My Werewolf System - Chapter 1844: A Family Trip

After Gary had confirmed that the core members of the Howlers were successfully managing their own affairs and no longer required his immediate tactical oversight, he decided it was time to visit two people in particular. These were the two who had stayed by his side during his long recovery and who, for their own safety, had been living in hiding for what felt like an eternity.
Now that the threat of Unzoku and the rampaging Gluttons was practically over, the shadow of danger that had loomed over his family had finally begun to dissipate. His mother, Maya, and his sister, Amy, had been staying at a high-end hotel near the hospital. Budgeting was never a concern for Gary’s family anymore, considering his influence as the hidden king of Slough, and the luxury of the accommodations reflected that status.
Entering their suite, Gary saw that the two had been making the most of their time away from the chaos. They were enjoying the high-end room service, and a pair of masseuses were just finishing a session as he walked through the door.
“Gary! You’re awake!” Amy shouted, nearly tripping over a footstool to get to him.
“I can’t believe it… you’re really back,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling as tears of relief began to spill down her cheeks.
The reunion was bittersweet and filled with a warmth Gary had sorely missed. He didn’t flood them with the gritty details of the battle, but he gave them the one piece of news that mattered: the immediate danger had passed. He explained that they didn’t need to live out of suitcases anymore and that moving back to their home in Slough was finally a safe reality.
It was during this discussion that Maya proposed the idea of a family camping trip—a chance to reconnect away from the city. She had even insisted that he invite Xin. The relationship between Gary and Xin was official now, a fact known by the entire pack, and Maya was determined to get to know her potential future daughter-in-law on a more personal level. Gary couldn’t find it in his heart to deny his mother this simple request. While Maya was busy making the logistical arrangements, it left Gary and Amy alone for a rare, quiet moment to talk.
“I wanted to follow up on what you asked me about White,” Gary said, his expression turning serious. “I had the guys look into it, and I spent some time digging through our internal records myself, but it’s like she’s vanished into thin air. No one can get anything on her. I even went to Olivia to ask about White’s past, and honestly, that’s where things get truly bizarre.”
“What do you mean?” Amy asked, her brow furrowing with concern.
“Olivia couldn’t remember her at all,” Gary replied, his voice dropping. “She didn’t even recognize the name or the description. I know it sounds impossible, but we’ve seen similar memory-wiping effects before. I just can’t figure out when or how someone could have scrubbed her from everyone’s mind so thoroughly.”
There was a sharp ache in Amy’s heart. She had truly considered White a close friend, and to have her disappear without a single note or a final goodbye felt like a betrayal of their bond. All she could do now was look out at the horizon and hope that, wherever White was, she was safe.
“Alright, everyone!” Maya announced, returning to the room with a bright smile. “The preparations are set, and I have one more surprise… there’s a fifth person coming with us.”
That was how Gary’s entire family, including Xin and his father, Dean, ended up heading toward the camping district. The area was a vast expanse of rolling green fields, flanked by ancient forests and rugged hills. It was the kind of place where the air felt clean and the weight of the world felt a little lighter.
Deep in the woods, the family found a secluded clearing to set up camp. While the three women worked together to pitch the tents and organize the supplies, Gary and Dean headed out into the forest to scout the area and gather firewood. As they hiked through the underbrush, the silence between father and son was heavy, until Dean finally broke it.
“It’s hard for me to talk to you properly,” Dean said, his eyes fixed on the path ahead. “And I know that’s my fault. I wasn’t there for any of you while you were growing up. I missed so much.”
“It’s alright, Dad,” Gary replied, hoisting a heavy branch onto his shoulder. “You explained why you had to stay away. After everything I’ve been through recently… I’m starting to understand the kind of impossible choices you must have faced.”
“Regardless of the reasons, there were better ways I could have handled it,” Dean said, stopping to look at his son. A large, genuine smile spread across his face. “But the main thing I wanted to tell you, Gary, is that you’ve done one heck of a job. You’ve managed to accomplish more than I ever imagined possible for a kid from Slough.”
Dean’s voice cracked slightly. “I’m so proud of you, and I don’t think you even realize how much. What’s worse is I’ve spent so long away that I don’t even know how to show it properly.”
Dean stopped walking and turned to Gary, looking him directly in the eyes. Gary could see the moisture building, tears on the very verge of overflowing.
“I’ve decided that I’m going to fight as well,” Dean said firmly. “What you’ve gone through already is enough for ten lifetimes. I’m going to do everything in my power to help you, no matter what happens in the future.”
Gary’s heightened senses picked up the erratic, emotional thrum of his father’s heartbeat. He watched as the first few tears finally fell.
“In the future?” Gary asked, his instincts immediately on alert. “Dad, it sounds like you’re talking about something specific… like there’s a threat you’re expecting. What is it that you know?”
