Chapter 237: Chapter 237: Alicar The Elf Archer, There’s No Escape
Leon didn’t respond right away.
Because if what the elf was saying was true, then this wasn’t just a difficult assessment anymore.
It was something else entirely, something far more dangerous than anything he had expected when he stepped through that gate.
And yet, before Leon could fully process that thought, something interrupted them.
Several figures moved from the shadows of the ruined buildings around them, their heavy armored steps echoing through the empty street as they emerged one after another, their dark forms immediately recognizable: [Forsaken Knights].
Leon’s grip tightened around his sword instinctively, his body reacting before his mind could even catch up.
But the elf beside him didn’t even slow down, and didn’t even bother to change his pace as those enemies approached.
Then—
Fwoosh!
The elf moved, his bow already in his hands, drawn and ready with a speed that Leon couldn’t properly follow, his movements so smooth and precise that it felt almost unreal.
Golden light gathered instantly. Then, release.
A series of arrows shot forward, each one leaving behind a trail of radiant energy as they cut through the air faster than Leon could track, their speed completely overwhelming his perception.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Each arrow found its target perfectly. Each knight was hit directly. And each one was erased.
The arrows pierced through them like they were nothing, and in the next instant, their massive armored bodies were completely destroyed, reduced to nothing under the sheer force of that single attack.
Silence followed. The street returned to stillness as if nothing had happened at all.
Leon stood there, his eyes fixed on where the knights had been just a moment ago, his mind trying to process what he had just witnessed.
“If you want to survive in this place,” the elf spoke again, his voice cutting through the silence as he lowered his bow casually, “then you’ll need to be able to do at least this much.”
For a brief moment, Leon caught something in his expression, some kind of emptiness.
It was only there for a second before it disappeared, replaced by that same calm demeanor, but it was enough for Leon to notice.
“…What about escape?” Leon asked after a short pause, his voice steady, though his mind was anything but, “That’s the whole point of the God-Rank assessment, isn’t it?”
The elf stopped walking. Then he laughed.
It wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t mocking in the usual sense, but there was something unsettling about it, something that made Leon’s instincts flare up again despite there being no immediate danger.
“Heh,” the elf grinned as he glanced slightly over his shoulder, his golden eyes reflecting faintly in the dim light of the ruined city, “You’ll figure it out soon enough.”
There was a short pause. Then he continued, his tone quieter now.
“There’s no escape from this place,” he said simply, “So instead of thinking about that… you should focus on surviving.”
“…No escape?” Leon stopped once more in his tracks, his expression turning cold and serious as his eyes locked onto the elf’s back, “What do you mean, there can’t not be an exit…”
To him, that statement contradicted everything he understood about the system itself.
The [God-Rank] assessment was supposed to be the ultimate challenge, not some kind of eternal prison with no way out.
And even if it was absurdly difficult, there had to be a method to clear it, otherwise it wouldn’t exist in the first place.
Even if the success rate was something ridiculous like one in a thousand or even less, there still had to be that one path forward, that one condition to fulfill, that one way to break through. Right?
But the elf didn’t answer.
Instead, he simply laughed again, that same quiet, almost amused laugh as he gave Leon a brief glance over his shoulder before shaking his head, clearly uninterested in explaining anything further.
Leon’s expression hardened slightly at that reaction, his thoughts shifting as he silently observed him.
’I guess he doesn’t want to talk about it,’ Leon thought, his gaze turning colder as he followed behind, ’Fine… I’ll figure it out myself soon enough anyway.’
As they continued moving through the ruined streets of the [Forsaken City], Leon didn’t relax even for a second.
His senses were fully active as he watched everything around him carefully, because even though the elf hadn’t shown any hostility, that didn’t mean he could let his guard down.
If anything, the opposite was true.
If this person had wanted to kill him, Leon already knew there was almost nothing he could have done to stop it.
That single display of power earlier had been more than enough to make that clear.
Meaning that if the elf wasn’t attacking him, then there had to be another reason for it.
’Or maybe… there really is no escape, and this place is just one big trap,’ Leon’s face darkened slightly at that thought as it formed in his mind, ’It did say the gods are watching… so what if this is where they send people they see as a problem?’
The idea wasn’t impossible.
If the gods had truly noticed him already, if they were aware of his existence and the path he was walking toward, then trapping him somewhere like this would be an easy solution.
But at the same time… that didn’t quite add up either.
Only a handful of gods actually paid attention to the [Higher Domains], and even those couldn’t interfere directly, so for them to suddenly act like this… It didn’t fully make sense.
“The name’s Alicar, by the way,” the elf suddenly spoke after his laughter died down, his tone casual as if the earlier conversation had never happened, “Figure we might as well get along, since we’ll be stuck here for a long time.”
Leon didn’t respond immediately, his eyes still scanning the surroundings before finally answering in a calm voice, “…Leon.”
Leon didn’t say anything else, because he was far more focused on understanding this place than anything else.
The streets of the [Forsaken City] stretched endlessly ahead of them, filled with broken buildings and collapsed structures that looked like they had been abandoned for ages.
Everything around them carried a sense of decay and emptiness that made the entire area feel lifeless.
There was no movement. Nothing alive… aside from them. And the [Forsaken Knights].
“Luckily, every player who arrives here spawns in this area,” Alicar continued with a slight grin, “It’s basically the safest zone you’ll get, since only those knights roam around here, but once you go further in… things start getting annoying.”
As if on cue, a few minutes later, the sound of armor echoed again.
Another group of [Forsaken Knights] appeared. Leon didn’t even react this time.
Because before he could do anything—
Fwoosh!
Alicar had already drawn his bow. Golden light flashed.
And just like before, the knights were erased instantly, each one destroyed by a single arrow as if they were nothing more than targets standing still.
The efficiency was absurd. The speed was even worse.
Leon watched silently, his mind processing everything as he compared it to his own strength.
’…That’s not even his full power,’ Leon thought, his eyes narrowing slightly as he followed behind him again.
And that was what bothered him the most. Because Leon knew how strong he was.
With his [100% Drop Rate] and the steady growth he had maintained since the very beginning, he had always been ahead of everyone else.
Catching up to him should have been nearly impossible.
And yet—
’How the hell is he this strong if we’re both here for the same assessment?’
That question lingered in his mind, refusing to fade.
But instead of dwelling on it too long, Leon shifted his focus.
He opened his [Storage Space]. The items from the two [Forsaken Knights] he had killed earlier appeared in front of him.
