“Captain Shin, doesn’t that bother you?” Soi Fon asked.
She found the remarks from the other Soul Reapers infuriating and wanted to teach them a lesson, to make them understand that not just anyone could speak so freely about her captain.
“The more you try to shut people up, the worse your reputation gets. It’s better to just let it go.”
Shin’s calm words seemed to be the only thing that could pacify Soi Fon. Even Yoruichi probably couldn’t have settled her down so easily.
“Come on, let’s take a walk.”
Shin led Soi Fon out of the 2nd Division barracks. Yoruichi, who was elsewhere, had no idea they had left.
Soi Fon was delighted to be leaving with Shin, but she was also curious. ‘Where is Captain Shin taking me? Are we heading back to the 2nd Division’s headquarters?’
“Curious about where we’re going?” Shin asked, noticing the question in her eyes.
Soi Fon nodded. She was indeed very curious.
“We’re going to the 6th Division. Byakuya Kuchiki has been promoted to captain. We should go offer our congratulations.”
Shin explained.
“Oh, Byakuya Kuchiki is a captain now? Why wasn’t there a meeting to announce it?” Soi Fon found it strange. Captain promotions were usually announced at a formal gathering.
“There’s no need for a meeting when it’s a foregone conclusion. Byakuya was destined for the position. Neither Captain-Commander Yamamoto nor any of the other captains had any objections.”
The 6th Division was a noble squad, and as the head of the Kuchiki clan, Byakuya had the full backing of the nobility.
More importantly, he had the strength to back it up. He might not have any major achievements to his name yet—though there was one mission that could have earned him incredible renown: capturing the Visoreds.
But that was an impossible task. Even if Byakuya had wanted to take it on, his grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki, would never have allowed it.
The Visoreds consisted of several former captains and lieutenants. Sending Byakuya after them would have been a suicide mission. Those exiles wouldn’t go easy on a fellow Soul Reaper—they were now enemies of the Soul Society.
Though they would eventually return to the Soul Society after Aizen’s defeat, right now, they undoubtedly harbored a deep resentment. They had been framed, hunted, and branded as traitors. It was only natural that their feelings toward the Gotei 13 had soured.
“Should we bring a gift?”
Soi Fon asked. Since they were congratulating someone on becoming a captain, a gift seemed appropriate.
“You’re right, I almost forgot. We should bring something.”
Shin might be a bit of a cheapskate, but he wouldn’t neglect a necessary formality and let the 2nd Division be embarrassed.
In the end, Soi Fon insisted on paying for the gift.
“Soi Fon, I’ll have to properly train you when we get back,” Shin said.
“Thank you, Captain Shin!” Soi Fon’s face lit up with excitement. With the captain’s personal guidance, her strength would surely improve much faster.
She was driven to become stronger, wanting to be able to protect both Captain Shin and Lady Yoruichi. At the moment, her skills were far from adequate. It was all she could do to not need protecting herself. The thought filled her with frustration. As for the money she had just spent, it was of no concern to her.
———————————
When they arrived at the 6th Division barracks, they found that they weren’t the only visitors.
“Looks like we’re not the only ones who had this idea,” Shin said with a smile, spotting Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake.
“Captain Shin.”
Ukitake and the others greeted them as they approached.
“Are you also here to congratulate Byakuya on his promotion?” Shin asked.
“Of course. And to curry a little favor with the Kuchiki clan,” Kyōraku replied with his usual candor.
“By the way, is it true that Kenpachi challenged you and you defeated him without breaking a sweat?”
At Kyōraku’s question, Shin simply nodded. “Kenpachi is still recovering.”
In a way, Shin had done the other captains a favor. If Kenpachi weren’t injured, he’d probably be challenging them right now.
“Though I hear the members of your squad are making you quite the villain,” Kyōraku added with a grin. Shin’s reputation in the Seireitei had been taking a nosedive lately.
“I don’t really care about that,” Shin shrugged. He wasn’t particularly concerned with his reputation.
“Still, I think you two should be a little more discreet. There are still people in the Seireitei who are suspicious of your relationship,” Shin said, looking at Kyōraku and Ukitake.
“Ahem.” Ukitake coughed lightly, not because of his illness, but out of sheer awkwardness.
“Can we please not talk about that? Besides, if it weren’t for you, would anyone even be bringing it up?” Kyōraku asked irritably.
“Hahahahaha.” Shin laughed heartily but dropped the subject. If he kept picking at that particular scab, Kyōraku and Ukitake might just decide to fight him.
After spending half the day at the 6th Division barracks, Shin and Soi Fon returned to the 2nd Division.
“Where have you two been? Do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for you?”
Yoruichi demanded, clearly annoyed. They had disappeared without a word, and worse, without her. It was unforgivable.
“We went to the 6th Division. Byakuya became a captain, so we went to celebrate,” Shin explained.
“Then why didn’t you invite me?” Yoruichi’s anger subsided slightly. At least they hadn’t gone to the 4th Division. If they had, she’d be in an even worse mood.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to her: Had Retsu Unohana been at the 6th Division?
She knew asking Shin might not get her a straight answer, but Soi Fon wouldn’t lie to her. If the day ever came when little Soi Fon deceived her, she would have truly failed as a mentor.
“Soi Fon, let me ask you, was Retsu Unohana there?” Yoruichi asked.
Hearing Lady Yoruichi’s question, Soi Fon shook her head.
“No, I didn’t see Captain Unohana at the 6th Division. Why do you ask, Lady Yoruichi?” Soi Fon asked curiously.
Yoruichi breathed a sigh of relief. Good, she wasn’t there.
Seeing Soi Fon’s curious expression, she just shook her head, offering no explanation.
