowing her eyes with deep suspicion. “Don’t you have a thing for my sister? She’s exactly the type who isn’t proactive. And weren’t you enjoying it when I wore her clothes and… whipped you?”
Hearing this, Chen Yuan’s movements suddenly froze.
In the middle of the night.
To actually bring up a topic like this.
He rarely ever spoke about this stuff in private, whether with Jiangg Yao or Jiangg Ning, unless the mood was just right—in those extremely charged, ambiguous situations.
Now that they’d broken up, it was even more inappropriate to talk about it.
He pretended he hadn’t heard.
“Why aren’t you saying anything? I’ll take that as a yes…”
“No!” Chen Yuan denied it instantly.
“You’re lying. You were clearly happy when I gave you corporal punishment. It’s not like I couldn’t feel it. Do you have a fantasy about a certain profession? Is that why you like my sister?”
“Absolutely not! What kind of nonsense is this… Just stop talking.”
For some reason, Chen Yuan’s gaze flickered about as he hastily denied it, his face flushing red.
