Chapter 245: Chapter 156: In the Nether Realm (Part 2)
His Spiritual Power was slowly draining. He had to return to the real world before it was completely depleted, otherwise he risked being trapped here forever.
With a mere thought, a flash of crimson lightning erupted before him.
’The abilities from my Spiritual Professions are still working.’ Su Chen felt a great sense of relief.
’Spiritual Essence… born where spiritual remnants gather. Its colors are variegated, like a rainbow, and it’s naturally and powerfully attractive to Netherworld Creatures.’
Su Chen pondered, looking left, right, forward, and back. A wave of indecisiveness washed over him. ’Everything looks the same. Which way should I go?’
He didn’t even have a coin to flip.
Just as he was thinking, his gaze sharpened. Not far away, a grayish-black creature was curled into a ball, emitting a pale, misty aura. With its three or four tails, it resembled a fox.
The vast majority of Netherworld Creatures possessed only instinct, not consciousness.
’Perfect for a test…’ Su Chen thought. He first returned to the real world, his body fading into a spatial interstice, before re-entering the Nether Realm.
’Stupid.’ Su Chen was speechless. He had re-entered in a different location.
But he quickly spotted another Netherworld Creature.
Immediately, his body began to transform. His facial features vanished, and he assumed the form of a Faceless Ghost Priest.
But as soon as he completed the transformation, the Netherworld Creature crawling on the ground—which looked like a turtle—suddenly leaped up and shot into the distance at incredible speed, vanishing in an instant.
“This…” Su Chen raised an eyebrow. ’Do the Deceitful God’s Followers have this much pull around here?’
Su Chen couldn’t help but recall the true form of the Deceitful God he had witnessed during the Delirious Words Trial. ’I guess… this makes sense.’
’The vast majority of Netherworld Creatures have no consciousness. Only those that reach a certain level can develop a faint glimmer of awareness.’
Su Chen scanned the boundless surroundings. ’This place is too vast. It’s nearly impossible for me to find the Spiritual Essence on my own.’
He thought of a plan. It was risky, but worth a try.
’I need to think this through carefully,’ he mused. ’First, I have to make sure my Spiritual Power can keep up. I need to be able to stay here for a sufficiently long time.’
He tried activating his Reverser ability. Through some unseen connection, he soon felt a surge of Spiritual Power welling up from an unknown source.
’It still works. That’s good. This means I can last much longer.’
After confirming this, Su Chen returned to the real world, emerging from the spatial interstice.
’Staying in the spatial interstice also consumes Spiritual Power, but I might have to spend a long time in the Nether Realm as a Priest, and my physical appearance will change. It would be a huge hassle if someone were to barge in. Better to be safe.’
After a moment of thought, he carefully erased the symbols he had just inscribed on his body.
After thinking through the steps, Su Chen took a deep breath and plunged back into the Nether Realm.
This time, he didn’t conceal the vibrant vitality of his Spiritual Power. Su Chen could distinctly feel a faint, ever-present malice.
Nearby, some of the Netherworld Creatures that had been crawling on the ground began to stir.
After annihilating a few Netherworld Creatures with crimson lightning, Su Chen shook his head. ’No, this is still too slow.’
Suddenly, he leaped into the air. Crimson lightning radiated outward, forming a Thunder Prison as he broadcasted his spiritual presence without any attempt at concealment.
Soon, Su Chen felt tangible malice converging from all directions. One after another, horrifying presences washed over him.
“…Sweet scent…”
“…Take… take…”
“…Delicious… delicious…”
Amidst the frenzied and chaotic malice, there was a common thread: ravenous desire.
Black lightning crackled. Su Chen’s heart lurched as a gigantic, decaying black bird appeared in the sky, hurtling toward him at extreme speed. Its wings spanned dozens of meters, and its ferocious cry was terrifying.
’This presence… in the real world, it would be comparable to a Tier Five Professional.’ Su Chen’s expression turned grim.
And that was only the first. The ground trembled as a giant with two heads—one large, one small—strode forward. It was roaring, and though the sounds were unintelligible, the meaning was bizarrely clear.
“…Mine… mine… mine…”
Both creatures held a naked desire for Su Chen and had also noticed each other. Black lightning arced between them as the ground rumbled.
’A living person’s Spirit Body is like a prime cut of meat in here.’ Su Chen hadn’t expected it to be this effective.
He didn’t wait any longer. Instantly, he disguised himself as a Faceless Ghost Priest, and a sinister, eerie aura radiated from him.
The effect was visible to the naked eye. The two Netherworld Creatures stopped their standoff and turned to look at him in unison. Terror filled their three pairs of mismatched eyes as they let out shrieks and wails.
“…Faceless One!”
“…Faceless One!”
Su Chen could feel their spiritual fluctuations. Seeing that they were about to flee, he immediately commanded, “Come back!”
Although they couldn’t understand his words, they could feel the intent in his consciousness.
Both creatures froze. After a brief moment of internal struggle, fear won out. The giant black bird folded its wings and trembled, while the giant squatted on the ground, its two heads hanging low, not daring to move a muscle.
’They’re this terrified?’ Su Chen was surprised. The effect was even better than he had imagined.
“Come here,” he commanded through a wave of spiritual energy. The giant and the black bird reluctantly shuffled closer.
“What are your names?” Su Chen asked, but was met with only silence.
Su Chen asked again, “Why are you so afraid of me?”
“…Faceless One… Faceless One…”
The two creatures responded in unison. Su Chen frowned. ’For creatures of this level, their consciousness is surprisingly weak.’
He had originally planned to ask about this place, but from the looks of it, they probably didn’t know anything.
“Do you know of Spiritual Essence?” he asked.
The two creatures fell silent.
’Troublesome…’ Su Chen sighed in frustration, forced to do his best to describe its general appearance.
The black bird remained blank, but the two-headed giant sent out a mental pulse. “…Ate… delicious.”
’Ate it.’ Su Chen fell silent and sighed helplessly. He scanned his surroundings one last time, then disconnected from the realm.
He tried the same method several more times, switching locations, but found no clues about the Spiritual Essence.
“This is turning into a real hassle. I have no idea how big this Nether Realm actually is,” Su Chen muttered, rubbing his temples. He chugged some concentrated Nutrient Liquid, waiting for his body to absorb and store it for later conversion.
This method allowed him to rapidly recover his Physical Strength and Spiritual Power.
For several days straight, Su Chen remained in the Gravity Chamber, not once stepping out. He constantly connected to and disconnected from the Nether Realm, searching for the Spiritual Essence.
He even put his training on hold. After all, once he advanced to the Spiritualist profession, the resulting boost to his Talent would more than make up for the lost time.
Unfortunately, he still had nothing to show for his efforts.
’It’s this hard to find? How in the world did Yuan Capital manage it?’ Su Chen wondered after disconnecting to rest again. Just then, a persistent knocking started at his door.
He opened the door to find Ming Lin, who looked rather grim. His expression softened slightly upon seeing Su Chen. “I thought you weren’t here.”
“Did you need something?” Su Chen asked, inviting him in.
“You don’t know?” Ming Lin asked, surprised. Then he shook his head. “Then again, you probably weren’t paying attention.”
“What’s going on?” Su Chen raised an eyebrow.
“That guy, Hongxuan, has started issuing challenges,” Ming Lin said gravely.
’Challenges?’ Su Chen pictured the person he had seen at Wei Yinsuo’s memorial service.
“So he’s issuing challenges. What’s the big deal? Didn’t you say you’ve all sparred before?” Su Chen asked, confused.
“This is different.” Ming Lin shook his head. “Before, even if we were at the same Tier, our strengths varied because of how far we’d each developed our professions. A spar was just a spar, and no one took it too seriously. But it’s different now.”
“Don’t tell me he…” Su Chen’s expression turned odd.
“That’s right. The official challenge arena,” Ming Lin said coldly.
“Why are the people from Yuan Capital so into this stuff?” Su Chen was speechless.
“Yuan Capital has always been seen as weaker than Ying Feng in overall strength. Now that they have an opportunity, of course they’re going to try and push us down a notch.”
Ming Lin’s expression was grave. “This Hongxuan is incredibly strong. Several Inner Court Seeds have already fought him, and none of them could last a single exchange. He’s going to be very difficult to deal with.”
“Feng Ze is fighting him today. He should be able to force Hongxuan to reveal some of his techniques. Want to go watch?”
Su Chen shook his head. “Forget it. I’m not interested.”
“You…” Ming Lin was at a loss for words. Realizing he probably couldn’t persuade Su Chen, he had no choice but to leave.
’Challenges?’ After seeing Ming Lin out, Su Chen’s expression wavered.
