Senjumaru Shutara didn’t linger long at the Second Division. After multiple failed attempts to persuade Shin, she realized further effort was futile and chose not to overstay her welcome.
Since Shin had made his stance crystal clear—he would absolutely not join the Zero Division—there was no point in her wasting any more breath.
“If you ever change your mind, you are welcome to find me,” Senjumaru said as a parting remark before taking her leave.
Once she was gone, Yoruichi fixed her gaze intensely on Shin.
“Shin, listen to me. It’s best not to go to the Zero Division. Honestly, it’s not as great as it sounds,” Yoruichi advised, trying to sound objective.
In reality, she just wanted Shin to stay in the Second Division. She was terrified that if he went up to the Soul King Palace, she wouldn’t be able to find him.
“I know. I’m not going to the Zero Division. You can rest easy on that front,” Shin assured her.
Going to the Zero Division was out of the question. Shin would never join them—the place just seemed dreadfully boring.
“That’s good,” Yoruichi said, visibly relaxing.
Since Shin had given his word, Yoruichi believed him. If he said he wouldn’t go, he wouldn’t.
“However…” Shin smiled slyly. “My paperwork is now your responsibility.”
He casually dumped his workload onto Yoruichi. Her expression instantly soured as she glared at him.
“If you don’t help, I might have no choice. I might just have to head up to the Zero Division after all,” Shin said, looking at the fuming Yoruichi with a grin.
“Hmph! Fine, go then! Leave! If you leave, that’s just perfect—I’ll finally become Captain again!”
Yoruichi huffed angrily. Before she met Shin, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d been this frustrated. Now, it seemed like a daily occurrence.
“You said it, not me. I’m really leaving then. Senjumaru probably hasn’t gone far—I can still catch up to her.” Shin stood up immediately, feigning intent to leave.
Seeing him stand up, Yoruichi’s expression shifted. She shot him a resentful look before gritting her teeth. “Fine! I promise, okay? I’ll do it!”
“Thanks a bunch,” Shin smiled at her. He had her wrapped around his finger. He knew she would do it, and he knew she couldn’t refuse him.
“Just this once! I am absolutely not helping you next time,” Yoruichi declared.
Shin nodded in agreement, though anyone who believed his nod would be a fool.
“Don’t worry. I guarantee I’ll only ask for your help this one time. I definitely won’t need your help in the future.”
Shin gave his guarantee, but Yoruichi found it hard to believe him. After all, he had said the exact same thing in the past.
“Forget it.”
Yoruichi decided not to argue with him. She grabbed the stack of files and went to find Soi Fon. Naturally, looking for Soi Fon wasn’t for anything social—it was to dump the work on her.
“Sigh, poor Soi Fon,” Shin couldn’t help but lament.
However, Shin didn’t run over to give the files to Soi Fon himself. He couldn’t. If he went to give them to her personally, the responsibility might bounce back to him. It was safer to stay put and play innocent.
Let Soi Fon suffer a bit for now—he would compensate her another day.
Shin hadn’t been in his office long when the door slid open, and Retsu Unohana walked in.
“Shin, I heard Senjumaru Shutara was here?”
Unohana knew Senjumaru. In fact, she was acquainted with several members of the Zero Division.
“Yeah, Senjumaru was here. She came to invite me to join the Zero Division.” Shin nodded at Unohana.
“Just as I suspected.”
Even before arriving, Unohana had guessed that Senjumaru’s goal was to recruit Shin. However, knowing Shin’s personality, the likelihood of him refusing was high. He had probably already turned her down.
After all, if he hadn’t refused and had joined, he wouldn’t still be sitting here.
“You rushed over here because you were afraid I’d join the Zero Division, didn’t you, Retsu??” Shin asked with a smile.
“Indeed. Although, I wasn’t overly worried. The chances of someone with your personality joining them are slim.”
Unohana admitted her concern, though it was mild.
“The Zero Division does rank above the Gotei 13. Joining them appears to be a promotion, but it doesn’t suit you.”
Shin loved his freedom and hated being tied down. The Zero Division members, unless there was an emergency, rarely left the Soul King Palace.
Perhaps the Soul King Palace was a great place for cultivation due to the density of Reishi, but did Shin really need to train anymore?
He didn’t need to train, so he had no reason to choose that place. He had zero interest in the Soul King Palace. Perhaps he would visit in the future, but not now.
“What are you doing here?”
Just then, Yoruichi walked in from outside. Seeing Unohana standing there, she asked with a hint of surprise and annoyance.
“Am I not allowed to visit Captain Shin?” Unohana replied calmly, looking at Yoruichi.
“Of course you can, but probably not right now. Our Captain has very important matters to attend to. Isn’t that right, Captain?” Yoruichi looked toward Shin for backup.
“Not really. I don’t have anything going on,” Shin said, pretending not to see Yoruichi’s pleading gaze. Yoruichi ground her teeth in frustration.
“Captain Unohana.”
Soi Fon, standing beside Yoruichi, greeted Unohana politely. Then, she took the stack of files to the corner and silently began processing them.
In the beginning, Soi Fon wasn’t good at paperwork. But everything can be learned. After some time and practice, Soi Fon was now incredibly efficient at handling documents.
Because she handled so much of it, she was actually faster than Shin.
Practice truly makes perfect. Soi Fon had reached a level of mastery born of necessity… and tragedy.
She was merely the 3rd Seat of the Second Division—this work shouldn’t have fallen to her. But she had the misfortune of encountering two incredibly irresponsible superiors.
Both Shin and Yoruichi were hands-off bosses. Shin dumped the work on Yoruichi, Yoruichi dumped it on Soi Fon, and Soi Fon… had no one to dump it on.
She couldn’t give it to the 4th Seat—he couldn’t handle it. Besides, Soi Fon wouldn’t trust him with it. As long as it was a task assigned by Lord Shin or Lady Yoruichi, no matter how troublesome, she would complete it diligently.
Soi Fon never complained, a trait Shin greatly admired. That was why he often took time to offer her guidance.
Well, “took time” might be the wrong phrase, since Shin was usually free anyway. It wasn’t exactly a sacrifice of his schedule.
