- Six Hundred And Seventy-Two

Arisu-san returned Haru and Hinata to our estate, as well as bringing back Ileana and her grandmother, or guardian… it’s a bit hard to parse their true relationship. Grandmother is fine, I think… Valeska. I was a bit surprised that Eri had returned with them, but when questioned why, Eri had shot me a black-eyed stare of amused derision.
“You know why.” she’d told me, before smiling at Ileana rather warmly, her black, furry tail and cat-like ears catching the Dhampir’s attention. “I’ve done with Kami-Blessed, so I’m going to spend some time getting to know our newcomer here. After all, I have a feeling we’re going to be very close. Sisters, in fact.”
Ileana had seemed surprised at that, and a little hesitant, backing away behind her grandmother, but Hinata had agreed brightly, and Eri, at my disbelief, snorted, using one hand to gently smack my shoulder. “You know what I’m talking about, Akio.” she’d insisted and this had led to this moment. We were heading to where Su Caihong and Su Liene were sleeping, attended to by the finest female military physicians around the clock, just to check on them, while we were here, but Eri was lecturing me on Princesses, Hinata and Haru both nodding along as if it was entirely natural.
Which sadly I suppose it is. But that just means I’m going to keep an open mind, not push things. If it happens, it happens, but Ileana is like a frightened cat, no pun intended, Eri, so she needs to be made to feel safe, treated with care, not pressured. Still, as Ileana watched on with wary bemusement, Valeska using the translation device to listen in, Eri was warming to the subject.
“Ileana is one of the Princesses of the Six Paths, you’re pretty sure of that?” I nodded, and she continued. “I see. So yes, if she is, you have to protect her, don’t you?”
“Protect?” Ileana managed, and I nodded.
“Don’t worry. I won’t say I can keep you safe from all danger, that’s not your… destiny… I guess.” I still didn’t like talking about such things, I believed we had free will, that we weren’t puppets tied to strings not of our own making, but… it’s like Tsukiko says, it’s the sun’s destiny to rise each morning. Nobody expects it won’t. Some events just have a weight, a mass to them, and like mass warping spacetime, they drag in those around them, even without directly touching us. The weight of probable futures…
“You’ll surely have to fight, whether you want to or not, but… there’s no need to do it alone anymore, and we’ll train you to leverage your abilities, to be strong. There’s nothing more reassuring than strength.” I finished, and Eri shook her head.
“Wrong.” she told Ileana and Valeska. “There’s one thing more reassuring, and that’s having Akio on our side. Though honestly…” Eri flexed, materialising her axe in a buzz of purple sparks. “…I like to think I’m a rather reassuring girl to have watching your back too.” She winked playfully, taking Ileana aback, though Valeska merely snorted, amused.
I’m a bit stunned too. When did you get so sociable, Eri?
Oh come on. I suppose I deserve that, other than you and Aiko, I’ve always been a loner, not caring for or about others. But like you, I’ve had to change too. And honestly… I don’t hate it. I like those you like, Akio, and even some of the others from the training school, the Pilgrimage, I get along fine with. Don’t get jealous though… her thoughts almost purred with amusement. …no matter how many friends I have, you’re always my number one!
I’m sure. I’m just happy if you’re happy…
“Everyone here is strong.” I promised. “After all, I told you we defeated a Cardinal of the Church which was harassing and harrying you. But… yes, I believe you survived for a reason, and I’d very much like you to keep living. Oh, you as well, Valeska.”
“I should think so.” the old woman grumbled. We were then interrupted by Hana, who came out of the room where our patients were, her five golden tails waving behind her.
“Hush now. There are patients here. And you would not wish to annoy grandmother.” She tittered quietly, chest heaving. Today, her kimono was a pure white, though it was opened at the front, exposing generous cleavage as ever. “Oh, and before you wonder just how I am here…” she grinned toothily.
Ileana was wary but fascinated by the Kitsune, and Valeska was rubbing at her eyes in disbelief, remaking that she had seen more impossible creaturi legendare these past few weeks than she could ever have imagined.
“…I can come and go in your lands now as I please. After all, I am yours.” Hana smiled knowingly, and Eri shook her head.
“I’m not going to argue with you. I hate you less than you probably think, but I get why Shaeula doesn’t like you. But if you’re here, at least make yourself useful.”
“Oh, I am, I am.” Hana insisted playfully. “I am keeping my dear grandmother company while she observes her sad vigil. Pilgrimage was rather entertaining, at first, But I have travelled Japan plenty. The novelty is waning. Though I am very enamoured of what you have achieved. Truly worthy of the man I gave my name, hidden tail and very spirit to.” She winked, her blue eyes like clear pools of water, and Eri merely shrugged.
“How is she?” I asked quietly, as we prepared to enter, and Hana shrugged, enjoying the attention I couldn’t help but give her as her kimono shifted perilously.
“You know how she is. Too proud to admit she is worried still, yet too stubborn to properly thank you. She is deeply grateful, you know. Your efforts have touched her heart.”
“She’s thanked me enough. I owe her…”
Eri wasn’t the only one wincing, Hinata and Haru did as well. At my quizzical gaze, Haru shook her head, exasperated.
“I was already expecting today to be thoroughly unpleasant, Akio. Don’t make it worse by being frustratingly dense.”
“I’m not.” I insisted, a little irritated. “Yes, I get it. I didn’t help her rescue them because she protected Asha and the Territory. But that doesn’t change that I don’t need her thanks. That she’s rescued them is more than enough reward for me. I just want to see her smile, genuinely, when they wake up and reunite.”
Haru blinked. Hold on a minute, that seemed dangerously like… self-awareness and understanding the hopes of others. Are you well, Akio? Should I ask the doctors here to examine you?
Wow, how rude! I channelled my sis in my thoughts as we stepped inside, to see that a doctor and nurse, female of course, were standing by the various machines the two Cultivators were linked up to, the soft beeps ringing out in a comforting, steady rhythm of overlapping sound. Mae was sitting on a couch that had been brought in, her tails ringing her like a reddish-golden (perhaps one could say Hihi’irokane) halo, her emerald eyes pensive as she watched them sleep in silence.
I’ll have you know… after the events of yesterday, I came to a realisation…
Another one? Eri joined in now, and Shaeula, even distant, hopped on the bandwagon.
How many is that now? Still, I do suppose each builds upon the others. You have not been so indecisive recently, Akio. I do hope now you can finally face others and face yourself honestly.
This is… curious.Haru’s thoughts were puzzled. I can latch onto your mind from even this great distance, Shaeula, and… no, it doesn’t work. But it… nearly works. Maybe…
I wasn’t sure what Haru was trying to do, but she realised that, and shared that she was trying to connect and read others’ thoughts through the distant Shaeula.
I see. If you can do that, it opens up endless possibilities. I was impressed. And yes, I know. But this time… I’ve got nowhere else to retreat to. Miyu, Michiru… I have to face facts, many love me, for many reasons, and… I can and do love many. But… there is no cause for haste. Nor indecisiveness.
That’s right. I do still hope we don’t end up like King Solomon, though I’m not holding my breath… Eri’s thoughts were rueful, and Shaeula added her own laughter.
As for Mae… it’s not like she’s in the right frame of mind to consider deep emotions or her future right now, not until we’ve saved the Su family, but… honestly, I’m extremely fond of her. I never thought I was into older women…
How hurtful… Rose giggled. And best not let Divine Taṇhā hear you say that…
You should call her Tan. Eri suggested. After all, you’re one of us, Rose. Even though you’re far away… you won’t break your marriage vows and ditch Akio, will you?
Never. By the Allfather and the Great Mother, I, Rossweisse, would die first.
Nor shall I. My given pledge can never be sundered. Lin agreed hurriedly, and Eri radiated satisfaction.
Women are all eighteen at heart forever. Haru insisted. But if I’m not mistaken, did you just admit to wanting to pursue Tamamo-no-Mae? Romantically? I mean, she’s… she’s… Tamamo-no-Mae!
I’m not going to lie to myself. It might not work out, but especially in her case, we have all the time in the world. For the others… Miyu and Michiru have made it plain they desire me, and during Miyu’s Dance, I certainly felt some desire towards them. But we all need to step back and take it slow, make sure the feelings are mutual and genuine, not inspired by the wrong emotions, the passion of her Dance, my… need to cherish those who are my Vassals. There are others too… honestly, Yu-mi’s making it very hard for me to turn her down, and there’s always Bell and Teare. I know their pursuit of me is genuine now, and I do rather like them. Damn, there’s so little of me to go around. Maybe I need to become a God just to get around that!
The silence stretched seemingly endlessly in my thoughts, though it was a mere breath in reality, before Eri’s mental shrug echoed. It’s nothing I didn’t expect. And I’d much rather know where we all stand than worry and fret about it. But… There was a strange hesitancy in her thoughts now, as if she wanted to speak but wasn’t sure she should. Then Shaeula spoke for her.
Is there not someone else you should be chasing, Akio?
No, I don’t think so. Okay, sure, I know there are others who like me, and I’ll admit to being very fond of some other women, but I’m not going to make a move on mere fondness. I’m approaching serious relationships seriously, that’s all…
It seems there’s a lot of the previous Akio left. I’m not sure whether to be happy or annoyed… I’m sorry.
I wasn’t sure why Eri was apologising, but our mental conversation trailed off, Mae standing, nodding at us. She was looking a little dishevelled, her own bright red kimono somewhat rumpled and stained, but on seeing me her expression shifted, and she moved aside some of her tails, patting the sofa beside her. Ignoring the painful gaze from Eri, I sat down beside her, and sighed, seeing her fur all matted and tangled.
Patting her tail, I glanced over at the beds. Caihong and Liena had both recovered physically now, at least Materially, yet the damage to their Chakra networks, Dantians, meridians and acupoints was truly catastrophic and near total. Yet… As I continued to pat Mae’s tail idly, everyone else frozen, I smiled as warmly as I could at her. “You want to keep looking your best self, don’t you? Tonight, take a break and I’ll groom your tails again.”
Hana let out an envious gulp, and I sighed. “If you want, your granddaughter can come too. But… everything will be fine. Trust me. In fact…” I grinned boldly, trying to reassure her. “…I’ve come up with a suitable plan.”
“Are you… certain?” Mae asked, oddly vulnerable, and I tightened my grip on her tail. Ileana seemed rather interested in the Chinese women as they slept, and Eri was explaining how they had been rescued from an endless sleep in ice.
“Just… just like me.” Ileana bit her lip, regret on her face.
“There’s nothing certain, but I have a very good idea.” I promised. Turning to Hana, I asked her a question. “Do you remember Uranai’s prophecy about freeing Mae? Past the wolf moon, holding the scabbard of immortality, the fields shall be fallow, but death is merely a shadow.” I quoted her, and Hana nodded slowly, considering.
“Indeed. By then, your Tree and your Dryad would surely have been slain, but… if you retrieve the scabbard which supposedly heals all wounds…” Hana understood.
“Yet, such miraculous Healings do not repair such great destruction.” Mae grimaced. “Else with your Skills, or Bintara you would have restored them already… what is lost does not simply return.”
“Yes, but… you can’t change the past, but what if you can trick it?” My confidence must have reached her, as Mae gingerly reached out a hand, cupping my cheek, pulling my head so that I was gazing into her emerald eyes.
“How charming…” Hinata tittered, and Eri rolled her eyes, and I noticed that at some point she’d been holding Haru’s hand.
“I… shall trust you. I was resigned to waiting, watching… yet, Liena is already stirring. Her Cultivation was not so entwined with her being. Her Golden Core has shattered, the Stove cold, her Crimson Palace crumbled. Yet she was still largely human. Caihong’er…” Mae shook her head.
“Don’t worry. If this doesn’t work, we have other options, but I’m confident Ellie will aid us. She’s too kind-hearted to turn down the opportunity to help others who have suffered like she has. You’ll be reunited, the three of you, soon enough. You waited so very long, what are a few more days, or weeks? Merely a blink of the eyes, and you’ll be happy together again.”
“We.” Mae insisted, and I raised an eyebrow.
“We. Do not make me repeat myself, it is frustrating.” Her fingers dug into my cheek. “I shall tell Caihong’er and Liena tales of your efforts, though… I fear Caihong’er will loathe you.” Mae let out a laugh, which seemed bright, but I could tell was full of melancholy below the surface. “You are a lustful young master indeed, willing to sink your fangs into anyone who takes your fancy.”
“Not anyone…” Eri’s tone carried a rather sharp edge, and I blinked at her, surprised by her unusual reaction.
“If you look at numbers, yes, can’t argue with that.” Hinata agreed. Today she was in her full Adamant finery, yet it also somewhat resembled a business suit, with the long, tight black pencil skirt and silver shirt, paired with a black jacket. Of course, the material was armoured fibres and carefully crafted by Dwarven artisans, and the military cap changed the feel, but even so, Hinata seemed ready to go to a different kind of battle, which made sense for today.
“But if that was truly the case, then things would be very different.” Hinata finished, with a soft giggle.
“Perhaps so.” Mae agreed. “I cannot help but see the shadow of such rulers within him. His grip is… tenacious.” Her tails shivered. “Worse…” she trailed off, glancing away from me, towards the women, and Haru inclined her head in a nod, lips pursed. Then Mae released my face, long nails trailing down my cheek and neck softly, before she withdrew her hand. “I do appreciate you coming to see them, and me. Rest assured, while I am here, none shall trouble this place. Though now, I sense a powerful barrier here. Even I would take some time to breach it.”
“Yeah, Rank Four is a whole different game, especially when I’ve double-strengthened it with an Anchor Spire.” I agreed, standing. I nodded respectfully to the medical staff, who honestly looked pale, probably wrung out by having to be in the presence of the mythical nine-tailed fox herself. With one last look at the two unconscious Cultivators, both of them absolutely stunning, exactly matching what one would think of when describing ‘peerless jade beauties’, though Caihong was rich and ripe, whereas Liena seemed innocent and pure, I spoke parting words.
“So, tonight, Mae…”
Instead of answering, she was still gazing at the girls, and after a moment of silence, Eri nodded. “If Akio wants to cheer you up, fine. We did have plans, and they’ll still go ahead, but we can fit in one…”
At Hana’s whine, Eri sighed. “…two more. Since it’s just some care for an unhappy woman….” She then glanced at Hana, her black eyes rather flinty. “…and grooming an unruly pet.”
“How cold you are, Eri.” Hana chuckled. “Though if you mean to dismay me, try harder. I can curl up at the hearth and lick his feet if you wish. Lick other things too…”
“Sorry, but that’s just for us to suck on.” Eri responded with a barbed crudity. “If you want a lollipop, go look in the fridge.”
As Ileana stared on blankly, Valeska coughed, and in hesitant Japanese, thanks to her device, she asked them to stop. “I understand, I am no prude, but my little light is rather innocent. Please don’t fill her head with lustful nonsense.”
“Fine.” Eri agreed. “Anyway, are we done?”
I nodded, and as we left, Ileana spoke. “So, those women. They were like me then?”
“Yeah. Though whatever sleep you had wasn’t as gruelling. They were deeply wounded before being frozen, which is hardly a safe process, and worse… there was a spiritual beast parasitising them, causing further catastrophic damage. It’s a miracle they still live. But since they do, we’ll restore them both. Like I said…” I grinned pridefully. “…I’ve got one very solid idea, and a couple of less fleshed-out ones. Worst case, Daiyu has to step up and reach Sainthood herself, so we can see what that entails.”
“That’s a lot of pressure.” Hinata giggled. “But she’d do it for you, Akio.”
“I’d rather she do it for herself, Cultivation is her life’s work. That’s why it’s our last resort.” I insisted, and Eri addressed the Romanian pair as we got into a waiting limousine to ferry us to our first destination for our spy hunt, the Ministry.
“That goes without saying.” Hinata agreed. “But you’re our life too.” She snuggled up against me in the back seats, while Eri took my other side, and Haru sat opposite us, next to Ileana and Valeska. “So I know if I was Daiyu, I’d feel more motivated than ever if you asked me for an impossible favour.”
“You see?” Eri nodded at Ileana. “Akio might worry you a bit, being as you’re a young woman alone in the world, oh, sorry, apart from your grandmother…” she corrected. “…but really, he’s very kind. And we are too. So don’t worry. At least relax for now. Yes, you’ll be busy soon enough, but none of us are going to put you to work immediately.”
Haru, see anything interesting? …Haru? Haru…?
Her thoughts didn’t respond to me, and after Eri shot me an exasperated glance, Haru finally responded.
They’re clean, unless they’re better at hiding their thoughts than the ninjas. Which is unlikely, as unlike those troublesome pests, Ileana and Valeska have no way of knowing about my abilities, so have no need to guard themselves. It seems they are what they appear to be. It’s really quite tragic. The memories of the attack by the Church…
If it’s too much or brings back bad memories for you, then there’s no need…
Hah.She interrupted my thought with a long sigh. You know you baby me too much, Akio? I’m a grown woman, and I’m Undersecretary to the Minister of Spiritual Matters. I’m your Vassal, and a Chosen in my own right.
Eri had nodded out of nowhere, so it seemed she was listening in. Haru didn’t stop though, her thoughts rather exasperated.
Don’t get me wrong, I know you’re doing it with the best of intentions, and I’m truly touched you care about my wellbeing and happiness so much, it’s just… oh, I don’t know what I’m saying.
Eri’s nod froze, a rueful expression crossing her face, and I decided to smooth things over.
I guess you’re upset at having to deal with the spies. It makes sense. The list is… troubling. For you especially. Coworkers being plants must be painful for you. But don’t worry, I’ve always got your back!
Yes, you have. And again, I’ll always be more thankful than you could ever know, even reading my thoughts. It’s just… I’m not made of glass, you know? And I’m a woman. A rather beautiful one, I’ve always thought. At least everyone’s always said so…
That’s… well yes, of course you are. You’ve got a great figure and a cute face, but… I promise I never think of you that way. I’ll always have your best interests at heart.
Let’s change the subject. Haru’s thoughts were suddenly clipped and rapid, and I was relieved we were off that dangerous topic.
I don’t want to remind Haru of her sorrows. I just want her to smile. Always.
Her face stiffened up, and she murmured to Eri that she couldn’t stay mad at me, and I frowned, even as Eri and Hinata shook their heads.
“Oh, I think you can be a little aggrieved, Haru. Definitely.” Eri insisted, and I noticed her lack of honorific. That’s new, and not like Eri…
“It’s fine.” Haru insisted. “Anyway…” She smiled professionally at Ileana and Valeska. “We’ll be meeting the other refugees from Romania later, so if you would do me a favour and listen in? Natives might be able to discern little telltales even we can’t pick up.”
Valeska nodded, but Ileana frowned, anxiety in her eyes which shifted beautifully between blue, green and coppery gold as the light shifted. “I am afraid I would be little help. I was… sheltered in the past, only seeing the world though the tales of my tutors, and when I woke… I found myself confused and out of time. Without my blood child, my grandmother, I would have floundered, unable to make my way in the world.”
“Yes, but that’s not the point. After all…” Hinata pressed. “…you’ve got abilities others don’t have. Consider this your chance to learn just what you can do. The world might be strange to you, but… you don’t have to face it alone. You’ll adapt.”
Valeska nodded. “Yes, do remember, little light, you learned how to navigate our world, at least a little. You were proud of your ability to learn, so put it to use.”
“And speaking of putting things to use…” Hinata’s expression stiffened. She glanced at her phone, and Haru leaned over and patted her shoulder gently. “…hah…” She let out a long breath, straightening her military cap, with the Adamant High Commander insignia shining in… red? Seeing me having noticed, Hinata giggled, her sombre mood breaking.
“You’re not very observant. I changed it once I received the upgraded metal element. It’s Hihi’irokane now. It doesn’t do much, but… it’s a status symbol!”
“It seems a bit of a waste to me…” Eri sighed as the limousine pulled into the Ministry grounds. “I’d rather use power for something more practical.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll make some Hihi’irokane threads so you can have a new armoured battle dress forged.” Hinata promised. “But changing the silver and gold detailing on the Officer uniforms to such a metal really makes us stand out!”
It’s hard to stay irritated when they’re trying so hard not to be downcast.
Oh, speaking to me again, Haru?
Don’t be childish. I said I couldn’t stay mad at you, didn’t I? Haru’s thoughts were impish, teasing. But watching the two of them, I’m envious.
Oh?
Yes, envious. They are both so very… capable of clinging to happiness, despite their troubles. Capable of clinging to you, I might add. This… is going to be a hard day for us all. But perhaps an educational one. I could use a drink already…
Seems like I’m booked up tonight, but… you could come over beforehand?
A very tempting offer. If there’s time, perhaps I will. But for now…
“It’s time to deal with some outstanding matters…” Haru explained to our foreign guests. “…one of which is what to do with the remnants of the Church forces who attacked Japan. Perhaps you should see how we deal with them. And the other matter…”
Hinata had her phone out and was dialling Shaeula, her face set. As she picked up, Hinata gave her order.
“It’s time. You and Hyacinth gather them together and have Arisu-san ferry them over. Don’t take no for an answer. It’s all right to get a little rough, even with… yes. Yes. I’m sorry, but carelessness is still a problem. I leave it to you. It’s fine. We’re going to get some gifts, at least. Presents make bad news sting less.”
She hung up and then called Shige-san and Kira-san. If I’m on first name terms with Mayumi-chan’s grandfather now, no way I can’t be with Miyu’s. I know she said she’d handle it, but… what are we going to tell him? No, that’s an issue for another time.
Haru also pulled out her phone, sending rapid texts. As we parked up under the Ministry, I felt in control. Oh yeah, we own the land this Ministry was set up on, don’t we? Part of the initial deal. That’s… reassuring. Especially considering who is being transferred over for this…
“Right then.” Hinata, having hung up, leaned in for a kiss, and I gave it. It wasn’t a passionate one, just a quick peck of reassurance, and Eri didn’t refuse one either, though she was here more for Ileana than what we planned today.
“There’s no point moping. Haru, you’ll be taking point on this one, but we’re here to back you up if needed.”
“Got it.” Haru agreed, seemingly unbothered by Hinata’s unusual informality. “Putting it off doesn’t make the medicine taste any sweeter. Let’s take care of this. I’ll teach them not to make light of me! I’d die from shame if I let these rats slip out from under my oversight. Oh, wait, I can’t die, I’m already dead…”
Pleased Haru’s mood seemed to have recovered, I grinned myself, though it was probably a rather baleful one, as Ileana shivered. Yes, putting off an unpleasant task doesn’t make it vanish. And we need to tidy everything up before tomorrow…
***
Inside the Ministry, we were greeted by various staffers, who were of course still working despite it being the Christmas break. Sadly, politics never sleeps. One of the workers, a man a few years older than me, handsome in a rather average way, smiled broadly when he saw Haru.
“Suzuki-san, you’re here at last. Morita-sama has been pacing restlessly about the place waiting. We worried she’d wear furrows into the carpet, and the budget doesn’t stretch to replacing it.” He laughed boldly, his brown eyes fixed on Haru, who only shrugged, her expression rather cool.
“Don’t worry, Aonuma-san…” Haru’s pronunciation was clipped and professional, but I exchanged a glance with Eri and Hinata. Eri wiggled her feline ears, while Hinata shrugged slightly. Yeah, thought so…
“…I doubt we’ll be able to allay Morita-sama’s worries, in fact we’re bringing more work, but the sooner we get started, the sooner we can resolve it all. No time to stand around gossiping, Aonuma-san.”
The man, Aonuma-san, nodded reluctantly. Running a hand through his hair, sleeve of his nice suit sliding down to reveal a pretty decent watch, which I was able to tell as I had the eye for these matters now, he smiled winningly at her. “Yes, you’re right. Suzuki-san, want to grab a coffee after this? You could use a break…”
“Oh, I’d love to.” Haru replied professionally, and it wasn’t just me who noticed that she seemed entirely unenthused, as Hinata stifled a giggle with her hand and Eri rolled her black eyes exasperatedly. “But you know, I’m escorting some VIPs, and I’ll be busy with them afterwards. With Akio. You know, OshiroAkio?”
At Haru’s words he blinked, finally recognising me, and it was a fresh feeling, being ignored. He paused, before finally managing a greeting, and then bowing apologetically to Haru, scurrying off after promising to catch up with her soon. Haru watched him go and then sighed loudly.
“You know, he seemed a nice enough sort…” I began, only to wince as Eri kicked me in the shins. “But yes…” I changed what I was about to say. “…I know you’re probably not keen on the attention, considering.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t say that.” Haru managed after a moment, leading us further into the Ministry interior, where she was greeted cheerfully by her colleagues, including several faces I recognised, some of the Chinese Cultivators we’d captured after Kyoto, whom the Ministry took charge of, since I already had Daiyu, and she’d already stripped them of all their Cultivation possessions and made copies of their Sect knowledge.
It seems you’re very popular, Haru. I’d expect no less.
Flattery to cover up for your mistakes? So very you…
Out loud Haru continued. “It’s more… he’s not my type. Don’t get me wrong, before all… this… he might have been the sort of man daddy would love me to bring home, career bureaucrat, good university, decent family background, largely agreeable…”
I winced at her lukewarm praise. As a man, I’d hate to simply be agreeable…
No danger of that. Haru’s thoughts were filled with an amused edge. Bland you are most certainly not, Akio.
“…but now…” We reached an interview room, and my Eyes picked up it was actually doubling as a secure cell. When the Ministry was constructed hastily, a lot of security measures went into it, and the door and walls were reinforced with numerous high-strength steel bars. It wouldn’t stop me, but a purely strength-based, or even most elementally inclined Chosen, would struggle to get through the walls or break the door mechanisms before security could arrive.
“…even setting aside my… experiences…” Haru’s face was expressionless, as she swiped her keycard, and entered a door code, which disengaged the locks. “…I have different tastes and needs. I’m not Suzuki Haru, young woman and rising Ministry staffer, no, I’m an Onryō, a Chosen, and I’m not who I was before. Not many people would be able to give me what I need, what I’ll want out of… my afterlife.”
Eri was nodding, an expression of understanding on her face, while Hinata was smiling at Ileana and Valeska, who were a bit lost. As we stepped inside the room, we were greeted by two familiar, and very similar, faces.
“You came, then?” Kokuren asked. She was now in casual clothes, as was her sister Byakuren, jeans and black and white shirts respectively, making them look like sisters relaxing after a hard day at work, though I could see traces of anxiety in their faces which they surely believed they were keeping hidden. Beside her, Byakuren glanced at me, her eyes full of anticipation, before she caught sight of Ileana, and her expression was suddenly stony again.
Eri grabbed seats for us, and as we sat down, facing the two guests, Haru spoke.
“We did. Now I won’t deny the pair of you have been helpful, though it is still hard to fully trust you both. With your Jōnin also in custody, as well as the majority of the active Kōga ninjas, the village is in our hands.”
“As Jōnin Furuihonō and the other leaders wanted, seemingly. We ninja follow orders and never question the intent behind them.” Kokuren agreed. “I… we…” she began, and Eri snorted sourly.
“It would never have worked. If the plan was as you were informed, all that would have happened is you would have died uselessly. Taking out Akio is a fool’s errand, even with your Favours, and while there might be some of us weak enough to fall to lethal poison or assassination… I don’t think you’d have succeeded.”
“No, you’re right.” Byakuren agreed, her eyes teary, her face the very image of sorrowful remorse. She twisted at the hem of her white shirt, straining the material over her already bulging chest, the shirt perhaps deliberately a size too small, revealing a hint of her cleavage beneath, and Haru was the one sniffing now.
“You can cut that out. We know it’s all artfully calculated, the Kunoichi seduction arts.” Haru drummed her fingers. “Besides, you’ve been cooperative, we’ll hold up our end of the bargain. However… Akio is not…” Haru was emphatic. “…simply going to fall prey to your wiles. You’ve agreed to work under Princess Mikasa and me, but if you think that’s your ticket to seducing Akio, think again.”
“He won’t fall for your honey traps.” Eri insisted, and she then awed the ninja sisters by transforming into an exact copy of Kokuren. “If Akio finds you sexy, then I’ll indulge him. I can be whoever he wants me to be.”
“Quite the talent there.” Valeska coughed. “You could make a fortune in blackmail shots of celebrities and politicians.”
“No, I’m not showing Eri to anyone, even transformed.” I insisted, as she reverted back to her original form, arms crossed smugly, black tail lashing. I mentally praised her for improving her Shifting Cat, and Eri shifted most of the praise to Ginneka, which surprised me. You’re trying to be a good little sister to her, huh?
Hardly. Though I did promise and am eternally grateful for what she did for me. Doesn’t mean she gets to sleep with you though! The same goes for these two… but you can resist their seduction now, can’t you?
I can. After that troublesome little minx, and the mess with Michiru and Miyu… I know the difference between getting lost in lust or having no emotional connection at all.
“But… if we genuinely wanted to…” Byakuren ventured, her sister nodding beside her, and Haru seemed rather more irritated than I would have anticipated, but it was surely the stress of what was coming up shortly. Hinata was busy on her phone, and I knew people all over Japan were being detained and brought here, and even some international operations were taking place, in cooperation with government agencies, though China, alas, wasn’t viable without us causing a potential catastrophic incident like the Americans did with me and Shaeula.
“If you think you can, feel free. But no dirty tricks. If you end up tricking him into sleeping with you as a means of winning his affection, don’t expect us to be generous. We won’t let Akio take responsibility for the treacherous.” Hinata and Eri were nodding fiercely at Haru’s words. “There are plenty of other good men out there, and your days of sacrificing your virtue for missions is over.”
“But, to gather key intelligence, sometimes…” Kokuren began, and I cut her off.
“There are always other ways. I’m not a prude, but… I was told your genuine feelings, that you didn’t want to sacrifice your bodies and hearts for the sake of your village. Then don’t.” I insisted. “What we want from you is your knowledge, expertise, and…”
“Favours.” Haru finished for me. “You are both Chosen, and better still, Chosen with grounding in combat. Himawari and a number of other ninjas, once they pass the vetting, will be trained as maids and butlers and help promote the growth of a military maid corps, doubling as both servant and bodyguard. But the pair of you have higher value. If you can be trusted.”
“We can.” they promised in unison, and it was Hinata grinning now, though there was no humour in it.
“In that case…” Hinata pressed them. “You can swear Vassalage to Akio here and now. And not in the feudal, ninja sense. Upon your Divine Favours, and the Goddess that gave you them.”
Be restrictive. Haru’s thoughts were harsh. I know you are too kind, I’m barely under any constraints, except the tithe, and you paid to get me set up and will be boosting me to Rank Four anyway, so that’s a non-issue. But this pair… they should be unable to do much of anything without your say-so. Understand?
“We swear. On Marishiten…” they spoke together. “…as our honour as Chūnin, and as women, we swear on our hearts, and… and on our purity.” Honestly, it was rather criminal, the way they were staring at me, their dark eyes moist, their chests heaving, but if mere beauty and charm was all they had, I could resist. Damn, I’m such a riajuu nowadays. To think such things with a straight face, and worse, to mean them…
Letters flared across my vision, confirming the truth of their surrender, and I quickly adjusted the privileges, even as they finished their words.
You have gained two Vassals. Neither Vassal possesses a Territory. You have placed maximum restrictions upon Ban Byakuren and Ban Kokuren. They may not construct Territory Anchors without your permission, nor may they use their Divine Favours without the consent of you or those you delegate, except in defence of their lives, or the lives of those they are sworn to serve.
Damn, maximum restriction level is no joke. But to even affect the Favour, they can’t be faking it, they’ve surrendered completely. I glanced at Haru, and she nodded, confirming through her telepathy.
“We will serve and obey any order given by you, our master, and those you appoint to oversee us, such as Suzuki Haru-sama, and Princess Mikasa-dono. Even if we die, so long as we die for you, we shall greet Yomi with smiles.” Byakuren and Kokuren then stood and bowed, and Haru shook her head.
“Rather flashy. And why would we send you to die? That’s just wasteful. Even if I understand what Eri might be thinking now.” Haru made a joke, and indeed, Eri’s tail was lashing fitfully, a sure sign she was irked. “No, you’re now officially paroled to our care. Come. You can witness what happens to those who make mistakes that can’t be taken back.”
One matter attended to, then. But next…
Outside, one of Haru’s Chosen Heroes was waiting. Fuyumi, the Japanese… ghost… I supposed, was wearing black-rimmed glasses and a nice suit, holding a tablet computer. On seeing us, she ushered us to our destination, paying no mind to the fact that the ninja siblings were following us like lost puppies. Soon, we met up with Sharada, a tall ghost with dusky skin and a pretty beauty mark under one eye. She too was in a suit, and the door she was standing before also had two well-armed JSDF soldiers there. They saluted us, and Haru nodded, before asking Sharada the situation.
“The prisoner inside is… insane.” Her expression was one of disgust. “I know she’s injured, but her mind seems to have broken. All she does is curse and hurl insults, alternatively crying for death, and swearing to kill us all.”
“Fanatics.” I grimaced. “And I’ve no pity for her, or her fellow. After all, she went after the innocent, after those I love.” I hardened my heart to what I had to do, and moments later, Haru, after receiving verbal permission from Morita-san, the Minister, she nodded to the guards, and the laborious process of opening the fortified office which doubled as a cell. There were others along the corridor too, and we’d be visiting two more of them shortly.
“We meet again.” Eri was immediately hostile, as she saw that a woman was tied to the bed. Perhaps she was beautiful once, but now she was gaunt, almost skeletal, her cheeks sunken, pale and wrinkled, and her eyes were dull. She was strapped to a bed, restrained, and as she hissed at us, I noticed many of her teeth were broken. As well as… one arm missing at the elbow, the other arm barely functional due to injury. Both legs gone, at ankle and knee. Other injuries too, no doubt.
I felt a momentarily flare of pity, before Eri’s thoughts, soon joined by Shaeula, Hyacinth, Rose and Lin, urged me to harden my heart, reminding me they’d attacked our home, and would have killed Eri, killed our family, just as if crushing insects which annoyed them.
“After she tried to bite off her tongue, I’m told her teeth had to be removed. It’s inhumane, but…” Haru shook her head. “The thing is, she confessed, and we recorded it all. By the new Ministry laws, it was thus quick to convene a trial. Three trained judges, who have undergone grounding in the new paradigm, as well as six civilian lay judges, the Saiban-in, reached a verdict quickly, and under Japanese law, any Divine Favour will be confiscated. Her comrade also confessed, so he too was convicted. The third and fourth were tricker, but again, due to overwhelming video evidence and witness statements from the Tengokusentou, the verdict was handed down. It will be broadcast throughout Japan and the world, though not on WTV for once…” Haru managed a weary chuckle, even as the bound woman stared at me and Eri with utter hatred. “…but they wanted the sentencing passed down first. Though… once she’s stripped, can you Heal her? We treat prisoners, even scum like her, humanely. Though if she chooses to take her own life…” Haru shrugged, expression cold. Eri too, was furious.
“Shut up with your rattling, coward. I haven’t forgotten…” Eri’s Beheading Axe Of Trials materialised in her hand. “…and I bet you haven’t either. I’m not religious, but mother-in-law Emily is a bit, and as she used to say… you reap what you sow. You sowed hatred, so you reap your reward.”
I placed my hand on Eri’s head, rubbing her cat ears, and she leaned against me, calming down. My Eyes flashed amber, and I nodded.
“Yeah, I’m not as forgiving as I once was. Too much blood on my hands. Even so… I think prison, while some would call it a waste of taxpayer money, is a fitting punishment. In the heat of battle I could strike her down without mercy to protect others, but… as a prisoner…” I shook my head. “We can’t lose everything that makes us human.”
Ileana watched, eyeing me with a little more interest now, though that was bringing a wary, guarded smile to the face of her grandmother. As Hinata murmured to me a question of if the Favour was usable, I shrugged.
“Actually, just like before with Mary Stuart and Sarah McLaughlin, there are actually two. And they aren’t trivial to unravel…”
Linked Archangel – This Divine Favour is one part of a greater, linked whole and allows access to the ??????????, the Great Source of Adherence. Adherence can be supplied through the Linked Archangel, creating minor miracles and empowering the bearer, and enhancing the effect of paired Favours.
The Linked Divine Favour will be consumed and returned through the Linked Archangel if the bearer of this Divine Favour is slain, and other Favours may be sacrificed to further empower the Linked Archangel. If fed enough, it can become Linked Principality, significantly more powerful, and able to draw on a greater pool of shared Adherence. [Class: Powerful] [Type: Law]
I still can’t see what the Great Source of Adherence is, but my Eyes show more than last time. Makes sense, as they’ve Ranked up a fair bit…
Phanuel’s Ward Of The Righteous is a Divine Favour crafted from concentrated Adherence, refined Ether and Soullight infused Truesoul strands, and also bound by a careful resonance, so should be handled with caution. This Favour allows the bearer to utilise powerful Adherence to guide the surrounding Aether into forming a defensive barrier of golden light, which can also be channelled into a golden spear for counterattacking.
Just as the Archangel Phanuel wields a golden shield of protection, all enemies of the Throne unable to breach his unyielding will, so too shall the bearer of this Favour protect the Throne, its Adherents, and all who venerate the Ninth Heaven, while also smiting the wicked, for a shield can protect, but it can also bludgeon and strike. [Class: Imperious] [Type: Principle]
Careful resonance, huh? I… as the woman cursed and spat at us, her English words slurred by her fragile state and lack of teeth, Eri slammed her axe down beside her head, strands of black hair, now dotted with white from stress, scattering away, but the woman merely glowered at Eri, as if daring her to strike her.
“Push me and I will…” Eri spoke calmly, which made the prisoner pause, as it was far more chilling than outward anger. “…but you have some use yet…”
I heard Kokuren whispering to her sister. “It seems they are more ruthless that we. I’m feeling a little hurt…”
“I know…” Byakuren responded, and I knew they were doing it on purpose, since they could have used the ninja communication methods if they wished. “…but if you think about it, we can fit right in! We’ll be indispensable soon, and…”
Starting their appeals early, huh? I’ve no right to stop them trying, I guess, but… they’re starting from one hell of a negative position, and I’ve others I want to try and make things work with way ahead of them in the queue… that aside… I sent a thought to Rose. …can you see that?
“I can.” Within the Wisdom World, which now also had cool, placid mini Helmwige playing the lyre, her grey eyes showing wonder as her purple braid swung and her fingers danced on the strings, Rose cast Runes, and what we could see was visible to all seven of the Valkyries currently present. Just missing Brunnhilde and Schwertliete and then we have a full sisterly reunion here…
“You see? The works of the Throne are potent. They aren’t arrogant unjustifiably.” Rose grimaced, a ring of shimmering Runes surrounding her. “But as First Adherent of the Path that Twists Connection’s Strands, Loom That Weaves Bonds, and Blade That Severs Misfortune…” She smiled at me playfully, and at that moment, I had the urge to hold her in my arms. Seeing Lin eyeing my sullenly, her jealousy plain, I let my affection free.
On our wedding night, I’m going to devour you both, my dear Brúðr.
Run flushed and giggled, orange eyes sparkling as she felt my raging emotions, and Rose’s cheeks darkened to pink, while Lin’s smile was shy but genuine. Faking a cough, Rose continued. “…I can sense it. Can’t you, my Verr? And we shall see who devours who. I may not be the sister with the most… stamina… but I am still a Valkyrie.” She chortled happily. “Now then… make me, make littlest sister Lin, fall for you anew! Impress our watching sisters, so that they will bless our union with all their heart!”
No pressure then. But you’re right…
It was impossible to simply use Chirurgery to extract the Linked Archangel, and it had tendrils of adherence and soullight wrapping around the other Favour, that of Phanuel… never heard of that particular Archangel… but thinking about it, if Archangels are actually surprisingly low-ranked, there can’t just be a handful…
Any attempt to interfere would detonate it, at least with my Skills, but… my Path was reacting. It was an odd sensation, but now that I was clear-headed, it was significantly easier to detect and analyse. Yeah, when my Vassal bond with Miyu was pulling me in, I was… distracted. Miyu sure was beautiful and elegant, lewd too, during the Dance… nope, not right now…
Focussing, I could feel a deep affinity for the Connection here, but also, a visceral disgust and hatred. As I shaped my Path, it too shaped me, and what these Connections were was abhorrent. There was no Bond within, no joy, only cold, pragmatic domination. These aren’t Connections to grow, to expand, to make things better, but to control, retrieve, dominate… my Path may be one of Connection, but I repudiate such terrible Bonds! We Connect to make the world a happier place!
At my bold thoughts, which leaked into the Wisdom World, leading to Gerhilde giving me a very approving nod, her crimson eyes solemn, I decided to try something a little risky.
“How is it?” Hinata asked, ever alert for a chance to profit, and Haru shushed her.
“Quiet, Hinata… he needs to concentrate. This is delicate work.”
It sure is. I was certain the Linked Archangel was a lost cause, but curiously, through it I could feel something familiar and far distant. Is that… Minerva’s Book Of Wisdom? Filing that away for later, I continued my examination. Indeed, the Linked Archangel was built very differently to other Divine Favours, and I’d seen a number by now. It had no… personality, for want of a better expression. The soullight and Truesoul strands… seem almost… artificial…
As I pondered, the prisoner thrashed, but Eri gestured, and the two ninjas, eager to help, used acupuncture points to stop her movement, jamming fingers into her sensitive meridians.
Worse… sharpening both my Eye and the sense of my path to the maximum, I tried probing with Energetic Perception, using my own soullight, and I discovered another trap beneath the surface. Phanuel’s Ward was rigged, strands of the artificial Truesoul hidden within what I presumed was Phanuel’s. It was effectively unsalvageable… as a whole, that is… damn, sometimes I think I’m lucky enough to give Shaeula a run for her money.
Now I was flush with adherence after Hyacinth’s efforts, and she could refine me more, much more, I could be a little reckless, and I also had practice with damaged and partial Favours. The Connections I craved would empower me, the support of all those walking behind me, and I wasn’t going to return empty-handed.
“All right, let’s make a killing. Not literally though. I’d like her to have a long time to think about what she’s done…” As the woman stared at me balefully with cloudy eyes, I worked Chirurgery, all the while Rose broadcasted what she could see of it to the Wisdom World, and was even using Runes to record it, in an imitation of our mobile phones.
I’m the Blade that Cuts Misfortune… I gently stroked the hilt of the snoozing Tsurugi, resolving that when this shitty day was done, and before my night of passion began, I’d spoil her a bit, treat her to ice cream, maybe, in a café. …but I also am the arbiter of Bonds, I Weave them as I please. I won’t disdain Connection, how arrogant would that make me, yet… these I shall Twist into something more befitting of whoever receives it…
Ever so carefully, I eased in replacement soullight and adherence. It didn’t weaken the Favour, as it wasn’t reliant upon that soullight, it was a trap, but I also didn’t trust the Favour. Having seen that Linked Archangel was one giant Connection, I worried about anyone being exposed to it. Sadly, I needed to cut that entirely, which would also entail cutting the link to Phanuel, but…
Sorry, I’ve done this before, too.
The Favour squirmed, as the Linked Archangel sensed tampering and detonated, wrecking much of the woman’s Chakra network, which was already broken by her grievous injuries. She coughed blood, and Byakuren winced, expecting her white shirt to be ruined, but I caught it with a gust of wind and washed it away with water, using Ether healing to stabilise the dying zealot. With a wrench, I dragged power down, just before I severed the Truesoul strands, reinforcing the break with my soullight, making it functional. It was like taking a bucket of water out of an oasis, insignificant to the lake there, but priceless to a parched traveller, and my reward…
Ward And Spear Of Judgement is a Divine Favour no longer linked to Archangel Phanuel, instead, it is a concentrated mass of stolen Adherence and Soullight. If implanted in a suitable recipient, it should be possible to master the Skills within before the Favour finally collapses, and other benefits may be usable…
“Great!” I grinned, cradling the energy within me. I then turned my attention to the unconscious woman, and I restored her, even regrowing her limbs, though I did repair her Chakra network in a way she’d effectively be cripped in terms of using aether, as Shaeula’s brother had wanted to do to me, what seemed so long ago now.
“You’re far too charitable…” Eri puffed out her cheeks, and I stroked her head again.
“Hardly. This will look better on TV and internationally anyway. It shows we’re the right side of this conflict.”
With that said, Haru nodded. “So, ready for the next one?”
“Yeah, let’s get this done before our guests arrive.” I didn’t miss the flicker of bitter anxiety on Hinata’s face at that, so I stroked her hair too, soothing her. “All right then. Second time should be easier…”
***
The male fanatic had been in worse shape than the woman, armless, blind and barely able to speak, though rattle out curses he did, at least until Eri knocked him out with the butt of her axe, and the ninja sisters did their restraining. The second time I was a little more proficient, but again, the Linked Archangel and the traps within the Favour were beyond my Skills to solve, even with Rose advising me.
Still, Barachiel’s Purifying Sword had become Lightning Sword Of Purification and was safely within my grasp, and after Healing him, with adjustments to his Chakra network again, of course, we left. Once the door was shut, Haru’s Chosen Hero leading us to the final cell, as I had no need to see the captured Cultivator today, only the Ruby Serpent operative, as he was a Chosen, Haru let out a long breath, rubbing at her temples.
“Their minds are so… turbulent. It’s a little like what Furuihonō did…” the ninja sisters appeared guilty at her words. “…by scrambling my brain with a nonsense jumble of numbers. Only they aren’t doing it on purpose. There’s little information to be gleaned, unless…”
“Actually, if you allow us to assist…” Byakuren volunteered. “…certain drugs and hypnotic techniques can unlock a mind…”
“We’d have to run it past Morita-sama, and also the Prime Minister and Motoko’s grandfather…” Haru mused. “But if we can get a legal rationale, then it might help. As it is, we got no useful information about the Chruch’s plans out of them. All I got was a headache.”
“Get Akio to rub your shoulders later.” Hinata giggled, trying to distract herself from her worries, though I knew she was genuinely delighted we’d accrued two more, if not full, Favours, at least the combat power from them, and likely a little more. “He’s wonderful at massaging and easing tension.”
Hey now! I shot her a look, but she only shrugged, and I was stunned as Haru nodded.
“You know what, that sounds good. You two should understand, as you both are on the bigger side…” Her chest moved as she stretched, and she yawned. “I suppose I should take advantage of my boss once in a while.”
“Are… you sure?” I asked, uncertain, and she nodded.
“Really sure?”
“Don’t be annoying.” Haru rolled her brown eyes at me. “I’m a grown, professional woman. I may be dead, but the dead can still say no to things they don’t want. Today… is genuinely going to be extremely shitty…” She swore, something she did seldom, emphasising her disquiet. “…so yes, I’ll take a little support from you.” She smiled softly, poking hy cheek with one finger.
“That guy from earlier would be sick if he could see this…” Eri chuckled, and the two Chosen Heroes of Haru had perked up, all smiles.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself.” I warned. “You know how Haru is…”
“I know how I am.” Haru sighed. “Like I said earlier, I’m dead, not made of glass. I won’t break at a little shoulder rub. Though to be honest, if I was made of glass, the stress would have shattered me. Let’s extract this Favour and be done with it. This is the easy part, no need to waste any sympathy.”
“Oh, how… unexpected.” The man’s voice greeted us. Inside the room, a non-descript man with a mixture of Western and Chinese features was securely strapped and chained to an upright restraint set, leaving him no room to move. He was largely uninjured, unlike the two Church attackers, so securing him was necessary.
“We meet again.” Haru declared, and the man smiled knowingly, composed despite the tough situation.
“We do indeed. I believe I have told you everything I know about Ruby Serpent’s plans for Japan. Which alas, it not much. I may have awoken to Harpocrates and used his secrecy for my own, but I am still not the head of the Serpent.”
Haru shook her head, rubbing at her temples. I shot her a sympathetic glance, realising that if she was going to be brave and light-hearted, hiding her fears, I’d accept that and give her the most relaxing, yet perfectly gentlemanly massage she’d ever received. Another one, right?
Yes, you know, until I went to Kōga, I never realised just how many ways there were to beat Telepathy. Though it seems most of them were coincidental, methods to avoid breaking under interrogation, or inadvertently giving tells through body language. Self-hypnosis, drugs, sheer mental fortitude, repetitive mantras… I’m quite sick of it.
It’ll be okay. Once we get through today, and Pilgrimage just has the dedication ceremony, we’ll have time to take a breather.
I hope so. I’m dead tired, Akio. Tired enough to sleep like the dead woman I am!
One final push…
I glanced at Kokuren and Byakuren, and they nodded, excitement glittering in their brown eyes. Yeah, I don’t fully trust them, of course I don’t, but I can give them chances to earn our trust. Evaluating others fairly and evaluating what I truly think of others… that’s my new resolution, for a new year coming up. Mom would be pleased. Though if I break it as easily as she does hers… Holding in a chuckle at that, I got straight down to business. This lackey of Ruby serpent wasn’t from the Church, so it was a simple salvage operation, and I again adjusted his Chakra network to be near-useless on the way out.
Harpocrates Hears No Sound, Sees No Light, Feels No Presence is a Divine Favour crafted from concentrated Adherence, refined Ether and Soullight infused Truesoul strands. It allows the bearer to obfuscate their actions, and the actions of a limited number of those around them from the sense of sound, sight and touch, though smell and taste are unaffected. Taking hostile actions against those so obfuscated may break the effect, though it depends on the scale of the actions taken, and the perception of the targets.
Just as the Harpocrates is a Divinity raised by a mistaken perception of another’s true nature, so too shall the bearer of this Favour fog the eyes, stopper the ears, and rob the touch of those who would perceive them truly. [Class: Noble] [Type: Principle]
“Not a bad haul.” I remarked, and Eri nodded.
“Have you got any ideas in mind for these?”
“One or two.” I agreed. “One or two.” We walked past a room where Ministry staff were researching the Reliquaries recovered from the Church attack on my Territory… oh, Kana got one too, but we kept that as a souvenir, and our own research specimen. Though my Spatial Storage tech is better, if probably harder to mass manufacture…
We glanced in, curious, before Haru ushered us to our destination, conference hall one. Inside Morita Yuna-san, the Minister herself, was waiting for us, along with two very nervous staffers, and Haru’s expression flipped to one of malice, before she smoothed it out in an instant, so I doubted anyone but us saw it.
It’ll be fine. We’re here with you.
I know. But… even discounting the ninja plants, who all surrendered willingly at the word of their Jōnin, to think two probable infiltrators got in, judging by their abnormal thought patterns, it vexes me! I’m supposed to be the ultimate anti-espionage tool!
Don’t call yourself a tool, even in jest. I soothed. Besides, they might just be odd people. But… her withering scorn came across to me. …you’re probably right. But catching them now is a good thing.
“Good to see you, Undersecretary, Special Advisor.” Morita-san greeted Haru and me. “Oh, and I can hardly forget Takatsukasa-san, and Mori-san. You others…” she glanced at Ileana and Valeska, who had been watching in silence for a while now. “…are our special guests from Romania, and our two ninjas. Well, this is quite a day.”
As we all were seated on one side of the table, Morita-san’s side, I observed the two suspects, a man and a woman, and since they were sat opposite us, if they were hiding anything, the pressure of this would weaken their mental defences.
“Arisu-san’s coming now.” Hinata spoke up suddenly, checking her phone. “And our other guests are being ferried here as we speak. It’ll soon be time.” Under the table she reached out for me, and I took her hand, squeezing it reassuringly.
“It’ll be fine.” I mouthed at her. “At least he was only careless…”
At Hinata’s mortified, aggrieved expression I clasped her hand more firmly, and as we exchanged harmless chatter amongst ourselves, the ninja sisters serving us all tea and snacks from the small kitchen to one side, the door finally opened, and in came Arisu-san, leading a small group with her.
“Do what do we owe the pleasure?” Chiyo-san, the head of Yushima Tenjin shrine, and one of my earliest supporters, asked. “Say your greetings.” she urged her two granddaughters, who followed her in. The blonde, delinquent-aping trainee priest from Akaiwashi shrine was here too. He nodded, taking one of the open seats, and then in came one of the young noble girls I recognised from Adamant. She seemed to be with her parents, and she had a flushed face, and she was glancing at me oddly. Another couple entered, and I was glad to see no violence had been needed, everyone having come willingly, and then…
“Oh, hello there, Akio-kun, Hinata.” As Hiroto-san greeted us, him giving his sister a rather rakish smile, I clutched her hand tighter, as Arisu-san slowly shut the door with the sound of finality, bringing the start of this investigation into motion…
